5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for 9 year old.......2007-02-03

My son is 9 and absolutely loves this book. We've limited it to one activity a day so that he doesn't finish it too quickly (there are only about 35 or 40 in the book). I would recommend this book for any creative child - we will definately be buying more in this series.

5 out of 5 stars " What should I draw?" .......2006-12-30

Many times kids want to make something but don't know where to start. These books get the creative juices flowing. I loved them when I was a kid and now both of my kids love them.

5 out of 5 stars Fond memories from 2nd grade.......2004-05-04

After recess every day we would be given a page from the Anti Coloring book and allowed to draw to our hearts content for half an hour. It was one of my favorite times of the day.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up, most definitely!!.......2004-03-02

As a parent and former early childhood educator, I am pleased to write this review. In a day and age when entertainment does not require much thought process from our young ones (i.e. video games, pointless television shows, computer software, etc.), it is very refreshing to stumble upon the Anti-Coloring Book. Our children are exposed to endless amounts of effort-free fun stuff; and ultimately, young minds become lazy, trained, and forgetful of the power of imagination. How can you say no to a product that fosters developmentally appropriate learning, and promotes self awareness, self confidence, self expression, and independent thinking?? Help your child to break free from the lines and boundaries that hold them back. Kudos to the creators... it's time to get real about our children's needs!

5 out of 5 stars I grew up with Anti-Coloring Books.......2001-01-23

I still remember some of the specific pages I created in my Anti-Coloring Books almost 20 years ago! I had 4 or 5 different books and loved them all. These books encourage creativity, empowering kids to draw and think "outside the lines." I look forward to giving these books to my nieces, nephews, and children in the near future and are thrilled to learn that they're still available.

    5 out of 5 stars Imagination, please!.......2005-03-08

My son, currently five years old, isn't sure about coloring books. His usual modus operandi was to make a couple of marks within the coloring page, then turn it over and draw on the back. I picked up this Anti-Coloring Book, the Fourth, on sale to see if he liked it any better. He most certainly does--he LOVES it!

"What do you need a fairy godmother to do for you?" asked the book. My son immediately drew a picture of himself flying like a bird. Then he decided to color in the fairy godmother's dress (she graces the upper left quarter of the page) because anyone who made him fly deserved to have a beautiful dress, he said.

The next printed page (the pages are printed on only one side in case one needs to take one out to share) asked, "What would it look like if you could see what a skunk smelled like?" My son proceeded to draw squiggly smell lines in browns and greens, adding a red saw and some blue smoke. The skunk at the bottom of the page got a technicolor "smell paint job" as well.

Other pages include the following (a selection of the 50 or so pages):
You are a famous pilot flying on an important mission.
What important things would you like to talk about with your parents?
Why are these police officers weriting out a ticket?
You have chartered a boat to sail to Paradise.
    Design your own train set.

Each page has the "assignment" and a suitable line drawing that takes up only a portion of the page, roughly a fourth to a third for the most part.

I will definitely pick up the others in the series and look forward to many more smiles from my son. I believe that this series will serve him for several more years.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and educational.......2005-03-03

My little girl loves to color when I read, and I like the coloring page to be related to topic. I also like her to use her imagination. So for example, when we were studing the Presidents I gave her a page on which she had to finish a statue.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Artistic inspiration.......2006-06-21

I just love all of the books in this series by Susan Striker (with Edward Kimmel on a few of them). In college I learned about how coloring books are actually somewhat damaging to a child's creativity. When you give a child a coloring book, you aren't asking him to think or create - just kill time. But when you just give him inspiration in the form of these books, you're telling him that his imagination is important, and that you have faith in his abilities to draw and create.

Completing these pages doesn't only take imagination, either. Problem-solving skills are employed as children answer the questions posed on each page through their illustrations.

To children, none of this matters of course. For anyone who has ever laid down a blank piece of paper and wondered what they should draw, this is a welcome source of interesting ideas.

As a mother, I have used these books several times, and every time I get them out and let my kids look through them, they immediately become excited by the many possibilities and always find it difficult to narrow down which ones they will do. Furthermore, there is such a range of topics that any child is just about guaranteed to find something of interest. On one page, the creator is challenged to "Award Yourself a medal for what you know you do best", then on another page he or she is asked to "Construct a city on another planet" or illustrate, "What is your idea of Paradise?". All of these prompts also include some background to help get creative juices flowing.

I should also note that many of the prompts in the book can also easily lend themselves to be used as creative writing prompts. I highly recommend this or any book in this series to any teacher or parent.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a coloring book, your kids make art "creations".......2007-02-02

This book is far superior to regular coloring books that just have you color in the lines without much thought.

It truly does empower creativity. Rather than just coloring in a figure, kids are given prompts. One page has a theater stage with the request "Design costumes and scenery for your favorite fairy tale." Another says "You have been asked to design new playground equipment for the park." My daughter really got into these designs. When she finished the book she brought it to me and showed me her creations. They really are creations. She's drawn her ideal park, she's drawn a picture of the things she likes to do when sick in bed (and that gives me good ideas of how to entertain her the next time that happens).

I'm buying one for each kid, since they really do become personal art books. We've used them for road trip entertainment too. Kids may zip through a regular coloring book within half an hour, but this one lasted us about 6 hours.

5 out of 5 stars I received this coloring book in 1981 and I still have it........2005-11-04

I was given this coloring book for Christmas in 1981, as a gift from my aunt. I devoured it, and loved the idea that *I* could create some of the picture before coloring it. As the child of an artist, I have always been very encouraged by my parents to be creative. But when I got to school, I found that teachers didn't always share that enthusiasm, and I found it terribly frustrating. Grass HAD to be green, the sun HAD to be up in a corner of the picture...

But not with THIS coloring book. Kids can do whatever they want in here, and it's WONDERFUL. Striker draws half the picture, and encourages kids to draw what they see in their own imaginations, dreams, and toyboxes.

In college, I bought the rest of the series of Anti-Coloring Books, and they're all every bit as good. They will be a mainstay of my gift-giving for children needing creative encouragement as long as they're in print.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for the little artists you know!.......1999-06-20

A ship's captain looks out over the bow of his boat. What has he sighted? It's up to your child's imagination to illustrate the rest of the story on this page of the Thrid Anti-Coloring Book. Each page offers a starting point for creativity and encourages children to design, create, consider possibilities. There are pages asking to design a billboard, to look into a fire, to draw what you think of when you hold a seashell to your ear. My school age children have loved Susan Striker's anit-coloring books over the years and I continue to purchase them as birthday gifts for young friends.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Creativity!.......2003-01-08

These books are great for allowing children to be creative. Each page presents an idea for the child to expand upon by drawing and coloring her own picture. There are no lines provided to be colored in. Each book in the series provides new pages and ideas for imaginative drawing, and the pictures created depend upon the child's imagination. I gave these books to a 7 and an 8 year old who absolutely love them. (Their parents liked them, too!) Older children would be able to expand upon the same ideas and create even more detailed pictures.
