Book Description
Understanding Women with AD/HD is designed to be a practical and readable guide for women at any age, with special chapters focusing on different stages of life.
Customer Reviews:
Must Read for Women W/ADHD.......2007-05-21
Exceptionally valuable, helpful and heartfelt information. Every woman who has this quirky brain issue will find more self-acceptance as well as a good laugh and some well deserved peace of mind.
Needs to be re-written.........2006-12-29
This book is a disappointing hodge-podge compendium of works by various authors. The chapter on CFS/Fibromyalgia-ADD link could have and should have been a milestone work that catapulted the book and the authors to world recognition but they totally dropped the ball and missed a golden opportunity here. The parts of the book that are actually written by Nadeau are quite good (few though it may be) but everything else will leave you bewildered. Too bad. Maybe if they revise it and clean it up with a better editor I will be able to recommend it.
Great reference book .......2006-11-10
This book contains valuable info not easily found elsewhere, for women with ADD / ADHD. EXCELLENT questionaires for evaluation and self-knowledge. Discusses how hormones and hormone changes affect ADD. Also discusses frequently co-existing conditions and treatment strategies, as well as the empowerment that can come with a diagnosis of ADD / ADHD. This book reads like a textbook but is not as heavy as most. moves quickly along and is neatly divided into specific areas of interest.
Good AD/HD Resource.......2005-12-21
When I was first diagnosed as ADHD (emphasis on the "H"), I craved knowledge on the subject. I turned to this book and learned so much. However, true to my inattentiveness, I haven't actually FINISHED reading the book! It's one of those things that comes with so much information I can only absorb it in small doses. So I read the chapters as they become meaningful for me in my journey of coping with ADD. Eventually I'll finish the book. Especially meaningful has been the section of "Women in the Workplace".
I ultimately purchased the book so that I could have the liberty of making notes in the margins and taking the self-assessment test in the front of the book. This book is a good place to start if you're new to the world of AD/HD and how to cope.
Must Read.......2005-08-18
This book will be a validating reading experience for any woman who has AD/HD, not to mention those in her family who want to understand her better. The author breaks down the symptoms, perceptions and realities of AD/HD so that the reader can get a clearer picture of what AD/HD is for women and what can be done in order to improve their lives. There are many references included in the book so continued research and reading is made easy. Do not pass this book by - you'll miss out on some VERY important information that will change your life for the better.

¸ How to tell if a child has A.D.H.D.
¸ Practical solutions to common behavior problems at home and school

Best book on ADHD.......2004-06-16
This book is the best book on ADHD that I have seen (and I have read several of them). Its easy to read and tells you everything you need to know about ADHD, from basic stuff to advanced knowledge. It explores ADHD from every aspect and offers solutions and speculations.
I highly recommend it. This is a life saver for any ADHD parent and makes you realize that having a child with ADHD doesnt have to mean the end of the world. With this book in hand you have everything you need to face this challenge.
A Must Read for Parents with an ADHD child.......2003-07-27
I have read many books about ADHD since my child was diagnosed a few months ago. This is by far the best book I've have read about the subject. Not only is it comprehensive about medications and causes, it addresses real behavior problems with practicality and humor. I read the whole book in one night, and came out of it with a new understanding of my son. It's comforting to know he's not the only one "acting like this". I highly recommend it to anyone working with an ADHD child or adult.
This book changed my life!.......2002-04-27
The paediatrician who eventually diagnosed my son recommended this book to me. I read it straight through, in one sitting, cried, laughed and came out the other end with a totally different view of my son. He was 10 and regularly said he wanted to kill himself. All his teachers just said he was badly behaved and disruptive but I knew there was something wrong. A year later and on Ritalin he is a different child. I have now bought at least 12 copies of this book (it has a different name here in England) to give to everyone who has any contact with an ADHD child. If you only buy one book, buy this one. Even my teenage daughters, who had no sympathy for their younger brother have read this and actually enjoyed it!
Excellent Resource!.......2000-03-28
I found this book to be a comprehensive and extremely helpful resource for parents and teachers of children with ADHD. As a Learning Consultant in a public school I have lent this book to many parents. It provides practical ideas on how to motivate, discipline, encourage, and manage children with ADHD. If you are a parent or teacher of children with ADHD I believe this to be one of the most helpful books on the topics.

