If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers' Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book.

With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex?? Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.

The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: first, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, second, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Its simple recipes are each meant to benefit a certain body system, such as Tomato Bruschetta, packed with the antioxidant lycopene, which has been proven to boost immunity. --Erica Jorgensen

Book Description

Between your full-length mirror and high-school biology class, you probably think you know a lot about the human body. While it's true that we live in an age when we're as obsessed with our bodies as we are with celebrity hairstyles, the reality is that most of us know very little about what chugs, churns, and thumps throughout this miraculous, scientific, and artistic system of anatomy. Yes, you've owned your skin-covered shell for decades, but you probably know more about your cell-phone plan than you do about your own body. When it comes to your longevity and quality of life, understanding your internal systems gives you the power, authority, and ability to live a healthier, younger, and better life.

You: The Owner's Manual challenges your preconceived notions about how the human body works and ages, then takes you on a tour through all of the highways, back roads, and landmarks inside of you. After taking a quiz that tests your body of knowledge, you'll learn about all of your blood-pumping, food-digesting, and keys-remembering systems and organs.

Just as important, you'll get the facts and advice you need to keep your body running long and strong. You'll find out how diseases start and how they affect your body -- as well as advice on how to prevent and beat conditions that threaten your quality of life. Complete with exercise tips, nutritional guidelines, simple lifestyle changes, and alternative approaches, You: The Owner's Manual gives you an easy, comprehensive, and life-changing how-to plan for fending off the gremlins of aging. To top it off, you'll also get the great-tasting and calorie-saving Owner's Manual Diet -- a thirty-recipe eating plan that's designed with only one goal in mind: to help you live a younger life.

Welcome to your body. Why don't you come on in and take a look around?

5 out of 5 stars Good education and self-care manual........2007-06-28

In short, just a very informative book that is successful in achieving several goals. For one, it educates the reader in the inner workings of the human body. It does this quite entertainingly through trivia, facts, and interesting pictures (for instance the authors use a lot of elves). Additionally, the book also gives you many helpful tips on self-care and how to keep your body running smoother. While there is a lot information, I really would like to have seen a reference section at the end of the book. All in all though, it's a pretty informative and amusing read that should enhance the well-being of many. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for readers who might need more specific info on shoulder pain and rotator cuff self-care.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource .......2007-06-28

I believe anyone should consult their physician prior to following the advice laid out in this book. Only you and your physician can really be sure what's in this book will work for you. However, I still view this as a must buy for the general public. It is very informative, full of great advice, and is an easy read. This book is full of great advice on just about every aspect of your body. A great book to have around the house, and one that could change your life for the better.

5 out of 5 stars Great chance to meet Dr. Oz: He really knows what he's talking about.......2007-06-19

I've read this book and it has really changed my outlook on my body. You really need to get to know how your system works in order to get the best from it. Through this book, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen helped to give me a thorough understanding of the human body. I am a huge fan of their work and am so excited to be attending one of their five special health care workshops this summer. These workshops will offer education on the human body and better weight and health management. The name if the tour is "It's all about you" and that's the frame of mind I'm in right now. I am ready to put myself and my health at the center of my life. I hope you can join me in getting to learn from and possibly meet Dr. Oz.

5 out of 5 stars You :The Owners Manual CD.......2007-06-01

I really like Dr Oz, and his TV show is very informative. I like listening to him talk rather than read the book. I can listen to it @ work or in my car. Everything is in "layman's terms"

5 out of 5 stars great stuff, esp. on stress.......2007-05-26

I found this book very useful for my personal productivity consulting, mainly their section on stress. In particular, the authors' ideas on Important But Manageable events (IBMs) and Nagging Unfinished Tasks (NUTs) were fascinating, with the latter being what adds most to the aging.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-06-13

I'VE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH INFORMATION CRAMMED INTO ONE BOOK!

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT EXPECT TO RECEIVE WHAT YOUR ARE PROMISED FOR YOUR PURCHASE.......2007-01-19

I purchased this book NEW and in good faith & because it was the title required for my anatomy class. (from the college bookstore)
The company NEVER made good on their promise to allow me access to use their website. They provided the professor an invalid access code.
I can only have access if I send them MORE money to purchase access.
I ALREADY GAVE THEM 150+ for the NEW text, lab manual, cd's & entry into their website. It feels like I am being SCAMMED although I am pretty sure this is not their intention.
I am 1/3 of the way done w/the book & class & DISSAPPOINTED W/MY PURCHASE.
I HOPE TEACHERS FIND AN ALTERNATIVE BOOK TO REQUIRE FOR A&P CLASS.

