    Book Description

The best way to cure illness, as renowned nutritionist Dr. Christine Lydon explains, is to prevent it. And illness prevention begins with good nutrition, weight management, and fitness. Look Hot, Live Long offers Dr. Lydon's simple, proven prescription for women who want to look their best, feel their best, and live a long, healthy life. Using scientifically supported dietary guidelines, cutting-edge training techniques, and practical strategies for incorporating both into daily life, Dr. Lydon explains how we can manage (and lose) weight, tone the body, and promote overall health and well-being simply and successfully. In her program, "eating right" is not synonymous with -deprivation and suffering,- and "staying active" does not entail long hours devoted to a human hamster wheel. Part One, which focuses on nutrition, assists readers in improving their nutrition IQ, explaining first how the body uses macronutrients - carbohydrates, protein, and fat-and then how to turn those physiological processes to a health-endowing purpose. Readers will learn strategies for successful dieting as well as dietary techniques to support the heart, bones, digestive system, and mental health, and to combat cancer. In Part Two, which focuses on strength training and physique sculpting, Dr. Lydon explains why strength training is an integral element of fitness and health. Readers will find answers to common concerns women have about strength training, such as the time commitment necessary to participate. They'll also learn how to design a weight-lifting program for maximum benefit, whether they want to tone the body, increase stamina, improve athletic performance, and/or bulk up. Dr. Lydon's Appendices offer an encyclopedic reference of healthful foods broken down by macronutrient group and serving size, a glycemic index of common carbohydrate sources, and a variety of strength-training routines to optimize muscle tissue development.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, easy ready and unintimidating.......2005-10-25

I believe this book is a wonderful gift to bestow amongst your female friends who are interested in living the fitness lifestyle. While Ms. Lydon will break out into medical jargon and get very technical, she also capsizes into bullet format after each detailed section a set of 'cliff notes' for review and easier understanding.

As a doctor, she eschews the woefully mismantled food pyramid and discusses the need for MORE protein and MORE balance. Ms. Lydon does not go for fads and does not believe in starvation tactics. Her section on supplements is helpful as she talks about supps that have real supportive data and what not to waste your money on.

Her training philopshy is basic yet detailed and speaks of the dreaded overtraining syndrome which many enthuasiasts are not careful to pay attention to.

I am extremely impressed with this book and as a personal trainer am likely to buy a few copies to give to clients who would like to walk the walk -- not just talk the talk. Her writing style is charming and upbeat without sounding sophomoric. You get a feeling that she is truly portraying herself and her love of the lifestyle.

I would love to see Ms. Lydon write more books on the subject matter.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2003-11-26

I was familiar with Dr Lydon's work as a columnist for Oxygen magazine, & was impressed enough with her writing to purchase this book.
First of all, Chris Lydon is a medical doctor (MD), so she's not hawking the latest fad. This book presents facts, & the research to back it up.
I really like the way Dr Lydon explains why she takes a certain viewpoint e.g. why liquid creatine should not be your preferred option. The point by point review of important points to remember at the end of each segment is also great.
All in all, I found it to be a thoroughly worthwhile book.

5 out of 5 stars This book Rocks!.......2003-11-16

Christine gives guidance and advice for people to live longer lives by being healthier using very nutritional alternatives to high fat/carb diets while incorporating exercise routines to fit all levels of ability and time restrictions.
Her medical and fitness modeling background gives substance and real life experience to her book. I loved reading and will use it to help guide my new start to a healthy lifestyle!

    Book Description

The fifth edition of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription provides a comprehensive and advanced approach to physical fitness appraisal and exercise prescription. With new information, expanded chapters, and an array of ancillary materials, this text will serve as a unique resource for both students and practitioners.

Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Fifth Edition, provides a well-balanced approach to the assessment of physical fitness and the design of exercise programs, addressing cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular fitness, body weight and composition, and flexibility. Two chapters are dedicated to each of these fitness components: one on assessment, followed by one on exercise prescription.

The text is reflective of updates made in the seventh edition of ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, and it is expanded to include new or updated information on the following areas: • Maximal and submaximal graded exercise testing in healthy populations, including treadmill and cycle ergometer ramp protocols • Muscular fitness testing protocols and norms for children and adults • Field tests and norms for evaluating the cardiorespiratory fitness, functional strength, and flexibility of older adults • Guidelines for developing periodized resistance training programs for novice, intermediate, and advanced lifters • Physical activity and exercise recommendations for health benefits, weight loss, and weight maintenance

Both students and practitioners will benefit from the multidisciplinary approach used in this book. It synthesizes concepts, principles, and theories based on research in exercise physiology, kinesiology, measurement, psychology, and nutrition to provide a direct and clear-cut approach to physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription. Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Fifth Edition, includes pedagogical tools such as key questions at the beginning of each chapter, key points, review questions, and key terms. In addition, the text features an array of ancillary tools: an instructor guide, as with the previous edition, and two new tools, including a test package and a presentation package. All three ancillaries are offered online through a convenient product-specific Web site. These ancillaries will greatly aid the teaching process and provide a richer educational experience.