Book Description
Synthesizing a wealth of recent research, this groundbreaking book focuses on the multiple pathways by which attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) develops. Joel T. Nigg marshals the best available knowledge on what is actually going on in the symptomatic child's brain and why, tracing the intersecting causal influences of genetic, neural, and environmental factors. In the process, the book confronts such enduring controversies as the validity of ADHD as a clinical construct. Specific suggestions are provided for studies that might further refine the conceptualization of the disorder, with significant potential benefits for treatment and prevention.
Customer Reviews:
An Outstanding Account of the What, How, and Why of Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-07-30
The What, How, and Why of Attention Deficit Disorder
This book is an excellent review of the current scientific information concerning attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This book is important and timely: ADD and ADHD do seem to be becoming more common, not just because of the number of people - such as school teachers - who are diagnosing it, but also in response to the ever-increasing demands on our attention. For people who have little in reserve, it is very easy for the ever-increasing demands to lead them to de-compensate.
In the first section Joel Niggs begins quite rightly with a discussion about whether ADD and ADHD are illnesses at all, or whether they are no more than labels applied to unruly or underperforming children and adults. This is an important discussion: there are still some who question the existence of these problems, but an increasing body of evidence has confirmed the clinical validity of these syndromes. ADD and ADHD appear to lie on a spectrum running from the highly focused to the seriously disorganized.
In Part Two, "How Does ADHD Work?" he breaks the section into five parts: Neural systems; Attention and arousal; Executive functioning or cognitive control; motivation; and motor control and timing. There seem to be clear deficits in each.
In Part Three, "Where Does ADHD Come From?" Joel examines the multiple pathways that may lead to ADD/ADHD, the genetic influences and both common and uncommon experiential risk factors.
In the Final Part Joel doe a masterful job of integrating a large amount of information into a coherent whole.
While ADD and ADHD may perhaps confer some advantages and gifts on people, there may also be some serious consequences of inadequate treatment. Excellent and extensive research into the consequences of non-treatment has indicated that if people with ADD and particularly with ADHD are left untreated, they are more likely to:
Develop substance abuse; Be involved in a serious accident; Engage in illegal activities; Contract a sexually transmitted disease; Have an unplanned pregnancy; Become separated or divorced.
This book is a well-written and detailed summary of research up to the end of 2005, by someone who has himself already made significant contributions to the literature. This is the one stop if you want to track down the key information in this increasingly complex field. The book contains a detailed and critical review of the world scientific literature, as well as some clever and creative ways of synthesizing a mass of information. The time will come when Joel will need to produce second, third and fourth editions of this book, but for the time being, it is probably the best single reference work on the subject.
This is a book for clinicians, serious scholars and for libraries. If you are a parent or relative of someone with ADD or ADHD, this is the resource to go to if you have a bit of scientific background. It is not the book to go to first. Neither is it the book for someone looking for a lot of practical solutions to some of the day-to-day issues that confront people and families who struggle with ADD/ADHD.
We owe Joel Nigg a debt of gratitude for what he has done in creating this book.
An outstanding contribution.
Do you want to know what ADHD is , how it works and where it comes from?.......2006-07-29
Dr. Nigg is one of the nation's foremost authorities on ADHD. I enthusiastically awaited the arrival of his new book after reading many of his important scientific writings. In line with the rest of his work, this book is a thorough, balanced, relevant review of the causes of ADHD, and so I was not disappointed.
The book begins with a discussion of the controversy surrounding the concept of ADHD. Dr. Nigg explains why ADHD as a diagnosis is clinically valid, he also defines the term "disorder" as applies to ADHD. With this background established, he then describes what is known about how ADHD works and where it comes from. He details what is known about the neuropathophysiology of the disorder in a manner detailed enough for physicians yet understandable by others. His explanation of the true meaning of the genetic data obtained in twin studies is especially new and important. Nearly every chapter has summary boxes to aid clinicians in counselling patients. These boxes contain the answers to questions commonly asked about ADHD.
The target audience for this book includes clinicians, scientists and advanced students. I would also recommend this book to parents who want to know what science has to say about ADHD--without the over simplifications so often found in popular books.

