5 out of 5 stars Well scrubbed book.......2007-05-13

This book includes a lot of common sense/tried and true methods for cleaning (and yes they do work) along with many new ideas I had not heard of before that are simple to carry out. I like that fact that the material is not toxic and will not set off my asthma like some of the store-bought items do.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-04-03

This book is full of excellent advice. I have been concerned about the products that I use for cleaning for a while and this book gave me a great one-stop resource to start doing something about it. The introduction on how to handle the mountain of stuff we tend to accumulate was a welcome bonus (buying a copy for my ex-wife just for that!).

5 out of 5 stars Cleaning up one step at a time..........2007-02-19

This book is a must have for every household. While most people do not get excited about housekeeping, the author has added humor to make this book engaging for all. Ridding your home of chaos and toxins is best completed one step at a time, and this book clearly communicates where to start and also includes tips that will support sustaining your gains.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but glad to own it.......2006-11-09

Nothing too new in this book, but I am happy that it is in the house. I forget how to mix cleaning solutions sometimes. It is a good reference to have on hand, though I think you could find most on the internet as well.

A good housewarming gift for a "just learning how to clean" couple/person.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing new............2006-08-21

I was a bit disappointed, same old stuff rehashed. AND, not full of do it yourself cleaners/remedies like one would suppose. Not nearly as 'Organic' as germ o'phobe...pages and pages on microscopic blah blah....I clean my home with organic products as much as possible,75%,and feed my family organic food...was hoping for a better mix of NEWER info, as there is A LOT of it, just surf the web!

Book Description

America’s perceptions about the inevitable effects of aging are about to be completely rethought, thanks to groundbreaking new information from an internationally known expert on hormones and antiaging medicine. Thierry Hertoghe, M.D., has an important message to share: people are aging unnecessarily.

Based on thirty-five years of scientific studies, The Hormone Solution: Stay Younger Longer with Natural Hormone and Nutrition Therapies is the first book that offers a prescriptive program to counter memory loss, weight gain, wrinkles, shrinking muscle mass, impotence, hair loss, and a host of other signs and symptoms of aging. Dr. Hertoghe offers an effective program of hormone replacement therapy using safe, low doses of natural hormones—in conjunction with a healthy diet and vitamin and mineral supplements—to help people maintain physical, mental, and emotional health and literally restore their bodies to a state that’s three to twelve years younger than their actual age. He identifies the fifteen main, crucial hormones found in the body and explains the process that restores each one to its correct level.

With a foreword by renowned doctor Barry Sears, The Hormone Solution is filled with self-scoring checklists, eating plans, nutritional prescription plans, and hormone shopping lists that help every reader calculate his or her personal hormone profile. Dr. Hertoghe is revolutionizing the medical field with his work, showing us how to treat chronic illnesses and the large and small aspects of aging by using preventive measures to drastically slow the aging process and its effects without costly procedures and surgeries. The Hormone Solution is a landmark publication that will revolutionize how people age, enabling us to live longer, healthier, and happier lives

4 out of 5 stars Learning about hormonal deficienties.......2007-05-15

This book is clearly written. The author makes it possible for everyone to get a clue about which hormones might be missing in his/her body before visiting a health professional. Many health issues are covered with the specific hormonal deficienties. I found it very clarifying and it brought me a step forwards in my search for my lost health. I have read also the books of John R. Lee. The book of Thierry Hertoghe gives not so much information about what one can do self in comparison with the books of Lee on female issues.

5 out of 5 stars Doctors Also Can Learn From This Book.......2005-09-06

What I like well in this book is the numerous tables, the questionnaires and the lists that summarize the essential data in each chapter.
What I like most in this book is the emphasis on clinical signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of hormonal imbalance rather than the usual relying on lab test only.

