If you haven't read this book, you need to. This book brought so much stuff to light for me as a single woman. The secrets, as I call them, that Thomas Weeks and Juanita share with you as you read will in some way touch on some part of your life. It doesn't matter if you are married, single, or looking, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-16

Anyone planning to get married should read this book, its amazing how Dr Weeks dealt with issues we don't particularly like talking about. It's a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!!.......2007-03-23

This book and the companion CD were one of the best investments I have ever made. Bishop Weeks and Prophetess Bynum Weeks opened up their relationship in order that believers would have a better understanding of marriage and what it takes for a marriage to flourish today. It was practical and spiritual advice that will help those who are married and those waiting on God to send their mate. I know I will refer to both the book and the CD many times over the years. For those looking for more check out Bishop Weeks website for his Teach Me How to Love You Conference DVD Series, I ordered them and they are some of the most inspiring messages you will ever hear.

5 out of 5 stars Great, great read!.......2007-03-09

This is a wonderfully written book by Bishop Weeks. He certainly understands the complexities in today's relationships and how to successfully work through problems that may arise. His illustrations relating to his own relationship allows the reader to understand that he too had to learn how to love a woman. This is a must read for both singles and married couples alike! I really enjoyed the book, job well done!

5 out of 5 stars Boring Book.......2007-02-25

The CD at the end of the book every Woman seeking a husband or one that already has one should read this! Great Message.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

5 out of 5 stars pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Like Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's groundbreaking On Death and Dying, Susan Anderson's book clearly defines the five phases of a different kind of grieving--grieving over a lost relationship. An experienced professional who has specialized in helping people with loss, heartbreak, and abandonment for more than two decades, Susan Anderson gives this subject the serious attention it deserves. The Journey From Abandonment to Healing is designed to help all victims of emotional breakups--whether they are suffering from a recent loss, or a lingering wound from the past; whether they are caught up in patterns that sabotage their own relationships, or they're in a relationship where they no longer feel loved. From the first stunning blow to starting over, it provides a complete program for abandonment recovery.

"If there can be a pill to cure the heartbreak of rejection, this book may be it."-- Rabbi Harold Kushner, bestselling author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People

In the tradition of Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's On Death and Dying--but dealing with the grief over the loss of a relationship
Helps readers work through the five universal phases of abandonment: shattering, withdrawal, internalizing, rage, lifting

5 out of 5 stars Learning more each day.......2007-06-05

Very informative book on such a personal topic... I learned about ME and why I have the feelings I do on some days and react to certain situations... Can get "heavy" at times, but if healing is the end result, and total honesty is used, worth the "weight" to get the end result.. Thank you for such a new look at this topic.. Anyone suffering from a range of problems such as addictions, co dependency, alcoholism, and fears might consider this the start to their recovery... as I learned abandoment fears or the actual act ( either physical, mental, emotional) is at the root of so many of the disorders today.... Help yourself heal and help the children of those so hurt to keep healthy... Was worth it to me..

5 out of 5 stars A sensitive and thought provoking book of healing and self-development.......2007-05-30

I bought this book based on a name-drop by Ken Wilber on one of his audio CDs for the Kosmic Consciousness series. Part of my job involves dealing with the bereaved, so I am aware of current sociological thought regarding the bereavement cycle of emotional release and mental readjustment, which she terms 'lifting'. What fascinated me about Anderson's approach, was a long overdue reorientation of the importance of abandonment as a driving factor in certain forms of mental illness, that has very limited cultural outlets (as opposed to bereavement). She introduces a similar cycle of emotional healing that is tailored to abandonment, and offers a variety of inspiring ways to uncover underlying pyschologies of narcissistic injury and regression. The book is easy to read, and nourishing enough to absorb more than once!! Truly, a golden nugget - cannot recommend highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful book.......2007-01-16

I greatly enjoyed reading this book. I think it is the best of several I looked at. It helped explain the weird emotional turmoil I went thru, over a broked heart. It has helped me overcome the problems.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.......2006-02-22

This book is excellent. It helps differentiate between depression and abandonment issues. Written by a psychotherapist dealing with her own abandonment, the book adds that much more validity to the subject. It always helps when readers can not only relate to a topic, but also learn that others experience similar feelings....

