Book Description

It’s Alison’s wedding and she and her groom, Luca, have just exchanged vows and are preparing to cap off their perfect day at the reception. But before the champagne even hits the crystal stemware, Luca’s first wife storms in and snatches back her children in front of the horrified guests. When the fuss has died down, Alison finds an ally in Fiona, who confides that a few women she knows have recently started something called the Second Wives Club—a group of female friends who get together to bitch and gossip about the drama that inevitably unfolds when you marry someone else’s husband.

The club’s founding members include Julia, a stunning self-proclaimed trophy wife whose husband insists on remaining uncomfortably close to his former spouse; Susan, whose live-in boyfriend is the classic widower who can’t let go of his beloved ex’s memory; and, of course, Fiona, whose cross to bear is the teenage stepson from hell and an ex who’s bent on sabotaging her relationship. Fortunately, the Club gives them a place to vent, and together they contend with malicious rumors, scheming divorce lawyers, and ex-wives intent on revenge—until they decide that it’s time to stop settling for second best . . . and then the fun really begins.

Told with Moore’s signature wit, wisdom, and sass, The Second Wives Club proves that second wives can be every bit as winning as the girl next door—and offers a dishy, unputdownable look at the modern marital love triangle.

I found the book very funny actually. I couldn't put it down, had to see what silly antic one of them was going to pull next!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read this year........2006-11-19

The storyline has been well covered on this book. The only thing that I can add is that I picked up the book and read it in one sitting. As you can probably make out - I enjoyed this novel. Looking forward to the next novel by Jane Moore.

4 out of 5 stars Hen Lit? - the characters are no longer Chicks.......2006-10-08

This book was different from what I'd expected from the title. I guess that's understandable, as I was probably thinking of Olivia Goldsmith's "The First Wives Club", which was about women who had been left for younger, trophy wives and was humorously vengeful. Instead, the characters had problems stemming from being second wives and instead of simply whining and complaining, they tried to find solutions - with mixed results and outcomes.

This latest book from Jane Moore was about the other side of the equation - the women the husbands of the first wives married. Being a first wife myself, I'll admit it's a bit chilling to think there are women who are intentional predators of married men to the extent portrayed in this book. It was a little difficult to feel much sympathy for the consequences the women experienced after having successfully schemed and manipulated the men into leaving their wives for them. It was also hard to feel sympathy for the men - after all, it was their behavior that got them into the situations to begin with.

In any event, each woman had a different scenario and I thought the author did a good job of giving them all unique personalities, some more likeable or sympathetic than others. Perhaps because successful and affluent men tend to be almost a target to women who wish to marry "well", whether they're married or not, it was a little difficult to identify with those second wives in this book simply because I don't know anyone like that, probably because I don't move among the really rich, ultra successful set. The more typical second wife I believe most of us have met, know and can relate to are women who happen to meet and marry men whose first marriage didn't work out ... often struggling financially and emotionally because of stepchildren, child support - and sometimes also encountering problems with an ex-wife (even though they didn't break up the marriage doesn't mean there won't be issues there typically when there were children involved).

Whether through my own lack of sympathy for the characters who broke up marriages to become a second wife or because the author slanted the story that way, I enjoyed the story line the most of the two women who were involved with men whose first marriages were over before they met them. Their situations seemed more real life typical, but perhaps that's just my real life, as I personally don't know any women who have intentionally pursued a married man - guess I've led an enviably sheltered life.

As with some of her prior books, Jane Moore's books don't always have a sugar coated ending, though they typically end rather neatly and this book is no exception.

Overall, this was an enjoyable, fast moving and quick reading book. I guess you could call it a more grown up chick lit, in that the characters are all a bit older and in relationships, as opposed to the usual 20-somethings living the single life and looking for liquor and love.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2006-09-20

What a vapid collection of women. With the exception of Susan, none of the women are sympathetic. If there is one thing to take away from the novel it is this: don't go out with ANY man who claims his marriage is far from over. Wait until it actually is over. If a man can be "stolen" or if he wants to be "stolen" then he isn't worth your time and the legacy of frustration that will follow you for the rest of your life. And the women just sit back and talk about how the first wives need to get on with their life - as if having one's life thrown upside down is something that is as easily recovered from as having a cold. One of the characters spent two years stalking her then-married boss and is surprised when the first wife doesn't just rollover and be satisfied with the new changes to her life. What do you expect? And for the record, I am not a first or second wife, but I hated this book nonetheless. If I want to read about selfish, vapid people attempting to control the world around them and then being unable to cope when the world bites back, I'll pick up a newspaper.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!!.......2006-08-04

After reading one of Jane Moore's other novels (The Ex-Files), I was somewhat eager to pick up her newest one, The Second Wives Club. While I enjoyed The Ex-Files, it wasn't one of my favorite chick-lit novels, so I wasn't too excited about Second Wives Club. However, this time, Jane Moore really struck gold.

