Book Description

For active women, the outdoors continues to call, even during pregnancy. What vital women really need to know is how to nurture a healthy pregnancy while continuing to participate in the outdoor activities they love. What's safe and what's not? What are the benefits and risks for both mom and baby? In THE ACTIVE WOMAN'S GUIDE TO PREGNANCY, Dr. Aneema Van Groenou provides a thorough and accessible guide to practicing safe and healthful outdoors exercise throughout pregnancy. Starting with an overview of the amazing benefits of exercise during pregnancy, Dr. Van Groenou moves on to the myths and risks, then covers gear, warming up, cooling down, and stretches. The heart of the book is an activity-by-activity description of proper techniques and realistic expectations for each trimester. This guide is full of practical advice that will keep women healthy and mobile all nine months.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2006-03-22

Most of the all-in-one pregnancy/childbirth/newborn care books have precious little space devoted to information on exercise during pregnancy and a lot of what is included is overly conservative advice (as if being sedentary is somehow safer than being physically active).

Reading this all the way through would be a bit weird, but used as a reference it is fantastic. Advice is divided by trimester and is sensible. There is little about the post-partum period or about exercise and breastfeeding (this is, after all, about pregnancy), but what she does say on those subjects is also completely reasonable.

3 out of 5 stars Too repetitive.......2004-09-16

This book is probably good for the pregnant woman who is a true outdoor enthusiast and engages in many outdoor sports and activities. It covers gardening, walking, running, biking, skating, hiking, camping, mountain biking, rock climbing, mountaineering, horseback riding, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, paddling, boating, windsurfing, surfing, waterskiing, snow skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. If you intend to continue participation in several of these activities while pregnant, and you have lots of questions about how to do them while pregnant, then this book is probably useful. If, however, you are only interested in a few of these, it is just as easy to get the same info for your specific interests online.

In addition, much of the advice is very repetitive across similar activities. For example, the snow skiing and snowboarding chapters are almost identical. And there is repetitive advice about things like overheating and staying hydrated in all of the chapters. Most of the advice is pretty much common sense that can be found in other books and online.

I recommend "Maternal Fitness" by Julie Tupler. It provides a chapter on aerobic/cardio exercising with much of the same advice as this book plus a whole routine of great pregnancy-specific exercises with good illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Husband.......2004-06-04

My wife and I are both active outdoor types. I bought this book for my wife to try and make sure that we maintain an active lifestyle throughtout her pregnancy and after the birth of our son. We were able to follow the guidelines of Dr. Van Groenou and had a great time throughout the last couple months. There are no other books like this. My wife looked great and felt great as well. We are now happy parents to a healthy baby boy. Great advice in the book!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource.......2004-06-01

Finally, a pregnancy guide for those of us who don't want to hole up on the couch for 9 months! A clear assessment of risks (and rewards) of different activities (jogging,water-skiing, hiking, etc.)in a totally user-friendly format. Inspiring, too. Get it for anybody you know who is pregnant and still wants to get out there.
