Book Description
This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls Anne Lamott's hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.
Customer Reviews:
deep and delicious and fun.......2007-06-29
This book is deep, delicious, and fun. It chronicles a woman's journey after her divorce. The divorce is not described in detail, but is clearly a protracted, difficult event. The author goes to Italy, where she learns Italian for the sheer joy of it, and eats as much gelato and other excellent food as she can. She goes on to India, where she meditates, though she had resisted this practice before and felt like she wasn't good at it. Then on to Indonesia, where she finds balance. This book is so well written. There are wonderful practices that the author undertakes (e.g., writing in a journal while very upset and then writing back to herself for comfort, having a ceremony alone in which she lets go of her former marriage and imagines herself being forgiven, and viewing Depression as a real life visitor who sneaks in but can also leave). Sometimes people find memoirs to be narcissistic or self-indulgent. This one is not. The author pokes fun at herself and is very real, human, and intensely likeable for all her imperfections. I recommend this book highly, what a pleasure to read.
I knew it!.......2007-06-29
I bought this book when it first came out and I knew it was going to be on the Best Seller's List! I should be a book critic! I loved this book and love this author.
A Bead Counted in Gratitude.......2007-06-28
As a guy, my mind simply would've never noticed this book for me to pick it up. The title and presentation, with exception to the prayer beads, simply don't call out to the masculine spirit. It took one of my beautiful friends of the feminine persuasion to place this book in my hands.
As a hitchhiker thru many lands, my wanderlust delighted and splashed in the puddles of scenic descriptions and friendly faces that fill this book. Many memories resurfaced, particularly in India, and future plans were altered to taste in a bit of the lovely author's experience.
As a holyman, I love watching myself and others be dragged, kicking and screaming, by our divine guidance to a more healthy, holy self. From the very introduction, I could feel the presence of the divine that had already entered this woman, and dug in for a good read that rarely let me down.
As a lover, who was once under a vow of celibacy, I could empathize with Elizabeth's pain in a place where passion and sex ruled, but know well the internal fortitude and strength this builds. The internal strife of this choice was one of my favorite aspects of her growth.
As a writer, had I only one sentence in which to sum up this book, I would state: "One woman's journey, out of breakdown back to wholeness, across Italy, India and Indonesia." Amazingly, this just happens to be a good part of what the title states, and it is obvious from the very start that her journey was more success than failure.
As a walking advertising campaign for everything I love, I have found that I can turn anyone onto this book simply by handing it to them with the words "pick a paragraph... any paragraph." I have yet to have anyone simply shrug off what they randomly read.
To Elizabeth Gilbert: "My love and gratitude for every word. See you later alligator."
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-06-28
Best book I've read in a long time. Actually used a highlighter in this one to mark particular groups of words that just resonated with me. A soulful, well-written book. I didn't want it to end.
Eat, Love, Pray: Every Woman's Search.......2007-06-27
I really enjoyed this book. The author made it so easy to share and understand the many phases a woman has in her life. I could relate to this woman and felt that she looked inside me and shared many thoughts and emotions that I have had.

Book Description
Yoga Nidra means "Yogic Sleep". It is a deep relaxation in which you leave the waking state, go past the dreaming state, and enter into the deep sleep state, while remaining fully awake and alert. This state of awareness is extremely beneficial, both for releasing stress, and for experiencing the joy of subtler spiritual explorations or experiences.
The voice will systematically guide you to explore your physical body, then move through 61 specific points within the body, and then practice ascending breath awareness along the body and spine. Your attention will be brought to the space between the eyebrows, then to the throat, and finally to the heart center, where you will go deep into stillness and silence, beyond the activities of the mind.
Following the custom of the ancient sages, the depth of Yoga Nidra comes from inner awareness of the levels of your own self, including your body, breath, and the subtler mind, rather than diverting attention throuh music or inner fantasies. This inner exploring through self-awareness is a more refined form of meditation that leads you deeper into the stillness and silence of your own being, while remaining fully awake and aware. The Yoga Nidra methods bring you to a place of awareness where you are able to completely let go of any words, thoughts, images, impressions, or pictures in the mind. You are guided to allow your mind to "empty, empty, empty" though you remain fully awake and clear of mind.
The practices on this CD will gently train your ability to direct your own attention, which is the primary skill in the art of meditation. You will find that you are gradually able to use these methods on your own, without the CD, and the benefits will be with you not only during your practice time, but also during the activities of daily life.
The Yoga Nidra CD has five tracks. The first track is an introduction (8:02 minutes), describing the state of Yoga Nidra and the practices on the CD. The next four tracks move through four sequential practices that are listened to together, so as to form a complete practice of 57:24 minutes (CD is 65:36 minutes in total). These four tracks can also be listened to individually, as complete practices unto themselves, which allows you to have the benefits of practice when less time is available.
After some time of practicing Yoga Nidra, you will naturally find it to be a most enjoyable and spiritually inspiring part of your life.

Good for stress.......2007-06-20
Giving in to this CD gives you a good hour of relaxation. And puts you into a relaxing deep, yet conscious sleep. I personally remember laying on my mat and starting, within what seemed like minute all I remebered was the voice telling me to awake. But when I looked at my clock an entire hour had passed.
serious and the best it can get.......2007-05-13
It is the most serious and deep material I have found so far. It is the real thing.May be not for everybody, because it is only for real searchers of the soul and mind!
