Product Description
Birth - 18 months. A straight-forward and light-hearted approach to teaching infants how to communicate using simple American Sign Language (ASL) signs.
Amazon.com
Sign with Your Baby Complete Learning Kit will enable you to communicate at new levels with your baby long before she can speak. This comprehensive package of book, video, and reference guide shows how simple gestures can communicate ideas like "I'm hungry" or "help me." Caregivers grasp baby's needs immediately rather than learn through trial and error. Dr. Joseph Garcia has designed the system so it's not necessary to learn an entire new language, although it also provides a terrific start in American Sign Language for a hearing-impaired child. A fascinating introduction delves into the development of language in children and uses informative line drawings to demonstrate over 150 hand signs for all kinds of actions and nouns. The accompanying video provides practical tips for getting started, some insight into the hows and whys of this method from Dr. Burton White (director of the Center for Parent Education), and inspiring sights of young babies signing effectively with their caregivers. The laminated quick-reference guide lists some of the most common words in any parent's day: cookie, no, and up are but a few. Garcia's clear, concise methods make learning a breeze, and caregivers gain outstanding new abilities to give the best possible care for the babies entrusted to them. --Jill Lightner
Customer Reviews:
Too much marketing, Not enough vocab........2007-05-26
I started at 7 months, he picked up the first sign at about 10 months, and the rest came around 1 yr. The video/book combination is good because the video shows you the signs and the book is handy for a quick reference.
Drawbacks:
1. I felt like much of the video was still trying to sell me on the idea of doing sign with my baby. It could focus less on marketing and present the information more efficiently.
2. The sign vocabulary is limited to the first stage of sign language learning only. It could be improved by including more vocabulary.
Best Baby Sign Language program.......2007-05-14
I have compared this program with other sign language programs, and it seems to be the best one I have come across so far. At one point, I taught another baby sign language course, whose name I will not mention. The program's signs did not always come close to actual sign language, which I found was offensive to the deaf community. Joseph Garcia's program follows actual signs from ASL, and the program is easy enough to learn if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. I would definitely recommend this baby sign language program for other mothers - the resources are varied - book, DVD, quick reference guide - it's the best out there!!
Awesome purchase.......2007-05-13
I was really glad I purchased this. It is very easy and easy to work into your play time. Recommend it well worth the price
A must buy!.......2007-05-10
I bought this and started introducing it to my daughter as soon as she was brought home from the hospital. Each time I would give her her milk bottle I would do the sign for milk. She signed for milk at age 6 months old. Before she turned a year old, she did the sign for change (the diaper), then it went on and on. Now I kinda kick my butt for teaching her how to do the sign language when she was a baby because she is super articulate for her age and just recently she successfully completed transitional math for kindergarteners-1st graders at age 3.
The DVD is great.......2007-03-15
Just watching the DVD has given me enough to start signing with my 11 month old. I still need to read the book, but it's easy to learn just by watching the DVD. I really like how it shows all these babies doing the signs. These parents' lives seem so much easier because they can communicate with their babies. We've been doing the signs for about a month now and I think he's doing the sign for "more" and he recognizes the sign for "brush teeth" because that's his favorite part of the day. He gets a huge grin on his face when I do it because he knows what's coming up.

"No Easy Answers".......2000-04-02
Being the Parent of a L.D. (Learning Disabled)Child, I found the hardest part of the entire process to be finding a doctor who could accurately access my child's disability and then finding guidelines to help him grow to his fullest potential. My Early Childhood Development Doctor gave me "No Easy Answers". This book has been the ONLY one which accurately describes my son's problems and which precisely offers guidelines for his education and for living successfully with him. This is our bible on how to best communicate with our Son, how best to integrate him successfully into our family of six, and how to foster his strong points and nurture his weaknesses. I whole heartedly recommend this book for any parent struggling with a child with neurological difficulties. There is hope for our children. This book sheds some light into an otherwise overwhelming task. Good Reading!

