I was horrified to be buying this book, but thrilled I could on Amazon and not be seen in public. After reading just a few chapters, my attitude toward sex changed. It became clear that with a little effort from me, my husband was more than willing to listen and thrilled to see me change. He was eager to please me and make just that little bit of change in himself as well. (we all know what they will do for a little sex) Her writing is clear, funny at times, and right on target about what to do. This book is a must at a baby shower. It has helped to make my marriage better, which ultimately makes for a happier family.

wow, this author is awesome. i think she is so caring and cool and helpful. however, as a new mom in my 20s, i think this book is not for my generation. a lot of it was written with people born in the 40s, 50s and 60s in mind. people in my generation (born 70s, 80s) who are having kids and have low libido already know a lot about sex, erotica and communication. however there were some good tips in the book. she's a cool lady

I bought this book because I'm a fan of Dr. Raskin's other books, and I love this one too. You really feel like she knows you personally. My favorite chapter is how to talk to your husband about sex, but I also like her suggestions on how to get your libido charged. You don't feel ridiculous because she completely gets what the issues are for mothers. Thank you, thank you!

There is hope for Moms... and Dads!.......2002-04-23

At first glance the title catches one's eye - Great Sex for Moms.
There is a quick glance around to make sure no one is looking as one
picks up the book in the bookstore. That single act of picking up the
book to read the jacket (or ordering it from Amazon.com)is a primary
step in doing what this book advocates. Dr. Raskin constructs her
book around intentionality. Instead of simply accepting the status
quo, the reader is challenged to take steps which will bring a great
sex life - in spite of kids! In these pages it becomes apparent that
the physician part of Raskin has merged with the romantic and mother
sides of her being. She speaks as one with incredible integrity. Her
writing is informed by her mind, heart, and experience. What can beat
that?

Humor is coupled with very specific and helpful suggestions
about re-kindling a healthy, fulfilling sex life. While the subject
matter is serious, there is a playfulness that creates a comfort level
for the reader. At one point Raskin writes, "...I hope my mother and
children never read this chapter..." - Raskin knows her readers well.

Great Sex for Moms is a book for Dads too! If read as a couple,
the conversations which ensue will guarantee a better sex life!

As a Relationship Coach, I suggest that all my clients purchase this book and keep reading it over and over until it truly sinks in. Whether you are happily married, in a troubled relationship, or single looking for a mate, reading this book is a MUST! I agree with another customer's review that you can throw away the rest of the relationship books in your library and keep this one close at hand. The Passion Trap is the genesis, IMO, where all relationships start failing. Other books (and I've read many) on relationships may hone in on this or that issue and offer advice for remedies, but this book starts at the bedrock level of troubled relationships.

It is almost spooky how this dynamic works in all relationships. One of the partners is always more invested than the other which keeps the relationship out of balance . . . one wanting more, one wanting to run.

Read The Passion Trap, and begin to recognize how this dynamic is working in your relationship . . . before it's too late. :)

Brilliant book.......2006-03-13

In my library, I have about 400 books on psychology of relationships. I didn't expect this book to add much more to what I already had, or knew. Was I wrong!

This book is the best analysis of the self-defeating dynamics that destroy love relationships -- and delivered in such an accessible, well-written mannner that one cannot put it down. I stayed up two nights in a row reading it until 4 a.m., and wished I didn't have to go to sleep at all.

How I wish I came across this book a long time ago. As earlier reviewers stated, this should be required reading in high school (though this book is for all ages) -- it would save people so much heart-ache, depression, and divorces, if they understood ahead of time what undermines relationships between love partners.

The book is at its best when it descibes power imbalances that occur between people; it gets a little weaker later on when the authour tries to categorize people by giving them labels (e,g, "Loner", "Punisher", etc.) Real life can be a little more complicated than that (i.e., some people combine many characteristics, and are too complex to fit in just one category). But that didn't diminish my total admiration for this book.

I may get rid of some of my other books in the future to make room for new ones, but the Passion Trap will stay with me forever. I will be sharing it with my grandchildren if I have any...

Read This Before It's Too Late.......2005-02-22

A year ago this book could have helped avoid the breakup we just experienced. It might not have avoided the split, but at least we both would have exerted all efforts to try to understand the issues and reach a mutual decision rather than have it all fall on one to make the decision.

The book is brilliant. I could not put it down. The cases were effective in linking theory with life and it was almost too easy to identify with the roles. Throw away the so-called self-help books that promise reconciliation and read this book at the first sign of relationship troubles. Regardless of the outcome, you both will find a great sense of peace and resolve for having applied the techniques Dr. Dellis decribes.