1 out of 5 stars if you have to throw away $150..........2006-07-25

If you actually buy this book you're paying for the illustrations. Don't waste your time actually reading it, the presentation of the material is ponderous and completely unimaginative. The chapter on immunology is one of the worst I've seen anywhere.

The COVER of the book speaks volumes for its content. I'd be afraid to be seen in public with it.

3 out of 5 stars X and Y chromosomes.......2006-05-16

A more serious omission is the absense of the x chromosome from the glossary though that y is there, unconsciously reinforcing that men are incomplete females? Males come equipped with beefed up sixpacks whereas the woman look like demure little housewives. Artists have tried to depict other races but the gender representation is pathetic. A heterosexist pro-male interpretation of human sexuality is found throughout the book, which can be annoying. Some of the comments obviously written with students in mind are patronizing. The layout is repetitious and and at times quite unstimulating. The best detail was why a chicken breast is white considering its a muscle.

3 out of 5 stars laughable omission.......2005-12-14

How can this really be an Anatomy and Physiology textbook written by a Phd? There is not one picture or drawing of a male foreskin (prepuce). One does not have to wonder why the medical community is so ill prepared to deal with a normal male body.

4 out of 5 stars good condition-- a bit long for delivery.......2006-11-04

the delivery was a bit slow but the book was in perfect condition.

4 out of 5 stars Nice and Well Organized Book. .......2005-08-10

I had this book for about two semesters, in college by the way. The first semester I dropped it and finally the second semester I got a B. Interesting hm? Anyhow, the book contains a large amount of information including very nice diagrams and photographs and has vastly improved in my opinion from the early first few editions. What makes this book extremely informative is the fact that it is pretty well organized and set up including indexing and clear contents listing. 16 chapters starting slowly from the basics of the human body, its relations to chemistry, cells and tissues, and finally going more in depth by digging deep into the organ systems and the human anatomy.

The diagrams are clearly listed, but of course I've seen a few errors. The information is just so much. Unless you are crazy about this, I doubt you'll remember much without reviewing it over and over continuously on a weekly if not daily bases. Almost each part in the diagram is listed out on the same page or a few pages back and forth to give the reader a more precise knowledge if the reader intends to know more of what the diagram/photo represents part for part.

The information is simply mind blowing and pretty exhausting to remember. Most readers of this and other anatomy/medical/etc related books would sooner or later ask themselves "who the heck would make up all these silly names and expect us to memorize it?!" The information is a little too compact for me and this is the only problem I have with this book, the simple fact that its a lot to comprehend and doesn't seem very intended in my Physiology and Anatomy basics class. Like always, mix other text books with this one if you intend to get everything out of this subject. No one book is perfect. Otherwise, its a decent book overall.

3 out of 5 stars Tolerable.......2003-08-05

This book has some useful diagrams and illustrations. It's easy to read, but seems a bit too simplified at times. Also, I think the editors were a bit lax on the writing, personally. The CD quizes are helpful for review.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and highly understandable textbook.......2003-05-28

This book filled with great informative pictures and information that makes any college A and P student's life a lot easier. I used this book for anatomy and physiology class I and II. The book is easy to read and it is a powersource of knowledge. The book is not tedious nor boring to read. In fact, it is quite interesting and was a pleasure studying from. Book Description

The eleventh edition of Principles of Anatomy and Physiology marks a new milestone in the publication of the phenomenally successful Principles of Anatomy and Physiology. Bryan Derrickson of Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida joins Jerry Tortora as a co-author, bringing his background and expertise in physiology in balance with Jerry's focus on anatomy. The authors have maintained in the text the superb balance between structure and function and continue to emphasize the correlations between normal physiology and pathophysiology, normal anatomy and pathology, and homeostasis and homeostatic imbalances. The acclaimed illustration program is now even better thanks to the input of hundreds of professors and students and the re-development of many of the figures depicting the toughest topics for students to grasp. The eleventh edition now fully integrates this exceptional text with a host of innovative electronic media, setting the standard once again for a rewarding and successful classroom experience for both students and instructors.

4 out of 5 stars Great text for the beginning of your medical course.......2007-02-24

This text really is a fantastic resource for someone beginning studies in medicine or medicine-related fields. Clear, precise illustrations, with the right amount of detail for the first year of a course, enable quick learning of the basic principles of structure and function. It is also written very well, set out sensibly, and provides clinical correlations to remind the student how the principles they are learning relate to clinical situations. Highly recommended.

this book is awsome it has everything cover for every body system.., its very well explained, has great pictures, great diagrams, great color for diferent parts of the book, divisions, quizes, questions ... its a super book mainly for understanding simple concepts that in other books are very bad explained or with a lot of text.. This book explains the important stuff not with a lot of details as other books you will understand quickly.... Excellent for medschool, i use it for a first reading on the subject and then after understandig the subject and having an idea of it. I read other physiology book and add stuff that didn't mentioned to my notes.