I loved this novel. I was addicted from page 1. The 4 women whose husbands all, at one point, belonged to someone else were great characters. I especially liked the way Moore told each of their stories individually, and then intertwined them throughout the book, as well. Her writing style also seems to have improved...I found this novel more compelling and less confusing than The Ex-Files.

Overall, I would highly recommend The Second Wives Club. I feel that anyone can relate to at least one of the women...even if the reader herself is not married/dating as a second wife/girlfriend.

Book Description

Second wives are often plagued by problems ranging from intrusions by their husband's ex-wife to the logistical horrors of sharing children over the holidays. With the divorce rate at over 65 percent, such issues are a growing reality for many women.

The authors, a husband-and-second-wife team, use clinical case studies and informative vignettes to highlight distinctions between a healthy second marriage and one tarnished by what they term "ghostly intrusions" from a prior marriage. Using self-diagnostic quizzes throughout the book, readers will learn to develop and customize workable techniques for resolving their second-wife issues.

5 out of 5 stars Like finding a friend in the same situation.......2005-08-20

I thought this book was very helpful. When I read it, I suddenly felt like, Wow! Someone has felt exactly how I feel! Which helped me because then I could read how they handled it and how it worked for them. I found the book very helpful and felt better after reading it.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought it.......2005-07-25

I didn't like this book at all. I bought it based on the summary and reviews here, but when I got it and read it, I was disapointed. Maybe it just didn't fit my situation, but I found the quizzes silly and the advice just basic common sense.

2 out of 5 stars Good info, but...........2004-05-25

I found this one hard to read. I've spent the last 6 months preparing for stepmotherhood, and I realize that it's really important to keep my marriage in the forefront of my mind. This book just really didn't do it for me. I must be lucky because my fiance is just the opposite of the men portrayed here. He's supportive, loving, and considers my needs as well as the kids needs the same.

4 out of 5 stars On the money..........2002-12-14

Written by a second husband and wife team, this book is "designed to help you and your husband become lifelong lovers," and the authors tell us up front that "Knowledge is power; ignorance is vulnerability." That theme is prevalent throughout the book and makes it a helpful companion so that a second wife can identify and work to solve her problems. Everything is the book is based on the acronym LOVERS, and these points are factored into each solution and idea:

Loyalty
Openness

Value of Trust
Empathy
Respect
Stability of Commitment

We have to deal with a history we may not like or understand, and the difficulties can escalate into crises quickly. The average second marriage lasts only 4.5, years, the authors say, so many of us are struggling. Much of the book is devoted to transcripts from couples in counseling. You'll identify with many of the challenges they discuss.

The authors cover six problem areas, including the ex-wife, the kids, grandkids, the mother-in-law, friends, and damaging memories. Each section includes a quiz and responses and behaviors that will help you deal with the issues of your family.

You'll also see a "How to Find Your Challenge" quiz at the end where you can learn just how serious your problems are. Finally, there are "Help Yourself Tools" that include relaxation exercises, communication skills, problem solving tips and more. This book is straight talk specifically to the second wife -- when you've been there, you understand.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoying being a "Second Wife".......2000-02-20

As a long time second wife, I found that this book confirmed many of the experiences that I had to learn through trial and error and often tears. It was well written and addressed all the issues that we, as second families, struggle with. I recommend it to all women in my position, especially those just beginning this new adventure. Thank you for sharing your experiences as a second wife. As a professional in the mental health field myself, I have already recommended this book to a client.

2 out of 5 stars Baby No Thanks!!!.......2005-04-27

This book was tedious and difficult to get through. It did not provide much in the way of solutions to problems except 'have a baby'.

4 out of 5 stars This book was very helpful.......2004-08-24

It doesn't look like there are any other reviewers who really have dealt with the problems of being a second wife. I thought Susan covered all the bases pretty well. I have been a second wife for five years, to a man still dealing with the hang-ups of that failed relationship. I came to our relationship fresh and ready to make a life with this man, but found myself in a triangle instead - the other woman simply (still) refuses to move on - and feeling helpless. Ms. Barash's book gave me the insights I needed to save my relationship. She helped me focus on US, get my mind out of the rut it had fallen into, by simply validating the many fears and problems, but more - by helping me focus on the REWARDS. She made me see I was actually feeding the problems with my unrealistic expectations, rather than dealing with reality. Thank you, Ms. Barash - your book empowered me. You helped me get that nasty thorn out of my side.