Amazing Insight Into Relationship Dynamics.......2002-03-16

A friend loaned me his book when I was in a troubled relationship. I learned more about the dynamics of relationships from this book than I ever could have in practice. In fact, I learned so much from it, I just had to buy it. I have read and re-read my own book many many times and have loaned it to most of my friends. It's too bad this book is out of print. I would recommend anyone buy it, regardless of the price.

If you read this book,your life will never be the same.True insight to relationships and problems are hard to come by,and this one just hit the mark.

It is really a terrific book.Too bad I read it after it was a little bit too late to know what was going on in my marriage of 20 years.I just did not understand what hit us,and the problem is I think there is still a chance of renewal.

I think the book should be updated,because if it happens like in my case,then what can you do about it.Maybe a consultation with Dr.Delis might be helpful.Thank you.

John Gray uses real, time-tested methods to greatly enhance sex for couples. By detailing the different needs of men and women during sex, you learn to break your selfish tendencies and do the right thing - focus on giving pleasure to your spouse. This will ultimately enhance your sex experience, and this will follow through to all facets of your relationship, both in and out of the bedroom. His ideas are not at all unpleasant or distasteful. I read this book previously when I got it from the library. I couldn't believe how right the book is. It gives a lot of insight to the understanding of the female and male sexuality, and helps one to understand it all. I have been reading this book out loud to my BF, who now worships Dr. Gray as it should be titled, "Why women should give men sex all the time".

Dr. Gray actually lists why we should give our man a quickie when we really don't want to, don't have time or are tired. He even says we should give a hand job when we have a bad headache!!! Men, if your woman has a headache, run her a warm bubble bath, light some candles, give her a massage and you'll increase your chances of getting some!

He also states that at certain times of the month many women don't feel the need to have an orgasm. I know LOTS of women and none of them will tell you orgasms are not important! Yes, sometime I will give my man a quickie and not worry about my orgasm, but that is totally up to me, NOT DR. GRAY.

He also states it's ok to look at other women in front of us as long as our men tell us they love us. Gee, not enough beautiful women on TV, billboards and magazines to look at when we're not around? I don't drool over other men when my man is around because I RESPECT him. If more couples respected each other they would have less trouble.

He has some good tips like men need to spend more time on foreplay, complimenting your woman, but I am on page 88 out of 206 and it has been overwhelmingly biased toward giving men what they want all the time and apparently at all costs.

Well intentioned advice for men; women not included........2006-08-19

Dr. Gray must be a wonderful lover. As a woman I read his hints and suggestions for a man's love making technique and marvel at his insight. I truly could not have imagined a man so aware of what a woman really wants in the bedroom. However there are no corresponding ideas for a woman geared to improviing her skills as a lover. By maintaining a position of gallant "ladies first" mentality he, in truth, is demeaning the power of women's sexuality.

There is much to be gained by men reading this book. Attitudes can improve, skill levels can rise and even the articulation of loving feelings can be created and/or grow with the help of this book's suggestions. Women are unfortunately reduced to being receipients of, not participants in, in bedroom activity.

new age twaddle.......2007-06-21

I read some of this book, a real study in wishful thinking. One of the reviewers mentioned that the book is 'not new age'. Hmm ... begs the question, what his new age, considering the first page starts off with:

"The great unveiling is approaching, a time when the power structures of the world begin to crumble and people of the heart sing out a new truth. .... [E]ach of you plays a part in bringing forth the new dawn."

If it reads like new age, smells like new age and dances like new age --- it IS new age. In this case, Christian new age.

There is no compelling empirical evidence to suggest that human or global history is on the brink of any significant cultural or biological watershed. If anything it looks like humanity is poised for extinction. And that's not a bad thing.

I really do not understand this desperate urge to save the human race, which has arguably caused more damage to the planet than any other species ever has or ever could. If you want to save the planet, let the human race die off. If you want to save humans and the planet, you have your work cut out for you and even if hundreds of thousands of new-agers contemplate a better future, it is highly unlikely to change the course the human race has set for itself over the last century.

A Really Nice Surprise.......2007-06-04

I began reading this book expecting to find another goddess spirituality book telling us about how we need to go back to the "good old days" when women ruled the world, when we were one with nature in idyllic Roussean bliss, and how the presence of male energy on the planet should be eradicated so that women can create a perfect paradise - just like they once used to.

What I found was something else altogether - a detailed and balanced account of the historical, cultural and philosophical development leading to our current culture. While she uses the metaphor of the chakra system to trace this development, it is perfectly syncronous with Spiral Dynamics and other sophisticated models of human development. In other words, there is a total absence of magical, New Age superstition and a great presence of balance, perspective and wisdom.