The author is from the fourth generation in a family of physician specializing in hormones well before the term "Endocrinology" had been invented. His great-grandfather, Dr. Eugene Hertoghe has given his name to the "Sign of Hertoghe", the shorter eyebrows of people with hypothyroidy and his father, Dr. Jacques Hertoghe has introduced the now widely used 24 hours thyroid hormone test. The test much better correlates with the signs, symptoms and complaints of thyroid hormone utilization than the usual thyroid hormone blood tests.
With his seminars and publications the author is well in line with the tradition of his family.
This book is a major contribution to our understanding of hormonal processes. I recommend this book to every person (inclusive physicians) interested in learning more about the way hormones affect us in all the aspects of our existence.

5 out of 5 stars If You Haven't Been Feeling Well & Don't Know Why, It May Be Whacked Out Hormones.......2005-09-04

I love how this book was written. Originally I set out to just do some learning on Bio-identical Hormones for a friend and found out that I may have issues with my own hormones.

He talks about what can happen to our bodies when our hormones are not balanced, and over the long-term, can lead to diseases.

The book is broken down into 4 major areas:
1. Hormones
2. Body
3. Mind
4. Hormone Solution

In Chapter 2 (which is a part of #1), he gives a quiz (Part I) on each of the 15 hormones he talks about in his book and the symptoms of deficiency. The hormones would be ACTH, Aldosterone, Calcitonin, Cortisol, DHEA, EPO, Estrogen, Growth Hormone, Insulin, Melatonin, Pregnenolone, Progesterone, Testosterone, Thyroid Hormones, and Vasopressin.

In Part II of the quiz, he quizzes your Energy, Sex, Sleep, Skin/Hair, Weight Control, Stress, Mood, Circulation (Heart & STroke), Joints, Bones, and Immune System.

It takes a bit to complete the full quiz, but well worth it. With the Part II stuff, he goes into further details about each of these.

In each of those sections, he'll talk about detecting & decoding one's deficiencies, how to eat to heal, the nutrients needed, supplementation, scientific evidence/studies, and concludes with summary of each of the 15 hormones that may impact that particular issue (i.e., weight issue).

For the Hormone Solution, he breaks this down into:
1. The hormone
2. Treatment
3. Recommended dosage & frequency
4. What they may be associated to in terms of impact with other hormones.

He has a couple pages for resources and 59 pages of references. WOW!!!

This book was very informative and the first book I read on hormones. I've since read several other books, but still like this one the best.

A good compliment to this book is Natural Hormone Balance for Women by Dr. Uzzi Reiss, who is a ob-gyn in Beverly Hills. He covers some other things Dr. Hertoghe doesn't.

Something I'd like to mention is I did go get a 24-hr urine analysis that looked at a number of the hormones mentioned in this book. His quiz made it fairly easy for me to have my doctor test for certain things and they were fairly close to being correct.

My naturopath has now given me some BIHs to help me rebalance those hormones I was deficient in. Am feeling so much better and this was about 3.5 weeks ago.

5 out of 5 stars The Hormone Solution: Stay Younger Longer With Natural ...........2003-01-19

I found this book to be well organized and easy to read and understand. There is a wealth of information about the role of hormones in the body, and the consequences of not having enough as you age. I enjoyed the detailed explanation of the function of each hormone. At the end of each section, Dr. Hertoghe adds a one page table of a condensed version of his recommendations for easy reference. That makes the book very user friendly. The book has information that is revelant to older and middle aged people, as well as people in their twenties. I thought I could share this book with my sister, but we both like it so much as a reference that we had to buy another one. Thanks to Dr. Hertoghe for shedding light on so many hormonal changes associated with getting older. Can't live without it anymore!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great quick reference.......2007-05-18

I really like the book! It is a great quick reference as well as "natural" parenting in "a nutshell". It gives the reader a good overviews on different topics and if somebody wants more in depth information, she/he can read get the books that The Mothering Magazine recommends. Even though I have Dr. Sears' book on breastfeeding, I learned something new in this book. I highly recommend it for any parent, specially if you don't want to be a "mainstream" parent!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative, Smartly Written.......2004-08-29

Great information, great resources.

Even on the issues I don't agree with, I have to respect where the book is coming from, as it is clear that there is a great deal of research, and thought and experience behind every aspect of this book.

