Book Description
Change the way you clean and keep your family's home wholesome and healthy with the help of expert and activist Deirdre Imus.
We all grew up thinking chemical smells like bleach and ammonia signaled "clean." But as Deirdre Imus reveals, some of the chemicals we use to maintain our homes are doing us and our families much more harm than good. In Greening Your Cleaning, the first in her Green This! series, Deirdre shows how cleaning house the environmentally responsible way can be as effective and often cheaper than the more traditional, toxic, means. This volume includes:
- Simple, efficient cleaning methods for every room of the house
- Spotlights on everyday products (all purpose cleaner, glass/window cleaner, laundry detergent) and the toxic ingredients you should be wary of
- Summaries of the latest research on the toxic effects of ordinary chemicals
- Resource lists of widely available "green cleaning" products and retailers
Filled with tips and testimonials, Greening Your Cleaning will show you how to streamline your cleaning products and practices, and how easy it is to make "living green" your way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Great Hanbook for "Going Green" in the Home.......2007-06-25
Ms. Imus does an excellent job of covering practical tips for each room of the house that aren't difficult to implement. This is a book I know I'll refer to again and again, and I'm looking forward to future releases from her.
Supergreen.......2007-06-14
Deirdre Imus presents a thorough introduction to greening at home. As a microbiologist I think it may be a bit overzealous, but that is probably necessary to focus our attention on such an important subject. She clearly ties home greening to environmental effects. I read the book and started the process, as she recommends. I plan to stay with it! Thanks, Deirdre!
Philip in Green Bay.......2007-05-30
Excellent! This is written in a personal-plain-english language that can be easily understood by any caring person. Deirdre Imus loves people and makes the point that exotic harsh chemicals really aren't necessary. Her own line of products shares this same, "bottom up" pure morality. Our cleaning products should CLEAN without POISONING. A MUST READ for anyone who wants to be up-to-date on the "here and now." This book is timely and important.
Green This! Volume 1.......2007-05-25
Great book. Lots of easy things to change the way you do things. Common everyday things that can help.
Practical & Easy to do !.......2007-05-23
Love the way she stated the reasons why she believed we should help the planet by helping ourselves plus all the tips were simple and easy to apply!

Book Description
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Manual & Desk Reference is a straightforward reference and training source designed to provide the site safety and health professional with a comprehensive guide to responding to emergencies involving releases or potential releases of hazardous substances. Important topics are discussed such as: Toxicology, Sampling and Analysis, Personal Protective Clothing, Chemical Incompatibility, Decontamination, Labels, Placards, and Other Identification, and Site Investigation, Control, and Emergency Response.
Designed along the lines of 29CFR 1910.120 (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response regulation), this manual covers the training requirements of managers, supervisors, and professionals (engineers and scientists) involved in hazardous waste site operations and includes all topics covered in the OSHA-required 40-hour training course.
The CD-ROM contains the book on PDF as well as the NIOSH Chemical Database for 2002. There are blank forms such as: site health and safety plans, checklist, worksheets, sample MSDS sheets, accident report forms, and site visit forms.
The CD also includes sample questions, practice exams and practical field exercises.

A Welcomed Addition To My Reference Library.......2002-05-01
...
Perhaps the most complicated and convoluted set of regulations is those concerning hazardous waste, its handling, disposal, and response to its release. Of course it can be considered that the Federal Government did err by calling process by-products hazardous waste instead of following its performance-based philosophy as demonstrated in the OSHA regulations. Regulatory compliance could have been so much simpler if the definition employed was - this by- product has the potential of being hazardous if miss handled, such miss handling entails the following. Alas, this is not the case and we are burdened with a set of regulations that can turn youth aged overnight.
There is hope however, and a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel can be seen. Coming like Dumas' Three Musketeers of old, galloping into the fray and seeking to make order out of chaos come the Hackmans with their Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response Manual and Desk Reference. Since receiving this volume, it has become a ready and useful reference. It provides 16 chapters along with a CD-ROM of essential compliance information. A true compendium of valuable and useful data, guidance, and analyses.
For example, consider Section 2. Hazardous Waste Defined: Contained therein are the following major topics: The OSHA Definition, EPA Definitions, The DOT Definition and Training Aids and Resources. These are then further broken down into sub topics. Such organization, scope and thoroughness provide a valuable tool when evaluating a particular situation or compliance methodology. Other sections cover such topics as Material Hazards, Chemical Incompatibility, Toxicology, and Sampling and Monitoring to name a few. The most substantial section is entitled Superfund Sites and Brownfields: Site Investigation, Control and Remediation. This alone is broken into 22 subsections, each of which is further subdivided.
