5 out of 5 stars Good tutorial and well structured.......2007-05-24

I believe this book taught me quite a lot. The tutorial guides you through one project from beginning to end, which also highlights the challenges in the planning phase. It may appear difficult at the beginning (and it is) but Shane explains the contents in an excellent way that makes you want to learn more. The book is definitely for an intermediate to advanced FLASH developer, who have a good grasp of actionscript. If you are new to actionscript this book is definitely NOT for you. Having said that, this book was worth it for me.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand.......2007-05-12

This book does a great job of explaining ActionScript techniques. It seemed like every time a question popped into my head, I found the answer right away in the next paragraph. The author explains things in a way that everyone can understand.

The only problem I had with the book was that the explanations got a little too repetitive sometimes. I think they over-explained things, but I suppose they just wanted to make sure everyone understood it.

4 out of 5 stars Basically Intermediate, Slightly Beyond.......2007-04-19

Add this one to your library, folks!

This book totally lives up to it's title. It is a solid resource for getting things done with Flash. From concept to finshed product, this books walks you through the proper way to accomplish intermediate-level tasks in a straight forward manner. The step-by-step instructions are some of the best I've seen. And I've seen a lot.

It really is best to have some basic knowledge of Flash and to understand the terms and concepts used, but the beginner will also gain a lot from this book. (if they have a glossary nearby and are willing to do some work). The novice, once going through the material, will be a proud intermediate. There also a few advanced techniques touched upon.

For working designers using Flash this is a tremendously useful book. The entire book is a walk-through of building a website that has many features that will come up in design and development: The design process, fonts, integrating your tools, organization and architecture of your project, loading data from text files with LoadVars, formatting text with textFormat class, building slideshows, preloaders, forms, video and audio players, and navigation menus.

And the CD of files and videos are very well-done and extremely helpful.

5 out of 5 stars HOT Books are Hot.......2007-01-04

The Flash 8 Hands-On-Training book is written in a way anyone should be able to comprehend, retain and use the lessons learned to do what they wish with Flash. I have purchased several of the HOT books, and have not been disappointed with any. A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners/Bad for Reference.......2006-11-08

I bought this book because I was going to a fast paced training course and I needed some "prep work" to insure that I didn't get lost in the class. This book is designed with the very basic principles of training, tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you just told them. So yes, it is going to repeat items such as shortcuts and the like. However it is also going to provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to do use some of the advanced features of Flash while also providing that "hand on" approach that us programmers love. When was the last time you read a programming book that didn't have instructions and then felt you could jump right in and program?

Please note that this book is not a replacement for proper training, especially if you wish to really be a wiz at it; however, it will give you the foundation you need to get over the mechanics of using the application.

4 out of 5 stars This Book Is "H.O.T.".......2007-05-06

Shane Rebenschied's Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Beyond the Basics Hands-On-Training (BTB:HOT) is the second book in a small series on teaching would-be developers how to effectively use Macromedia Flash in their web projects.

BTB:HOT is very well written. The author uses very clear instructions and appropriate graphics(screenshots) to illustrate the points being made. It is a very easy read, especially if you are weary of computer programming style books. The HOT series is written as if the instructor is standing beside you and telling you what you need to do.

This books was definitely written for the layman. This book was not written for someone who is looking to take Flash to the next level of professionalism. The book is very short (almost too short), and really doesn't include very much discussion about the possibilities that can happen with a particular project.

After reading this book and working through the examples, I determined that there really isn't anything new in this book that a seasoned web developer couldn't figure out after reading the first book in the series.

To finish, very good book, but just for novices.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-07-22

This book is perfect for the transformation from beginning to intermediate. The tutorials are incredibly thorough plus it guides you through making a whole web site with the most practical functions. I highly recommend this book. I wish they would make more!

5 out of 5 stars Good tutorial book on Flash.......2006-05-17

This is the first book on Flash and this is the first time I am learning Flash MX2004 Pro. So far I have gone through almost a half of the book and I am very pleased with how this book is structured and its CD which contains the project files as I am learning this program with this book. For any beginner, I feel this book will help get you started on learning and using Flash MX2004. I purchased this book's sister edition "Beyound the Basics" so that I can go one step further after I complete this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Intermediate Book, But Only Worth 3 Stars if You Can Program.......2006-03-02

Basically, this is a good book to get you from the initial HOT book on Flash to the more advanced tutorials found on the Macromedia Exchange site. The introduction to LoadVars and LoadMovieClip alone are worth the price of the book.