I highly recommend it .
Yoga Nidra Meditation CD: Extreme Relaxation of Conscious Deep Sleep.......2007-05-08
The content was good, but the sound quality was bad. It sounded like a CD that was copied from an overplayed tape that lost the clarity of the original. One had to work hard at listening to get the benefit of the CD.
The item was delivered timely.
Great for sleeping! Not so great for Yoga Nidra........2007-05-05
This disc is very restful, very relaxing, and puts me to sleep quickly, which is nice since I am an insomniac. But Yoga Nidra is suppose to be a deep meditation where the mind remains concious. If you fall asleep you are defeating the prupose and will not get the full benifit of Yoga Nidra.
Still, it's nice to get a restful sleep, and so I use the technique on this disc when I go to bed to lull me to sleep. I pull out my Experience Yoga Nidra Disc to meditate
Finally something that actually works to help me sleep!.......2007-01-30
All my life i have had trouble sleeping. I've tried all kinds of things including all kinds of sleep pills. Nothing has worked better than this CD. WIth it i can fall asleep when i want, which has a huge impact on my life. Generally i'll be half way through it then konk out. I recommend this highly for anyone with sleep problems of any sort. I usually dont waste my time commenting on things i buy however this is the exception.

Customer Reviews:
BEST ASHTANGA YOGA BOOK OUT THERE.......2007-06-18
David was very conscious of making this book user friendly and he certaintly accomplished that goal. First of all there is the spiral bound spine, which is beautifully covered on the outside with stardard book cover, yet perfect for putting it flat on the floor during practice. The book has both the primary and intermediate series. Each pose comes jammed packed with modifications to meet varing degrees of flexiblity.
There are explanations about Ashtanga Yoga and practice as well as some of the philosphy beyond this traditional. This book is primary for the practice of asana so much more than getting into mediation or chakra or chanting, for that I suggest you pick up Power Yoga by Berly Bender Birch. The photographs are in black & white obviously to keep production costs down, but no matter its beautifully done and truly inspiring.
Hats off to Swenson and his team for putting much thought into the creation and execution of this book,
Awsome Book! Must Have!!!!.......2007-05-11
This book is awsome for any level of yogi. The pictures are good for visuals in the postures. This is a must have for teacher and students alike.
A practical and comprehensive manual.......2007-02-14
I bought this book when I read an article in a Melbourne newspaper from Antonia Kidman who swore by this manual. I have a few other Yoga books, both good, but this bound, hardcover manual is very practical as attested to by other reviewers.
I only dropped a point due to the fact (and other Yoga books I have seen don't seem to emphasize this either) that the reader does not really gain an insight into how long it should take them to be able to realize these poses. Many of the poses, even in the Primary Series could take the average person years of practise to perfect. We all know Yoga is a lifetime journey but one tends to feel a little incompetent when after practising for some time that they are still struggling with what would be elementary poses for many Yogi's.
That said, take your time and perhaps concentrate on the Sun Salutations and the 30 and 45 minutes sequences to begin with and as you progress and become more flexible you can begin to concentrate on the more advanced asana's. This book should last you for a long time.
Excerpt does no justice.......2007-02-08
This is a great book for beginner to advanced. It was recommended to me by my Ashtanga Yoga instructor. It shows tons of poses and modifications for those of us who are, shall we say, less flexible. If you look inside and are disappointed don't use that to judge this book. It is phenomenol!!
Great resource for Ashtanga Yoga practitioners.......2007-01-09
David's book was wonderfully designed for those perfecting their practice of Ashtanga Yoga. Postures and breathing are well described and illustrated. The series reference in the back is great as well as abbreviated practice series if you want to get a quick session in and don't have 1.5+ hours to devote at the time.

Customer Reviews:
If you only read one book about yoga in your life........2007-06-19
This book is very complete, and yet doesn't focus on the extreme aspects that make so many people think that they 'can't do yoga'. You -can- do yoga, without being a "circus performer", (as is mentioned in the book). As there is no unecessary physical extreme here, there is also no judgement of motive: You want to do yoga / you have your reasons / yoga is good / any motives to do yoga are good motives. Teaching by good example, rather than rules; inspirational.
Cosmic joke.......2007-03-03
If you paid $80 for this book, somewhere in India a stout little man in orange is laughing all the way to the bank.
Don't be intimidated.......2006-12-06
This is an imposing volume for sure, the great length and expense of the book may lead some people to try something else. I encourage you to go ahead and try this one if you have any inclination to do so. It starts you out gently, the first chapter contains some exercises to increase the flexibility in ankles, hips, and knees, and the only meditative pose given is shavasana or corpse pose, which is just laying on your back on the floor. You can handle that. The method given of moving from boat pose into corpse pose for relaxation is fantastic. Everything is explained thoroughly and aimed at a complete novice, though the explanatory text is rewarding even for those already versed in yoga practices.
The course also provides some bodily cleansing methods which may freak you out a little bit. Right off the bat they give you Jala Neti which requires you to pour salt water into one nostril and have it flow out the other one. This feels odd at first but you get used to it and even start to crave it after a few days.