The book is a clarion call to action, to understand the context of our emergence, appreciate the gravity of our current situation and take total responsibility for it on the level of our personal lives. This is all done without guilt tripping or demonizing any aspect of our development, while not denying much of its brutality.

Having studied both Ken Wilber's and Don Beck's work, I find this book in perfect alignment and the author another in a growing chorus of voices urging us to evolve at the level of consciousness in service of the entire race.

Elegantly written, full of heart and perspective, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand why we're where we're at and what the next step must be.

An Invitation to Kindom........2006-11-08

Waking the Global Heart creates an understandable picture of cultural evolution. More importantly it creates a hope for what humanity can yet become, if we can begin to awaken to what is possible instead of living with what we have come to accept. As a United Methodist pastor, I found Judith's anaylsis of Christian history to be especially helpful for revealing the process of adjusting Christianity to fit political purposes of the Roman Empire. While Judith's summary of this history could not possibly cover all the nuances of that history, her approach reminds us that the heart message Jesus proclaimed and lived was co-opted by the love of power that dominated that time and this. From the perspective of Jesus message of the heart (the power of love), I have long struggled with the use of the word "kingdom"of God to describe Jesus' goal. While Jesus' call is clearly to create a world based on God's love, "kingdom" carries too much of the "love of power" model. I especially appreciated Judith's coining of the word, "kindom" to describe the goal of social evolution. Waking the Global Heart gives us an excellent model as to what the world can be, if we can move past doctrine to discover unity of spirit in the image of the heart chakra. Dana Wimmer

A roadmap for what humanity needs to JUST DO! .......2006-09-24

WAKING THE GLOBAL HEART, will be kept were I can refer to it often. Anodea Judith has touched all the right nerves to awaken humanity's sleeping giant. As J. Krishnamurti put it, to produce "A radical mutation of the mind." She describes the human condition as an adolescent emerging with the crushing awareness of adult choices. Like a teen age girl staring in disbelief at the drug store pregnancy test that signals a personal Tsunami, a 9/11 and a New Orleans, humanity stands in the postmodern era with no MAPS and no consensus. Like a deer frozen in the headlights, we trouble in disbelief at the chaos we see rushing at us with hurricane speed. Anodea's book is a welcome new MAP, and her words ring true as I recognize the truth of her message: "Humanity's Rite of Passage from THE LOVE OF POWER to the POWER OF LOVE." At first glance her three-part index seems to over simplify the world problematique, but the depth of this luminary volume soon changes everything. One realizes, even in the preface, when she describes her love of untangling strings in her mother's kitchen drawer, that Anodea manifested early the tenacity and the patience needed to create this master work. Thank God she had the perseverance and the chutzpah to write this book! It is a handbook for navigating the transformations urgently needed to heal a world in crisis. Anodea draws frequently from some of my favorite visionaries, Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Dr. Fritjof Capra, and Ken Wilber. Her depth of understanding spans the ancient wisdom, years of experience as a therapist soothing pains of the soul, and the history of humanity's rise to walk on the moon where we saw island earth as the only home we have. Read it once, read it twice, and then take my advice and simplify your Christmas shopping. Keep it close at hand as you struggle to come of age in the generation needed to save the world from ourselves. Anodea's book reminds me of the famous line from Walt Kelly's cartoon character POGO, "we have met the enemy and he is us." She makes it clear in her passionate hope, "Someday we will be the ancestors that I pray will be remembered with gratitude rather than resentment." and "...the current crisis will call forth global cooperation like nothing ever has before." I pray she is right! If she is it will be because she and thousands like her with compassion, love, and a noble spirit inspired us all to create the world our children's children can love in peace and joy.

The time is NOW for co-hearts in the kin-dom to ACT!.......2006-09-12

Anodea Judith is a noted teacher and author on the subject of the ancient concept of the chakras. The chakras correspond to various energy centers of the human anatomy and map to various levels of consciousness and stages of development.

Anodea has taken the same chakra system and applied it to the history of mankind's social, political, religious, and technological development over the past 30,000 years. She has mapped this history against various chakras chronologically demonstrating man's social evolution from the lowest chakra (Earth) to the highest (Spiritual) chakra.

Ms. Judith's thesis is that humankind is in the process of an evolutionary transformation, presently in a state of adolescence and entering a challenging time - the rite of passage - moving to adulthood, where the "higher" chakras, in particular the Heart chakra, will come to dominate mankind's future evolution of political, social, economic, and spiritual systems.