To enhance the material, this text is packaged with the supplemental online course, Cardiorespiratory Fitness Assessment and Prescription. The course works in tandem with the text to bridge the gap between research and practice, providing a comprehensive and advanced approach to physical fitness testing and exercise prescription. The online course component will help readers test and assess cardiorespiratory fitness in normal adults and design exercise programs to match their individual requirements and abilities. Readers will assume the role of a newly hired fitness trainer and will interact with six virtual clients in real-life situations as they move through a series of situations and exercises. A brief quiz will complete each daily session.

The substantially updated Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Fifth Edition, is an essential text and reference for students and professionals of exercise science. Additions and revisions to the text make it the most valuable and relevant resource available for practitioners.

      Book Description

A companion to the bestselling The Perricone Prescription, this personal journal is filled with information, tips, and a three-month day-by-day guide to everything you need to do to look and feel years younger!

With detailed information about Dr P.'s diet and exercise suggestions, tips for staying motivated, a step-by-step daily skin-care routine, and a helpful three-month day-by-day guide to each step in the Perricone process, The Perricone Prescription Personal Journal is the perfect companion to the bestselling The Perricone Prescription.

Let's face it — the average Australian wants to look his or her best (not to mention, his or her youngest), but busy schedules and a life on the go make it difficult to remember and `pencil in' all the details of a new diet, even one as easy-to-follow as Dr Perricone's. The Perricone Prescription Personal Journal, which breaks the diet into daily doses, makes the instructions easier to stick to and remember, and virtually guarantees a successful journey to vibrant, younger-looking skin, and a fit, toned body.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect).......2006-08-10

It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.

His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.

And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.

1 out of 5 stars I've read about him in jounals.......2004-04-21

It seems he's not widely respected by other physicians.

5 out of 5 stars Words of wisdom.......2003-02-06

I devoured Dr. Perricone's Wrinkle Cure book, so I was ecstatic about his latest book, The Perricone Prescription. His advice is so logical and easy to follow it was no wonder I shed weight and felt great, not to mention looking younger, too! His menu plan and anti-aging research is not to miss! The journal was such a helpful tool to follow my progress. That is why I have previously given up on other diet plans. This was easy to follow and successful, too! Thanks Dr. Perricone!

5 out of 5 stars Handiest and my best nutrition tool!.......2003-02-04

The Perricone Prescription Journal is the best tool I have ever used for a nutritional program and it has become as essential to my day as my home keys!! Not only can I follow a daily menu at a glance, but I can keep track of my progress as far as skin and body condition: (my weight, of course but important details too like my pore size and my stress level) as well as jot down my impressions and my feelings every day! Plus I love the fact that the book is light weight and spiral-bound. Extremely handy, full of zen-like sensible advice, I recommend it to anyone with a will to win the anti-aging battle!

      5 out of 5 stars It Works!.......2003-01-31

Once I started writing in the Journal the effects were amazing. The daily reports motivated me to stay on the program and the results, noticable with every passing day have been wonderful. I've lost weight, feel great but best of all feel in control. I can honestly say that Dr. Perricone has changed my life for the better.

"You can have the body you want," promises A. Scott Connelly, M.D., a physician, personal trainer, sports nutrition specialist, and sports-supplement designer. His "6-Pack Prescription" is a program of four six-week cycles (strength training, sculpting, fat burning, and maintenance/endurance), each with its own eating plan, exercise program, and optional supplementation. Six months, promises Connelly, will give you the body you want.

"To change how you look on the outside, you need to reverse what's happening on the inside" by reprogramming your body to manufacture muscle, says Connelly. He emphasizes "nutrient partitioning," the principle that "a metabolic traffic cop" directs nutrients into fat-burning muscles or parks them as stored fat. Ingredients and additives in the foods we eat cause nutrients to move into the fat-storage parking lot instead of the fat-burning expressway. He recommends eating plenty of high-fiber complex carbohydrates and low-fat protein, and eliminating processed foods containing fructose ("the Stealth bomber of sweeteners"). Although Connelly designed a line of supplements marketed by Met-Rx, he restricts his supplementation recommendations to one short chapter and does not push his own line. Connelly's exercise program focuses on weight training, with 20 exercises divided into four different weekly workout sessions. Illustrations of the exercises, which work all the major muscle groups, include both machine and free-weight options. Charts--both filled in with his prescription and blank for you to log your actual program--are provided for meal planning and exercise. --Joan Price

      5 out of 5 stars Great Program.......2005-11-23

I visited my cousin last summer who now looks like he should be on the cover of Men's Health. I asked him what he had done to transform his body and he recommended this book.

