There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender. Odd Girl Out begins with the premise that girls are socialized to be sweet with a double bind: they must value friendships; but they must not express the anger that might destroy them. Lacking cultural permission to acknowledge conflict, girls develop what Simmons calls "a hidden culture of silent and indirect aggression."
The author, who visited 30 schools and talked to 300 girls, catalogues chilling and heartbreaking acts of aggression, including the silent treatment, note-passing, glaring, gossiping, ganging up, fashion police, and being nice in private/mean in public. She decodes the vocabulary of these sneak attacks, explaining, for example, three ways to parse the meaning of "I'm fat."
Simmons is a gifted writer who is skilled at describing destructive patterns and prescribing clear-cut strategies for parents, teachers, and girls to resist them. "The heart of resistance is truth telling," advises Simmons. She guides readers to nurture emotional honesty in girls and to discover a language for public discussions of bullying. She offers innovative ideas for changing the dynamics of the classroom, sample dialogues for talking to daughters, and exercises for girls and their friends to explore and resolve messy feelings and conflicts head-on.
One intriguing chapter contrasts truth telling in white middle class, African-American, Latino, and working-class communities. Odd Girl Out is that rare book with the power to touch individual lives and transform the culture that constrains girls--and boys--from speaking the truth. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Dirty looks and taunting notes are just a few examples of girl bullying that girls and women have long suffered through silently and painfully. With this book Rachel Simmons elevated the nation's consciousness and has shown millions of girls, parents, counselors, and teachers how to deal with this devastating problem. Poised to reach a wider audience in paperback, including the teenagers who are its subject, Odd Girl Out puts the spotlight on this issue, using real-life examples from both the perspective of the victim and of the bully.

On the upside..........2007-06-09
What an incredible walk through our nation's schools--though only eye-opening because I didn't realize how prevalent my own experiences were among others. How sad that girlhood aggression has been labeled a "culture". On the upside, that ought to give it the attention that such destructive behavior is due. I know, I know, it's been said before: EVERY girl and her mother needs to read this.
Good to get it out there.......2007-05-02
I think the value in this book is its ablility to open up discussions about this subject. For generations, nothing has been said about it. Parents, teachers, school administrators, nobody wanted to talk about it. Without that discussion, nothing will ever change.
Odd Girl Out is beautifully written, sometimes heart-breaking, often maddening. I would have liked to have seen the author offer more solutions to the problem, but overall, I think it is a very valuable book and would recommend it to anyone with daughters.
Odd Girl Out---the book.......2007-04-15
Great book, very easy to read. Parents and girls should read this.
Interesting interviews, but feels repetitive and incomplete........2007-04-10
In Rachel Simmons' book, "Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls," she introduces us to three hundred girls from thirty schools across the country. Blasting the stereotype that girls are the kinder, gentler sex, Simmons' premise is that girls are taught to "be nice" and to "make friends," and, as a result, are unable to express anger that might destroy the façade of friendship. Because our culture does not grant girls "permission" to confront conflict directly, Simmons asserts, there exists a "hidden culture of silent and indirect aggression" consisting of "backbiting, exclusion, rumors, name-calling, and manipulation to inflict psychological pain on targeted victims." Simmons remembers how she felt when a third grader named Abby told the other girls not to play with her; she remembers her own responsibility in giving another girl the silent treatment. It is from that base of personal experience that Simmons conducted her interviews.
The book consists of Simmons interviews...many, many interviews. Over time, the interviews begin to seem mind-numbingly similar. Natalie's story, Lisa's story, Molly's story, Dina's story...each story becomes repetitive. At one point, I set the book aside for a week and found that I had lost my place. I attempted to find the exact page where I had stopped reading, but I found that it was impossible to do so. Since none of the stories stood out distinctly in my mind, I gave up my search for the "right" page; I picked a random early chapter that I knew I must have read already and resumed my reading.
I enjoyed reading the book, even given its repetitiveness problems, and with a lifetime of experience being the "odd girl out," I found it somewhat cathartic to read stories of young women who had experienced similar trauma. Simmons does some things well. Her explanation of the devastating impact of girls' aggression is compelling, and she does an excellent job of describing the dynamics of the hidden aggression. In addition, Simmons relates the various interviews in a compassionate and thoughtful manner.
Where she does not succeed, however, is in giving her readers tangible suggestions about ways to address the problems she emphasizes.
Odd Girl Out contains two hundred and seventy pages, but it is only during the last thirty of those pages that Simmons addresses possible solutions to the problems she outlines. In those thirty pages, Simmons tells readers to talk to their daughters, to tell teachers about what is happening, and to make sure that teachers take the problems seriously. Those are reasonable suggestions, but I wanted more. I did not find a plan to keep these things from happening to my young adult daughter in the first place, nor did I find a plan of action in the event these things happen to my daughter. It is not enough to recommend we talk to our daughters and to their teachers - my friends and I could suggest that plan to one another over a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Simmons has made a good first step in raising awareness of the problem. She needed to work harder, though, to provide parents and teachers with skills and with plans for action when facing these issues.
Now I understand why some girls are suddenly so mean!.......2007-03-14
I read this book in preparation for my daughter's middle school years. I can honestly say it helped prepare me the first time she came home in distress over a friendship that had taken a negative turn. It gives insight into what might be going on in a girl's mind when she suddenly starts displaying RA tactics, and the devastating effects it has on both the aggressor and the victim.
My daughter took great comfort from this book as well as the companion book, Odd Girl Speaks Out - they helped her understand her friend's possible motives and gave her some tools to use to turn the situation around. It also helped me open up a dialogue with her school, who were very responsive. RA can be overcome, but you have to educate yourself and your community. Sometimes this has to start with the parent, not the teachers. This book is a fantastic first step.