Her conclusions are unapologetically optimistic in citing that there is in-fact a groundswell of individual action towards the attitudes and behaviors necessary to reverse the chaos and conflict endemic in the world today. Indeed, today's chaos is seen as symptomatic of mankind's adolescence and necessary transition to adulthood.

That the jury is still out as to whether we make this transition before we destroy ourselves and/or the planet's ecosystem is clearly acknowledged, but the conclusions overall are highly optimistic that the long-term outcome will be positive. The rite of passage may be rather unpleasant however!.

The book is eminently readable and the various mappings of the chakras to human history are helpfully summarized in numerous charts and tables.

For me, the first three chapters (part one) and the conclusions in part three were by far the most powerful portions of the text. The actual chronological mapping of human history to the chakras was intriguing and indeed the core of the thesis being advanced. However, the passion and intensity of Anodea's arguments come through loud and clear in the first and third parts.

Regardless of whether one is convinced that the mapping of the chakras to historical time periods is firm evidence of an inevitable path of human evolution or a convenient model for the purposes of advancing the conclusions is, I believe, less critical than the heartfelt plea that it is getting very, very, late in the game and that "we", the human species, have little time to clean up our act.

That a significant "transformation" is about the only thing that will save the human species seems abundantly clear to most interested observers. Whether framed in the model of the chakras and the transformation to "species adulthood" or some other form, the central thesis is really that things had better happen fast. Utilizing the chakras, and in particular the Heart chakra, provides a compelling set of guideposts with regard to the direction and types of changes that must occur.

Now from a, "glass half-full, glass half-empty", perspective one is left wondering whether this book and many others like it, are desperate attempts to see light at the end of the tunnel - where there is none - or whether humanity really has the will to manifest the enormous transformation that the author believes is essential. The analytical model used - the chakras - indicates that it is not only desirable, but an inevitable result of an evolutionary process. Let us hope she is right!

Once again, the "think globally, act locally" idea is presented. This book may greatly assist those who are concerned, but immobilized at present, find the will, energy, and determination to organize and act decisively in order to be a part of the essential transformation.

Regained Passion.......2004-05-19

I couldn't stop reading these passionate writings from great and unknown poets who stirred rhythms in me as I read the flavorful expressions of passions & love for that special someone on a personal level. With positive descriptions of Blacks loving as only real love can be expressed without barriers. I enjoyed & was touched while reading the love letters.

I accidentally found "A Rock Against The Wind" in the Phoenix, AZ library when while searching for Black love poems. This book is a treasure.
Where has this book been? Are there any other group writings like this?

You wait for the phone to ring. That's your life, waiting. You never know when he'll call, so you leave your home as little as possible. Hair dryers and vacuum cleaners make noise that could drown out a ringing phone; you use them sparingly. And then, without warning, there's the voice you crave --- he can be free for a few hours without his wife getting curious.

In a panic, you bathe. Frantically clean your home. File your nails so there's no chance you'll leave a mark on him. Lay out drinks, ice, his favorite snack. And then the door opens and your life begins. You barely speak, this isn't that kind of relationship. Later, he looks at his watch. You sigh. He showers, dresses. A final touch, and he's gone. And your life once again turns to waiting.

That's a woman's story. (It's the rare man whose life revolves around an unavailable woman who has trouble finding a moment to call and has an even harder time arranging a rendezvous.) Indeed, it's Annie Ernaux's story --- a lightly fictionalized account of a two-year affair she had with a married Eastern European diplomat. The whole story takes just 64 pages. And nothing really happens; it's mostly waiting. But the waiting is so acutely observed that in France --- Ernaux lives in a suburb of Paris --- 'Simple Passion' was the #1 bestseller for 8 months, with more than 400,000 copies sold.

The appeal of the book is, if you will, how manly it is. How matter-of-fact. Writing, Ernaux tells us at the start of the novel, should be like sex. That is, there should be "a feeling of anxiety and stupefaction. a suspension of moral judgment." So you won't get any speculation about his feelings. Or if he'll leave his wife. No, this affair is about sex. It's about "lying in bed with that man in the middle of the afternoon."

The man, like the woman, is nameless. He's 38. He likes "Yves Saint-Laurent suits, Cerruti ties and powerful cars." He watches bad TV. He drinks. But these preferences hardly matter. For the narrator knows at the beginning of the affair something that most woman only learn at the end: "The man we love is a complete stranger." As is, perhaps, the woman. Something happens at the end of the book --- nothing dramatic, like a murder or even a confrontation, but I don't want to spoil the experience for you --- and we're forced to consider her anew.