5 out of 5 stars better than i thought.......2005-12-01

when i purchased this book i joked that it was my cheap therapy (see myspace blog) but it has turned out to be true. There are already a list of freinds waiting to read my copy.

I am still working through the issues that were reveiled by reading this book and have a distinct hope that the horrible feelings will soon end. The author is brilliant and inspiring, but the reader is the one who musy do the work....

Book Description

A gorgeous gift and a landmark work that is an essential addition to everyone's personal library.

Never before have the four great works of Charles Darwin—Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle (1845), The Origin of Species (1859), The Descent of Man (1871), and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals (1872)—been collected under one cover. Undertaking this challenging endeavor 123 years after Darwin's death, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Edward O. Wilson has written an introductory essay for the occasion, while providing new, insightful introductions to each of the four volumes and an afterword that examines the fate of evolutionary theory in an era of religious resistance. In addition, Wilson has crafted a creative new index to accompany these four texts, which links the nineteenth-century, Darwinian evolutionary concepts to contemporary biological thought. Beautifully slipcased, and including restored versions of the original illustrations, From So Simple a Beginning turns our attention to the astounding power of the natural creative process and the magnificence of its products. Slipcased hardcover; 101 illustrations, map.

I bought this book knowing very little about Darwin or his theories. From So Simple a Beginning was an easy read about a very interesting man. I would hope that not just supporters of evolution would read this book there is more to the man then just one theory.

Excellent in every particular. Five stars in delivery time, condition, quality of the experience.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful writing wrong package.......2007-01-10

There is no gainsaying the writings of Darwin or the thinking of my favorite living scientist, E.O.Wilson. But the package is wrong.
Four books in one. Too heavy, too cumbersome. Discouraging.

3 out of 5 stars Too big.......2007-01-05

This book is way too big to hold to read, so it is not useful. From the picture I thought I was ordering 4 different books in a book holder, not one giant book. I recommend buying them separately unless you have very strong arms and wrists.

Biology, it seems, is a good showcase for the talents of Perl. Newcomers to Perl who understand biological information will find James Tisdall's Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics to be an excellent compendium of examples. Teachers of Perl will likewise find the text to be filled with fresh programming illustrations of growing scientific importance. Seasoned Perlmongers who want to learn biology, however, should search elsewhere, as Tisdall's emphasis is on Perl's logic rather than Mother Nature's.

Departing from O'Reilly's earlier monograph Developing Bioinformatic Computer Skills, Tisdall's text is organized aggressively along didactic lines. Nearly all of the 13 chapters begin with twin bullet lists of Perl programming tools and the bioinformatic methods that require them. Likewise, the chapters end with exercises. String concatenation is illustrated with gene splicing, and regular expressions are taught with gene transcription and motif searching.

Tisdall emphasizes sequence examples throughout, leading up to an introduction to a Perl interface for the NIH GenBank biological database and the widely used BLAST sequence alignment tool. After a brief discussion of three-dimensional protein structure, he returns to sequence extraction and secondary structure prediction.

Tisdall's goal is to boost the beginning programmer into a domain of self-learning. He imparts essential etiquette for the success of programming newbies: use the wealth or resources available, from user documentation to Web site surveys to FAQs to How-To's to news groups and finally to direct personal appeals for help from a senior colleague. A well-plugged-in bioinformatics Perl student will soon discover Bioperl, an open-source effort to bring research-grade bioinformatic tools to the Perl community. Bioperl is described briefly at the end of Tisdall's book and will reportedly be a forthcoming title of its own in the O'Reilly bioinformatics series.

Although he introduces bioinformatics as an academic discipline, Tisdall treats it as a trade throughout his book. He indicates that open questions and computational hard problems exist, but does not describe what they are or how they are being tackled. Ultimately, Tisdall presents bioinformatics as another arrow in a bench scientist's quiver, very much like HPLC, 2D-PAGE, and the various spectroscopies.

