Book Description
An informative, compassionate guide to the motherhood decision
"...give(s) a sense of what's ahead for new parents." --Baltimore Sun
Many women aren't sure how to best time motherhood in their lives. Others think they may want a child but aren't sure they really want to take on the responsibility. Still others want to be child-free, but they are afraid they will regret the decision later on when it's too late. Do I Want to Be a Mom? offers expert information, insights, and tools necessary for each woman to make her own best choice.
Dr. Diana Dell, an expert who is board certified in both obstetrics/gynecology and psychiatry, draws on her expertise to cover the emotional, physical, sexual, social, and financial aspects of this decision. Along with award-winning writer Suzan Erem, she also provides powerful anecdotes from women who speak openly of the fears, joys, regrets, and triumphs of motherhood or being child-free.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-03-16
It may be somewhat basic, but this book is about helping you open your mind and it allows you to explore the choice of having a child. I feel it doesn't go into a lot of detail because the author didn't want to pressure the choice in either direction. It makes you look at women differently. Makes you wonder how they made up their mind about becoming a mom or not. I think it helps to talk in person to women about things. And reading this book has made me want to talk more openly about this huge choice.
Very Objective.......2007-01-09
It definitely addressed all the questions floating through my head about whether or not I want to change my life. The only aspect that I didn't care for is that it made termination of the pregnancy such a open choice - I would have preferred a Christian author so that wasn't a factor of discussion.
The outline of the book was also helpful because you could skip the chapters that didn't apply to you and not feel like you were missing anything.
Reiterates dilemmas, but doesn't provide insightful answers.......2005-01-05
Very disappointing, no substance, mostly full of quotes from individuals who are not very illuminating either. If you just want to know that you are in good company with your indecision, this book if fine. If you would like it to provide you with answers (as the title suggests) or assist you with your decision, it's not worth your time or money.
Too Basic .......2004-12-03
I was looking to read something that would really stimulate my thinking and allow me to think about this topic in a new way, with the hope that I could come to some answers for myself. What I got was a very cursory overview of many potentially relevant aspects of this topic with nothing I could really "sink my teeth into." To give you an idea about how basic the material is, I was able to read the whole thing in one sitting in bed one night before going to sleep. Overall not very useful and I would not buy this book again.
Interesting but lacks depth.......2004-05-19
While this book contains a wide range of topics of interest to those considering parenthood, it doesn't cover these topics with very much detail. I would have found it more helpful if the stories of the women interviewed had been longer than a paragraph apiece. Overall, this book is useful in that it brings up many important issues for consideration, but in my opinion, it served only as a "springboard" for further research.

Read this before ever even thinking of settling down!.......2006-06-02
Smart decisions have better consequences than foolish ones. A wise handbook of making time to design the life you want ... especially when you are baggage free and can extend your prime a long time.
Very Motivating.......2001-05-15
In reading this book, I have become more responsible and self assured. The exercises that Tessina has included in this book are just wonderful. I kept a pencil handy while I was reading the book and there notes everywhere! I go back through those notes from time to time to refresh myself. I have since lent my copy to several friends. I am sure it will help them too. I highly recommend this book to young women! Also, even though it is geared towards women, the ideas can apply for men also.
Straightforward advice for the muddled.......1999-03-05
I'm well past 40 but I still have trouble making decisions and looked at this book partly to see if it would be helpful for my daughter, who also has trouble making decisions. This is straightforward advice about how (in arriving at life decisions) to sort out your gut feelings, what other people expect of you, what's practical, and what you can live with -- with a useful section on how to be your own good boss instead of your own bad boss. Coming from the publishers of the Chicken Soup books , I am surprised to find something so immensely level-headed. I'm sending my copy to my daughter.
You don't have to be under 40 to learn these lessons!.......1998-10-29
I've just started reading this book. The advice is so good and full of such common sense that my reaction has been, "Well, of course. Why didn't I think of that!" I have no doubt that this book will be a part of the changes I am making in my life. I'ved got 4 1/2 years to go 'til I'm 40, and making the best decisions I can in that time will serve me well for all the rest of my years.
Excellent advice; I gave it to my 30 year old daughter.......1998-10-27
A great deal of "Mother wisdom" in one place.

