Book Description

With the growing size of the elderly population comes an increased interest in aging as a subject of research and study. Human Aging: Biological Perspectives is written for the one-quarter or one-semester introductory level course and is aimed at students with little or no science background. The main structure of the text follows a body systems approach. In addition to the introductory chapter and a chapter covering molecules, cells, and the theories of aging, each body system is covered in its own chapter.

Rosenbloom and Morgan's Vision and Aging: With 32 contributing authors from numerous ocular subspecialities, this text is a very complete resource on caring for the elder population and is a necessary resource for all vision care specialists. While the text examines the normal age-related health issues in elder care, it also discusses in depth how to manage the specific ocular issues that are likely to present to your clinic. Each chapter is written by well known specialists in their respective fields, allowing the reader to obtain a hollistic and complete viewpoint from nutrition, polypharmacy, disease, contact lenses, spectacle correction, vision therapy to public health issues. It would be difficult to successfully practice optometry or ophthalmology without such a resource.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book on the subject.......2004-12-05

This is the third book I read published by the Harvard Medical School. They all have invariably been excellent. They rely on science, medical studies, and in depth analysis. They all do an excellent job of educating the public on the medical topics they cover. They differentiate between the marketing hype and established science.

The Aging Eye is an excellent reference book that outlines what happens to our eyes as they age since our mid thirties. This is a very short 200 page book with extremely large font. It definitely is made not to strain your eyesight. And, it reads easily in three leisurely hours.

In nine short chapters, it covers everything you need to know. The book explains in detail the three major diseases affecting us with the passage of time [glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataract]. It covers also many other common and less common eye ailments. It gives much information on prevention, treatment, surgery, post-surgery.

My favorite chapter was the last one on how to safeguard your eyesight. There it stresses the benefit of good living, including plenty of aerobic exercises to keep your cardiovascular system in top shape, and good nutrition based on an abundance of fresh produce (fruits and vegetables). It also stresses the necessity to protect one's eyes from sunlight including the dreaded UVAs and UVBs sunrays. Sunglasses need not cost a fortune, but they need to be excellent (very high % protection against UVs) and be worn virtually all the time when outdoors the minute the Sun is out.

My favorite pages are near the end where the book dispels many myths about eyesight. Many I must admit, I believed so far. But, it now makes sense to me that they were actual myths. One of them being that you can actually correct your eyesight with eye exercises. According to the book, you really can't. And, having tried the exercise routines to some degree, I really believe it now.

In any case, I strongly recommend this book. If you are interested in your general health and nutrition (extremely highly correlated to your eye health) I equally strongly recommend "Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy" by Walter Willett, and "The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health" by Harvey Simon.

5 out of 5 stars Moving, touching, inspiring book.......2005-12-12

First let me say that Patti and Ray Grose are close friends. My wife and I have known them for over twenty years and we can say that Patti has written openly and honestly about who she is and how caring for a relative with Alzheimer's has affected her life.

In this, her first book, she writes with the clarity and flow of an accomplished author. Her style is straightforward and clear. Her first-person account of being her mother-in-law's primary caregiver is compelling. It is a fast read and, surprisingly, a page-turner. I was moved by the openness and vulnerability that Patti displayed in her description of events. I was touched by the deep love and heartfelt care she showed her mother-in-law, especially during very difficult times. I was inspired by her determination to do everything possible to assure the health and well being of her husband's mother.

This book was an eye-opener. It was the first time I became aware of the level of difficulty that a family faces when dealing with a loved one who develops Alzheimer's. I found the book so helpful in understanding the toll that Alzheimer's takes on the patient's family. Patti even wrote out a list of helpful hints at the end of the book. On another level the book exposed me to the denial I experienced in not understanding what our good friends were going through, why they were not available for meetings, for social events.

In my opinion, this book is a must-read for any family or caregiver associated with an Alzheimer's patient. In her preface Patti is clear about her goal, "Hopefully, it will bring a message of understanding, hope and worthy advice to the reader." She accomplishes that mission.

When they got together in the late 1970s, Barbara Macdonald, a 60-something lesbian, and her lover, Cynthia Rich, who is 20 years younger, learned that old women and young women are treated very differently, even within the women's movement. In response to this inequity, Macdonald wrote essays and open letters to feminist and social service organizations comparing ageism to racism. Her autobiographical essays describe an amazing lesbian childhood lived before the publication of The Well of Loneliness, a college career threatened by the revelation of a love affair with a woman, and frustration with young women's patronizing older women. Rich's essays examine how words and visual images in popular and feminist texts contribute to demonizing and demeaning older women.

    Book Description

Still a breaking-through-the-barriers book after 22 years, this expanded edition of the classic begins with a tribute by Lise Weil, "In the Service of Truth: Remembering Barbara Macdonald." Barbara died at the age of 86 in June 2000. It also contains two talks Barbara gave, "Professionalism Is Not Benign" and "Old Women's Human Rights." An afterword by Cynthia Rich points to the impact Barbara made on the understanding of women and ageing and promises that she will continue to have a major impact on our lives.

"Barbara was the first to identify ageism as a central feminist issue...to point out that young women's alienation from old women, their dread of becoming them, their revulsion toward old women's bodies, is the direct result of society ('Your power as a younger woman is measured by the distance you can keep between you and older women')."--Lise Weil