You spend as long as it takes to fully assimilate each chapter before moving on to the next. Fantastic progress can be made in an hour a day, though it looks like as you reach the more advanced teachings that time will increase.
So don't be intimidated, begin this journey.
An incredibly clear and concise path to self-realization.......2006-04-17
There are a couple reviews here that do a great job of briefly explaining this book's amazing and unbelievably detailed contents so I won't head down that path. I will say that this is the path of yoga for the spiritually-inclined. Asanas are definitely part of the course, but in contrast to most other styles, a large amount of your time is spent in breath work and meditation which is not surprising given that Raja yoga (regarded as the most meditation-intensive supreme path of yoga) is a large part of Saytananda yoga. In fact, the more you progress, you realize that the asanas/postures are really just preparing you for meditation (kind of like stretching before running a marathon)
After practicing the first 7 lessons (7 months) of the book at home I decided to get serious about Satyananda Yoga and started looking for a teacher. As it turns out, there are only 4 fully accredited Satyananda teachers in North America (yes you read that correctly!) as it takes 3 to 5 years of intensive study to achieve that designation (as opposed to about 1 month to get a basic 200-hour yoga certificate elsewhere) and they have only started training Satyananda teachers in North America about 5 years ago. As all 4 of the teachers are in Cleveland Ohio, I took a flight out there to start my journey down this amazing path and hope to join the ranks of Satyananda teachers in a few years.
If you are a serious and disciplined aspirant and are interested in the practice of yoga for rapid spiritual evolution (as opposed to simply for health and fitness), then this is the path for YOU.
Hari Om Tat Sat,
Dave
Comprehensive textbook on kriya yoga.......2006-02-03
This is a great book for people who are serious enough to start a daily yoga practice but for whom it is not feasible to go on an extended pilgrimage to an ashram or other yoga retreat. It does require a long-term commitment of regular practice and is not ideal for people who are absolute beginners or just dabbling.
The course within this book outlines the essentials of the entire yoga lifestyle and therefore includes information not only on yoga postures, but also on some of the esoteric practices including yogic breathing, cleansing, diet, philosophy, and chakra meditations. However, it is one specific system (or path) to yoga and should not be mixed with other systems i.e. if you choose this path, stick to this one alone.

Book Description
Anatomy of Hatha Yoga is the only modern authoritative source that correlates the study of hatha yoga with anatomy and physiology. Hatha yoga is comprised of stretching, strengthening and breathing exercises in upright, lying down and inverted postures. Yoga teachers and students, personal trainers, medical therapists, or anyone who is curious or troubled about how the body responds to stretching and exercise will find in this book a cornucopia -- partly new and partly old -- of readable and reliable information. It was written and edited to meet the needs of a general audience largely unschooled in the biomechanical sciences, and yet to attract and challenge the interests of the medical profession. This book features 230 black and white photographs and more than 120 diagrams and anatomical illustrations.
Chapter 1 summarizes general principles of anatomy and physiology as applied to hatha yoga. Breathing is next in chapter 2 because yogic breathing expedites movement and posture. Breathing is followed by pelvic and abdominal exercises in chapter 3 because the pelvis and abdomen form the foundation of the body. Standing postures will then be covered in chapter 4 because these poses are so important for beginning students, and because they provide a preview of backbending, forward bending, and twisting postures, which are covered in detail in chapters 5, 6, and 7. The headstand and shoulderstand, including an introduction to cardiovascular function, are presented in chapters 8 and 9. Postures for relaxation and meditation are treated last in chapter 10.
WINNER, 2002 Benjamin Franklin Award for Health Wellness, and Nutrition - Publishers Marketing Association.

(Note To Christians) Hatha Yoga.......2007-06-11
(Note To Christians) Hatha Yoga: In Hinduism there are many different forms of "Yoga" which are paths of practice and Hatha Yoga is one of many that leads the aspirant to the ultimate goal of union with divinity (gods) and the unity of all of Creation.
Many erroneously believe they can practice yoga postures, breathing, and focusing techniques devoid of yoga's spirituality, not realizing that yoga is an inherent part of Hindu philosophy which teaches man and nature are one with divinity.
Today, yoga is experiencing a worldwide renaissance and in America has more than 70,000 yoga teachers working in 20,000 locations. Although viewed primarily as fitness instructors, *these trainers are in reality the leading missionaries of eastern religion* in the west. The twenty-seven billion dollar a year yoga industry is marketed to Christians, students, athletes, businessmen, pregnant women and senior citizens promising solutions for stress reduction, concentration problems, and issues of self confidence.
Hatha Yoga is in reality a pagan import from the East, yoga has now become mainstream in the church through "Christ-centered yoga classes" designed to help improve spirituality and experience "the presence of God". But PLEASE BEWARE as yoga's mysticism is NOT compatible with historic Christianity no matter how it is packaged! Rev. James R. Hanratty
a must have .......2007-05-22
This is a great book. It explains the anatomy and physiology of yoga postures very clear terms. It is a valuable asset for all levels of yoga practitioners.
A Great Help.......2007-05-12
As an aging and serious beginner, I came to Yoga with a bag full of recurring injuries and thus fear.