Customer Reviews:
Must Read Book for Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer.......2007-01-11
The diagnosis of Brest Cancer usually comes unexpected and is emotionally overwhelming. Decisions that will have a lifelong impact often need to be made within a short period of time. The authors explain in detail all the different screening options, the various treatment options at all stages of the desease, and, most important, surgical reconstructive procedures performed either in conjuntion with a mastectomy/lumptectomy or at a later time. Diagrams, drawings, and "before and after" pictures help to visualize the results of reconstructive surgery.
A Woman's Decision.......2005-09-11
I did not particularly care for this book - too broad and not easy to read - too general.
Like talking to 17 Friends Who've Been There.......2002-10-08
I had a bilateral mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction in May 2002. The decisions I had to make were agonizing. This book was the best I found on the subject, and I read and re-read the case histories that were closest to my own situation. The information proved to be accurate and gave me a realistic expectation of the process and the results. I recommend this book to anyone undergoing breast surgery, with or without reconstruction, as it covers a wide array of decisions that other women have made.
A Woman's Decision.......2000-03-03
My plastic surgeon gave me this book to read. It was the best book on breast cancer I've found, and I've built up quite a library lately. It aided me in my treatment decision as well as my reconstruction choice. It also explained my pathology report better than any of my doctors. A great book for any breast cancer patient or her family.
One of a Kind.......1999-11-27
There are many, many books out there dealing with breast cancer and treatment but this was the only one I could find that really helps a woman decide what course to take if she thinks she wants to have reconstructive surgery. I found it so helpful I recommended it to my doctor.Making a decision to have reconstructive surgery is hard enough, but then you have to decide what type you would like to have, what your choices are depending on your type of cancer and treatment, and, when to have the surgery.Especially helpful are the black and white photos of the results of each type of operation as well as touching and honest real life descriptions of experiences by women who have had these types of surgeries.Having actually gone through a mastectomy with simultaneous "tram flap" reconstuction, I can attest to the accuracy of both the medical information and the emotional descriptions contained in the book.