As odd as a "bioinformatics-as-tool" book may be to its research proponents, the reduction of bioinformatics to trade status both deflates and vindicates the years of research, as Tisdall's work attests. --Peter Leopold

Book Description

With its highly developed capacity to detect patterns in data, Perl has become one of the most popular languages for biological data analysis. But if you're a biologist with little or no programming experience, starting out in Perl can be a challenge. Many biologists have a difficult time learning how to apply the language to bioinformatics. The most popular Perl programming books are often too theoretical and too focused on computer science for a non-programming biologist who needs to solve very specific problems. Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics is designed to get you quickly over the Perl language barrier by approaching programming as an important new laboratory skill, revealing Perl programs and techniques that are immediately useful in the lab. Each chapter focuses on solving a particular bioinformatics problem or class of problems, starting with the simplest and increasing in complexity as the book progresses. Each chapter includes programming exercises and teaches bioinformatics by showing and modifying programs that deal with various kinds of practical biological problems. By the end of the book you'll have a solid understanding of Perl basics, a collection of programs for such tasks as parsing BLAST and GenBank, and the skills to take on more advanced bioinformatics programming. Some of the later chapters focus in greater detail on specific bioinformatics topics. This book is suitable for use as a classroom textbook, for self-study, and as a reference. The book covers:

5 out of 5 stars A practical introduction to programming for biologists.......2006-12-31

Although this book was written for biologists with no previous programming experience who have decided they need to learn to program in PERL, it is also useful for programmers entering the field of bioinformatics who need to learn the language. However, you should have some background in biology or else you'll be lost as to the purpose of the examples. That's because almost all of the examples and exercises are based on real biological problems, and this book will give you a good introduction to the most common bioinformatics programming problems and the most common computer-based biological data. This book is over five years old, but it still stands alone in that what it does it does better than any other book I've run across. The follow-on to this book is "Mastering Perl for Bioinformatics", and I recommend that book for both CS and biologist types that want to get into the more advanced parts of PERL and yet stay in the realm of learning the language via real biological problems. The following is a short run down of each chapter:

1. Biology and Computer Science - Covers some key concepts in molecular biology, as well as how biology and computer science fit together.

2. Getting Started with Perl - Shows you how to get Perl running on your computer and also talks about Perl's benefits.

3. The Art of Programming - Provides an overview as to how programmers accomplish their jobs. Some of the most important practical strategies good programmers use are explained, and where to find answers to questions that arise while you are programming is carefully laid out. These ideas are made concrete by brief narrative case studies that show how programmers, given a problem, find its solution.

4. Sequences and Strings - You start writing Perl programs with DNA and proteins. The programs transcribe DNA to RNA, concatenate sequences, make the reverse complement of DNA, and read sequence data from files. This is the first chapter to conclude with exercises.

5. Motifs and Loops - Continues demonstrating the basics of the Perl language with programs that search for motifs in DNA or protein, interact with users at the keyboard, write data to files, use loops and conditional tests, use regular expressions, and operate on strings and arrays.

6. Subroutines and Bugs -Extends the basic knowledge of Perl in two main directions: subroutines, which are an important way to structure programs, and the use of the Perl debugger, which can examine in detail a running Perl program.

7. Mutations and Randomizations - Genetic mutations, fundamental to biology, are modelled as random events using the random number generator in Perl. This chapter uses random numbers to generate DNA sequence data sets, and to repeatedly mutate DNA sequence. Loops, subroutines, and lexical scoping are also discussed.

8. The Genetic Code - How to translate DNA to proteins, using the genetic code. It also covers a good bit more of the Perl programming language, such as the hash data type, sorted and unsorted arrays, binary search, relational databases, and DBM, and how to handle FASTA formatted sequence data.

9. Restriction Maps and Regular Expressions - An introduction to Perl regular expressions. The main focus of the chapter is the development of a program to calculate a restriction map for a DNA sequence.

10. GenBank - The Genetic Sequence Data Bank (GenBank) is central to modern biology and bioinformatics. In this chapter, you learn how to write programs to extract information from GenBank files and libraries. You will also make a database to create your own rapid access lookups on a GenBank library.