Trust me buy it and you will love it... also has extra information thats is usefull in ABP classes...

5 out of 5 stars Best Anatomy and Physiology Textbook.......2006-06-16

I used the third edition of this textbook when I was enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology I and II in college twenty three years ago. It is still used by the college I attended. The present edition (11th edition) which I purchased is the number one Anatomy and Physiology textbook. It explains every anatomical term and concept very well. The artwork is fabulous in showing the Anatomy and different Physiological processes. It is the best Anatomy and Physiology textbook for a two semester Anatomy and Physiology course.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-05-11

I obtained this as it was a required text for my uni course - it is as user friendly though as it is authoritative. Well illustrated and clearly written. A very good text.

There is very little verbiage on the systems or structures making it almost impossible to pass Gross Anatomy with this book alone. There are a lot of alternative anatomy atlas' on the market, but you wont go wrong with this one!

4 out of 5 stars Detailed pictures, great for reference.......2007-05-23

It's a great book but after a while i got tired of it not having any text. I checked out Gray's Anatomy for Students at my library and I'm definitely going to purchase it soon, sadly ... I have sold this book already, if you're like me and need more than just visuals, get the best of both worlds with Gray's Anatomy for Students.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2007-03-23

Netter definitely makes anatomy as well as a bit of radiology easier to visualize and remember with his colorful pictures, diagrams, and radiological scans. It is organized very well. May not have enough detail for your tests sometimes, but you can easily find 90% of the things you need to know in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Netter's Anatomy book is AWESOME!.......2007-03-10

I absolute love the large schematics in this atlas. If you are the sort of individual that loves seeing the bigger picture all on one page with all the details intact, this is the atlas for you!

5 out of 5 stars Great Artistry.......2007-03-08

Simply very useful. The graphic is incredible and it presents human anatomy in a way that is very visual and from many angles of the bodies.

3 out of 5 stars This books tries to be many things.......2007-06-11

TGB has been around for several editions, helping massage therapists learn anatomy & kinesiology fundamentals. Credit is due. Its spiral binding, nice indices on the inside front & back covers, overall organization and "fun factoids" make the book usable. No wonder its considered by many a classic.

It doesn't, however, seem to be getting any better, while other books are offering more rigor, better images, and more accurate anatomical references. It has value as it includes text, tables and drawings at a reasonable price.

There are several flaws with this book, however.

First of all, the pictures are two-color -- in a dull reddish brown hue along with black -- and while they sometimes hold some detail, they are not vibrant, or visually interesting. Clearly it is not fair to compare TGB with full color human atlases that cost double and don't include the text, so you get what you pay for.

I also take issue with it more than a few times in its accuracy. For example, the TGB's primary method of palpating the quadratus lumborum muscle is with the client prone and trying to go through the posterior superficial musclulature (latissimus dorsi, iliocostalis lumborum, abdominals, etc.). This approach is likely to frustrate the beginning practitioner and prevent the opportunity to palpate one of the most critical muscles associated with low back pain. If therapists are not able to feel something, they are not likely to try treating it. This is unfortunate. Sidelying is recommended as the lateral muscle fibers of QL are readily accessible, and provides a superior presentation for stretching the QL and related muscle & fascia.

Another example is the description for the common attachments of teres major and latissimus dorsi: "Crest of the lesser tubercle of the humerus." This sounds like we're adding more "rotator cuff" muscles, eh? The attachment I have found consistently in leading anatomy texts is either the "lip of the bicepital groove" or the "lip of the inter-tubercular groove."

The TGB is consistent; they identify the attachment for pectoralis major as the "crest of the greater tubercle," another misleading reference making it seem that the rotator cuff group has seven, not four muscles.

These are a few. There are more.

As an alternative, Muscolino's texts are more expensive, but superior.

So, yes, the TGB is a "good value," but only if you don't mind drab visuals and misleading text.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction and Fabulous Reference.......2007-06-04

The third ed. was the textbook for my first class in massage therapy school. I wish the physiology book we had used in the next class was as well presented as Trail Guide and it's student handbook are. Illustrations are fabulous without being gorey or triggering weak stomachs. I'm going to use it in our homeschooling as well!!

5 out of 5 stars Trail Guide to the Body.......2007-01-11

I am using this book to study for another certification in pilates. It is a recommended reading for the course I am about to take. It is probably one of the best anatomy books I have used.