Book Description
Bestselling author and family therapist Tina Tessina is an expert on decision-making, and her seminars, workshops, and lectures have women all across the country responding with tremendous enthusiasm to her concise, practical, and easy-to-use advice and techniques.Even the most accomplished women waver at times."In workshops and therapy sessions, I encounter people hungry for guidelines.Even people who are already established and successful seek a clear explanation of which decisions are smartest for their particular situation. It is my job to know what will help women who are having to weigh issues and options."Learn to make decisions like a CEO!"Women who make tough and smart decisions are often criticized for it, while men making similar decisions are praised and lionized. The result is that many women are reluctant to be decisive, and that attitude has given them little chance to learn how to make decisions effectively."Intuitive hunches are not sufficient for organizing a satisfying life."This is a nuts-and-bolts book about how to decide. While spiritual or metaphysical explorations can be rewarding, those kinds of things are not very helpful with the concrete decision-making skills and practical thinking life can require."Tina Tessina's top ten: 1. Make your life your own 2. Reinvent your life roles 3. Revitalize your career 4. Enhance your friendships 5. Stay healthy 6. Secure your financial future 7. Fulfill your life's dreams 8. Have more fun 9. Create joy and meaning in your life 10. Give something back"Each chapter fully explains one of these decisions, delineates why it is important, and offers personal stories, examples, resources, guidelines, and exercises that show the reader how each decision can be used in real-life situations."
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book!.......2001-06-23
This is a must-read book, especially if you're over 40 or dreading turning 40. Dr. Tessina helped me see that reaching this milestone age is actually an opportunity for a new beginning by viewing life from a new prospective. "The Ten Smartest ecisions A Woman Can Make After Forty" is a most inte guide and handbook for getting the most out of the second part of one's life because Tessina turns her atto the special challenges and opportunities available to women over 40. She believes that by grabbing the reins and taking back control of you'll remove the fear that comes with passing forty and then on a new vista of freedom and opportunity for yourself. After reading this book over and overagain, I can confirm that all women, whether you're just approaching 40, recently turned forty, or have been 39 for years, will find this practicial and informative book filled with mapping options and outlining strategies for taking control of one's life. I can't wait to read her other books because this one is so terrific.
Practical and Empowering.......2001-06-19
I just turned 40, so with this title I had to read this! I liked that the book focuses on what you can do rather than where you may have gone wrong. The author rightfully stresses that the decisions we make directly affect the quality of our lives, and encourages us to reevaluate our choices according to what we now know. Her advice is both useful and empowering. This is a great gift for anyone facing 40!
Puts Your Life and Your Dreams in Good Order.......2001-06-15
Tessina tells you exactly how to pull the pieces of your life together the way YOU want them to be. Whether you're a touch over 40 or in your 60s,helpful guidelines explain how to make the hard decisions women face--be they about your health, your friends, finances, your values or your responsibilities. The advice on how to research and think through life changes is most valuable for executing personal decisions and achieving your dreams. She's given me the tools and confidence to go after my dreams. The book energizes you and will alter how you think about yourself and the direction of your life-all for the better.
Great wisdom for women.......2001-06-09
The big 4-0 can either level us or lift us up. Tina Tessina's book shows us how to embrace our life experiences, use our accumulated wisdom, and create more with the lives that we have. At forty, we're beyond the ego-centric focus of youth (or at least we should be) but we know enough to care for ourselves and make ourselves a priority. I found myself showing passages from this book to my aunts, my 40+ friends, my mother, and anyone else who would listen to me. This book helps us get our priorities in line so that we can walk up through our 40s with strength, not with shame or fear. Now, any friend of mine who's turning 40 is getting a copy of this book.
A synthesis of practical wisdom.......2001-05-02
I give this less than five stars partly because it's not the kind of book I normally read (someone gave me a copy) but I found the advice about how to be friends with your adult children useful. For example, Tessina suggests discussing adult topics with your adult child, not just family topics or questions about their personal life. Or if your adult child says or does something annoying, treat it just as casually as you would if it were someone else's adult kid saying something annoying (ignore it and don't let yourself be drawn into a family squabble).
Here is a quotation starting a chapter that catches the flavor of the book: "What we must keep remembering is that our bodies respond to the feminine principle, the goddess. They respond to rest, to nurturing, to a presence that says you are okay just the way you are." -- quoting Dr. Christiane Northrup