great seller for text books.......2007-02-10
Seller was very professional. My purchase was brand new and sent in a timely manner.
Developmental Profile Overview.......2007-01-05
An easy read... The information is quite familiar, if you have read other materials on health, safety, development, and nutrition issues for young children. The enclosed CD-ROM provides real and practical examples of classroom settings, setup, and activities--based on age.
book.......2006-04-07
This is an excellent book for Early Childhood Educators. The book is easy to read and it covers before birth to 12 years of age. It has excellent resources.
Helpful information.......2006-03-19
Although this book is a textbook I purchased it as a new parent for use as a guide to my daughter's development. While it does contain a great deal of useful information it doesn't go into significant detail about any particular phase of development but rather gives an overview of each stage, hitting the highlights. Nonetheless I would buy it again and think it was a good investment.
general review.......2005-09-30
This book gives the basic expectations for the ages specified. The book breaks the developmental expectations down by age, and covers most developmental expectations such as physical and cognitive and social. This is a good beginners book or one to reference.

Preeminent child psychologist, Michael Thompson is renowned for his efforts to educate and assist parents with sons. First with Raising Cain (his response to Mary Pipher's Reviving Ophelia ) and now with Speaking of Boys, Thompson encourages parents to help their sons develop the emotional intelligence necessary to succeed. The book seeks to answer parents' questions concerning the complexities of raising a boy in today's society. Every chapter introduces questions from parents on issues like puberty, underage drinking, and increased violence in schools, and in every instance the author responds with insightful and knowledgeable advice. Chapters entitled "Speaking of Social Anger and Aggression" and "Feelings and Communication--Is Our Sensitive Boy a Sitting Duck for Bullies?" are particularly in tune with the apprehension parents feel when sending their sensitive sons off for another grueling day at school.
The key to raising a healthy son, says Thompson, is to help your boy attain an emotional intelligence that will allow him to cope with difficult and threatening situations. To accomplish this, parents need to nurture compassion in their sons and try to avoid allowing them to become desensitized by the teasing and pressure of others. Respecting your son's need to appear strong at times and offering him a sense of safety when discussing emotionally revealing subjects are two ways Thompson encourages parents to nurture their son's emotional development. As anyone who is raising a boy knows, it's a job that is never quite finished, and with this book, Thompson offers parents an invaluable tool, regardless of their son's age. --Dal Asher
Book Description
My eight-year-old son is the only boy in his class who doesn't have a Gameboy. I don't want him to be ostracized for not having one, but I worry that it's addictive. What do you think?
Our two sons are eleven and fourteen, and they are fiercely competitive. The tension around our house is awful. How can we help them get along better?
We've worked very hard to keep our ten-year-old son in touch with his feelings. Sometimes it seems as if we've put him at a disadvantage, surrounded by tougher boys who can be pretty cruel with teasing. How can we help him protect himself when other boys start to tease?
With his bestselling book Raising Cain, Michael Thompson, Ph.D., at last broke the silence surrounding the emotional life of boys and spearheaded an important national debate. His warmth and humor quickly made him a popular and respected international speaker and consultant. Now he directs his authority, insight, and eloquence to answering your questions about raising a son. With candid questions and thoughtful, detailed responses, Speaking of Boys covers hot-button topics such as peer pressure, ADHD/ADD, and body image as well as traditional issues such as friendship, divorce, and college and career development. This perceptive, informative, and passionate book will leave you not only with useful, practical advice but also with the comforting knowledge that other parents share the same concerns you do when it comes to raising our boys into well-adjusted, responsible men.
Customer Reviews:
There is nothing wrong with my son.......2007-01-25
After another unpleasant meeting with my 9 year-old's teacher, my husband and I began to feel thoroughly discouraged and worried. I decided to do some research, came across this book, and nearly wept with relief.
Our current school system is dominated by women who fail to understand the psychology of boys. Prior to having sons, I believed that boys were rambunctious and agressive due to socialization. Like most parents, I learned otherwise; boys are different - and this does not make them bad. I am tired of teachers saying the word "boys" while rolling their eyes, as if being a boy implies the existence of some inherent defect. It's insulting, unfair, and serves to seriously damage our sons' chances of doing well academically. Boys are in an educational crisis - and it's a manufactured one.
If you have a son who kicks over the neighbour's snowman, climbs on the roof of the school, falls off his chair in class, gets into fights on the playground, annoys his teachers, blurts things out, and is generally considered a "problem", chances are, he's absolutely normal. Our intolerance to the energy of boys has led to millions of male children being medicated. It's an outrage, and parents need to confront the school systems and their attempts to feminize the male population. They can't run, they can't jump, they can't be competitive. They're supposed to act like girls, all quiet and co-operative, and when they don't - out with the ritalin.