excellent resource...a "must have".......2007-04-04
If you have a child with ADHD, an Autism spectrum disorder/Pervasive Development Disorder, or sensory integrative issues then this book will be an excellent read!! I love that it has entire chapters/sections devoted to the interaction between a specific disorder/diagnosis/cluster, and sensory response/reactions...the book is well-written, is readily understandable to lay-persons, yet it is as useful to therapists as many other books on the market...my son's therapist copied almost the entire book when she borrowed it from me!!!
In a nutshell, this book gives you certain behaviors that may manifest, gives ideas on how to resolve...yet is never preachy...love this book
A Must Read.......2005-08-27
This book has important wisdom for parents and teachers. The authors write very compassionately and very professionally about the process of helping kids with a number of disorders that can interfere with learning. They are very helpful, and always respectful of the children whose learning patterns they are describing. This is a great book!! LO in New York
Excellent advice on dealing with your child's SI dysfunction.......2005-08-19
Authors Emmons and Anderson are both special education teachers, as well as moms of children with sensory integration difficulties, and it shows. Their insightful book offers excellent strategies for helping children with SI dysfunction, especially when it occurs concurrently with autism, Asperger's, ADHD or bi-polar disorder.
An Outstanding Book!.......2005-08-10
An easy to read comprehensive look at sensory dysfunction covering symptoms, definitions, diagnosis as well as assessments, curriculum strategies and modifications in the environment. A must have resource for parents, caregivers, educators and therapists.

Product Description
An estimated seven million American adults have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Understanding and Treating Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder provides accurate, timely information about the nature and treatment of this disorder. Written in a collegial style, this resource combines evidence-based material with clinical experience to address problems in diagnosing and treating adults with ADHD. Dr. Doyle shows how diagnostic and treatment methods in children with ADHD also apply to affected adults. He examines the role of medications, including new agents that expand the range of therapeutic choices.
Understanding the evolution of the concept and treatment of ADHD in children illuminates current thinking about the disorder in adults. Dr. Doyle presents guidelines for establishing a valid diagnosis, including clinical interviews and standardized rating scales. He covers genetic and biochemical bases of the disorder. He also addresses the special challenges of forming a therapeutic allianceworking with "coach" caregivers; cultural, ethnic, and racial issues; legal considerations; and countertransference issues.
He explores a range of options for treating adult ADHD:
- Detailed facts about using medication, with specific information on both CNS stimulants and nonstimulant medications. He also discusses highly touted medications that are actually ineffective.
- Full coverage of comprehensive treatment approaches beyond medicationfocusing on cognitive behavioral therapies, among others. He uses a detailed clinical example drawn from several patients to illustrate issues involved in treating ADHD adults over time.
- Complete review of conditions that may require treatment before ADHD can be addressed. Many ADHD adults struggle with comorbid anxiety, affective disorders, and substance abuse. Dr. Doyle explains how overlooked ADHD can complicate the treatment of other disorders. He provides strategies for the patient with medication-resistant or treatment-refractory ADHD.
The book provides in-depth discussion of such issues as the impact of ADHD in the workplace, including steps for maximizing job satisfaction; special considerations related to women; and the effect of ADHD on families. A useful appendix helps readers and patients find reliable information about ADHD on the Internet, allowing clinicians to develop an "e-prescription" to supplement medication and other interventions.
Dr. Doyle advocates the promise of enhanced life prospects for adults with ADHD that effective treatment provides. Besides addressing the special challenges of ADHD adults, Dr. Doyle conveys the rewards of working with patients who prove resourceful, creative, and persistent.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book for Professionals and Lay-Readers!.......2006-10-18
A thousand thanks for this excellent text, Dr Doyle!
It is rare indeed to find a book that provides vital, up-to-date information for the busy practitioner AND is so clearly written that it is easily understandable for the lay-reader. Tis book accomplishes both with a crisp writing style that is consistently clear, informative and engaging throughout.
Well-referenced chapters review the diagnosis, biological basis and comprehensive treatment of this increasingly identified disorder.