5 out of 5 stars Second Wives: The Pitfalls and Rewards.......2002-12-15

Every marriage requires adjustments from each partner. Women who become the second wives of previously married men find themselves facing special problems and adjustments. In Second Wives: The Pitfalls and Rewards of Marrying Widowers and Divorced Men, Susan Shapiro Barash explores the dilemmas and successes of these wives.
Barash speaks from experience--she's been a second wife twice and this is her fourth book involving personal relationships.
She interviewed hundreds of women from a variety of socio-economic and age groups. Although each woman's story is unique, Barash was able to divide them into twelve general categories, such as women dealing with a vengeful first wife, women coping with stepchildren, and women with less life experience than their husbands.
She devotes a chapter to each of the categories. The chapters are filled with stories from women describing the particular problems they faced and how they dealt with them. Some women forged successful marriages, and some did not. Many are still struggling. Each chapter also includes helpful advice and commentary from numerous experts.
Women contemplating marrying a man who has been divorced or widowed will find that Second Wives will help prepare them for the challenges ahead. Those who are already second wives will appreciate learning how others have handled the unique problems they must resolve to make their own marriages happy and healthy.

2 out of 5 stars Second Wives.......2002-04-27

I found Second Wives by Susan Shapiro Barash a disappointing read. The individual case studies were simplistic to a degree that prevented them from being interesting. Perhaps as a result of this the author's analysis of the data was also too simplistic to be useful. It is hard to imagine how anyone could profit from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Informative.......2000-09-16

Marriage is a tough haul when neither party's been married before, but when one party brings lots of other issues to the table, it's even tougher. Susan Shapiro Barash explores all the ups and downs that come with marrying someone who has an ex -- and gives you much food for thought. She's a gutsy lady -- having been a second wife twice. If all goes the way I'd like it to, I too may have the "second wife" moniker attached to me one day. At least, with Barash's book, I know exactly what I'm getting into, for better or worse. Thank you Susan Shapiro Barash for always dealing with women's issues that are close to our hearts, even if we don't always know it at the time.

Book Description

Catherine Todd is back again with another witty tale about life's unexpected surprises

After more than a decade alone, fortyish attorney Lynn Bartlett was ready for something more than nights curled up with Jane Austen and a recalcitrant tomcat. So when the right man came along -- kind, clever Jack Hughes -- she said yes to his proposal. How hard could it be? Jack's children were grown, and the Bay Area -- with its insatiable demand for immigrant technological workers -- offered plentiful opportunities for opening a new immigration practice. Lynn had every expectation for a transition that would be if not seamless, at least without unexpected obstacles.

Welcome to the world of the second wife, where nothing turns out quite as expected. After all, Lynn never anticipated that her new husband's first wife would show up uninvited at the fiftieth birthday party she throws him. And there was nothing in the wedding vows about Jack's unemployed son moving in with them or his daughter's implacable resistance to every friendly overture. Nor did she count on finding one of her clients so unsettlingly attractive. Not even the Anne Boleyn Society -- an informal support group for second wives whose motto could be "I never thought it would be so hard" -- had all the answers. And when her partner in the boutique immigration law practice she is building resigns under suspicious circumstances, Lynn finds that her career and her marriage are in jeopardy.

Todd captures Lynn's journey from wryly unmarried to impossibly fettered with empathy and wit. Secret Lives of Second Wives is the story of finding the balance between honoring your commitments and being true to yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Fun time, page-turner, hard to put down!.......2006-08-11

*****
I think that I enjoyed this book so much because I identified with it greatly---it was about a "second wife", married to a man with grown children and a local ex-wife, and all of the problems that occur in such a situation. I stayed up until 2am reading it and finished it the next day!

The author has a dry wit and the book is hilarious---I laughed out loud repeatedly throughout it. The main character is a late-forties second wife on her second marriage who has to deal with all that ensues when her husband has difficult and dysfunctional grown children and can't set boundaries or say no to his ex-wife. So the second wife begins to attend a support group called "The Anne Boleyn Club" to get new coping strategies and ideas to deal with her difficult life situation. More experienced second wives give her useful advice as she attempts to cope with all of the surprises that come when your new spouse has baggage from a former marriage.