My only complaint, if you can call it that, would be that if you are coming from a programmer's background, you will skim A LOT of pages. You've got to hand it to the author in how he really takes his time introducing programming to the neophytes, but I found myself actually reading only 1 page out of every 3-6.

If you already know how to program in any language, you could probably find the tutorials online to get by without this book, but the expenditure in time probably wouldn't be worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Written by a good teacher.......2006-01-06

Excellent book. The author has obviously taught classes and adopted a style that can be followed by any type of reader/student. If you are a novice you will have no trouble following each step-by-step lesson and learn the topics covered. When you are finished with the book your skill level will have improved.

If your skills are advanced or intermediate you will be able to get through each lesson quickly and learn another way of accomplishing something. The videos on the CD are good and delve deeper into the topics covered in the book.

One of the main goals of the book is to teach the concept of object oriented programming. As you go through the book you build a web site, or, better, an application that loads the different applications you learn about in the book, all tied together by a navigation section.

The use of winks and jokes may seem inappropriate to some, but it kept things light for me and I even laughed a couple of times.

I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn how to produce Flash applications. You must know the basics of Flash, and you will not learn about tying to databases or using XML or web services. This is why this is the perfect INTERMEDIATE Flash book.

    Book Description

Since its initial publication, Beyond Basic Dog Training has achieved well deserved recognition as an innovative, unique guide to obedience instruction. Obedience authority Diane Bauman's proven training philosophy asserts that the time has come to go beyond training dogs and start teaching them to please us. This has made a vital difference for those who use her method-and for dogs taught by it to succeed in competitive canine sports.

In this new, updated edition, Bauman presents the most current knowledge on canine learning patterns. Believing that dogs learn by trial and error, Bauman provides a novel approach that encourages dogs to learn by removing corrections for incorrect responses. As a result, dogs do not fear failure and are taught to exercise options in a quest for the desired behavior.

Bauman shows you how to become a "thinking handler" who can train the "thinking dog." Her remarkable ability to view training from the dog's perspective translates into an invaluable tool for building effective communication between you and your dog.

The instruction in this authoritative guide is behind Gaines "Superdogs," numerous obedience trial champions, and a host of other canine successes. If you want your dog to be happy, confident stimulated, and secure in the obedience ring, Beyond Basic Dog Training is the book of choice.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Competent but uninspired.......2007-06-29

Beyond Basic Dog Training is a competent, if uninspired, account of Diane Bauman's methods for training dogs to perform Kennel Club obedience routines. The book is a series of short chapters covering most obedience exercises from Novice to Utility, as well as short discussions on training equipment and trialing tips. Due to the limited scope this book will not be especially helpful to the pet owner wishing to teach basic manners and practical obedience, though it could be a useful read for an obedience competitor.

The teaching methods themselves are old fashioned and rather boring. Dogs are pushed into sits, pulled into send aways, ear-pinched into retrieving. There is no discussion of other methods that can be used to achieve these behaviours (luring, shaping, capturing, etc), leaving the reader rather at a loss if the given method does not work for them.

Bauman's catch-phrase is that it is "good to be wrong", which means that a dog should not be corrected in the learning phase of training. Like most good trainers, she believes dogs should only ever be corrected if they are defiant, not if they are confused or frightened. Bauman discusses how to safely fit and use several types of correction collar, and how to determine which collar is best for a certain dog.

Bauman emphasises the importance of praising the dog for good work, but doesn't present a particularly coherent account on how to motivate a dog or utilise his drives. She does suggest using small food tidbits to reward dogs, but does not go into detail about how or when to deliver these. She does not discuss the use of prey drive or toy rewards at all, despite them being exceptionally useful for some dogs. Neither does she explain anything about operant or classical conditioning, or about marker words or bridges.

In conclusion, although I doubt any dog would be harmed by use of these methods, I also doubt that this method will get the best obedience performance out of every dog. Some dogs need more motivation than Ms Bauman provides, or do better with "hands-off" techniques, and this book unfortunately does not cater for the learning styles of these canines. However, it is still worth a read for kennel club obedience competitors, who might well pick up some useful tips.