This is not just some parent's musings on family life. There is valuable infomation, and research and evidence are provided.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Book!.......2004-04-11

If you are a parent buy this book. I was fortunate to receive it as a new mother wanting to follow my own instincts but unsure amongst a sea of different views. This book empowered me to know and understand that my instincts, to carry my baby with me as much as possible and not let her cry, were right. As in reading all books I did not use all of the suggestions but chose those that worked for me and my baby and that instinctively I felt were right. The information in this book is well researched and gives the reader an alternative option.
I cannot thank Pamela Anderson enough!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2004-02-25

I have two parenting books I thoroughly enjoy, and this is one of them (Dr. Sears "The Baby Book" is the other). I am trying very hard to be a great attachment parent, and so far, I agree with everything I've read in this book. Great overviews on a wide variety of topics.

3 out of 5 stars some good, some bad.......2003-07-12

There is a lot of good information in this book, but beware, if you embrace Judeo-Christian values, it may not be for you. Also I found it very strange that a book with the title Natural Family Living doesn't mention one word about Natural Family Planning (using no artificial contraceptives). What's up with that?!

Book Description

Having a baby can and should be one of the most joyful experiences of a woman's life. While there are hundreds of books that provide information on how to ensure the development of a healthy baby, few of them dedicate more than a few pages to the nourishment of the mother herself during this physically and emotionally demanding time. It is rarely discussed, but women commonly experience a wide variety of ailments during the postpartum period, from depression to anxiety, backache, and loss of libido.

A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health is the first book by physicians that is devoted entirely to telling women how they can prevent postpartum problems and attain optimum health after the delivery of their babies. Elements of the program, which is meant to be adopted during-or, if possible, before-pregnancy, include diet, nutritional supplementation, exercise, hormone-balancing, the use of medicinal herbs, and conventional medications. Developed by the authors in clinical practice, this program has a proven track record in helping women to avoid and overcome postpartum difficulties.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing health information for everyone.......2006-03-16

This book gives so much information about biochemical processes in the human body, that most people will benefit from it. I have never had a baby, yet it was incredibly helpful to me. I've bought this book as a gift for many friends and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to feel healthy again.......2006-02-28

This book is the first one that I have personally read that actually addresses physical needs and deprevations after pregnancy. I have been reading this book since my fourth month of pregnancy and I continually find myself using it as a resource for feeling like I did before my pregnancy. I am recovering so fast. I actually gained 60 healthy lbs. during my pregnancy and after only three months I have shed 50 of it. To be honest with you, I haven't had time to work out, but if you read in this book, now isn't the time to stress our bodies that way; we are equiped to recover naturally and Dr. Raffelock is an expert on just that. I recommend this book to any woman in post-partum recovery. However, I felt that it was even more beneficial to have this book as a resource durng my pregnancy, because it set the right tone for the events to follow.

5 out of 5 stars invaluable resource for pregnancy recovery.......2006-02-06

I was so happy to find this book when I was pregnant. While there are many books about eating right during pregnancy, there is almost nothing about postpartum diets even though nutrition is just as important for a mother's recovery and a nursing baby's well-being.

The authors of this book do an excellent job explaining how most postpartum problems actually result from nutrient depletion and hormonal imbalances. More importantly, they tell you how to bring your body back into balance through diet and nutrition, herbs, supplements, and exercise.

The authors explain how to read lab tests so you can take charge of your own postpartum recovery and don't have to rely on what your doctor may or may not tell you. Another feature I especially appreciated was that the authors realize that postpartum mothers don't have a lot of time and energy to institute major lifestyle changes and they offer tips and suggestions on food preparation and menu planning. There are also sections on breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, emotional stress.

I found this book invaluable during and after my pregnancies and I referred to it often when writing my book "The Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook." I recommend this book for all new mothers and mothers-to-be.