Here's something I learned: Our son has never been allowed a toy gun, and yet he draws them constantly, tries to find books on guns in the library, chews his toast into the shape of a pistol, etc. His teacher was concerned, and called us in for a meeting about it.
This is a child who does not play video games, watch violence on tv, and is encouraged to be kind and compassionate. But there he is, drawing pictures of gangsters with machine guns. This book explained that it's a pretty normal thing. Our son got in trouble at school and lied to us about it. Again, fairly typical.
Our son is easily distracted - why? Because of "co-operative learning" where kids' desks are all shoved together. This works for GIRLS, not boys! I requested an alternative seating arrangement.
If you're worried about your son, you must read this book. It has changed my life. By the way, I'm a highschool teacher - I look at my male students completely differently now. Boys are lovely - there was a time when we knew this. This books has made me fall inlove with my boys all over again.
This Book is Sexist and Stereotypes Fathers as Incompetent.......2006-10-11
I thought this book was written by a woman as I first skimmed the pages, due to the sexist, stereotyped, and biased comments about men and boys within. I then saw the title page, and the author's (male) name.
I was intrigued until upon reading further I discovered that the "author" admits to having hired a woman named Teresa Barker to put the book together because he has "the organizational skills of an average eighth grade boy."
I had already drawn my conclusions about the author's bias before learning this. The author views boys . . . AND MEN . . . as infererior to woman emotionally and intellectually. If that supports you own biases, thenthis book is a love-fest for you. If not, I don't know where to direct you on this subject . . .
pg 7. "Finally if a man has struggled inarticulately in the past to explain himself . . . "
pg 12 . . . [men] have not had enough practice dealing with the energy level and willfulness of of small children. Women have . . . "
pg 20 - "In the boy realm, arrogance is a performance art . . . girls are more likely to act in a non-threatening way."
Michael Thompson....not his greatest work.......2006-09-05
This book was a good information book to read. It did not offer the type of insights that I Was looking for when I bought this book.
Useful, practical, inspring advice!.......2006-03-27
What a wondeful book! I have 3 sons (aged 15, 11 and 4 years) and so many of the questions and answers here were relevant to things they are doing or have done and how I have felt about things. I found the advice very sensible and up to date and reassuring.
Fantastic book - one you will want to read again........2005-06-23
This book is as entertaining as it is informative. It sparked a lot of conversations between my husband and I. I originally checked it out from the library and then realized I needed my own reference copy. Almost everything he says rings true and sheds a lot of light into the mind of a young boy.

Customer Reviews:
Great Visualizations!.......2006-02-27
Lots of "I am calm" and "I am relaxed" affirmations. Very good selection of "scripts" which are short visualizations meant to relax children. This is very mainstream and a great way to introduce children to relaxation. Great emphasis on breathing however, to teach the mechanics of proper breathing, I have coupled this with Indigo Dreams and The Children's Awareness Curriculum. The kids really enjoy relaxing and love talking about the visualizations in Ready Set Relax. Great way to teach children, especially if you are short on time.
Just right relaxation tool.......2004-11-20
This book offers many wonderful tools to help children relax, reinforce their value, and visualize a fantastic episode of imagination. It is organized and cross referenced which makes it easy to quickly find just the right message of the day. I teach yoga to 5th graders who now beg for "relaxation at the end of class". Some of the kids have ADHD, autism, and other learning differences. This has been one tool that will never get old or redundant. It spans a broad age range. I have coordinated some of the stories a week before big achievement tests which seems to help the kids with a bit of empowerment. Nothing speaks to the success of my class like having children ask to borrow my books, DVDs, or my music. I would like to know of a better book or another book like this one since it has been such a huge hit with everyone.
Ready, Set, Relax enriches education..........2000-01-05
Ready, Set, Relax provides teachers and parents with an important resource for helping young children learn valuable self-regulation skills. Jeff Allen and Roger Klein make us aware that learning requires both physical and mental preparation. By introducing physical relaxation and positive mental imaging skills into the classroom environment, children develop essential learning prerequisites, increase self-confidence, and enrich creative interactions between teacher and child. The lessons of Ready, Set, Relax should be eagerly integrated into every elementary school curricula.
This book helped my child overcome fears........1999-09-05
We ran through the "Ready, Set, RELAX program when our child had a serious illness. It helped him overcome his fear of treatment and helped reduce the anxiety level of our whole family. I am hoping for a sequel.
Wonderful.......1999-04-11
This book is a fantastic alternative to customary means by which you raise your children. I wish my own parents could have read this fine book 40 years ago.