I would call this book amazing and wonderful chick-lit. I loved it. It made me feel less alone in my current (and similar) situation. I loved the intelligence and humor of the author. I would recommend it to all second-wives, especially those of middle-age, but anyone who is curious about what it's like to be married a second time. Issues brought up in this book are not often talked about or written about, and I really enjoyed how the author courageously brought such issues out into the open, and in such an entertaining way, too.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Singing the second wife blues........2003-10-13

Lynn Bartlett is a bright and beautiful immigration lawyer in her forties who embarked on her second marriage with great expectations. Her new husband, Jack Hughes, is a kind, loving, funny, and intelligent man. Unfortunately, when Lynn married Jack, she underestimated the problems that she would have with Jack's grasping ex-wife and his two spoiled adult children.

Catherine Todd, in her funny and entertaining new book, "Secret Lives of Second Wives," explores the well-worn territory of how excess baggage from a first marriage sometimes drags a second marriage down. Todd's novel is not a rehash of old material, however. It is a refreshingly original story of a woman who is self-confident and comfortable in her own skin. Lynn is not willing to settle for second best either in her professional or her personal life. Her husband, laden with guilt about how he may have shortchanged his first family, incurs financial and psychological burdens that threaten to sabotage his relationship with Lynn.

Todd imbues Lynn's and Jack's story with a light and satirical touch. She takes amusing potshots at the materialistic and shallow lifestyle of certain Californians. The dialogue in "Secret Lives" is sharp and clever and the writing is crisp and fast-paced. Yet, underneath all of the lighthearted banter, there are serious undertones in this novel about the complexity of family relationships and the importance of commitment and compromise in a marriage. Catherine Todd's breezy prose style and her intelligent treatment of the dynamics of second marriages make "Secret Lives of Second Wives" a first-rate and very appealing contemporary novel.

5 out of 5 stars An amusing often-melancholy character study.......2003-07-03

Immigration attorney Lynn Bartlett's first marriage was a disaster. For approximately a decade, she avoided serious alliances though that made the nights lonely. Tech business executive Jackson Hughes is divorced also, but unlike Lynn he has two children, supposedly adults. Lynn and Jackson are perfect for each other and marry. They settle in Silicon Valley, which is ideal, as his company is near and she has a strong client base in the green card professionals who lost employment due to the downturn in dot.com

One year after they tie the knot, Lynn throws a fiftieth birthday party for her spouse. Though contented, she is not totally into the gala as she finds a Russian scientist more interesting than her husband. She also detests having his children around as they treat her like a fungus; even worse his son plans to move in with them. His first wife has made a martyred appearance that deserves an Oscar. Only her peers at the Anne Boleyn Society provide any relief for the beleaguered second wife.

THE SECRET LIVES OF SECOND WIVES is an amusing often-melancholy character study. Lynn and Jackson work on (or ignore) family issues that make them seem real. Her clients also add depth to Lynn's character. However, his children behave so blatantly and appallingly nasty towards Lynn, readers will wonder why Jackson fails to divorce the duo. His first wife is subtler in her tactics so that she comes across as a sneaky, nasty, but clever schemer. Catherine Todd provides a solid tale that could have been a great novel if she had created realistic antagonists.

Book Description

Mid-life romance-how promising! How sweetly appealing! Maybe. Herself a second wife, Martha Stahl talks straight about the preparation required for those women who are marrying a widower. Because they're older and considered "wiser," such couples tend not to take the care needed for happiness and satisfaction in their marriages. Stahl married for the first when she was in her late 40s. The marriage turned out well, but it presented her with situations she hadn't imagined before: - How to date privately in a small community? (There are tricks!) - What about premarital counseling? (What's a young pastor to tell two romantics twice his or her age?) - What to do with the first wife's things, and photos from the first marriage? - How to handle different expectations about money, sex, and vacations? - How to survive personality quirks, and daily likes and dislikes? Stahl writes from her own life. She draws, too, on 40 responses to a questionnaire she sent to second wives who share her Christian faith. The book is full of stories. Many are touched with humor; many are full of spicy wisdom. This book is for anyone contemplating becoming a second wife-or for the children or friends of any such adventurer.

2 out of 5 stars Too religious, not what I expected.......2006-03-01

Way too religious. Didn't get anything out of the book. It seemed very dated and alot of the stories were from older people - over 60. I'm 43 and live in a city, and couldn't relate to all the farm stories, bible passages, etc.

Book Description

A smart and hilarious look at husbands, wives, and exes, from the critically acclaimed novelist, and pundit of domesticity.