This book helps me understand why I get this or that "pull" or "tear." The book is probably most suitable for teachers and advanced students because of it's detail, but if you're like me and want to understand your anantomy on your way to enjoying the ethereal benefits of Yoga, you would probably enjoy having this book for reference.
I've loaned it out twice already to friends who have had nagging injuries.
Bob Rogers
Excellent Book!.......2007-05-06
I recommend this book to any person who want to know more about Hatha Yoga in a deeply way.
Living anatomy.......2007-03-25
To really understand the function of body, we need teorethical knowledge and own experience through practice. This book deepens this understanding since it connect deep knowledge of human body and experience. It is alive. I recommend it strongly to all doctors, medicin students, yoga teachers, yoga practisioners, phisio terapeuts, sports pedagogs, etc.

Comprehensive Classic.......2007-02-09
APMB is the most complete text on foundational yogic studies I have come across. At the price you cannot find a better deal in yoga texts.
Perfect? Just about........2007-01-25
I wrote a review of Light on Yoga, and talked about how if you could have only one text on hatha . . . Now, having seen this work, I must honestly revise that opinion. Both this and the much better-known Light are first-rate books on hatha (physical) yoga. This book, however, is quite user-friendly and much more informative about the effects of each asana. It contains information about the chakras most directly affected by the asanas, and--importantly--it discusses the counterposes that are most effective for each asana described. This last point is vital if you want to work toward structuring a practice without a class.
This book does not contain nearly as many poses as Light. And the poses are illustrated by drawings, not photos. But the drawings are wonderfully clear.
Like the title says, the book gives comprehensive insight into asana, pranayama, mudras and bandhas. It leads the reader through a complete course and progression from beginner to advanced. Advanced practitioners, though, can jump in anywhere and benefit from the book's insights, which are profound.
For anyone serious about learning yoga or deepening one's practice, this is an essential text. A wonderful complement to Light, and a stand-alone compendium that is sure to reward the reader, regardless of experience.
Highly recommended.......2007-01-05
Don't let the title fool you, this is an excellent book on what is understood in the West to be Yoga.
The gem is really in the Beginner's Group. It is deceptively easy and yet the benefits are vast. If you have never done Yoga before, then the Beginner's Group is for you. You can't injure yourself doing it, and I suggest that (for beginners) you do ONLY the Beginner's Group for a whole year, and then move on to other parts.
I have read many Yoga books, and this book is now my menu of Yoga poses.
It is important to read the text very carefully and, if you are a beginner, to follow it exactly.
The best no-nonsense yoga textbook.......2005-11-08
There are innumerable books on yoga to be found; some emphasising the practical aspects with postures (asana), complete with colour photos - and some impossibly esoteric, meant for the select few with mystical leanings. This book combines a comprehensive overview of asana; while at the same time giving clear explanations of the deeper aspects of yoga, including breathing (pranayama), body attitudes (mudra), energy locks (bandha), energy centres (cakra), and yogic cleansing (hatha yoga).
The roots of yoga are in the ancient vedic and tantric texts; many of which have remained inaccessible to western readers until the last century. Much of the teachings were kept secret; firstly, because they had been banned by a Hindu priesthood that felt threatened by anarchic schools of self-liberation; and secondly, for fear that the powerful techniques could be misused by misguided opportunists.
Swami Satyananda Saraswati was one of the renegades who shocked the yogic establishment by not only translating the texts and teaching the techniques to western students; but then went on to publish an entire series of books, clarifying and promoting yoga in an unprecedented way.
Satyananda's other significant move was to bring yoga into the domain of medical science, and explain esoteric techniques in terms of western anatomy and physiology. He started the Bihar Yoga Bharati, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate studies in subjects like Yoga Psychology and Applied Yoga Science; and initiated the Yoga Research Foundation which studies the medical effects of yoga.
Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha (APMB) is a required text for any serious yoga aspirant. It not only clears away the mysticism around yoga left behind by the early Theosophists, and revived by the New-Ageists; but gives a sound theoretical foundation enabling one to understand the underlying purpose and efficient practice of yoga techniques.
The clarity of the illustrations and the wealth of information will ensure many years of delving into this classic reference work.
clear, helpful, and complete.......2005-08-13
The illustrations are clear for each pose. The explanations of the asanas and other practices are very helpful, and the over all presentation of the Bihar yoga discipline seems complete. Recommend.

great reference guide with amazing illustrations.......2007-05-21
I thought this was the best anatomical reference book I have seen.
The key muscles of hatha yoga.......2007-05-13
This is a very in depth book on the muscles used in various hatha yoga poses. It is a must for your yoga library.
Nice But I expected More.......2007-01-06
This is a nice book but not a good buy at about $50! Nice pictures that you might look at again sometime in the future but not much info if you want a reference for Yoga.
What is needed in the Yoga community is a book like "Strength Training Anatomy" By Frederic Delavier.( at about $15 this is THE BOOK to have in your collection!!) Detailing Yoga asanas that work the various muscle groups.
A must-have for every Yoga instructor in order to teach Yoga safely.......2006-11-12
I was looking for just such a book, because I felt that unless we (instructors) have a very good idea about all the anatomical parts that get affected by various yoga asanas, we would not be providing mindful instruction. The book provides fantastic illustrations that explain themselves without the need for too many words. I feel that viewing the bare bones structure of the body in this manner makes me visualize the movement of a particular asana much better than if I were given a verbose description of it. So once again, much thanks to Dr. Long and Chris Macivor for an excellent work of art and science.