Customer Reviews:
OK.......2007-06-23
At first, I really appreciated this book. I'm very new to homeschooling. Trying to cobble together a worthwile curriculum for my young son when I had no idea what all was out there was very daunting so when I found this at the library quite by accident, I was excited. Finally, I thought, I will learn more about the various programs, curriculm, etc. that was available to help me make a more informed choice. While I have settled on a Waldorf base, I was also interested in Charlotte Mason and Montessori among others. My son is a very hands on learner, a Wiggly Willy if you will. I was pondering the notion of ordering this because there was more information than I could absorb in only three weeks, especially with four children to chase after and trying to move residence. I noticed the Christian overtones but that's ok. I did like the ideas of putting quotes on the fridge to learn (it didn't have to be a bile verse), etc. I also don't mind the Bible. There are a lot of moral issues that everyone would do good to read and learn by. However, I started to get a little upset towards the end of chapter 2. She was talking how there is religion and spirituality in all aspects of learning, intentional or not. That didn't bother me too much because for the most part it's true. Ones spirituality directly colors your views of life and those around you, especially how you learn. I do believe in God, or a higher power if you will. I do believe that we were all created although not quite to the extent of the views in Creationism. However, this quote quite offended me: "In literature texts and readers we often find folk tales of various pagan gods that show us how each of the gods "blessed" those who followed their instructions. The implication is that all "gods" are created equal. Those same texts probably include no stores about the one true God, and certainly none that imply He is the only one we should obey." This offended me because although I do believe there is a God, I also believe that there is a Goddess. Everyone needs a helpmate and there are always two sides of a coin to balance it all out. I also believe that all the different names for Him in all the different cultures, all are describing the same power. I am on a Pagan path but I don't mind some Christian influence in my children's learning. Just as I don't mind several other religions in the mix. I'm a Unitarian and we embrace all religions as equal. I was expecting a book that told me of all options out there, but for this to be the most comprehensive book of curriculum, it needs to include all of the best, regardless of whether it had a Christian view or not. There were also several curriculum and programs that I had heard about and wished to learn more but were hardly mentioned, if they were there at all. If you are new to homeschooling, and you want curriculum with a Christian base, this is an excellant book and a must have. Even if you want a non religious base, there is still some great info on the products available, and I did like most of the chapter helping to choose what type of style best fit me and my child and to identify what area's are best for me to focus on. Even if you don't want a Christian based curriculum, this would be a good book to look at so you could get a good idea of what you may or may not want or need. I was hoping to add this to my small library of slowly growing homeschool books, but in the end I was glad that I checked this out at the library and saved my very small budget for something that I can actually use.
Too much info.......2007-06-21
I bought this book so when I went searching for curriculum I wouldn't be so overwhelmed. I'm more overwhelmed now. Plus there really is no discussion on web based schools such as K12 or The Grace Academy.
A must read, especially for the new homeschooler........2007-06-13
This is a VERY helpful book. I am easily overwhelmed by the shear number of curriculum choices and this book helped narrow my range of choices based on learning styles. The descriptions of the reviewed materials are quite helpful. The author also suggested writing a Philosophy of Education, which really clarified the direction I wanted to take with the education of my children. I highly recommend this book, but make sure you read the introductory chapters and answer the questions/write your own philosophy for your family; otherwise, I don't think it will be as beneficial.
This Book is a "Top-Pick" for Choosing Homeschool Curriculum.......2007-05-31
I purchased this book 2-weeks ago and have used it cover to cover! I will have a first grader and kindergardener next year. It is very helpful and has some great suggestions for curriculum. I have been doing kindergarden with my 5-year old daughter this year and we used an all-in-one curriculum (or "umbrella" as Duffy calls it). Snore! It is 3/4 workbooks and she "hates" it. That is not what I wanted for our start into homeschooling. So I went back to the drawing board.