Perhaps one of the best technical writers of the last century was Samuel Glasstone. His volumes on Chemistry and Nuclear Engineering were very easy to read, understand, and use. This is because he endeavored to number every new topic so that easy reference could be made. This also provided logic to the subject matter, which assisted in the flow of the information that was providing. The Hackmans have effectively employed this numbering technique, and by doing so have provided not only simple logic and understanding to complex subject matter, but have also provided easy access to the information provided in the text.
The text is enhanced by a Glossary of 91 pages plus a 12-page list of Acronyms. Both of these reference aids are important and necessary because of the complexity of the subject matter and that Federal Regulations breed and feed on acronyms and convoluted terminology. It is almost impossible to maintain understanding and awareness of all of them. In fact, the extensive glossary is a welcome adjunct because of the myriad of technical terms and regulatory definitions a fractioned needs to employ and understand. For example, in this glossary, the term hazardous substance is defined by 7 specific requirements; CERCLA, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Section 112r of the Clean Air Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, DOT, Solid Waste Disposal Act and OSHA. This depth and breadth is valuable because it enables a comprehensive evaluation of a particular situation and assists in eliminating or at least minimizing the chance of an omission error.
It must be remembered that many practitioners are experts in a particular technical or regulatory area. As such, they need a tool that assists them in understanding and in becoming aware of requirements outside of their area of expertise. The provision of comprehensive definitions and information helps to foster such a broad perspective.
In addition to the book a special CD is provided as an additional resource. According to the authors this CD serves three purposes: It provides downloadable and printable resources for trainers - these include a sample HAZWOPER Worker exam, It provides a selection of NIOSH Databases which includes the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods and the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, and lastly it provides 18 appendices to the text - these appendices include Limits for Air Contaminants ("Z Lists") 29CFR1910.1000 and the OSHA HAZWOPER Standard, 29CFR 1910.120. Just the contents of the CD is worth the purchase price of the text. All in all, according to the contents, the CD covers 33 separate topics.
When dealing with the complex issues that practitioners face every day, the information contained in the CD forms a comprehensive foundation of knowledge, data and information. This is presented in a concise and easily usable format. Also, instead of creating a second volume, the authors wisely chose this option of the CD to compliment the text, thereby producing one volume packed with essential information and resources.
One of the major frustrations a practitioner faces is that it is usually necessary to consult various references in order to address a particular situation. When a volume comes along that provides an encyclopedia of useful and necessary information, it does simplify many other time-consuming information search tasks. The profession has benefited from this work because it provides that simplification. The authors have brought together information from diverse sources into one volume. One volume, that has already proved its value to my practice.
The only shortcoming is that the use of color, especially in the signs and placarding examples would have been useful and would have assisted in making its reference value even greater. Seeing these items in the colors specified by the regulations would have enhanced the understanding of their meaning and employment. Perhaps just a color insert or inside cover display would have served this need adequately.
This volume has become a useful and welcomed addition to my reference library, and well worth the modest price.
Hazardous Waste / CLEAR & SIMPLE.......2002-04-27
We own an environmental contracting company and we are responsible for training our employees. This is the best book that we have seen to date. It is simple to read and easy to use. One of our services is hazardous material training for our client base. We are planning to use this book in the training classes. We enjoy how the book is laid out and how one subject rolls into the next. The subject matter is right on track for our industry. It is about time a book like this was printed. We are planning to generate revenue from the sale of this book and the upcoming classes that we are developing.

A really great book........2007-06-17
The photos are simple, beautiful, and informative. The information for each plant is really helpful, and it's nice to have a chart of which toxins come from which sources. I really enjoyed seeing the different plants and picking a good one for our house (although it was hard for me to track one down and I actually ended up buying seeds for it--I hope they'll grow!). The book is organized pretty intuitively, although navigation might take a little longer if you want to find a particular plant (since they're in order of overall rating rather than alphabetical order, you'd have to either use the index or flip for a while).
The only reason I didn't give the book five stars is that I would make an addition to each individual page with a plant on it: I'd list information about whether the plant is poisonous to humans and their pets. For people who have young children, cats, dogs, and/or other animals in the house (or the clinic, or wherever the plants will be placed), this is an important consideration.