I have been on this program for 12 weeks now. I have always worked out by running and lifting weights and was in fairly good shape but wanted to lose a few stubborn pounds I couldn't get rid of. All the other diets I tried emphasized cutting calories. I would stay on them for a couple weeks and lose some pounds but was always hungry and new that as soon as I started eating again the weight would come back.

Since I have been on this program I have never been hungry and have developed a lifelong eating plan. My waist has shrunk 2 inches, I have dropped 25 pounds and my cholesterol has dropped from 235 to 177 with my good cholesterol increasing and bad cholesterol decreasing. If you purchase the book and follow the program you will see results.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible results, if you have faith to see it through.......2004-07-28

Dr. Scott's program is not for the faint of heart. The program leans towards the bodybuilder's approach, in that it uses cycling of different phases (bulking/cutting/maintenance), so for the first 2 cycles you are mostly building strength and muscle rather than shedding fat. You are expected to eat far more food than you would on a normal diet, and most people actually feel a little "thicker" during C1 and only start seeing real results between the end of Cycle 2 and the middle of C3. Since many dieters are too short-sighted to see the long-term benefit in this, it may scare some people away. It requires a great deal of faith and forsight to believe that all this food consumption will result in fat loss, but believe it or not, it works like a charm! About 3/4 of the way into the program, the results start to show drastically (I guess that's why the author is a renound metabolic expert).

Since most diet books cator to the shortsighted "weekend dieters", this one is a rare find in that it really takes the time to do things right, by building you up first and setting the foundation for long-term results. For those few who are realistic enough to understand that no fitness model became that way in a weekend (or even 3 months for that matter), but are willing to work hard for 5 or 6 months for extreme results, this program is for you. (BTW, the latter phrase describes *the* one and only secret formula of the fitness cover-models that the suppliment companies don't want you to know about )

I really didn't expect to have any visible results during C1, mostly because I participated in a Body RX chat forum and knew what to expect. I'm now half-way through C2, and for the first time I'm really starting to see results. Today after my workout I happened to catch a glimse of myself in the locker room mirror, and had to do a double-take.

Cycle 3 is where the real fat-loss occurs, and I've heard so many positive accounts of people's C3 experiences, I'm really looking forward to that cycle.

Some people compare this program with Body For Life. To be honest, I've tried BFL and it actually took me longer to get results. BFL falls short by trying to convince you that you can gain muscle and lose fat all at the same time (which may work if you are new to strength training, but won't last long). Also, BFL doesn't fully explain your macronutrient requirements, but instead uses a more arbitrary "palm/fist" method which may lead to macronutrient deficiencies that can ultimately shortcircuit your success. While BFL may be a good place to start (actually, an even better place to start is Tom Venuto's "Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle" online book at burnthefat.com), Body RX is almost like the next level.

Note that the 5 star rating is for the program, not so much for the book itself -- there are some misprints, and there are also some aspects of the program which are not well explained and can be interpreted in a multiple ways. Just to warn you ahead of time, the insane "yellow carb requirements" are actually only *upper limits*, so you are not required to eat all those carbs (can you imagine?). However for best results, the author recommends eating more yellow carbs during C1, fewer during C2, and still fewer during C3.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!!!!.......2004-05-19

I started at over 100 pounds overweight in March 2004, and I am now almost 40 pounds lighter in May, roughly almost 2 months time, with two weeks off due to unforseen circumstances. Not only am I lighter, but I have gained a good amount of muscle and feel much stronger. I am done with Cycle one of the book, and I'm starting cycle two now. This book is wonderful as it teaches you how to eat, rather than give you a diet that is really hard to stick on. When I started the weight training part of the book, I was fat, weak, and moving a limb would knock me out of breath. Now I have alot more stamina, strength, and ability. If you do this book, You can do it without supplements, unlike Bodyforlife, but I suggest looking into what the book suggests as options, plus with an added supplement of CLA IMHO. Losing 40 pounds in two months with added muscle tone is great, and I'm looking forward to the end of cycle two, cycle three, and finishing the entire program after cycle four.

        Book Description

Medical qigong is one of the four main branches of Chinese medicine, and it is the energetic foundation upon which the others (acupuncture, herbal medicine, and medical massage) are based. Medical qigong and tai chi exercises are becoming more popular, but there are few books that discuss how they can be used to help address specific disorders. This book is the first medical qigong book that does not simply introduce a set of exercises that are a part of a general qigong routine. Rather, the exercises provided are those prescribed to patients at qigong hospitals in China. Medical qigong doctors and Chinese medicine hospitals have used these exercises for hundreds of years and yet they are relatively unknown in this country. The first half of the book introduces medical qigong theory from a modern Western scientific perspective as well as from the traditional Daoist and Chinese medicine perspectives, so that the reader will understand why and how medical qigong exercises work. The second half is practical exercises for self-healing. The book introduces guidelines for selecting appropriate exercises, and then the exercises themselves. There are general tonification (strengthening), purgation (sedating), and regulation exercises for health maintenance, followed by sections on specific organ and health disorders. This book targets health care practitioners as well as "patients," meaning anyone interested in taking an active role in the healing process.