The book begins with encouraging you to start with goal setting. Besides your state's requirements(if applicable), what do you want your child to learn? How do you want to run your homeschool? Then she explains the philosophies/methods of education such as, Charlotte Mason, Classical, Unit Study, Eclectic mix and traditional textbooks. She also covers "Umbrella" programs (those that sell complete curriculum packages such as Calvert). She leads you through detailed questions and charts to help you put together your philosophy of education so that you can narrow down your curriculum choices. The coverage of homeschooling methods is not as exhaustive as Mary Pride's Mary Pride's Complete Guide to Getting Started in Homeschooling book, but it still is very comprehensive. I already knew that I liked the Classical Method, along with Charlotte Mason, and Unit Studies methods and her guide helped me to find curriculum that incorporates all three!
Then she covers learning styles and learning modalities. I have a "wiggly willy" and a "sociable sue" (at least this year). As Duffy cautions, this may change as the children grow and develop. These learning styles are not meant to be labels, but rather to help you pick curriculum that will hold the interest of your child. She gives advice on teaching to your children's strenghts no matter what their learning style.
Duffy then puts all the information you've learned about yourself and your children into review charts and rates them by product. It's hard to explain on paper, but using a rating of 1 to 5, she rates products across categories such as learning style, whether parent instruction is needed, for one or multiple students, how much writing, how much prep time, whether it is grade-level specific or can be used for multiple grades (important if you have more than one child that are different ages and want to teach them at the same time), ease of teacher use, if a teacher's manual is necessary or not useful, whether it supports Charlotte Mason's philosophy, supports Classical education and whether it is suitable for Protestant, Catholic or Nonsectarian. Yes, it is comprehensive and it cuts to the chase! If you like Unit Studies, you want Christian curriculum, and you have a Wiggly Willy - look for 4's and 5's under those categories in the boxes beside each product. If you don't want a lot of prep time, look for 1's and 2's. I got my highlighter out and highlighted the 4's and 5's under the categories important to me and that weeded out the rest and showed the products that I needed to review.
The categories of curriculum covered are: Phonics, Reading and Literature; Mathematics; Language Arts: Grammar and Composition; Language Arts: Spelling and Vocabulary; History/Social Studies; Science; Unit Studies; Foreign Language (a few); Miscellaneous (like art, health, logic and umbrella programs). The chart also gives the page number to the review of that product.
The rest of the book is the actual reviews of the top 100 picks. In the reviews she tells you what is included with the product, which grade levels the product covers, some have how long the studies should take (especially in the unit studies), as well as what she likes about the product. She even tells you what she thinks the drawbacks of the product are if there are any in her opinion.
The bottom line, is this is a very useful book, but most especially if you are a Christian. The coverage is definitely more toward Protestant products, but there are Catholic and nonsectarian options as well. So far I have ordered Five in a Row unit studies and Media Angels science books. I'm very excited about this school year. We will keep the boring workbooks to a minimum this time! I chose a different phonics program (a vertical phonics program from TATRAS) but other than that, my picks will be from this guide. I also recommend reading Mary Pride's book and Rebecca Rupp's Home Learning Year by YearHome Learning Year by Year: How to Design a Homeschool Curriculum from Preschool Through High School. Happy Homeschooling!
Very Helpful.......2007-05-26
I purchased this book right before the homeschool convention. It really helped to clarify what I needed based on my children's needs.

Medication? Maybe. Marry the right person and find the right job? A must if you are an adult suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). So say psychiatrists Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey, authors of the influential Driven to Distraction, published in 1994. In their new book, Delivered from Distraction, Hallowell and Ratey survey the current medical landscape concerning ADD, combining their own clinical observations with the latest research to paint a much more complex and, in many ways, positive picture of the condition than has generally been presented.