Growing Fresh Air.......2007-06-15
Great information in an easy to understand format. Readers learn what plants are best for home or office to remove toxins and provide clean and healthy air. Everyone wants to borrow it!
Very Helpful............2007-06-09
I gave this book 5 stars because of the plant info....very precise about the benifits of the 50 top plants, helps you to narrow the field quite a bit. The basic text of the book is a too drawn out and boring for me....you read through a bit of yawn and then come upon a nugget of (in my opinion!) quality info....so you deal with the yawn parts so as not to miss anything! Overall, I highly recommend this book for anyone with respiratory problems. I 'planted' my home, especially the family room and bedroom, and can say that I have seen dramatic improvement in my breathing (I have asthma). Hope it works as well for you!
informative.......2007-05-12
Very informative on plant that clean the air in your house including their care.
An Essential Reference Book.......2007-03-20
I used this invaluable book as a resource and reference in my book, Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify & Energize Your Life, Your Home & Your Planet because it proves that plants remove toxic chemicals in the home.
Bill Wolverton, Ph.D., of Wolverton Environmental Services in Mississippi, spent the past twenty-five years researching the healthful benefits of plants. He names fifty best houseplants to clean up your environment. They are listed in descending order, with the overall rating based on the plants ability to remove chemical vapors, ease of cultivation, susceptibility to insect infestation and transpiration rate. Dr. Wolverton provides details, advice and growing tips on all fifty plants.
Each of the fifty plants is shown in full color with an additional closeup photograph of each plant. Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet

CD version of this classic chemical safety reference........1999-03-24
SAX's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Ninth Edition-CD-ROM Version
The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewer, an EPA First Responder, found the Ninth Edition of Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials-CD ROM version (SAX CD) to be a powerful database of easily retrievable, detailed, and pertinent information. The reviewer envisions the target users of the SAX CD deriving the most benefit to be: chemical operators, chemical process engineers, chemists, clinical toxicologists, fire companies, first responders, HAZMAT teams, industrial hygienists, plant managers, physicians, police departments, process safety managers, research professionals, risk management planners, safety engineers, transportation officers, and treatment storage and disposal facility (TSDF) personnel.
The 22,380 materials included are categorized at a minimum according to: Listing Name, Hazard Rating, Chemical Name, Molecular Formula, Molecular Weight, Chemical and Physical Properties, Synonyms, Toxicity Data with References, (instantly accessible by screen "pop-ups"), and Safety Profile.
Where available, NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limits, OSHA Permissible Exposure Levels, ACGIH Threshold Limit Values, (all expressed as Time Weighted Averages) and German MAK exposure limits are included. Consensus Reports (Community RTK, EPA TSCA and Genetic Inventory list) along with DOT hazard Classifications and UN/NA 4-digit identifier (for HM-181), CAS Registry number, and Class (carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen, primary irritant, food additive, etc.) are also included.
For forty years, NST/Engineers, Inc. personnel and associates have found editions of SAX to be an invaluable resource. The Ninth Edition on CD ROM provides the instant retrieval capabilities sought by the electronic communication age. The program includes an intelligent default, twelve-characteristic, search engine. It highlights each "hit" in the text and has a "tracking" system that allows the user to look forward or to "backtrack".
In the NST/Engineers, Inc. trials, SAX CD was used in "mock" HAZMAT spills. The reviewer found that the initial assessments of the spills were conducted many times faster by using the SAX CD. Armed with a laptop computer, as are most police and other emergency responders, the addition of this software will greatly decrease response time and reduce the confusion that routinely surrounds hazardous materials incidents. An increase in facility and public safety will be provided by the fingertip access to the knowledge base in the SAX CD .
The SAX CD works on both PC and Macintosh platforms.

Alternative Pet Care for Everyone.......2007-06-12
This book is a constantly used handbook for me. I bought this copy to replace the one that I have given away most recently. It is wonderful to be able to help your pet feel better, in addition to what your vet can do, with relatively inexpensive remedies available at the health food store and with accupressure which also helps you bond with your pet. I was even able to get remarkable results from an inexpensive & common TCM patent remedy for my dog who had great difficulty moving her hindquarters after a life-threatening infection. it worked within hours!