        4 out of 5 stars a bit hyped.......2007-05-14

This is a good introduction but not as good as the rave reviews would really have you believe. This isn't a five-star book. Some parts of the text could do with some illustrations. Much of the info in here is available in Jerry Alan Johnson's books so it would really need something new or a new approach or inspired layout to lift it into the five star all-time classic category. Still not to bad but not worth all the hoopla from her colleagues.

4 out of 5 stars Great for patients.......2007-05-12

I am an acupuncture health care provider by trade and I often need to offer my patients Qigong exercises that they can do at home. I have several books with exercises, but you can never have too many.

I am a graduate student in Traditional Chinese Medicine and have studied Medical Qigong under Dr. Suzanne Friedman for the past year. Suzanne learned her art in China and now trains Medical Qigong practitioners in one of the only Medical Qigong programs in the USA. As an instructor, Suzanne demonstrates adept expertise continually through lecture and clinic. She is both personable and professional while imparting valuable insight with illustrative stories from her personal experience and practice.

I highly recommend this book for any healer or self-healer. It is concise, organized, cohesive, practical, and informative. This book promotes holistic self-healing of the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Spiritual seekers, and especially qigong practitioners, must be especially wary because books containing ancient/traditional knowledge often misguide the reader (slightly or blatently), in order to protect proprietary information. Suzanne is not such a teacher -- she cares deeply for healing and health. This little book is a good book to have and learn from.

If you want more knowledge about alternative medicine and qigong, I encourage you to visit the website for Dr. Suzanne Friedman's clinic (google search for "daoclinic").

Medical Qigong Exercise Prescriptions: This small book contains more valuable information about medical qigong than most books two to three times its size. It is concise, well-written, and accomplishes what it sets out to do, which is to introduce the reader to the theory and practice of medical qigong. Anyone who reads this book will be able to put it to immediate use and begin practicing exercises specifically designed for their particular health issues.

4 out of 5 stars R-Evolutionary Hypothesis, but outdated specifics.......2005-03-03

This book introduced the paleolithic diet idea. The scholarship and originality are great. This idea is the basis of any kind of intelligent diet save two, the Medit. and Japanese. It is the best of them all. But for the more current and based on recent science you need to check out the Cordain book or Audette. I have researched diet for years and the paleo concept not only makes the best sense scientifically per evolution and biochemistry, but in practice as well. Hats off on the start of the best diet movement yet.

5 out of 5 stars Paleolithic Diet in Moderation.......2002-04-03

The paleolithic diet recommendations in this book are a bit more conservative in that whole grain breads and pastas, legumes and some low fat dairy products are allowed. I believe alot of the other popular paleolithic diet books severely restrict if not eliminate these items along with most carbohydrates. In fact, the diet recommended in this book reminds me a great deal of the Mediterranean Diet. Someone interested in eating healthier versus someone wanting to lose weight will find it very helpful. Provides a good foundation from which to become familiar with the paleolithic diet without being too extreme.

5 out of 5 stars A prescription for living based on our evolutionary past........1999-01-26

The Paleolithic Prescription provides detailed advice on living well based on evidence from our evolutionary past. The authors, physicians and anthropologists from Emory University, have written an eminently readable work. They deserve great credit for their extensive research.

The book's main theme is that humans today are genetically little different from our hunting and gathering ancestors. The agricultural revolution some 10,000 years ago and the industrial revolution some 200 years ago radically changed our relationship with the Earth. The authors marshall evidence that much degenerative disease can be attributed to our essentially pre-agricultural bodies being unable to adapt to post-agricultural and post-industrial conditions.

Both the Zone books by Dr.Barry Sears and Protein Power by the Eades list The Paleolithic Prescription as a reference. The principal focus of the book is nutrition but the authors also contrast the relationship between the sexes that occurred when we forsook our evolutionary heritage.

The book is not based on conjecture.A handfull of hunting and gathering peoples still exist on our planet.Extensive anthropological observations as well as fossil evidence provide convincing evidence.

The authors do not deny the merits of modern medicene. They feel we can apply the lessons of past life ways and enjoy optimal health in the best of both worlds.I would like to ask the authors if the lowering of the infant mortality rate through the conquest of infectious disease [with its subsequent deterioration of the gene pool] is in the planet's best interests in the long run.

This is a profoundly important book.I rank it among the top 5 most influential books of my life. It is essential reading for anyone caring about preventing degenerative health problems:cancer,cardio-vascular,asthma,arthritis,etc.