Hallowell and Ratey embrace the idea that success in life comes more from playing to your strengths than overcoming your weaknesses. In the case of a person with ADD (child or adult), these strengths often include unusually high levels of creativity, charisma, intelligence, and energy. The authors insist that, while medication and other treatments can sometimes work wonders in reducing limitations, surrounding yourself with people who promote these positive traits, be they in your personal or professional life, is the single most important element to living well with ADD. As both Hallowell and Ratey are not only experts in the field, but "ADDers" themselves, the tips and stories they share for how to do so are fresh, funny, and far more helpful than tired arguments over drugs verse no drugs or whether there's even such a thing as ADD at all.--Patrick Jennings
Book Description
In 1994, Driven to Distraction sparked a revolution in our understanding of attention deficit disorder. Widely recognized as the classic in the field, the book has sold more than a million copies. Now a second revolution is under way in the approach to ADD, and the news is great. Drug therapies, our understanding of the role of diet and exercise, even the way we define the disorder–all are changing radically. And doctors are realizing that millions of adults suffer from this condition, though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated. In this new book, Drs. Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey build on the breakthroughs of Driven to Distraction to offer a comprehensive and entirely up-to-date guide to living a successful life with ADD.
As Hallowell and Ratey point out, “attention deficit disorder” is a highly misleading description of an intriguing kind of mind. Original, charismatic, energetic, often brilliant, people with ADD have extraordinary talents and gifts embedded in their highly charged but easily distracted minds. Tailored expressly to ADD learning styles and attention spans, Delivered from Distraction provides accessible, engaging discussions of every aspect of the condition, from diagnosis to finding the proper treatment regime. Inside you’ll discover
• whether ADD runs in families
• new diagnostic procedures, tests, and evaluations
• the links between ADD and other conditions
• how people with ADD can free up their inner talents and strengths
• the new drugs and how they work, and why they’re not for everyone
• exciting advances in nonpharmaceutical therapies, including changes in diet, exercise, and lifestyle
• how to adapt the classic twelve-step program to treat ADD
• sexual problems associated with ADD and how to resolve them
• strategies for dealing with procrastination, clutter, and chronic forgetfulness
ADD is a trait, a way of living in the world. It only becomes a disorder when it impairs your life. Featuring gripping profiles of patients with ADD who have triumphed, Delivered from Distraction is a wise, loving guide to releasing the positive energy that all people with ADD hold inside. If you have ADD or care about someone who does, this is the book you must read.
From the Hardcover edition.

My husband never finished it. . . .......2007-06-13
Obviously not written well enough for a distracted man to read it.
Lots of great info........2007-05-20
After doing a lot of research on the internet and lots of problems with my 8 year old I was feeling like a failure. I knew something was wrong, but I wasn't sure what. After reading this book it told me all the steps to take to get my son evaluated by a child psychologist and at school. I had no clue where to even go so this book helped me out a lot. There are websites mentioned in the book that help too.
Delivered..........2007-05-18
I think there are two ways to read this and Hallowell's other book. At first, each sentence felt like a kick in the gut to me. It felt so disabling; thinking of all the ways ADD can manifest itself and become an obstacle, how it had in my past and how it could in my future. But I think I was reading it with too much negativity. It's very easy to use these examples as a crutch, but in Delivered, Hallowell is framing his argument to be enlightening, not depressing.
Last night I started tearing up at some lines. It's so unifying, to know other people think this way, and to hear him describe it NOT as a disease or a dysfunction, just a difference in the way the brain processes information and sensations. ADDers are prone to negativity, which breeds more negativity, and so on. If you instead read this book with a positive approach, it's articulation, not punches in the gut.
To Hallowell, the only "disorder" present is that you can't bracket out the things that (supposedly) don't matter. To someone with ADD, everything matters, all stimuli is significant, all windows should be looked out, all ideas blurted out loud, all daydreams explored by the imagination. Sure this gets in the way of productivity, but I don't know if being that sensitive to input and engaged with life can really be described as a disorder.
I really believe this book will help people harness all their chaos and use it - whether it's with list-making and highlighters, the help of a good friend, planners, therapy, medication, creative outlets, whatever. There will still be chaos, but chaos with reason. Like really great guitar solos.