Great expectations.......2006-11-04
As a future teacher of yoga I found idea of such book absolutely incredible. I even had in mind of writing something like that myself. Models are great in this book. But, I wish it is organized more differently, in a way that each asana shows muscle involvement regarding to its intensity and role (agonist, antagonist, isometric support, and so on). That way I would find the book extremely useful, as it would help me target my exercises with greater efficiency.

Book Description
Leave your assumptions—and your excuses—at the door. Bikram Choudhury, the world's foremost authority on Hot Yoga, is here to show you the true way to self-improvement and a new love of life. Based on a centuries-old and scientifically proven pathway to health, Bikram Yoga will whip your body, mind, and spirit into shape.
Based on Bikram's signature program of 26 postures and two breathing exercises, this book will help you combat a variety of afflictions—from stress and insomnia to arthritis and back pain—and maintain exceptional health for years to come. The various postures work your muscles, increase flexibility, and flush toxins out of your system—a completely natural, full-body workout without the unhealthy stresses and dangers of a gym. It isn't easy: It's a rigorous, body-bending program, and Bikram gives it to you straight in his outspoken, charismatic, and tough-love fashion. But just like the hundreds of thousands of students who go to his studios across the country, you'll end up sweaty and exhausted but keep coming back for more.
Additionally, Bikram Yoga can help you do much more than drop inches from your belly. Bikram explains how practicing yoga is also a mental and spiritual mission that can help you create a path to true happiness. When it comes to love and marriage, realizing your full potential, or living a life in perfect balance, Bikram's yogic philosophy shows you how physical strength and flexibility can be a gateway to mental clarity and spiritual calm.
If you've never tried Bikram's yoga, get ready for the deepest, most beneficial class of your life. And if you're an old hand at it, your understanding of the postures and the sequence will increase exponentially, as will your results.
So are you ready to achieve lasting health and happiness? The time has come for Bikram Yoga. Grab your mat and get ready to change your life.

Bikram's recipe for heath.......2007-05-24
Bikram Choudhury is certainly a controversial character and this book does well to shore up his fan base. Somewhat ghostwritten (or at least heavily edited), the book is an easy read and stands as an excellent introduction to his specific yoga discipline. It describes how he came about formulating his practice, distilling 84 postures originally taught him into the 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises that today make up his 90 minute classes. The book helped me to understand the specific goals and benefits of each posture as well as the common mistakes to look for. More importantly it helps to understand the underlying goal of yoga as vehicle to spiritual awakening and the fulfillment of one's life work. As far as getting a bead on Bikram the person and his attempts to trademark his sequence, I suggest reading the 2005 Mother Jones article on him as well as watching the 60 Minutes piece - both available via a Google search or Wikipedia lookup. As a former Jr. Olympic athlete, Bikram Yoga is still the most challenging thing I have ever attempted and has certainly has changed my life for the better. I hope this book helps others to embrace it's beauty.
Best yoga book.......2007-05-13
I love this book. I think it is much better than Bikram's previous book. The section on how to do the poses is not cluttered with chit-chat, but gets straight to the heart of the issue. EAch pose has a paragraph called "Bikram's tips" that really have helped me to do the poses better.
I found the sections about Bikram's history and how he became a yoga teacher interesting and inspiring. Bikram makes a lot of claims about the benefits of his yoga and how it is better for you than other styles of yoga, and at first I was very skeptical. I thought this was just marketing. But after practicing for two years and going to a Bikram yoga studio for a while, I have found that most of his claims turn out to be true. Doing his sequence faithfully and regularly, every day, really does heal the body AND the mind. Bikram yoga has healed several injuries that I had, and it makes living in a stressful environment less crazy-making.
Practicing in a hot room is great, if you can. But I find the sequence to be beneficial even if you can't get to a hot yoga studio or heat your own home up to 100 degrees. I just wear a fleece jacket if it is cool and go slowly.
Like most sequels . . ........2007-05-09
This is not as useful as Bikram's first book, which goes through all the poses, the breathing, etc. What this book offers is more lore about the poses and about Bikram. If you are a Bikram yoga aficionado, by all means get this book. If not, the first one will do if you're curious about the sequence of poses, the breathing, and the philosophy.
Caveat: Bikram asserts that his style of yoga is the only authentic yoga being taught in the west. A casual look at teachers like Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, Desikachar, Swami Sivananda, etc. and, perhaps more importantly, their students, calls Bikram's assertion into question. Also keep in mind that he has tried to patent and copyright his poses and threatened to sue teachers who tried to teach his sequence without his permission. (See The New York Times, 5-7-07 pg. A21 ("A Big Stretch")).
The notion of claiming yoga as one's property, or of asserting that all other styles are spurious, is inconsistent with the fundamental principles of yoga.
So--take Bikram with a grain of salt. He's a good practitioner. His teaching can be beneficial. He's also a fairly ruthless businessman and self-promoter, and some of what he says is colored by self-interest.