1 out of 5 stars If you feel that obedience titles are worth hurting your dog, this book is for you!.......2007-05-17

Two days ago, I was extremely excited about receiving this book in the mail. I was lulled by promises that the book would show me how to "become a thinking handler who can train a thinking dog" and how to encourage "dogs to learn by removing corrections for incorrect responses". Now here I sit utterly disappointed in having wasted money on a book that encourages people to pinch their dogs ears and to "use the collar choke approach for dogs who are not responsive to an ear pinch" (p.163 Beyond Basic Dog Training, Bauman). If you're not sure how to do the latter, the book has a picture of a dog being choked for your reference! Wow! This book is very outdated and needs to be modernized to reflect all of the advances that dog training has made in recent years. I have seen many handlers achieve stellar obedience scores through the use of positive training ...looks like I'll be turning to them for advice instead of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best dog training book I've read to date.......2007-01-19

Bauman's book is a no-nonsense approach to obedience training with an eye on competing. She is thorough in her discussions and accurately provides details into the how, why, where and when to create the results that are wanted with training. I found this book to be very complimentary to other positive training books I've previously read. Would recommend this read to anyone who is a novice trainer like myself who wants/needs more information than they are receiving in a class setting. Additionally, I believe it would serve the trainer who must train alone.

2 out of 5 stars complete training pattern but coercion based training.......2007-01-05

When then book originally came out it was quite forward thinking in its methodology. Fortunately for our dogs there has been a quiet revolution in dog training to a less coercive method of training. For example, her method of teaching sit involves pulling up on the collar while pushing on the dog. In short physical discomfort is being created for a command that the dog does not even know. Her methods are based on negative reinforcement. The correct response will make the discomfort vanish. This type of training can be effective if you have the right dog for the stress it will produce and if you the handler have great timing and can always perfectly and rapidly make all pressure vanish when the performance is correct.

5 out of 5 stars Dog training must have.......2006-07-10

This book teaches all aspects of competitive dog training using positive methods. Excellent resource guide for both the experienced and or novice trainer. I have given it to my friends as a gift and they were delighted.

    2 out of 5 stars Shoddy Editing.......2007-05-26

I've had a generally good experience with the Hands on Training series, but I wish I had read a few reviews before purchasing this one. I'm exactly the type of intermediate user that this title is aimed at, and there is plenty to learn from this book. But it is chock full of proofing errors, mistakes that an intermediate or advanced user can probably suss out and compensate for, but that a relative newcomer to DW or CSS could easily be stumped by. Most unforgiveable is the fact that there are errors in the exercise files - alignment and browser display problems, as well as inclusion of files that have already had the exercise steps performed on them - so that in order to to perform the exercise, you have to start at the end, undo all the steps, then perform them. The exercise files are the main reason to buy books in this series, so problems with those files are inexcusable.

Another shortcoming that intermediate users or below should be aware of: the author does a pretty poor job of giving a context and rationale for many of the procedures used in this book-another issue that makes this book a lot more work than it ought to be.

I'd advise anyone thinking of buying this book to look closely at something in the O'Reilly series - maybe the CSS or Website Cookbooks.

    5 out of 5 stars A Literary Classic!.......2007-05-13

This is a great read if you wish to go to sleep late at night. Okay, I am just kidding, but you know what you are getting into if you are buying this book and it delivers the goods! That's all folks...

2 out of 5 stars Some excellent information, but errors (many of them critical) cannot be overlooked.......2007-01-23

I enjoyed this book thoroughly; I very much appreciated how much information Mr. Lowery tried to cover in a relatively small book. He attempts to bring in more advanced (from a beginner's standpoint) CSS techniques, XML, Ajax, and other topics to the discussion. But, there are many critical errors, both in the book and in the exercise files on the CD-ROM. The errata page for the book does try to make amends for the missing files for Exercise 3, but there are many other exercises that are partially completed or have critical errors which make them render improperly after you are done with the exercise. I am sure that some of the errors are on my part, but the fact there are so many prevalent mistakes and missteps is very disconcerting for someone who is just learning. I went through the first lynda.com Dreamweaver 8 book, and learned a lot. Unfortunately, this book was simply not as well edited.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the basics.......2007-01-09

Detail instructions giving for you to follow.Gives you more than the basics of dreamweaver.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Intermediate nor Advanced.......2006-10-24

This book has so many faults! The CD that comes with the book does not work in many browsers. Sometimes the exercise files on the CD are already completed. They don't work either.

I have asked for help twice. The first time I was told the problems I identified would be added to the errata list. The second time I was told that the author would review the whole chapter and get back to me in two days. That was a week ago. Still no answers as to why things do not work!

5 out of 5 stars Being all they can be.......2005-07-29

Like in the first book, "Basic Training," the author and photographer here have a sense for the same kind of soft-core male anatomy shot that makes catalogs from major clothing firms sell so well. There are very stylish and polished black-and-white photographs throughout the pages, not necessarily demonstrating the particular exercises, but in those kinds of poses that range from the high art (a chiseled black man standing against a white background holding up a big gray globe, various angles of stretches and the kind, etc.) to the "we're just having fun" shots of men running across a field or other similar photographs. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with these, and there is nothing overtly pornographic about these photographs, just rather titillating and artistically edging toward to the sexual.