"We may make messes wherever we go, but with the right help, those messes can be turned into realms of reason and art." - Edward M. Hallowell.
Long on problem description short on answer description..........2007-05-02
As someone new to the idea that I probably have ADD, this book gave me a lot of touchpoints from which I could discern that I probably have that "kind of mind". Yet there was precious little as far as definitive coping strategy is concerned.
They say in the book that a person with ADD needs lots of file cabinets, because they don't have "file cabinets" in their minds. That seems to be true of me. Yet the book is seems to be as disorderly as an ADD brain if you asked me. It rambles on and on with STORIES about ADD people and STORIES about ADD solutions. But there is little in the way of ORDERLY step by step "here's what you should do" stuff.
Hopefully, there's another book out there with more of what I'm looking for.
In all fairness, the book has an extensive resource guide to other books and even local doctors and support groups. It's just that I'm looking for quick orderly step by step answers, not a droning on and on and on discussion of problems and possibilities.
Emotional experience guaranteed.......2007-04-11
Couple of ADD doctors have written this book. If YOU have ADD/ADHD, you will love reading this book.
Writing style: Easy (4 out of 5), important for an ADD reader
Structure: Well structured (5 out of 5), important for an ADD reader
What's good 1: The authors have gone about on a random walk, and thrown in lots of related bits and pieces. I got to know of many related stuff (Dore Systems, True Hope, Beluga board, etc.) through this book. I'd give a 4 out of 5 for gathering together information that may not be available easily elsewhere.
What's good 2: The resilience the authors have demonstrated and their gung ho attitude, you'd come off thinking that ADD is a God given gift or something! I'd give another 4 out of 5 on this department. Hey, make it a 5 out of 5. I haven't felt this good about myself in a long while :-)
What's is (very) good 3: If you are an ADD or if your child/dear-one happens to be one, you will find going through many of the case studies in this book an emotonal experience. Yes, EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE. You can't escae thinking how much stress you had gone through and how much you've lost out because of ADD. It makes it so much worse (or better?) to know that ADD is so easily managed/treated! If you are not an insider you can't know what I am talking about.
By the way, if your ADD is not severe or does not come with other coexisting nasty issues, the biggest damage ADD can do for you is by confusing your base line. In other words, you will have a very had time to know smart you are or how dumb. This book is a nice place to start self-awareness and/or self-calibration.
Hey, if I can't give 5 starts to fellow club members, to who else can I ;-)

NEWLY REVISED AND UPDATED
The Out-of-Sync Child broke new ground by identifying Sensory Processing Disorder, a common but frequently misdiagnosed problem in which the central nervous system misinterprets messages from the senses. This newly revised edition features additional information from recent research on vision and hearing deficits, motor skill problems, nutrition and picky eaters, ADHA, autism, and other related disorders.

As a new grad OT, this book was a must read in learning about sensory processing disorders.
Comprehensive and Understandable.......2007-05-27
I found this book to be one of the most readable books out there on the topic (sensory processing disorder). Not only was it valuable to me as an occupational therapist but I can recommend it to parents whose children I work with. I know they will get the information without too much medical jargon and with helpful strategies and resources.
Very Informative.......2007-05-13
This book is a great resource for parents whose children are experiencing these sensory issues. It helps define the child's behavior and helps you begin to get a grip on and gain understanding of what you can do to help your child. I highly recommend it.

Great Resource for Parents and Teachers.......2007-05-29
The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun is a great resource for parents and teachers. As a teacher of special needs kids, I'm always looking for materials to share with parents, and this one is really meeting the need. Ms. Kranowitz knows her topic. Her ideas for simple, fun activities that teach are easy to follow. This is a book I will use over and over again.
review.......2007-05-13
This book is a must have to go along with The Out of Sync Child. It gives you some ideas on how to help your child be a kid despite having sensory issues. Good book for parents of autistic children.