Customer Reviews:
Makes time management seem easy.......2006-10-24
How to Say No and Live to Tell About It by Mary M. Byers is a practical guide for busy women. If you lack assertiveness, and have trouble prioritizing your commitments, this book may be for you. Byers writes from her own experiences as a busy woman, offering advice and inspiration to get through the day.
Extremely short chapters make reading this thin volume a breeze--a must for the busy women Byers is writing for. Surely Byers, who is a professional speaker and freelance writer, uses some of her own tips to manage her packed schedule.
The one downfall of How to Say No and Live to Tell About It is the way Byers uses Bible verses. She quoted a few verses completely out of context and used others to apply to different topics than they were originally meant to reference. It is almost as if Byers wrote a useful book on time management, and then decided she wanted to market it to a Christian audience as an afterthought, interspersing the Bible verses later.
Despite this issue, How to Say No and Live to Tell About It makes the daunting tasks of time management and assertiveness development seem easy for even the busiest of women. Bible verses that apply to the topic at hand in the correct context would make this book more worthwhile.[...]
A Practical Read to Empower Women.......2006-05-02
I learned something useful about saying "No" just flipping through the pages. This is a helpful read for women who tend to resist saying a firm "No" and get over-committed. I like the comparison of Naysayers and No-Sayers (p. 76), the "don't do" list (p. 108), and the Taking Action and Discovery Questions at the end of each chapter. Could be a personal study guide or used in a group.
Brenda Nixon, author of Parenting Power in the Early Years
If you're a yes, person-- read this book!.......2006-04-28
Whether you are a people pleaser or a yes-aholic, this book gets to the root of why it is ingrained in women to be available to everyone.
After reading this book I discovered I was overloaded with commitments, not enjoying myself AND unable to remember why I said yes!
Mary reminds us that as Christians we are to be mindful of God's covenant to each other--love each other as we would love God. Yet when the act of saying yes becomes a mindless action we lose touch with this covenant.
This is a workbook that anyone can pick up as an introduction to making life manageable and fun or as a refresher course on how to stay present in our lives into.
Armchair Interviews says: If you are a sometimes unhappy "yes" person, check out this book's message.
find joy by saying NO.......2006-04-11
Lately, I've been looking for ways to be more joyful. One of the things that can steal our joy is being too busy doing things that we really don't want to do, according to Mary Byers' new book. She encourages readers to look at why they have trouble saying no, and begin to say it, "rather than letting a sense of obligation dictate your life."
This is a very practical book with extremely short, to the point chapters-great for people who are too busy to read. Each chapter ends with a "taking action" step and "discovery questions" to help you apply the lessons of each chapter, which cover important topics like passion, simplicity, focus, guilt, fatigue.
For those who have trouble saying that little word that brings back sanity and joy in your life: "no," this book will be a life-saver. But the idea is not necessarily to say no to everything, but to determine your passion, your focus and what brings you joy, and say yes to that!
She writes, "When you apply focus to your passion and priorities, you'll not only be more effective, but you'll find contentment and inner joy as well."
This is a practical book that's easy to read, but really pushes you to apply what you learn. if you have trouble saying no, say yes to picking up a copy of this book and reading it!
Personal, Practical Advice for Prioritizing Life.......2006-04-02
This book struck a nerve or two.
Often, as I read it, I felt like Mary was talking directly to me. And she made it easy to listen! She wasn't condemning me ... she was relating to me. She's been there, done that, and offers practical advice to those of us who may struggle with saying no or yes to the appropriate opportunities.
It won't happen over night, I'm sure, but I'm working on creating my very own "noasis."
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to better manage their time and gifts, answer God's call and feel confident about their decisions.
Proud to be a "no-queen" in training!

Godly female empowerment.......2003-12-14
In my opinion, THIS is the book that should be used in women's Bible study groups. Many women want to feel more empowered but unfortunately must turn to worldly sources for encouragement. That's sad because the message for women often promoted in churches doesn't truly reflect the heart of God.
We don't need another book telling us about gender differences, something most people know anyway. We don't need any more books about how to be a more "feminine" woman or "submissive" wife. We need something to help us work past harmful stereotypes and work together the way God intended and this is it!! The sources on gender "roles" just don't cut it anymore.

This is one of christian eqalitarian books that affected me most in being factual and devotional and target oriented all at the same time. Also, this is the book that I found many women pick up to read or buy when offered.

Book Description
Why do men and women approach sex and romance differently? Anthropologist Heather
Remoff employs a scientist's precision and a woman's wit to expose the biological rules behind the mating game. Women can use these insights to control their romantic destinies. The Los Angeles Times calls Sexual Choice "Splendid...charming." Women call it empowering.
Customer Reviews:
BRILLIANT & HONEST!.......2001-03-12
This book isn't a "how-to," but rather a thoughtful dissertation on "what-is." It deals honestly with the conscious and subconscious decision-making process inherent in mating. As both a man and a person, I am grateful to Dr. Remoff for writing this book.