5 out of 5 stars A Godsend for Expecting Mothers and Their Doctors!.......2003-08-23

Drs. Dean Raffelock and Robert Rountree have truly produced a book that should be read by not only every expecting mother, but also by their doctors! If this were the case I firmly feel that the current horrific national epidemic of severe postpartum depression and infanticide that is all too commonly detailed on the evening news would be nothing more than a sad footnote in history. The current attempted solution, which is to simply give young mothers anti-depressant drugs, is clearly not working. Drs. Raffelock and Rountree construct this book in a clear and concise format so that the person with no medical or nutrition knowledge, or the highly trained physician, can equally benifit. The most current understanding of alterations in the nutritional, hormonal, and neurotransmitter status of new mothers is easily explained. Novel methods of diagnosing and treating these problems in the most non-invasive and supportive ways possible are clearly detailed in order for the woman to acheive a lasting and true recovery from the physiological stressors of pregnancy. It is obvious from reading this book that these two enlightened doctors are not only on the cutting-edge of knowledge in the fields of functional medicine and clinical nutrition, but they are also gifted clinicians who have compassion for their patients and have a passion for this grave public health issue. It is often said that medicine is not only a science, but an art. These doctors have produced a masterpiece. If it could only be read by every obstetrician in the country and if only there were more doctors who thought like them. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Exhausted..depressed?Read this book for cause and resolution.......2003-04-12

This book is a must read for all mothers no matter when you had your last child! My son is now 25 years old and I suffered for most of two and one half decades from many of the symptoms described in this book related to postpartum nutrient depletions. Like so many mothers, my symptoms started shortly after I gave birth to my son but none of my doctors knew to check me for deficiencies in the nutrients that my body donated to form the body of my baby.

As I have worked through this book making changes at my own pace, the rewards have been recognizable and very profound. My skin and hair, once dry are more supple and healthy. My digestive system is vastly improved. My mind clear without anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drugs, and my hormone balance is greatly improved eliminating mood swings and fatigue.

This book tells wonderful stories of real patients that had symptoms they turned around by working to give their body what it needed instead of dumping more chemicals in causing their detoxification systems to work overtime to deal with those chemical/medicines. Even though the stories are about women and are around pregnancy much of each story relates to anyone trying to give their bodies what they need in this stress filled environment with soil depletion, over processed foods, and environmental toxins.

This book has a comprehensive list of all vitamins, minerals, hormones, and nutrients and what they do for your body and what happens when they are out of balance. It also explains what to look for if you want a qualified doctor, someone certified in functional medicine. It also explains what lab work is available and how to read the lab work. If you are healthy and just want to give yourself the best chance to stay that way good recommendations are given on the best foods to eat and the most beneficial amounts and types of supplements needed to support this state of health.

If you don't know how to start there is a very easy to follow and clear plan on how to shop, prepare ahead and actually make healthy nutritious meals. There are even recipes included and suggestions on how to be creative. Spices and herbs are included not just for the taste quality but also for their actual health benefits.

I now know how important it is for all women to replenish their nutrient reserves after they give birth even if it is decades later! The information in this book inspires you to really take care of yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Best of alternative medicine field.......2006-07-31

As a result of reading this book, previously published as The Patient's Guide to Natural Healing, our family has resolved a lot of health issues. (We also started as patients at the author's medical practice, The Tahoma Clinic, near Seattle.)

It turns out our whole family has food allergies (gluten+dairy). My biggest benefits have been energy, weight loss and many little symptoms going away: hundreds of tiny pimples on uppper arms, excessive snot/ear wax, chunky-dandruffy-scalp - these cures a result of specific supplements. Our one-year old had "colic" as a baby, which turned out to be a dairy allergy (cow milk protein thru my "mama's milk"). Our six-year-old is also more calm and has fewer/milder ADHD-like moments. My husband has fewer headaches and joint pains.

We are mostly well now. The kids recover quickly from anything that's going around, and they never get ear infections. My hair and skin are the best they've been for many years.

The book comes out strongly against processed food and refined sugar.

Many therapies use vitamins, and a few use food. Beats using pharmaceuticals!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best natural medicine texts I've seen........2006-06-27

Great resource for consumers and health professionals alike. Nice combination of easily understood personal anecdotes balanced with more scientific information.