11. Protein Data Bank - Develops a program that can parse Protein Data Bank (PDB) files. Some interesting Perl techniques are encountered while doing so, such as finding and iterating over lots of files and controlling other bioinformatics programs from a Perl program.

12. BLAST - Develops some code to parse a BLAST output file. Also mentioned are the Bioperl project and its BLAST parser, and some additional ways to format output in Perl.

13. Further Topics - Looks at topics beyond the scope of this book. These topics include sequence alignment methods like the Smith-Waterman algorithm and microarray techniques that enable the measurement of the relative levels of thousands of gene transcripts at a time. These topics are only briefly mentioned, and you are shown places outside of the book to get further information.

Appendix A - Resources for Perl and for bioinformatics programming, such as books and Internet sites.

Appendix B - Summary of those parts of the Perl language that will be most useful as you read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Reasonable book for learning Perl.......2006-11-11

For the students of molecular biology and genetics, and also other bioinformatics-related departments, this book is an above-average supply to study Perl.

5 out of 5 stars Mostly for the Biologist.......2006-09-20

People come to Bioinformatics from either the bio side or the CS side, with a few from various other disciplines. This book is best for the bio person who is getting into programming, not the programmer who is getting into bio.

For you CS types, I attended a tutorial by Tisdall on this material some years ago. One of the attendees asked why you needed an editor to code in Perl. That is the level that we are dealing with here!

It is a crime that biology and biochem students are not taught any perl- this is a very useful tool that will be more important as time goes on.

Perhaps someone could write a book on bioinformatics Perl for programmers someday, but that is not the goal of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beginning Perl for BioInformatics.......2006-01-17

Excellent book. The perl programming language is the most versitile and powerful software tool available today. This book was written for Biologists to learn this incredible programming language. Examples are pulled from real problems Biologists face and explained in terms they can understand. The book is clearly written.

5 out of 5 stars excellent introduction..........2005-12-31

i find this book is an excellent intoudction for one of the most intersting topic..The book is so easy to read if you know the elementary of molecular biology and begining introudction about perl. I do recommed this book to start with if you interested about programming for bioinformatics. You will be able to build simple bioinformatics programmes after reading this book as well as you will be able to understand easily how the commerically avaliable bioinformatics programs are working.

    Book Description

In the tradition of G. G. Simpson's classic work, Kenneth D. Rose's The Beginning of the Age of Mammals analyzes the events that occurred directly before and after the mysterious K-T boundary which so quickly thrust mammals from obscurity to planetary dominance.

Rose surveys the evolution of mammals, beginning with their origin from cynodont therapsids in the Mesozoic, contemporary with dinosaurs, through the early Cenozoic, with emphasis on the Paleocene and Eocene adaptive radiations of therian mammals. Focusing on the fossil record, he presents the anatomical evidence used to interpret behavior and phylogenetic relationships. The life's work of one of the most knowledgeable researchers in the field, this richly illustrated, magisterial book combines sound scientific principles and meticulous research and belongs on the shelf of every paleontologist and mammalogist.

    5 out of 5 stars A fantastic detailed guide.......2004-07-23

I have read many books like this (Seth, etc.) but the difference withi this book is that it is focussed on giving the reader specific exercises, along with examples and instructions, on how to "consciously create" your world.
The changes are almost immediate, since you are actually changing your thoughts on a minute by minute, day by day basis.
I have recently read Wayne Dyer's book, "The Power of Intention", which, as another reviewer stated, is very similar and draws upon this heavily. However, this material, possibly because it is coming from non-physical beings, is more succinct, clearer, and more comprehensive.
As Abraham says (I am paraphrasing): there is a small and growing number of people on earth who know that they create their own reality. Of those, there is an even smaller who are looking for the mechanisms of how to do this. It is this latter group for whom the book was written.
If you already know that you create your own reality, but want to know how to change the way you do it, and refine your methods, then this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars The book provides a whole new perspective towards life.......2003-11-18

The material that ABRAHAM presents resonates with Seth's materials. With easy to understand examples and analogies, ABRAHAM explains to us how we are indeed the creators of our lives and that our natural state is well being. The way that ABRAHAM presents the material is casual and can be applied practically and easily. ABRAHAM also provides fun little "games" (processes) that we can do everyday to enhance ourselves and how to become a deliberate creator (to take control of our lives).