Technical, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.......2007-05-07
I bought this book on the recommendation of an integrative vet I know. It does throughly explain TCM, but if you aren't familar with TCM, I would recommend having someone help explain it to you. Some of the info in the book can be used without reading in depth and I used some of the techniques to ease stiffness in pets right away. I haven't pick it up much because it isn't a "light read", at least to me- not a book to read to past time. It is through, probably one of the best layperson books for animal Traditional Chinese Medicine. The price is really good, too, and the book is almost 400 pages.
Wonderful Information.......2007-03-13
This was a wonderful and interesting book. I loved learning how Chinese Medicine applies to our pets. I have gotten much knowledge from this and have tried some of the techniques. They work!!!
Really liked this book.......2007-01-03
This book shows the pictures I really needed, besides the explanation of where and how to find the points. It tells what the points are used for, and I am very happy with the book. I have used some of the points to keep my dog alive, she has Systemic Lupus, and had gotten to the point of not eating at all, I used some of the points to stimulate her appatite, then several more groups to stimulate her stomach, spleen, liver, and kidneys, etc. I had another dog with S.L.E. and she died because she had no hunger, and she was stopped up so she couldn't eliminate. So far this book has helped in both cases. I also use energy (Reiki-Do) and others energies, but that's another story. It all works together so far. My dog is getting elderly though, so don't know how much longer we have, but this book has helped to make her life much better WITHOUT harmful drugs (my other dog had the drugs and lasted only 11 months). Dog has been in remission on several occassions so far, without drugs and we are coming up on 11 months with her. Keeping our fingers crossed and am not yet using the book to its fullest.
Great Book.......2006-11-06
A very good, informative read. Sadly, it arrived the day my dog died. Wish I'd ordered it the first time I came across it.

Great Text For Environmental Design Management ! Flawless!.......2006-10-13
I live, study and work in the New York Tri-State region and this book is pretty great because the author also lived, worked and studied in the same region. Whats good about that? The Human Development and Expliotation is our region is very diverse and often connects directly with other prominent regions around the globe. The author basically covers alot of legalities, origins, design principles, and field work analysis really well.
This was one of the easier to read text in my classes, not because it is written in laymans terms, but he writes the ideas in a clear concise manner and covers alot of material with great efficiency using (the best I've seen in any enviro-engineering text) superb diaghrams, pictures and charts.
As a whole I felt the text demystifies alot of what this field is about so I usually recommend it to other non-environmental engineers, planners and designers that I come across in my school and work.
The book is expensive but I felt it was one of those few (if any) books you'll ever buy in college that is worth every penny.
This one is a keeper!
GREATEST ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING BOOK.......1999-02-05
GREAT!!!!!
94 S: Excellent Resource, Environmental Health professionals.......1998-10-15
I have just reviewed the ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND SANITATION 1994 SUPPLEMENT, by Joseph A. Salvato and Joe E. Beck. It's a great resource for professionals seeking a broader vision of environmental health practice areas and where we are heading. Prof. Beck obviously put a lot of work into conceptualizing this volume and working with the distinguished contributors. It shows. In particular, I found the first chapter, Stakeholder Focused Interactive Planning (SFIP)by Joe Beck and Steven Ison to be a brilliant piece on the desirability of (indeed, the imperative for our profession to) include the public in problem-solving and planning. I have used this process and mediated disputes ranging from siting controversies (haz. waste facility siting in Massachusetts) to determining future land use options at Hanford in the nuclear weapons complex. I commend both Beck and Ison for their clear portrayal of the paradigm as well as the steps one undertakes in conducting such planning. Federal government engineers and planners have been learning the hard way about what happens when decisions are made without public input and without regard to the values, interests, and expectations of so-called stakeholders. At Hanford, more than $20 billion in appropriations has yielded preciously little in terms of actual cleanup: one may wonder if Congress will continue to appropriate the substantial $6 billion a year for the Dept. of Energy's Environmental Management Program without consensus of the public on #1) the benefits or #2) the ameliorated risks from present expenditures. Current stakeholders come from a wide range of public interest groups and they do not get along particularly well. They do not have current programs or projects that reflect the use of the SFIP and researchers should be asking themselves, "Why not?" (Resources for the Future [RFF] has an on-going research project that tackles public participation in environmental decision making).
