Book Description

As the mother of a developmentally delayed child herself, Sarah Newman has produced an invaluable resource to aid parents and carers of children with special needs deal with the difficult situations they face everyday. Covering different stages in the child's development from age 3 to 11, she looks at the areas of cognition, physical ability, sensory perception, language, and social and emotional development. After tackling the theoretical basis of each factor, she then suggests games and activities to use and offers comprehensive advice on the best strategies and methods to employ whilst playing the games.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for all children, but especially the learning disabled.......2005-04-13

This book does a very good job of explaining the different sensory systems, how they apply to learning for all children and how that differs for the disabilitis, and then how to create games and fun activities to facilitate learning/develop the skills learned through those senses. The suggestions are more directed toward autism but they are general enough to apply to all mental disabilities and normally progressing children. My only complaints are that it doesn't apply as well to children under 3 and it doesn't have as much information on speech development techniques as I was hoping for. I highly recommend it for all parents. (P.S. It is written in England English)