Though is book has 278 pages, the later half of the book is actually consisted of Q&A from group sessions. Thus many of those covered topics are quite relavant to situations that we may encounter in real life. An issue of Jerry/Esther Hick's quarterly journal is also incorporated, which occupies around 40 pages.
Reading this book is definitely refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing More Than Feelings...........2003-03-31

New Beginning II is a great explanation of the surprisingly revolutionary concept that it is our feelings and emotions that really "create our reality". Most new thought books rightfully stress the importance of thoughts, however, the overwhelming number of thoughts we have are the by-products of our emotional responses to what we perceive. New Beginning II clearly explains how to deliberately change these emotional responses, creating feelings, that in turn will cycle back to the kinds of thoughts we have to have in order to produce the positive feelings, which in turn will reproduce the positive thoughts we need to create the reality we desire. Think of New Beginning II as sort of "Seth Material dumbed down", it's less intellectually challenging than the Seth Material, but no less effective. I also find it interesting that Jerry and Esther Hicks proudly acknowledge the significance of the Seth Material and Jane Roberts...this is a positive reflection of the Hicks' ethical integrity-unlike the legions of New Thought authors who have been ripping off Seth/Jane for years, the Hicks' are honest about their spiritual heritage.

5 out of 5 stars THE manual for conscious creation........2001-05-31

This book contains and further elaborates on most of the information given in the first book (vol I) except the planetary alignment stuff. The information in this and volume I is extremely practical information, as opposed to very theoretical. Again like volume I this book gives you the mechanics of conscious creation and how the universe works to bring things into physical manifestation. This book gives back meaning by showing you every thought you have has an impact in your life and the life of others. This book can show you why your life is a product of your thoughts and beliefs. If I was given the choice of only one book it would be this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Life Improving Form of Thought Available.......2000-12-12

Great book! Great philosophy! Buy it and hundreds for your friends if you are ready for this advanced thought. This book served as a summary of the many Abraham-Hicks audio tapes I have listened to over the past year. I too have read hundreds of books on philosophy, metaphysics, new age, religion, self-help and this is the best in terms of practical ways to create a wonderful life for yourself. Also, great explanations on how our Universe works by a group of wise non-physical teachers. Read it and try not to get happier.

First I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Archbishop Anthony Bloom for writing this book! It is an EXCELLENT place to begin or even re-begin learning about prayer and praying in general.

I'm personally very interested in Christian orthodoxy, but this is a great book for ALL Christians!

At just over 100 pages, it makes a quick read but is very deep and insightful. Definitely recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great place to start and reread along the way.......2006-02-24

I am not sure why I had not reviewed this book years ago. It is one of the best books on prayer that I have ever read. The sample pages speak for themselves, so I won't repeat the content. A true gem!

Also, Mountain of Silence and Father Arseney are two other books on prayer and the spiritual life that you'll enjoy reading over and over.

    Best wishes!

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Moving Book.......2003-12-10

For anyone who is seeking a deeper prayer life, whether as one who is beginning a journey or someone who is well along the path of faith, this work is an undescribably rich gift from Metropolitan Anthony to the reader. As I read each chapter, I found myself challenged and encouraged to take my prayer life more deeply inward.

Metropolitan Anthony does not just introduce techniques or give situational advice to finding a fuller prayer life, He challenges the reader to examine an entirely different way of looking at the source of deep and effective prayer. Unlike many evangelical books on the topic, Metropolitan Anthony seeks to teach us how to fish (to use the well worn cliche) so that we may be fed for a lifetime.

I encourage anyone who reads this review to buy this book, read it slowly, over time and allow it to enrich your relationship with God.

5 out of 5 stars So Much Wisdom In So Few Pages.......2002-10-20

Though hailed as a primer for "people who have never prayed before", this book, written by Archbishop Anthony Bloom, is nothing short of spectacular. The book's orinigal title, "School of Prayer" is more appropiate because this book should be utilized by all Christians.