Bottom line: Bikram's yoga is worth checking out. Take a class. If you like it, get his first book. Or get the first book and try the poses. Keep what works, and view the spiel with the skepticism it warrants.
For Philosophy only -NOT for use for Practice.......2007-04-14
This book is incredibly readable. Bikram is funny and witty and wants to impart to you some of the philosophy behind your practice of Yoga, off your mat. I can go with that.
But the practice part of the book is incorrect. My teachers were surprised at the inaccuracies and have ceased recommending the book to our class. They are going to find out from the source why poses are shown incorrectly and held for incorrect times.
So read the book to find out Bikram's idea of how to live your Yoga off the mat, but use his other Bikram's Beginning Yoga book for your practice.
Hot and Spicy.......2007-04-05
This book is incredibly readable and fun. Bikram's breezy tone and brash opinions grab your eyes and hold your brain, whether or not you think you have any interest in yoga. Actually this book seems particularly geared to non-practitioners.
The earlier chapters give historical background on yoga and Bikram's autobiography. The yoga history is highly slanted to Bikram's narrow view. Hey it is his book (and he won't let you forget that, believe me) - he can analyze the murky and heavily disputed history of yoga entirely as he pleases. The autobiographical material is very interesting, both for light on Bikram himself and also his excellent multi-cultural contextual scene-painting. We are learning about India as we go. And we are seeing our own culture strangely refracted, through Bikram's very perceptive lens. He has a sharp tongue though.
His basic message is that American culture is great in some ways but that individual Americans are mostly unhappy and messed up, mentally and physically. Fortunately there is a one-size-fits-all cure, a true panacea - Bikram Yoga.
Things Bikram Dislikes:
Tatoos
Exercise (running, tennis, aerobics, weights, team sports, ... fill-in-the-blank!)
Other styles and schools of yoga
Drugs - medical and recreational
Western medicine in general
Actually it is strange that he dumps on weight training, because he points out pridefully in another section that his own beloved guru was some kind of weight champion and pioneering promoter of the practice. Whatever.
He trashes the popular Iyengar style of yoga by sneering at the many mechanical props they use to control or achieve difficult postures. At least Iyengar came in for one full paragraph of dumping, while the extremely influential Ashtanga style is dissed off in less than one sentence as "'never existed in India" (which is a very odd claim, as the 91-year-old meta-guru of Ashtanga, Sri Patabhi Jois, has lived in Mysore, India his entire life and he learned starting as a young teenager from his own guru right there.) It is also odd that Bikram makes a big deal of his historical claim that there are exactly 84 asanas or postures in traditional yoga. Other respected analysts have come up with 608 or other numbers. Anyway, Bikram made his own sequence by choosing the best 26 out of his classical 84.
Bikram's sequence is much shorter than Ashtanga's Primary Series (not to mention the follow-on 5 additional Ashtanga series), and in practice it is simpler than Iyengar's posture perfectionism and mechanical molding. So in that sense, it is a good practice for modern conditions (he does teach his full set of 84 postures, to advanced students only).
His insistence that only his way is the "right way" to do Yoga reminds me of great Chinese masters of Tai Chi and Qi Gong (traditional breathing and stretching practices for energy cultivation). They ALL insist, just like Bikram, that only THEIR personal way is the universal right way. Almost every one of them has this same kind of ego. And every single one of them has students who would swear any oath that this one method is what cured them or enlightened them or conferred whatever benefit. Probably they are all right, in a sense.
Bikram goes on and on and on about how TOUGH his sequence is, about how, the very arduous postures combined with long hold times combined with the high heat turns the classroom into a Torture Chamber and so forth. But in fact his asana's are not noticeably more physically or psychically challenging than (for example) the Ashtanga Primary Series, in many cases far less so. And in Iyengar and Ashtanga yoga, asanas are held for extended periods.
He explains the famous high heat practice room on just a few pages, saying basically (a) it is done to re-create Indian conditions; and (b) it helps loosen up the body. That's probably fine, but various forms of yoga are traditionally done in Tibet and other cold regions - the high heat is not a fundamental requirement from their point of view. Maybe it does help some people loosen up more quickly.
A few quibbles:
- Only one photo per asana is provided, often at an angle that is very unrevealing and unusable for a beginner student's reference. For example, the photo for Posture #10 (Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose) is at a head-on angle that obscures most of the body. Bikram does say you need to come to the school to learn, so maybe that is done purposely. Anyway, if you want to try the postures you'll need another book on Bikram to get anywhere.
- The descriptive text that accompanies each asana's photo is often not well synched with the single photo. For example, the text for Posture #12 Toe Stand says hold your hands in prayer position (except when steadying yourself for balance on the floor) but the model's hands in the photo are neither in prayer nor steadying position.
Anyway. I really like his spicy writing, and his enthusiastic attitude. And the most wonderful feature of the book is the constant interplay and dialog that he sustains between India and America, East and West - all his teaching is contextualized and you'll end up learning a tremendous lot about India and also (if American) about yourself, all in one nice package.