5 out of 5 stars Great anatomy book!!!.......2006-07-19

I used this book while studying to be a physical therapist assistant. I wish I had found it sooner!!! It's fabulous. I provides a detailed description of how to find muscles, bones, etc. This is better than any other book I have used for this purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Never thought it could get better, but it DID ..........2006-02-23

I received the 2nd ed. of this book in massage school.

I purchased the 3rd ed. to study for my National test.

WOW! I truly did not think this book could have gotten any better, but it DID! It shows all different views of muscles, muscle groups, bones, boney landmarks, how to find boney landmarks to find muscles, latin/greek roots of the words, study hints, remembering devices, WONDERFUL illustrations!

I also purchased the Student Workbook - which is an ENTIRELY new text with this edition - and it has a lot of different ways to test yourself to prepare for tests.

If you need to know ANYTHING relating to the muscles/bones of the body, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! Don't let the cost fool you ... it is NOT overpriced. I used to think it was (when I found out how much it was by itself - my 2nd ed. was included with my tuition at school), until I bought this new edition.

They added an obscene amount of new pages, and updated their illustrations to make them even EASIER to understand.

If you have any doubts about this book, log on to the publishers website discoverybooks . com - there are excerpts, downloadable pages, etc.

    Hope this helps.

This book is excellent as a textbook for those students studying Human Anatomy and the the systems in the human body. It give a very colorful presentation in terms of pictures and figures. Add a star if you are a student in this field.

5 out of 5 stars They got it right with this one..........2006-09-30

This book is a fabulous learning tool. The authors really seem to understand what parts need detailed explanation and the information is presented in a way that a student can grasp it easily.

I am a student of A&P 1 and have a high A in class because of the quality of the info in the book (as a supplement to lecture, of course).

4 out of 5 stars Great overall perspective.......2006-08-31

Although our professor barely used the book for class, this book was very well laid out, starts off at a good pace and is easy to understand. I especially enjoyed the case studies in real life anatomy problems and real world applications of what we learned. The only part I didn't like is the author's prolouge, which seemed a little inflated and overzealous?

    Book Description

Anatomy of Movement presents a dynamic, integrated approach to the study of the physical structures of the musculoskeletal system and their functional relationship to the movements of the human body.

In clear and concise text illustrated with more than a thousand graphic drawings, the author guides the reader on a lively tour of the muscles, bones, ligaments and joints of the arms, legs and trunk. The focus throughout the book is on anatomy not for its own sake, but in its functional relationship to the actual movements of the body in dance, exercise and other physical disciplines.

    5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2007-05-14

A MUST-HAVE for any student/teacher of any movement-based discipline. I refer to this book constantly. I also see it repeatedly in all the trainings and workshops I have attended.

4 out of 5 stars Different approach to anatomy.......2007-04-10

This book is a much more artistic approach to anatomy. In my class we used it along with Muscilino's anatomy book, and it helped both sides of my brain wrap around the muscles and body parts. I think I will be a better teacher because of it.

4 out of 5 stars easy to read, lots of info.......2007-03-09

This detailed and easy to read book makes learning anatomy for sports enthusiasts simple. The only thing I would comment on is that if the diagrams were colour coded, eg red for ligaments, green for muscles, it would demystify anatomy further!

4 out of 5 stars essential for understanding movement.......2007-03-06

As part of the required course work for my Pilates certification, I now use this book frequently for reference as I try to explain complex body mechanics to my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginning and intermediate students.......2007-01-30

_Anatomy of Movement_ by Blandine Calais-Germain is an excellent book for someone who is new to kenesiology, and also for the beginning and intermediate athlete.

As its title suggests, _Anatomy of Movement_ focuses on the bones, muscles, ligaments & tendons we use when we move. Each major section of the body, such back, arms, legs, etc., gets its own section in the book.

The anatomical drawings are very well done. The book has enough text to explain the drawings, but not so much as to overwhelm the reader. There are drawings showing the directions each muscle pulls in during different types of movements. Those drawings are VERY helpful to understanding the kinesiology of the body.

There was also an extensive section in the beginning on anatomical terms, such as dorsal, dorsiflexion, lateral, anterior, posterior, etc. The sections on the spine, pelvis, & knees were exceptionally well done.

I am not a bodyworker, masseuse, or dancer; but as an engineer who sits in an office chair all day and does martial arts and occasionally yoga to relax, I have developed a keen interest in kenesiology and anatomical studies. _Anatomy of Movement_ didn't specifically tell me the mechanics of any single karate kata** or yoga asana, and it didn't specifically explain why bad posture in a chair leads to a sore back when I walk around -- but it did give me a sound base of knowledge when I started reading other books about specific movements and activities.

** - _Anatomy of Movement_ did help me understand how joint locks on the shoulder work.