Dr Doyle even-handedly covers the many controversies that still surround ADHD in Adults. Especially helpful to the clinician is the chapter on managing Co morbid and Treatment Refractory ADHD. The section on "Work, Women and Family" even includes a very informative evaluation of "ADHD-Friendly Work"
Dr Doyle has masterfully written a handy and helpful reference for busy clinicians treating Adults with ADHD. Impressively, this text is also easily accessible to the non-professional or family member who is trying to understand and cope with the complexities and consequences of this challenging disorder.
I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with ADHD!
What The Doctor Ordered.......2006-09-01
Dr. Doyle's book is "just what the doctor ordered" for those of us who may be confused by the debate over whether Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is overdiagnosed. This book clearly defines ADHD from the disorder's biological basis and behavioral manifestations to an analysis of the medications in terms of what does and does not work in given instances, to the various pychological interventions, and even to a celebration of some of the unique talents of the ADHD-affected individual. While the book is addressed to adult ADHD, it is so comprehensive that the reader can understand ADHD on all levels--both juvenile and adult.
Perhaps more importantly, the book is a good read. Dr. Doyle uses vivid patient stories to illustrate his points. These stories are so engrossing that the person who recommended this book to me confessed that she had skipped the scientific analysis on more more than one occasion to get to the end of one of the stories.
I found myself in the opposite quandry when, for my next book, I chose Mark Haddon's novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," about an autistic boy. I loved the novel, but found myself longing for it to have an in-depth appendix by Dr. Doyle to give me the same careful understanding of autism that I now have of ADHD.
A Great Book for Anyone Interested in ADHD.......2006-07-20
Although this book appears to be aimed at psychiatrists and mental health professionals, most of it is quite accessible to the lay person like myself. I like professional journals and books because I want details and depth, but they are usually crammed with overly technical terms and very dry.
Dr. Doyle's book is the rare exception: a comprehensive, professional-level work that is actually enjoyable to read. His style is almost conversational, and although he presents a lot of technical information, I never felt like I was slogging through a textbook. Unfamiliar terms are clearly explained, and every chapter is sprinkled with specific references to groups, associations, websites and other books where you can get more information.
The chapters on medications provide the best review of currently prescribed ADHD drugs I've ever seen, in print or online. Doyle clearly explains each class of drug and how it works, and discusses critical issues like side effects, interactions, and precautions. Again, though written for doctors, this material will be very helpful for patients and families.
Doyle's approach to ADHD is sensibly holistic: he emphasizes the importance of each patient's uniqueness, and discusses the impact of factors like age, gender, ethnicity etc. And his survey of treatment options goes beyond traditional psychotherapy and medication to include ADHD "coaching," cognitive-behavioral therapy, and what he calls "environmental interventions" (making changes in one's social or work settings).
Doyle suggests that, once you've found a way to manage disruptive symptoms, it's wise to consider lifestyle and career choices that are compatible with adult ADHD. In this area (and throughout the book) he offers relevant examples drawn from his years of psychiatric practice. I found these stories fascinating, and they're a big part of what makes this book so engaging.
Highly recommended!
My Favorite .......2006-07-12
BRAVO!! Dr. Doyle's style of writing is enormously engaging and a quick read, despite the comprehensive and scholarly nature of the book. When I first picked it up, I actually found that I couldn't put the book down, as if it was a well-written novel.
He doesn't JUST describe the issues. He usually gives GREAT vignettes or examples of actual people or composites of those he's known who are dealing with difficulties and under certain situations (work, home, etc.). So, the images of people and their issues are very vividly portrayed.
I highly recommend the book to my psychology graduate students who will be treating adults with ADHD. In fact when students ask me, "How does ADD manifest itself" (like in young women who aren't necessarily hyper), I refer them to this book. As well, I think the book is appropriate for many patients and their loved ones. They can be helped to understand so many of the complexities related to living with the challenge of ADHD.

Customer Reviews:
The perfect guide for ADHD conspiracy theorists.......2006-11-27
This is the ideal book for people who'd like to tell others that their pediatrician or child study team has it all wrong because their kid actually has heavy metal poisoning, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, bad nutrition, ineffective parenting, creative genius, or an alternative learning style.
The author writes well and does offer some useful suggestions in child behavior management. However, she appears to have done only the minimal research into ADHD that is required to take snappy pot shots (often in the form of call-outs) at anything that passes for accepted wisdom in this field.