As for the specifics of Bikram practice, I'm sure it is no less beneficial to its adherents (and readers of this books reviews will eventually have a chance to read comments from many of them, I'm very sure) than all the other zillions of types of yoga, qi gong, tai chi, therapeutic dance, cross conditioning, and so on that decorate our spiritual supermarket. I don't think there's any one pure truth in this realm. Probably any therapeutic or spiritualized exercise that you are attracted to will work well enough - for you. And the highest spiritual masters of India, such as Ramana Maharishi, have stated that all spiritual practices are merely needless distractions and hamster-wheel spinning - as there is nowhere to go, and no goal to be realized.
I can only wonder if some version of Gibbon's comment on the Roman Empire's religions might apply:
"The various modes of worship, which prevailed in the Roman world, were all considered by the people, as equally true; by the philosopher, as equally false; and by the magistrate, as equally useful."

Customer Reviews:
Very clear, precise and useful instruction.......2007-06-11
There's nothing new under the sun. The teachings contained in this book have been given in the past by numerous teachers (Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj, the Secret of the Golden Flower, maybe even Meister Eckhart.)
However, what make a whole lot of difference is the way it is presented. I found the author's instructions very clear and illuminating. They helped me understand many things that were previously unclear.
I whole-heartedly recommend it.
Most Disappointing.......2007-06-02
This is a simple book on meditation for Self-Realization. First, the book is VERY short, maybe 20,000 words. Most pages have less than 100 words on them in big type to create the 272 pages printed. The writing style is very plain. On top of the that the author is very repetitive, to the point of exasperation. The author states that it took him 27 years to realize that meditation is "awareness watching awareness". Either he did not practice much or did not study many different systems of meditation, or he would have realized that much sooner. The entire jist of the book is that meditation is awareness watching awareness, which almost all systems of meditaton teach in one form or another. (He appears to have limited himself to Hinduistic schools, particularly Ramana Maharshi.) Beginners in meditation will not be able to follow the advice in this book, because they will not be able to meditate 2 hours a day, and most will not be able to hold their awareness on awareness when just starting out. Beginners need to start with less time and a cognitive centering device (such as a mantra). I suspect that the overly positive comments in other comments here have been planted by the author's students. I am not saying that what the author says is bad or wrong: meditation is indeed "no-thought awareness being aware of itself". I just don't think he he adds anything new to the field of meditation and spiritual illumination. Practice both in sitted, concentrated meditation; and while going about your day "awareness aware of awareness and staying out of thought" and you have the point of this book -- and just about every other system (Budhism, Taoism, Gurdjieff, Zen, etc.)
It has been said before and better.......2007-05-25
In my opinion it seems as Michael Langford has something really important to say but not the writing skills or verbal tools (perhaps language itself is too restrictive) to convey what it is to the reader in the way that Nisargadatta or Jean Klein are so skillful at.
The book is highly repetitive as if saying the same thing 150+ times a little differently will help you get it. It looks more like a type of rapid fire self hypnosis. If you want enlightenment through suggestion you can read Arjuna Nick Ardagh.
Langford is referring to awareness without object. What is referred to as contemplation (Brunton's 3rd stage of practice). As for the origin of "Awareness of Awareness" here is an old quote from Paul Brunton in his notebooks:
"In that stillness, far from the physical activities, emotional excitations, and mental changes of everyday life, "the awareness of awareness" becomes possible, the Mind itself is isolated. The real being of a man is at last discovered and exhibited." - Notebooks of Paul Brunton: Advanced Contemplation.
We are all allured by the promise of the short path. Reading Brunton's book will give you a very good reference on the short vs. long path and why the ego wants shortcuts. Why also we must have both paths and realization is only an end result of the short path and how one cannot enter the short path until the long path work has been done.
Brunton's book "Notebooks of Paul Brunton: The Ego, Vol. 6" is an excellent book to accompany "Advanced Contemplation"
More direct than usual.......2007-04-08
This little book tries to bypass poetry and offer a practical, step-by-step program for realizing the identity of subject and object. The author even goes so far as to provide his basic instruction worded 26 different ways, in the hope that one of the wordings will resonate with you.
The author makes some rather bold claims that will challenge many readers. He categorically denies the need for any sort of teacher. He also dismisses thousands of years of spiritual advice in all traditions as either insufficient or useless. Neither of these provocative claims is really relevant to the technique he is presenting. The book would be better without them.
And what is Langford's technique? The Chinese classic "Secret of the Golden Flower" calls it Turning the Light Around. But I've never seen it presented as forcefully or as urgently as this.
Recommended if you find your practice lapsing, and need your hair set on fire.
Instruction manual for enlightenment!.......2006-12-10
From the Introduction chapter of the book...
"11.It is possible to be free of all sorrow and suffering
and to experience
absolutely perfect infinite eternal joy
here and now in this lifetime.
12.It is possible for all humans,
not just a few humans.
13.There is a rapid means to
infinite bliss.
14. That rapid means is taught in this book."
This book is unique contribution. It is an 'Instruction manual for enligtenment'. It contains extremely practical step by step instruction to the 'direct experience of reality'. The first three chapters are devoted to understanding the ego and tricks of the ego and how it keeps one from waking up. These chapters are extremely insightful and I personally found it very useful. One of the several ego's tricks which I Identified in myself after reading the book was a preference to engage in endless reading and discussion instead of devoting time for actual practise. Then there is a chapter on the importance of the 'desire for liberation' and how it can dissolve all obstacles to enlightenment. There is a chapter devoted to 'how to awaken the extreme desire for liberation' which is also very insightful. There are two meditation practises offered for daily practise as the 'most rapid and direct means to direct experience of reality'. The first one is the 'Awareness Watching Awareness'(AWA) method, and the second one is the 'Abandon Release Method' (ARM). According to the author AWA is the most rapid and ARM is the second most rapid method. These two methods alone are worth the value of the book. There is an extremely useful chapter on further clarification on 'Awareness watching awareness' method which addresses all possible doubts or questions one might have during the practise. The author gives very practical tips and pointers to address any questions which might cloud the meditator's mind during practise.