I would also like to comment on Ch. 6 "The Institutional Environment: Biosafety" by Darly Rowe. The importance of Dr. Rowe's conclusion that we must rely on consultation and working with the client on biosafety issues cannot be overstated. I also like the typology which places biosafety issues in proper perspective. We seem to be deluged with risks and risk information, and his approach is clear, concise and elegant. In sum, I believe that environmental health professionals can apply the insights in this series of articles in a way that will help supplant the "command-and-control" mentatlity that has battered so many of our colleagues and public health/environment inspectors, and baffled decision makers in the past two decades. Asst. Prof. R. Steven Konkel, Ph.D., EKU
Excellent reference book with questionable publisher support.......1997-09-14
This text is one of the most definitive AND USEFUL shelf references for the environmental health sciences. Detailed, accurate, wide-ranging on topics of immediate interest to the practicing sanitarian, engineer or the very interested non-practitioner.
Support from the publisher has been poor. For two years after the announcement of the current addendum, the publisher "disavowed knowledge" of an addendum. When published, the addendum had the same ISBN number as the complete text -- creating the unture appearance of a "reduced" price complete addition.
Salvato, could for the price of this text, be on a more current update of information contained in some chapters (2-3 year cycle). The scope of this work would justify numerous consulting authors. While it is one of the best shelf references and "learning texts" it could still be improved and be better supported by a publisher that sometimes seems to have insulated itself from the buying public.

You must read this book!.......2007-03-08
I love the Body Ecology Diet! It is easy to read & so informative. I feel so much better now that I eat as the book describes. I have more energy, my skin is clearer, I feel lighter & I've lost a little weight!
Tremendous Gratitude for Transformative Information.......2007-03-05
I learned of this book from Truth Calkins, a remarkable guy that healed himself using Body Ecology Diet priniciples. He is truly insightful and can be seen on YouTube.
The lifestyle changes recommended in the BED are not simply implemented by everyone. But with perserverence, the diet can truly transform your health, and therefore your life, for the better. It definately has for me. I work in a health food store and have recommended many of the BED principles to customers who have visited many doctors to no avail and are looking for something that really works. They not only feel the difference but express tremendous gratitude for this valuable information.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever taken a course of antibiotics, suffers from fatigue or lack of energy for no apparent reason, dark under-eye circles possibly due to adrenal problems, among many other symptoms.
Additionally, I recommend David Webster's book, Achieve Maximum Health: Colon Flora the Missing Link in Immunity, Health & Longevity to anyone looking to dig deeper into establishing a healthy inner balance of microflora.
Never stop searching, and have the best day ever. Cheers to achieving radiant health!
Another diet book.......2007-01-16
The Body Ecology Diet seems perfectly suited to the times. A health conscious generation interested in alternative medicine would naturally be curious about purchasing this book and discovering what it has to offer. Unfortunately, as I flipped through the pages, I was surprised to discover a support of the theory of candidasis and a lack of individualized diet planning that you at least get along with most gym memberships.
The Body Ecology Diet is just another diet book and one that's definitely not worth 22 dollars a pop. *Without the cost of food*
You can buy stevia powder and kefir at your local Whole Foods anyway. What's the point in paying more to order it online?
A better book to read would be Sally Fallon's "Nourishing Traditions."
The Body Ecology Diet.......2007-01-12
I'm afraid I am of little help in this area. I bought this book as a gift, but the recipient was very excited to have it.
The Best Way Of Live Book EVER!!!.......2007-01-11
If you are looking to improve your health greatly then this is the book for you. This way of life takes a lot of discipline and home cooking but it is well worth it. I personally have felt a tremendous change in my health since starting this way of live and I highly recommended it to anyone.

Book Description
Reveals the use of direct perception in understanding Nature, medicinal plants, and the healing of human disease
• Explores the techniques used by indigenous and Western peoples to learn directly from the plants themselves, including those of Henry David Thoreau, Goethe, and Masanobu Fukuoka, author of The One Straw Revolution
• Contains leading-edge information on the heart as an organ of perception
All ancient and indigenous peoples insisted their knowledge of plant medicines came from the plants themselves and not through trial-and-error experimentation. Less well known is that many Western peoples made this same assertion. There are, in fact, two modes of cognition available to all human beings--the brain-based linear and the heart-based holistic. The heart-centered mode of perception can be exceptionally accurate and detailed in its information gathering capacities if, as indigenous and ancient peoples asserted, the heart’s ability as an organ of perception is developed.