Karen Karbo turns her signature wit and wisdom to the state of marriage, divorce, and remarriage in this wildly funny and often painfully accurate portrayal of a life rife with "exes": your ex, your husband or wife's ex, the ex of the ex, and of course, their children. Generation Ex is written from the point of view of five women who gather periodically to share stories, blow off steam, and have a few laughs about the impossible-and stubbornly persistent-phenomenon that is the ex-relationship. These are the stories of women who have survived dating, a first marriage, and subsequent divorce. They now have everything they've ever wanted, but wind up with much more than they bargained for. They're a bit older, wiser, more secure-and still manage to find themselves in the middle of rather messy situations.

A welcome relief from the how-tos and woebegone accounts of divorce, Generation Ex offers comic relief and wisdom to what has become a fairly common, though still maddening, state of affairs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Too much like my own life!!!.......2004-01-09

Karbo has drawn a funny vision of her boyfriend's ex-wife Claudia, but what is more surprising is that her pity for Claudia comes through clearly. Here is a woman who is a disaster at everything from raising goats to letting go of her ex, a woman who thinks harassment is just another way to say she cares, but still Karbo feels sorry for Claudia. It is clear her frustration with the situation is not aimed at Claudia so much as it is aimed at her boyfriend who refuses to take a stand and tell Claudia that breaking and entering to cut up underwear does nothing to endear her to him.

I love this book. I am a second wife and a stepmom and have had many of the same experiences, although my husband's ex doesn't break into our house when she feels like she is being ignored. She just sends us a death threat via email. ;-)

1 out of 5 stars Don't read this book if you're happily married.......2003-12-23

For all this book was touted as a look at divorce and life with exes, it was really just "Karen Karbo's personal life." Whenever she had a chance to expand her scope, she ruthlessly restricted it. When she had a chance to discuss issues on a broader level, she brought them back to the personal. And what a peach of a personal life it is, too. I've never felt quite so soiled by a book. Perhaps it's a sign of her power as a writer, but by the end of the book I was questioning my own very happy marriage. So now I'm warning everybody I know about this book. If you're happily married, and you don't really want to look for reasons to contemplate what divorced life would be like, just stay away.

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air!!!.......2003-10-20

This book was exactly what I needed! The author did an exceptional job at writing this book to be "laugh out loud funny", and is written in such a way that you can't help but put all of the frustrating things about your boyfriend/spouse's Ex into perspective. I'm sure that in the future, instead of allowing myself to become upset and stressed with my new man's reports of the latest phone call from his Ex, I will instead recall the chapter in Karen's book where she describes and labels the different types of phone calls that one can receive from the Ex. The description of the "Going Mental, F*** You Division" call is my absolute favorite.

This book is a must read for anyone involved in the circle of Ex's - and will definitely be a re-read for me! Offers a great perspective into all of those annoying, frustrating, and stressful situations that you will no doubt encounter at some point.

Warning: if you are one of those types who has no sense of humor and can only recognize all of the pain and suffering involved in divorce situations, this book is NOT for you. If, however, you're ready and willing to accept things as they are and "move on", this book will be exactly what you've been looking for!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, Laugh About Your Ex's Wife.......2003-06-04

If you're like me and you've pulled out hair or pounded your head against the wall at the antics of your husband's ex, this book is absolutely the read you need. Laugh out loud funny in parts, poignant in others, this book is reality with a capital "R". I guarantee you will see something of your own experiences in Karbo's tales of frustration. You gotta read this.

5 out of 5 stars A Five Teat Udder.......2001-08-21

I've been married thirty years. I'm not Gen-X or whatever they're calling themselves now. I think multiplying sex partners is probably a good way of multiplying germs that haven't even ever been discovered yet. And they might be bad germs. That said, I wouldn't have ever read this book on my own (like you might'nt've already guessed), but it tumbled into my hands on a recommendation a whole lot better than this one, and I never let go of the covers until I was done with it, which, believe me, required a 'git away from me I'm busy' growl every now and then. This book? Well, it's a little bit of story and a little bit of fact, but what it is mostly is a whole lot of fun. If you think that in divorce and disharmony, in alimony and acrimony, you can't find even a bit of levity and disacrimony, well buddy, think agin and read here..

          Book Description

There were six of them - three Katherines, two Annes, and a Jane. One of them was the King's wife for twenty-four years, another for only a year and a half. One died, two were divorced, and two were beheaded. It was a dangerous, uncertain life. After the King's death in 1547, his sixth wife finds a box of old letters - one from each of the first five wives. They are sad, angry, frightened letters. They tell the story of what it was like to be the wife of Henry VIII of England.