If you want a one-stop holistic handbook for diagnosis and treatment, NATURAL MEDICINE, OPTIMAL WELLNESS: THE PATIENT'S GUIDE TO HEALTH AND HEALING is for you: two doctors discuss all the real-world questions and concerns about common conditions, from menopause and illness to hypertension, multiple sclerosis and ear infections. It's these dialogues which make for such a unique presentation, surveying drug interactions, differences between holistic and traditional medical treatments, and adding case histories to liven up the topic and relate it to common patient experiences. An excellent guide: appealing and easy to understand.

    Book Description

Most people think summer is the warmest season. This story, however, is brimming with evidence to the contrary--from roaring fires to grilled cheese sandwiches to toasty flannel pajamas. A unique twist on the traditional wintertime picture book, the beautiful visual narrative follows a boy and his family though a day of hot breakfasts, steaming afternoon cocoa, and a festive candlelit party before bed.
With its inviting scenes, poetic text, and gorgeous illustrations, Winter Is the Warmest Season celebrates all the wonderful things that make winter the coziest time of the year.

5 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force in Any Season!.......2007-04-27

What's that you say...Winter is the WARMEST season?! NOOO--how can that be?!

Ms. Lauren Stringer answers skeptics and pre-schoolers alike with this lavishly illustrated and imaginatively written book. It's going to make my list of top 20 books read in 2007, because Stinger's case for winter is both compelling and beautiful. The premise would engagte any toddler or early grade schooler, but Stringer runs confidently with it, writing as captivating and luscious a book as I've read in quite some time.

If you've read the other reviews and product description, you'll know that both the practical (warm clothing) and the emotional (warm feelings) effectively contradict what the thermometer tells us. However, it's the way that Ms. Stringer tells the story that makes all the difference. It's a very active book, both in the active (as opposed to passive) voice, and the way she animates the objects that warm us. The young narrator doesn't merely say he put on a warm hat and coat; instead, he tells us, "my hat grows earflaps," and "my jacket puffs warm with feathers." Later, the boy's pajamas "will grow big warm feet." Winter doesn't rest here, it's alive and full of possibilities. (Actually, one skillful illustration shows assorted animals hibernating underground, while above, the "the snowman I build dance on top, wearing warm wraparound scarves.")

Transformations continue: "My iced summer's milk turns to hot chocolate. Cold jelly sandwiches turn into grilled cheeses." Throughout her book, Ms. Springer's imagery and language are spectacular:

    "When winter comes,
    summer's cool fans hide
    in dark basements...
    while sleeping rasiators awake
    to their dragon selves, banging
    and hissing and pouring heat
    all through my house."

This is pure poetry, and belies any thought that writing really good books for kids can be done by just anyone. I mentioned the emotional warmth that the book conveys, and we feel this in cats who sit on laps, and in festive, candle-lit parties with music ansd dancing and warm, festive clothing, snuggling and reading in bed with your parents and your cat, and later with your teddy bear. A surprise tops it off, in winter the boy might just dream of summer..."just to cool me off!"

The acrylic on watercolor paper illustrations are just as rich and inviting as the prose, with action and bold patterns and a varied palette (although warm colors abound.) A tour de force, in any season.

5 out of 5 stars A story that warms you!!.......2007-01-30

This is a wonderful story about all the different ways that make winter warmer than any other season. It starts off by stating that most people think summer is the warmest season and then continues to list the ways that winter is actually warmer(hot cocoa, thick blankets, fireplaces, hot baths, ect.) My daughter who is two really enjoys this book, but I think that I actually like it even more than she does. The illustrations are beautiful and the story even makes me warm inside on those snowy below zero days.

Dated, But what isn't? Well worth the price

3 out of 5 stars Classic Back to the Land Pamphlet.......2006-03-17

The Have More Plan is more of a long pamphlet than a book. Chatty prose and descriptions of the authors' life on their homestead. An excellent discussion and plan for a real WORKING kitchen. Nearly all of the information is sadly dated, but it does give an interesting look into the lives of early back to the land pioneers--without the political posturing that the Nearings (Helen and Scott) seem to be unable to avoid. Add it to your library of small farming books, but you may find the actual USEABLE information to be thin.