Author Stephen Harrod Buhner explores this second mode of perception in great detail through the work of numerous remarkable people, from Luther Burbank, who cultivated the majority of food plants we now take for granted, to the great German poet and scientist Goethe and his studies of the metamorphosis of plants. Buhner explores the commonalities among these individuals in their approach to learning from the plant world and outlines the specific steps involved. Readers will gain the tools necessary to gather information directly from the heart of Nature, to directly learn the medicinal uses of plants, to engage in diagnosis of disease, and to understand the soul-making process that such deep connection with the world engenders.

A work of art.......2007-05-14
This book is truly a beautifully written work of art. For those who are ready, it can open doors to a new way of being in the world. It will change much more than how you see nature........it will change your relationship with yourself and the world.
Beautiful and Profound.......2007-03-05
This is an intriguing book about our essential connection with the plant kingdom. Herbalists around the world are lamenting the loss of plants that have medicinal properties, some of which have not yet been discovered.
There is a great, and little explored puzzle: virtually every known group of humans has developed sophisticated plant-based medicines and agents for altering states of consciousness. Many are only used in complex mixtures. Too much of one ingredient and not enough of another, and the concoction is either inert or toxic. Yet to have found all these plants and all of their combinations by trial and error would have taken armies or researchers and hundreds of thousands of years. Throughout the world, traditional healers report that they learned about these properties from the plants themselves. They speak of using intuition and the "intelligence of the heart" for the direct perception of nature. Stephen Buhner suggests that this perception comes from the neural network within the physical heart that beats in our chests.
Throughout the book he presents countless examples of people from Thoreau to Luther Burbank and Goethe, who saw deeply into Nature, not through the intellect, but through the heart. He shows us how these people obtained their direct knowledge. It is very clear that Stephen Buhner is not reciting something that he read, but he is telling us about his own direct and deep perception of Nature. He explains how we can all share in this communion with Nature. He goes on to teach us how we, like the shamans of old, can learn the medicinal uses of plants directly from the plants themselves. He also shows us how this opening up to the world of plants can have profound effects upon us.
The fundamental premise is extremely interesting and the second part of the book is excellent. So why "only" four stars? There are two reasons. First, I am not convinced that the connection between living beings can be reduced to electromagnetic fields. The author had some excellent material, but seems almost to lose his nerve, and to try too hard to find a "scientific" explanation for his observations, while not giving enough credence to the evidence suggesting that the web of life is a more subtle underlying property of the Universe.
The second is the style of his writing. He describes the first half of the book as linear and the second half as not. He calls the two halves systole and diastole, to reflect the major cycles of the heart. And he invites the reader to read the book in any order. He tries quite deliberately to move away from a linear, verbal and analytical presentation. Many of the pages are broken up by italicized words or phrases on separate lines and quotations, poems and comments that don't always seem to be in the right place. It may be that he is trying to stir us up and make us think. Or rather to not think: to apply our intuition to his words. But it can make reading a little difficult.
Despite my two quibbles, I hope that this book is widely read for its stories, anecdotes and Buhner's encyclopedic knowledge about plants. It is an interesting but not always an easy read.
for those hungering to travel deeper.......2007-01-16
SECRET TEACHINGS is equisitely written, inspiring and offers new hope for the human species and ultimately for the planet. Buhner's poetic writing is often trance inducing. He superbly describes the territory of the sacred and makes navigation of interspecies communication easily accessible. He lays out the map so all we have to do, is the work. Reading this book, I kept hearing a voice inside saying, "I want this." I knew to what the voice was referring, a life of vastly rich and varied experiences that went far beyond the surface of ordinary daily life. The teachings in this book have become my life guide.
This work is an integration of well documented research on the heart as an organ of perception, writings by those, such as Kabir, Geothe,Thoreau, James Hillman, and others, past and present, who have travelled this way as well as the authors own poetry and life experiences.
SECRET TEACHINGS is a must read for anyone who is intersted in deepening their life experience, who is inclined to go beyond reductionist methods of being in the world and for those who hunger to feel the touch of spirit on their body.
The book is easy to read and easy to skip around in from section to section, following your heart and interests. Buhner lays out in fine detail the process of depth perception; of seeing beyond the surface of things with "the unworn sides of your eyes."