This is not a book that is purchased for the exercises per se, as the workouts and nutrition information and other stuff, while basic and good, are not particularly inspired. The inspiring part is the layout, designs and photographs. There are workouts listed that probably make for decent programs, but they don't really have the promise of turning a mid-30s body like mine into the image of the Greek gods in grayscale that adorn these pages. Still, I do find that I am more "inspired" to work out in the hope, going ever more to the unreachable dream, that my physique might be more like theirs.

This book is less about actual workouts, even in the articles, but more about overall philosophy of well-being. Still, I like having this book, and hope to purchase their second book. Just for the articles, you know.

5 out of 5 stars I find this book very helpful.......2004-12-29

I have read both of Jon Giswold's books...Basic Training and Beyond Basic Training and have found both to be informative and helpful in creating my own fitness plan.

Jon obviously knows a lot about fitness and he explains it in a way that makes it accessible for everyone.

I just read the review from "revolted" and am surprised anyone could get so angry because of a few photos that show well-built young guys. The photos give me inspiration and I don't think they are any more sexual than many of the photos in clothing catalogues. I respect this reader's right to have his opinion that he doesn't like the book, but I don't know why he has to be so mean spirited.

My advice to men who are interested in learning about fitness and/or to the women who want to help get their partner in shape: This book offers a lot of good advice.

5 out of 5 stars Best of It's Kind And The Most Artistic.......2004-12-27

I have to strongly disagree with the apparently homophobic gentleman who wrote that first review who could not get past his fear of the beautiful male bodies in Jon Giswold's BEYOND BASIC TRAINING to reap the rewards of this wonderful bible of health. Jon is one of the best in his field. I know, because I workout with him all the time and I have learned so much. This book puts all of Jon's great and loving knowledge into easy practice for the rest of us to benefit from and it is photographed beautifully by Augustus Butera, who just happens to be one of the busiest and finest photographers in New York. Whether you need to build muscle or just stay fit and healthy, this book is a find. ENJOY the beauty and know that you, too, can be proud of the way you look after incorporating Jon's expert advice into your daily routine.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible [...] Understone Noticed By Everyone I Showed.......2004-12-27

From the moment I opened this book I realized it had a [...]undertone. From picture of naked men soapy in a shower or guys doing things together that make me sick, I knew I had to return this book even if it cost me a ton of money in shipping. I see other reviewers found this book enjoyable, but they seem to be the lady readers, however, I was under the influence this was a book for men. I was simply disgusted from the moment I opened it. The advice was not very helpful and truthfully I think reading a book for women would make me feel more masculine than this nauseating display of male nudity. Some may think I am rating it too hard, but honestly, how many straight guys want to open a book and get a face full of naked men in a shower or the dozens of other equally as unnecessary poses, are you kidding me!?!?! This book is revolting and I recommend you avoid it. Now if your [...] or a woman, you may just enjoy it, but as for real guys, it's just gross!!! Moreover, I asked every relative that was at my house for Christmas, I was given this book as a gift, and they all laughed and said why did you get a [...] man's book?? I was so embarrassed because it was supposed to be a fitness book, if I can't just return it I will just throw it away! I now know what the "Beyond" part in the title means. It just upsets me that Amazon couldn't take the time to list that such graphic pictures were included!

5 out of 5 stars Goes above and beyond.......2004-03-07

I already had a copy of "Basic Training," Jon's first book, and so I picked this one up without hesitation. Whereas "Basic Training" is a good starting point, this book easily picks up where the first left off, taking topics like emotional well-being, diet and the more esoteric topics that guys who want to jump in and get going at the gym are likely to overlook.

Jon gives a good look at some other forms of exercise, including yoga and stretching, as valuable additions to a fitness "repertoire." The book isn't focused entirely on training--thus the title "Beyond Basic Training," and making it much more valuable than any of the countless exercise titles out there.

5 out of 5 stars I want to do inappropriate things to Mr. Rebenschied .......2005-06-22

This title is THAT good. Like another reviewer said, you may find the narration a bit slow, but if you hold down the FF button you can still understand him. If you've gotten through all the beginner stuff, this is a great next step to take.

Again, some people might find it slow, because he does a lot of hand holding through the exercises. However, if you aren't 100% on your ActionScript 2.0 skills yet, it might be just what you need to build your skills as well as your confidence as an AS programmer. That's exactly what it has done for me.

And if you REALLY want to get most out of this, get the "Beyond the Basics" book as well, and take your notes in there as you follow along.