3 out of 5 stars Seems more like an outline.......2001-11-08

OK, there is some good information in this book. For example, I never heard of a septic tank having a siphon discharge system. But this book touches on it briefly, in one diagram and a sidebar, and goes on. I will have to research to see what are the disadvantages of a siphon discharge system and why they are not more widely used.

This seems to happen over and over again, this is more an outline or a checklist for further research than a comprehensive how-to book on getting back to the land. It is easy and enjoyable to read, the tone is light and conversational, the two authors have dinstince editorial voices, the layout is more magazine-like than a book (you decide if that's a plus or a minus). The postwar lingo and drawings, and the Leave It To Beaver assumptions of what family life should be, have not aged well.

This is a facinating period piece, but if you are really contemplating a rural lifestyle (and for some reason I am) Five Acres and Independence gives you a lot more information at a better price. The Have-More Plan covers the subject broadly but not deeply, and I feel that I've paid ($)for a comic book or an outline of talking points to convince The Little Woman that this is a good idea.

(For the record, there is no Little Woman in my life.)

5 out of 5 stars The best source of basic information for small homesteaders........1999-06-16

Written in the forties, this book has a wealth of information for anyone looking to live a self-reliant lifestyle. Contains all the basic information you would need to get started. Extremely helpful in layout of property and farm building design, in order to maximize land and building space and more importantly time. A must have book for modern day homesteaders.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastically dated artwork and writing; timeless tips........1998-09-13

We have converted our large city lot to a mini Have More Plan ranchette. While funky for its dated artwork and nifty lingo, The Have More Plan is an invaluable resource for long-term do-it-yourselfers and country gentlemen. Everything from hacking up chickens to designing the perfect kitchen for home food processing. WE LOVE THIS BOOK!!

    5 out of 5 stars Katheleen.......2006-07-12

This book contains quite a bit of health information that you don't get from your traditional doctors, although it should be that they read these books. Janet Maccaro's book is written in a simplistic way. A way in which it is easy to read and to understand. She also writes in such a way that you can feel free and safe to incorporate her remedies in your everyday living. They are natural and safe remedies. Of course, some of them you might want to discuss with your physician just to let them know you are considering, or are doing, a certian remedy that you read from her book. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in learing more about natural health remedies.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE.......2005-09-21

With so many possible side effects possible from traditional drugs and remedies, I believe the best answers come from nature itself. I found this book to be very helpful and I will use it as a resource for years to come. Why treat the symptom when God gave us natural answers to treat the root of the problem.

5 out of 5 stars Finally an herbal remedy book without the New Age hype!.......2003-12-26

I saw Dr. Maccaro on a talk show on the TV and found here to be very personable. Her book is a great resource for information and redmedies. I have been looking for an natural healing book but so many of them have so much New Age spirituality I could not bring myself to buy them. This book will give you down to earth remedies and uplifiting Christian veiwpoints. I found it very refreshing and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Natural Health Personified!.......2003-11-07

After hearing Dr. Janet Maccaro on a talk show, I couldn't wait to get her book Natural Health Remedies. It has been my belief for years, if it can be done the natural way, that's the way to go first. This "user-friendly" book encourages the reader to get their bodies back on track the natural way. The author is a Christian and believes we should look to God as the source of all healing and He has supplied every "herb of the field" as a support for the health of our bodies. One category most important to me, considering the times we are all in, is how our mind and spirit effects our health. Flower Power for Emotional Health is a miracle for those suffering from fears, worries, irrational thoughts, lack of self-confidence, despondency, etc. No other book does this like this one! Also extensively covered: Building Your Immmune System and Function; Top Ten Life Enhancing Supplements; Natural Healing Protocols; Anti-aging and Losing Weight. It truly is an A to Z book! A week after reading this book and using some of the suggested remedies, I have truly been astonished at the difference. My health food store is now recommending this book. It is a book everyone should read!