Great Resource.......2007-05-12
We got this book right after our son was diagnosed with autism. It is the kind of book that you can constantly refer back to as your child progresses and learns new skills. Our child has really enjoyed participating in the activities. Also, the activities are interesting enough that our other son, who does not have autism, enjoys participating as well. This allows for some great peer interaction. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with a child with sensory integration issues. It is just great!
Very practical solutions.......2007-04-01
I have two children with autism and bookcases full of theory on what works best for them. None are as practical and hands on as this book. These are great ideas that don't reguire tons of extra planning and effort. They are fun and they really work. They are also great for ideas for autistic and neurotypical kids to praticipate in together. Most of these ideas would be fun for all kids not just children with sensory processing difficulties.
Just what we needed!!!.......2007-03-22
Having a son that has just been diagnosed with autism and feeling helpless, this book is just what we needed. This book helped me play wiith my son in ways that were so helpful to him. The book gave me ideas that made my own creative juices flow and I found myself wanting to make toys instead of purchasing them. And we all know that toys can get very expensive. I think it's a must for parents of autistic children.

Book Description
For children with sensory integration issues-those who have difficulty processing everyday sensations and exhibit unusual behaviors such as avoiding or seeking out touch, movement, sounds, and sights-this groundbreaking book is an invaluable resource. Long thought to affect only autistic children, or mistaken for ADHD, SI dysfunction is finally being recognized as a separate condition. Coauthored by a pediatric occupational therapist and a parent of a child with SI dysfunction, Raising a Sensory Smart Child is as warm and accessible as it is authoritative and detailed and is an indispensable guide for parents, therapists, and teachers who will turn to it again and again.
Customer Reviews:
Best book for SDI.......2007-06-19
Most books tell you what's wrong with your child. Well, most parents can write their own book in regards to that. This gives you tons of ideas of how to introduce tons of therapy to your child that's practical and fun. It's the best book for SI problems and solutions.
Excellent - Must Have !.......2007-04-10
My simple recommendation as a teacher of special education and parent of a special needs kid with ASD is BUY BUY BUY.
Quite simply if you have or teach any child with Special Needs, not just SI, buy this book.
The book is comprehensive with in depth theoretical knowledge plus plenty of strategies that are practical and easily implemented at home and / or school. Well referenced and researched contains chapters dealing with alternative therapies ...be warned these authors say some of them don't come up to scratch, based on research and I agree. This is the only book you will need in regards to OT and SI and you might save a lot of money designing your own programme.
A Parent Must Have.......2007-03-28
If your child has been diagnosed with SID or you are a teacher this book is a must have. It is well written and easy to read for parents and professionals. It gives excellent recommendations for a disorder that is very broad. As a former special education teacher I wish I would have read this information while I was still in the classroom. It is absolutely invaluable both in and out of the classroom!
What a great resource!.......2007-01-15
This book has a TON of information about Sensory Integration Dysfunction. There are tons of fun activities that are very easy to do and are fun for kids of all ages and abilities. There is also an excellent guide in the back of the book which gives websites for additional information and sensory equipment.
A New Toolbox.......2006-11-23
This book is packed with useful, applicable tips for helping a child with DSI or Sensory Processing issues cope with the world around them. Even the most knowledgable parent or professional can benefit from the wealth of suggestions and techniques to help a child adapt with an uncomfortable world.

Not what I expected. .......2007-03-08
I was expecting the full book, not a Cram101 book of highlights. I certainly didn't want to subscribe to another ($9.99)website to receive references of those highlights. I was so confused when I recieved it, I had to triple check the Amazon description, which made no mention of this cliff note edition. I was duped, but I am making the best of it. I just have to take extra notes in class and read between the lines. I do have to say that the book does have useful information. I hope to be more careful next time.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-05-13
This book helped to reinforce what I had already taught my 4-year-old son. He asked questions that he hadn't previously asked and opened up new discussion about the topic. It's well-written, common sense approach makes it easy for pre-schoolers to understand. The author is a therapist, which made me feel confident about the quality of the content.