At the end of the book there are several exercises to enhance your awareness of the world while reclaiming the parts of you that have been sequestered away so that with practice, we can once again walk in the world as an integrated 360 degree personality, with joy and sponteneity.
The missing secrets of the plants.......2007-01-09
If I could, I would give the following title to this book: the missing secrets of the plants. The book is beautiful, full of poetry and quotation. But, but and but. You can buy it to reading at the airport, with long lines... If you are, like me, looking for the secret teachings of the plants, feeling the soul of it when you read it, you can not find here.
Overall ok, not consistent, not visionary.......2006-08-17
This is generally a good book to serve as an introduction to the consciousness of working with plants in a sacred manner. However the quality of writing, though well researched, does not inspire. You don't find yourself absorbed in the writing, just reading facts and stories.
There are a few practices buried within the book but they are buried. There should have been seperate areas to emphasize these practices. As an example of the writing style the chapter on healing and death talks about death and how shamans approach it for along time. Then the story about how animals created diseases and how plants offered to help people is relayed. Then the content switches back to the death topic again. The writing shows a general lack of polish and very much lacks telling you how to enter the sacred relationship yourself.
A good book, but did not live up to its potential.
If you are looking for something in this genre with much better writing ability check out Connie Grauds' Jungle Medicine (www.junglemedicine.net). From Connie you will get information that is first hand rooted in the world of shamanism.

The Body Ecology Diet.......2007-05-05
This book is an absolute necessity for anyone that wants to reclaim their health. Donna Gates has researched throughout the world to find answers to so many health issues that people are facing today. This book combines so much information to assist in healing... our inner ecology is the first place to focus! -- Thank you, Donna, for dedicating your life to helping others and getting this information out to the world!

For the person committed to bringing their body into a healthy inner ecology.......2006-06-25
Donna Gates has created an outstanding diet (Or as I call it nutritional plan) for those people that want to focus on building their inner ecology; and then creating a healthy external body from this.
This nutritional plan is not another quick fix, but it is a way of making you look at what you put in your mouth, while educating you for making better alternatives.
There is one flaw I found with this book - Not with the diet.
I found that the lay out and information was not in sequences. This made it harder to read, than if Donna had have put the information in a sequenced order.
The results of balancing your inner ecology can help with
- Headaches - Low sex drive
- Depression - Food allergies
- Cancer - Joint & muscle pain
- Aids - Digestive problems
- Skin Rashes - Menstual irregularities
Donna teaches you begginning with the foundation of good health and the priciples of the body ecology diet. She educates you on how to rebuild your immune system and create a bright, healthy future.
It has several pages at the end of the book with recipes and menu suggestions.
I would say that this is not for people wanting a quick fix, or the easy way out. This is a way of life, and a life long way of eating. I know once I read this book I realised I wouldnt ever want to eat differently.
Blessings to you and your health!
Fabulous book for anyone battling digestive issues!.......2006-05-06
My youngest has battled digestive issues since she started solids. This book gave me wonderful guidance on how to clear up those problems and help her body/gut heal. It has made a tremendous difference in her overall health. While I think her "diet" is good for everyone, it's a little too restrictive for most. I know I could never stick to a diet this rigid, but I have made a lot of dietary changes myself because of this book. Love it! Love it! Love it! Highly recommend reading this book.
Excellent book on candidiasis........2006-03-04
Fun to read, easy to understand, very helpful. I've been working on diets for candidiasis for many years, and this bring all the best of it together, plus does not advocate for any drug. Highly recommend.
Worst written book on digestion EVER???????.......2006-01-03
Ahhh the comments from some of those California scientist/know-it-alls! What would we be without them? (re: earlier reviews).
Although 'well-organized' is easier in any situation, I got plenty of positive, informative hints from this book, have (as I often do with books I like) bought multiple copies of it and passed them on to folks I thought would benefit as a result, and am about to do so again. Even as a lucky individual, who is rarely sick, has held his teen-age weight and waist right up to present (155/32), learning from the books content has added pleasantly to well-being and well-feeling. I believe Donna Gates has hit at least on some issues right on the head.
A culture, with values like "All you can eat for $2.95 - Unlimited refills" is a sick culture and needs a lot help. And that help does not come in more medication or more handicap parking lots. It comes with a diet more in alignment with "An apple a day keeps the doctor away".
More apples, veggies and other healthy items in our diets would certainly not result in bloated health care costs, overrated doctors and visits to them. The choice is your's alone.