No doubt there is room for debate, but there are many much more informative, more balanced resources if you are genuinely interested in helping a child diagnosed with ADHD. If, on the other hand, you want at all costs to avoid accepted medical treatment -- or are trying to undermine someone else's attempts to help a child -- this is the book for you.
You HAVE to read this before medicating your child.......2005-09-22
I will just put my letter to Dr. Sonna. It sums up the way I feel about this book. This book literally changed my son and I's lives. You owe it to your child to read this before you medicate them. Please trust me on this.
Dear Dr. Sonna,
I had to send you this email because I'm about to burst with gratitude. Your book was so insightful, so down-to-earth, all the things a parent could wish for when they are broken-hearted and travel-weary from searching for answers. I am actually going to take this book to my son's teacher and gently encourage her to read it.
I especially enjoyed and appreciated the fact sections throughout and how you encouraged parents to become lobbyists and advocates and pointed out the built-in flaws in our legislation that allows for pharmaceutical companies to benefit from the way diagnosis is currently set up. I agreed whole-heartedly with all of your suggestions and was delighted to see someone not shy away from what could be deemed politically-charged statements.
So excuse my run-on sentences and please know that you have shored me up when I needed it the most, which of course means you have shored up my son. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reminding me I am his only true advocate in a way no one else will ever be. What a wonderful gift you have and how fortunate we are that you chose to share it. I sincerely hope that many blessings come your way for the good work you have done.
Much Gratitude,
Cathy Piper-Lally
New Book, Old Problem.......2005-04-04
Finally someone has written a book that seems to understand the problems that parents and kids have dealing with ADD. She knows that medication is not the only answer to ADD and in fact, bravely offers better solutions by way of food, nutrition, sleep, and PATIENCE...all things that can be done without chemical interventions and will bring about lasting life changes.

Book Description
What is the significance of the human ability to attach meaning to events, people, ideas and objects by associating them with pain or pleasure? This question lies at the heart of Sandra K. Woods and Willis H. Ploof æs insightful exploration into the biobehavioral underpinnings of ADHD. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and the Feeling Brain integrates research findings in the field of neuroscience and behavior together with observations and insights garnered from clinical practice. A compelling observation, one that is at the center of the authorsÆ model, is that those afflicted with ADHD appear to have considerable difficulty imprinting the feeling component of experience. This book, which is divided into four sections, unfolds with a discussion of neurobehavioral processes and the relevance of temperament to the understanding of this disorder. In the second section, the authors present an overview of the literature that has informed and guided their own practice and thinking. Also contained in this section is further background on ADHD, including childhood symptomology, prevalence rates, persistence of symptoms into adulthood, and medications, with a focus on psychomotor stimulants. At the end of this section, research related to ADHD and monoamine function is reviewed, revealing potentially fruitful lines of study in this area. Discussion of the model is revisited in the third section of the book, where authors present common sense practices, most of which are standard in the field and add their own practical insights. Another practical feature of this book is an appendix that simplifies basic concepts and treatment strategies and can be especially helpful as a handout for parents and teachers. A thoughtful examination of an enigmatic disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and the Feeling Brain breaks new ground for professionals in the fields of clinical/counseling psychology, social work, education, and nursing.

Book Description
Brainstorms examines questions surrounding the possible neurobiological underpinnings of the emotionally hyperactive and hyperreactive components of ADHD and related disorders. These pre-psychological substrata may, for example, be fundamental to what we think of as temperament.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Resource!.......2001-01-04
This book cover all aspects of the ADD / ADHD child. Good recommendations on meds. for different types of ADHD and why.
concise yet thorough discussion of ADHD and its management.......1999-08-05
I read a borrowed copy and was ordering my own book within 24 hours. Both as a professional working with "at risk" children and as the mother of a child with a psychobiological disorder, I whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Horacek's book. In a spare 211 pages he gives perhaps the clearest most readable discussion of neuroanatomy and neurotransmitters I have encountered. He covers medical management and includes a fascinating glimpse of drug manufacture and marketing, the FDA, and the quandry faced by medical practitioners (hence insurance companies and consumers) in labeling a collection of behavioral symptoms. This book's cost might give some pause, but in my experience one would have to combine 2 or 3 other less readable texts to approximate the content of this single volume. It's an ideal purchase for those who want to know "why".