We love this book........2007-05-12
My son and I read this book a couple of times a week. He even tells me now what he thinks is a "good touch" and a "bad touch". I recommend this to all parents!
Very informative and Easy to Understand for kids.......2007-01-05
I don't think it's an Easy subject for parents to talk to their kids about, So this book opened the subject up for me. It's hard to talk about, But an Absolute Must in the World Today. It talked about bad touch and Good touch like tickles, then the mom told her son a story about a little girl. The story was a Real Life possibility because it was a neighbor asking a little girl if she liked Kittens (what kid doesn't right?)then he asked her if she wanted to come see them at his house. The book states " since she knew this person she went with him" giving you the opening to explain it's not just strangers that can hurt you. The man wanted her to sit on his lap, then he tried to put his hand in her [...], she ran home and told her mom. Then the guy got in trouble. The mom telling the story to her son Then talks about it to him so he knows to tell her if something happens. Then they get into talk about what is Private on your body.... So here's on thing I wasn't Comfortable with.... The book has an illistration of the mom and son looking at a book, and their book has a picture of a little boy and girl naked so they can identify "private Parts". EASY FIX, My husband Took a Marker and Drew a pair of underwear on the little boy So it wouldn't be an issue. So you could just draw a bathing suit on the little girl, or underwear on the little boy If you're not ready for those pics if you have younger kids.
Overall the illistration are Great, not Scary, and just draw some underwear on the naked pic if you're uneasy about that. I would Buy this Book for any kid getting ready to Go to School or a Friends house.
Helping parents raise an awkward but important issue with their young children.......2006-09-13
In my experience, young children are profoundly intuitive. That is to say, they `know' some things by means other than personal experience or having been instructed or shown.
Their intuition is, ordinarily, most sensitive to their parents and, therefore, young children learn to know certain things without their ever being explicitly mentioned. This can be a problem. For example, children sometimes learn, by parental omission and/or avoidance, things that are NOT OK to talk about. Not infrequently, these subjects are the ones the parents, themselves, would have the most difficulty discussing with their children. With older kids (early teens) `sex' is the most famous of these issues. Mom says to Dad, "Have you had `the' talk with Johnny yet, dear?" Dad is concerned about their 13 year-old daughter Mary and asks mom, "Honey, have you had `the' talk with Mary yet?" Sex: awkward subject matter for many parents to address with children. I recall my own experience when at 12 or 13, my father sat me down and with a very straight and somber face, looked me in the eye and asked me, "Son, do you know where babies come from?" Having grown up on the streets of Boston, I said, "Sure!" My dad looked immediately relieved and said, simply, "Good.... Glad to hear it." That was the end of our `talk' and he never again broached the subject with me.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker Sandy Kleven's important book being reviewed here brings parents a tool that can be used to raise one of the most difficult aspects of sexual activity with young kids (3-7 years old) - that of sexual abuse.
Time have changed - or at least they seem to have. News stories about young children being inappropriately touched by adults are not as uncommon as they used to be. Is there more of it going on? Or, is the media simply reporting it more often. Reporting laws across the country usually mandate adults having professional contact with kids to report, in writing, any `suspicion' of sexual abuse to the appropriate public authority, most usually the local County's Children's Protective Services unit. Whether it is the prevalence of the activity that has increased or simply the open reporting of it when it does happen (most likely a combination of both) it remains one of the most difficult areas for parents to helpfully educate their children about. Part of the education is to do it in a way that conveys to the child that this is not only just OK to talk about if something should happen - but that the parents WANT them to tell them about it! That they will not get into trouble for telling.
Kids also need to learn that there are different kinds of touching. Some OK, and some not. This wonderfully illustrated (by Jody Bergsma) short (30 pages) book talks about that and related issues in a way that makes the reading to a child of it by a parent a natural, relaxed and nearly matter-of-fact activity: Not unlike reading a "Potty" book to child being readied to stop using diapers. The key value of this nicely and simply written book is that it encourages and invites talk between the child and parent if/when something questionable or untoward should occur in this area.