Who is Annie Ernaux? You've probably never heard of her, but she's one of the biggest names in French fiction. Born in 1940, she grew up in a small town. She became a literature teacher in Paris. And, from her first book to her most recent, she had her style down pat: short, autobiographical books, so honestly told you feel she's scraping off skin with every word. She never presents herself as a victim or a hero; she just is. Her books win prizes. And, though they're chilly, they sell. Her humanity --- that honest expression of desire and weakness --- only looks simple. It's a bitch to write.

Ernaux says that passion is the luxury of adults. I think I understand what she means: It's time out of time, a shared secret, a deep and wordless acknowledgment of need and a gloriously hot way of satisfying that need. I think that's why women, in particular, gravitate to Ernaux's short, disturbing books --- they know they're real. How? Because, at one point or another, they've been that woman looking at her phone, praying for it to ring.

A fascinating look into the mind of an obsessive lover........2003-04-10

SIMPLE PASSION is a woman's story of her affair with a married man. It is a short book which I read in one sitting. What makes the story special is that it only tells what her life is like when she is not with him. From the time he left her side until the next time she saw him she says she did nothing else but wait for him. She describes in detail her obsessive thinking about her lover. So although she never describes her time with him, all her time away from him is spent thinking about him, planning her next meeting with him, waiting for him to call, fantasizing about him. As she goes about her daily life, her mind never strays from him. It is as compelling a story as her obsession was to her.

My favorite book. It honestly explores the effects of passion, and does so with total economy.
It is both dramatic and zenlike at the same time.
Most writers believe in the "show don't tell" aproach, but only the best writers, most of them being in my opinion, French, have a way of telling that exceeds the showing. Ernaux, like Gide and Duras, offers a very processed view of a relationship which becomes an intellectual experience --despite it revolving around a physical love affair. Ernaux transportes her readers, not necessarily into the moments, but into the DRAMA of them --getting us inside this woman's mind and body and feeling the pain and exstacy of the many stages of obsession.
While reading this book, I often had to pause and just sigh. And when I completed this slim novel, just a couple hours later (I really took my time), I began it again.

Passion Put Simply, but Beautifully.......2001-12-12

My relationship to this book became very intimate after translating it from French to English for a college course. I really appreciated the subtlties of language that Ernaux mastered in Passion Simple. The French is marvelous, and the subject itself, passion/obsession, is pertinent. Most people reading this book are quick to judge the narrator's attitudes and actions. She, herself, is unwilling to do so in this book. Instead, she simply relays the facts. It is amazing how well she is able to do this so beautifully.

AN ANTHILL OF PASSIONS.......2001-07-18

One review on the cover of this book says it is "a monument to passions". I believe it is an inconsequential anthill. This tiny little book, is in actuality simply an overpriced pamphlet. It consists of 64 pages but in large print and much doublespacing and footnotes at the bottom of some pages. Having just gone through the painful experience of wading through the 827 page Underworld by Don Delillo I decided to pick up this little book. It was a bad choice. There is nothing redeemable about the boring lackluster prose. The subject of love has been rhapsodied on for thousands of years and this boring little assemblage of pages adds nothing to its mystery. If anything, it cheapens it. With its emotionless tone, it resembles the side of a cereal box. Actually, the cereal box would be more entertaining. Ernaux could have minimalized her book even further by limiting it to two sentences: "Woman loves married man. Has affair with him that ends." Actually, these lines are good representatives of the prose style in Simple Passion. I could go on but then the review would be longer than the book.

I mean there are dozens of little spell books out there, and while I am not a practicing witch (even less wiccan) and thus cannot comment on spells (thou they do seem simple and cheeky), I KNOW what appeals to my sense of humor and life philosophy. In this book I appreciate the way the author recommended invoking the power of different deities (in my case a nymph) for each horoscope sign. sweet and humorous.

Being new to the craft, this really confused me. To me alot of the spells seemed to be on the edge of taking anothers free will.

Great books for different Witches.......2002-11-13

I have not bought any of these books but have graced alot of Deborah Grays books and the book store and I think they are great. Even though I am more from a Wiccan background sometimes different spells are needed at different times and its really up to each individual to use their judgement when it comes to casting gray area spells. No I do not agree with every spell she may represent and if so then I won't do it. But alot of her spells are very ethical and fun as I have read quite a few of them. There have been spells in alot of strictly "wicca" books that I don't care for. To each is his/her own!

I was skeptical about reading yet another book about how great football is and has been. I confess Vasquez' knowledge about a team he loves is impressive. His stories from his childhood mingled with his up-to-date information on the Packers is a good combination. This book is definitely more for a football fan, but I could see its appeal to a family man, too, since there are so many references to his family in it.