In the last few years, a resurgence of prayer books liek the "Prayer of Jabex" by Wilkinson and "Prayer of Jesus" and "The Covering" by Hannagraff are selling of the charts, this book by Bloom is far more superior than their text. Though only about 144 pages, there is much wisdom and the book should be read slowly after much spiritual contemplation.

It is easy to read, yet it contains so much theological depth that it is truly amazing. The first 20 pages are average as it has an interview with Bloom. The real meat begins in chapter one title "The Absence of God" where Bloom writes, "If you look at the relationship (us and God) in terms of mutual relationship, you would see that God could complain about us a great deal more thann we about Him. We complain that He does make Himself present to us for a few minutes we reserve for Him, but what about the twenty-three and half hours during which God may be knocking at our door and we answer 'I am busy..."

This is just a taste - buy the book for a deep look at prayer. You will forever be thankful.

5 out of 5 stars Beginning and Ending.......2001-01-29

This book is a very short and easy 114 pages.

In it, Metropolitan Anthony manages to produce not only an amazingly clear exposition of Orthodox prayer life, a semi-autobiographical memoir, the beginnings of a modern Christian existential philosophy, and an excellent response to some of the more childish criticisms of religious belief - but, on the whole he produces an excellent piece of literature; full of charming motifs, impassioned narratives, icy-cold journalism, etymologies in partial jest, and mythologies in half seriousness -- All of this emeshed in tentacles of surrealist imagery.

Whether you are an open-minded atheist, a growing Christian looking for practical advice from an elder at prayer, or a thoughtful and critical reader, dissatisfied with two-dimensional dogmatic answers and impatient with ethereal theological theories and jargon, here is an introduction to real Christianity from someone who is not full of it. Rather, he is quite full of humility. (You'll have to read the book to get the joke).

    peace, Didymous

5 out of 5 stars Sage Advice, Balance with Prayer.......2006-06-01

During the first year, the new pastor and congregation set the tone of their ministry partnership. They establish enduring patterns of relating to God and each other. Kennon Callahan here offers sage advice to pastors and congregations beginning together, or attempting to remedy a poor start by beginning again. I recommend this book highly. In fact, I incorporated some of Callahan's insights into a devotional book for new pastors and church members to read during their first 12 months together. Jesus began his public ministry with 40 days of prayer (Matthew 4), so you may wish to check out "Welcome, Pastor: Building a Productive Pastor-Congregation Partnership in 40 Days." Starting well deserves your careful, prayerful attention. Callahan writes, "How you begin shapes how you continue and where you end."

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide and an Easy Read.......2006-05-05

During a recent pastor's coffee in a state far from my own, I asked for advice as I prepared to move to new churches and a very different situation from my previous pastoral experience. Dr. Jim Carpenter lent me his copy of this book (I have since purchased my own)with a stern warning to return his copy. After reading, I understand why. The book is full of friendly annecdotes all pointing away from the stepping-stone and mega-church model back into the mission-oriented church we all dreamed of at seminary.

The narrative style runs through the book, but Callahan doesn't stop with annecdotal information. He makes clear and convincing arguments for doing certain things certain ways - much of the advice goes against the words of wisdom offered me at my last church. The words are well measured and warm in tone.

You'll finish the book on a quiet Friday... but you won't be finished with the book and its ideas for many months. Buy it, enjoy it, and try it out!

4 out of 5 stars A New Beginning for Pastors and Congregations.......2000-04-30

Kennon Callahan is well known for his previous books and consulting work. This latest book is aimed at helping pastors who are starting out in a new congregation or pastors and congregations who want to renew their relationship. Callahan has a fresh focus for this reader. So many of the church experts today urge pastors to focus on the problems of their new congregations. Callahan insists that the key to an effective ministry is an early focus on relationships. He describes how a new pastor should plan the first three months around key visits to regular worshippers, shut-ins and hospitalized. He also has suggestions for getting quickly involved in the community, scouting out the church's mission field, developing a team of leaders and setting goals. The best thing about Callahan's approach is his gentle and confident attitude and the flexibility of his advice.