I have heard some parents contend that teaching about this should be the job of the schools. There are, in fact in many communities, school based programs dealing with Sexual Abuse - but I would contend that those activities need be secondary to a child's feeling of open permission to tell his/her own parent about having been wrongly treated or touched.
The language and visuals are entirely age appropriate for preschoolers and early primary grade children - and one reading of it with your own child will tell them that this is an OK think to talk about and will go a long way toward countering the power of the threats child abusers frequently make: Telling the children it is their secret and they mustn't ever tell anyone. This would be, in fact, the worse thing that could happen.
You and your child may never need this book - but exposing yourself and him/her to it together cannot help but reinforce the trusting nature that most children naturally have toward their parents - especially with information about something that just doesn't feel right.
Browse through a bookstore and read it - You will see what I mean. Buy it and use it - Your child and you, as a parent, will benefit from it.
This Book Has Just the Right Touch.......2005-03-24
An excellent, pro-active tool to help families empower themselves regarding child molestation. The text is gentle and direct and the illustrations are flowing and visually soothing. This book has the right touch of intelligence, compassion and clarity that is needed to discuss this very serious topic.
I like the way Jimmy's mother has night time chats with her son; she uses this time for roundtable discussions on what constitutes a "good touch" or a "bad touch" and that anything involving force, lying and sadness are all indicators of "bad touches." One important point this book includes is that bad touches are NOT always done by strangers. This is truly one of the best books on the subject and one that will certainly make for a more safety-savvy environment.
I recommend this book together with Cornelia Spelman's book, "Your Body Belongs to You," Linda Walvoord Girard's "My Body is Private" and Peter Alsop's gentle song, "My Body" on "Songs on Sex & Sexuality." These are invaluable works that are geared specifically for families.

Customer Reviews:
Homeschooling made easy.......2007-06-04
If you want to homeschool in the easiest style imaginable, this is the book for you.
Personally, I would urge a new homeschooling parent to read "Give Your Child a Superior Mind" and do a little research on Froebel's theories, but if you have minimal time to spend, this is THE book for you.
Key to the Future.......2007-04-14
I first read Hirsch's book in the mid 90s when I started my career as an educator. The insights and revelations his book yielded paid huge dividends for me. I have read the stories to my kindergarteners, used the math activities, and have profited from the advice on what constitutes a strong school. The beginning of the book should be read and reread by all educators and parents, for it provides some sobering reasons for why our nation's school system is in trouble. It also gives commonsense information on what we can do to make our schools stronger. E. D. Hirsch is the pioneer of the Core Curriculum, which I believe can save education in America. Please read this book, but more importantly use it!
Great Book!.......2007-01-03
This is a well-written, easy to read synopsis of our educational system in the U.S. The thrust of this series is to try and build consistency for all student throughout the U.S. and as such, this book outlines what a kindergarten curriculum should include. It is not meant to be exhaustive in itself, but a reference and starting point for both schools and homeschoolers. There are sections from all subjects, the illustrations are interesting to our kids (4 and 5) and they have enjoyed reading and learning directly from this book. If you're interested in education and want something to get started, this is a great tool.
Perfect for Grandmas.......2006-11-06
Just the thing for Grandma's house...all of the basics in a concise form. Plus you are reaching important global knowledge significant to a child's intellectual growth.
Helpful general resource.......2006-11-05
Though it runs the risk of serving everyone and so pleasing no one, this Core Knowledge kindergarten book really is helpful. I've used it as a "spine" to satisfy myself that I haven't left any gaping holes in my daughter's kindergarten education. It seems to have been written more for folks with kids in public school to fill in any gaps; I'm using it from a homeschooler's perspective. It has served its purpose. I don't plan to use the remaining Core Knowledge Series books because I want to pursue a classical education for my kids, but I would recommend this book to those who are as timid as I was starting out with homeschooling and who haven't yet settled on a specific curriculum or direction.