E.G. from chapter eight...
"10. Don't expect any type of experience.
11. If you are wondering if you will have some kind of spiritual experience,
then that very wondering means
you have added something to
awareness watching awareness.
12.Never add anything to
awareness watching awareness.
13. The key is to be content just watching your awareness and not to move from that and not to add anything to that.
.
.
165. Don't expect any of the experiences described in this chapter. Expectation will destroy the effectiveness of the practice.
166. If it seems boring
the first few times you try the
awareness watching awareness practice, that is OK. Continue to practice."
Initially when I started practising AWA, I found it to be quite difficult. Then I took the authors suggestion in the book and practised ARM first for a few months and then swith to ARM. It has been a year since I started practising seriously and the results are amazing, I can definitely say that I am on the right track. The following quotes are from chapter 6.
"67. From the very first moment one tries this practice, one is abiding as awareness!
68. There is no waiting!
69. It is so easy.
70. One does not mean to imply
that from the beginning the ego ends.
71. It takes years of continuous practice before the ego meets its final end.
72. However, from the moment one tries this simple, easy to understand practice, one is abiding as awareness!""
There are also several supplementary methods which are not meant for daily pracise but can be pracised once or twise to get a deeper understanding of the primary method. There is also a chapter titled 'reminder' which is meant to be read everyday to motivate one to practise the methods every day.
Well how does one know whether this is infact the 'most rapid and direct means to liberation'? Quoting the author from chapter 6.
"123. The only way to find out if the Awareness Watching Awareness Method works for you is to practice it.
124. If without trying it, you come to the conclusion that it will not work, then you have allowed the imposter (thinking)
to rob you of a great opportunity
125. With thinking you have a conclusion, an opinion, an assumption
that may be correct or may not be correct.
126. However, with practice, you will know for sure if it works for you or not.
127. Therefore, consider giving it
a sincere, fair try."
In my case, the unconditional joy and bliss that is starting to fill my being and is deepening with each practise session is enough confirmation that the AWA method really works.
Very Highly Recommended!

Book Description
The Five Tibetans is a yogic system of highly energizing postures and exercises that originated in the Himalayas. Liberating and enhancing the innate energetic power of the human body and mind, these five exercises take a minimum of daily time and effort but offer remarkable results in the way of increased physical strength and suppleness as well as mental acuity. In addition, these exercises can be a vehicle for enlivening the senses and generating and harnessing energy for the purpose of self-transformation.
Regular practice of these postures:
Relieves muscular tension and nervous stress
Improves respiration and digestion
Benefits the cardiovascular system
Leads to deep relaxation and well-being
Tunes and energizes the chakras
The Five Tibetans are explained within the context of traditional yoga, providing a foundation for understanding.
Black-and-white photographs and illustrations complement the text and clearly indicate the proper execution of each exercise.

Yoga.......2007-05-26
Suggested by my Yoga teacher........great easy way to practice whether you're home or away.
Really good companion!.......2006-12-06
When I first bought this book a few years ago I tried it but after a few days lost interest. Later that year I found it again between other books I kept in a box and decided to try it again. And yes, it works!
It is not a long book, and it will take you maybe one or two days to read it. That being said, I think that it is a great source for those (like me) that like a quick dose of yoga, whether because of time or whatever reason.
The exercises within are great, and you can do them wherever you want without the need for a mat or blanket.
Ideal for traveling.
expect miracles.......2006-11-03
While recovering from a traumatic bicycling injury, I read Mr. Kilham's book and started out slowly.
I regularly increased my duration and am now incorporating The Five Tibetans into my daily life.
The exercises have opened up healing and strength channels I did not know existed. My recovery time was cut in half.
The book took all of one afternoon to read and understand, but the benefits will last a lifetime.
Pretty good!.......2006-05-12
I've been doing the exercises comprised in this book for the past few years -indeed they are good, indeed they work, but as with everything that regards the human body you can't expect them to work without you putting a bit of effort... I haven't been able to find such book yet, a book that can change your life or your health or the way in which you look at your own life by just reading it. Everything requires an effort.
If you are commited and decide to try these exercises go ahead, for they will work. They comprise a simple routine that can be done everywhere and at any time of the day.
But most important, look at the bright side of life!
Five Tibetans.......2006-03-24
Being a yoga practitioner for 6 years now - I found this book to be an excellent resource for those who want a quick effective yoga workout - those who don't have the time to do an hour a day as I do. It is also good for when you travel as it requires no mats, blocks, blankets or any of the other props needed for most yoga regimes. Only thing I found disconcerting was the First Tibetan which made me naseuous. I have to assume this would subside with time. Well written and easy to follow. A simple but effective book.