invaluable insight.......2007-04-30
All the years I've been "against" public school, they were for reasons I'd researched, or came from my own bad experiences and those of my child, and other reasons I just "felt" inside but couldn't explain... I'd certainly built a case for myself as to what was wrong with the whole environment. But I still had never seen or imagined what Mr Holt saw through the eyes of a teacher (yet I could relate it to my entire experience at public school and knew he was speaking the truth). As I read his book it just filled in so many of the vague holes I'd felt as to why I didn't like public school but couldn't explain why. What invaluable insight into what really goes on! It was truly a turning point in my resolve to homeschool. I wish I'd read this years earlier.
Informative but............2006-11-05
After spending a year volunteering weekly in my sons class and then reading this book I found that what the author observed was exactly what I too saw in the classroom. If you've never spent alot of time in a classroom you would find many things in this book hard to believe. The sad truth of the matter is that it's all true. This book provides a wonderful insight into the classroom, but it is hard to get through. This is the sort of book that will put you to sleep if you aren't fully alert, but if you can get through it you will be glad you did.
I prefer his later work.......2006-03-31
This book is one of John Holt's earliest published works. At this stage he still thinks that schools are essentially very good (and very necessary) institutions with a few things wrong with them that it is quite possible to fix. Later he becomes disillusioned with that notion, and begins to advocate alternative schools. Eventually he realizes that the very nature of schooling and the assumptions it is built upon go against some of his most dearly held ideals, and he begins to advocate 'unschooling,' starting the publication "Growing Without Schooling" and the organization Holt Associates.
I think that this book is a valuable read if you want to understand the evolution of Holt's thoughts about education, but I would also recommend you take a look at his later works. Personally, I'm a big fan of "Teach Your Own."
A Very Good Teacher Tool.......2006-02-28
After reading this book I came to the conclusion that it deserves four stars. I recommend this book for teachers and students because the information that this book contains gives us a better insight about students on a more intellectual level. This book will help both teacher and student to reach a higher level of understanding and create a better teacher-student relationship. John Holt also points out many diffrent problems in classrooms and how he as a teacher has handled all these problems.
The Truth.......2006-02-28
We think that John Holt's book shines a clearer light on how children, teachers, and schools fail. He gives great examples on how teachers go wrong and gives even better examples of how they can improve their teaching skills. We recommend this book to all teachers and parents. By reading and understanding this book, changes will be made in the classroom and the outcome will be greater.

Book Description
Significantly expanded, updated, and improved with 50% new material, this is a comprehensive review of scholarly research and theory in men’s studies. No other book can approach it in its coverage of the volume of men’s studies research, its provision of a theoretical context for understanding the research, and its boxed features--most of which highlight the human aspects of the subject matter. Organized in three parts, the book offers a view of masculinity from a wide variety of perspectives. The first two chapters provide an introduction to contemporary concepts of men and masculinity, as well as the scientific study of sex and gender. In the second section, these concepts are applied to the major schools of psychological theory: psychobiology, social learning, humanism/existentialism, psychoanalysis, and socioculturalism. The last part of the book summarizes “men’s issues:” work, emotion, relationships, physical health, mental health, violence, and the changing definitions of what it means to be male in contemporary society.

Excellent Overview.......2006-04-21
I teach a university course on Male Identity Development, and use this as requried reading. It is the best, and most balanced overview I have found regarding the social science of men and masculinity. It does not take a "male bashing" perspective, nor is it defensively pro-male. Rather, it looks at masculine development from a number of perspectives. So many other books on men seem to have an "axe to grind", but this tries to stay objective. My students also find it to be quite readable. I look forward to a 3rd edition.

Book Description
This book focuses on the issues of life cycle development from a multicultural perspective. It explores the impact of cultural influences on development within each of the life stages and dimensions of development and utilizes a non-Eurocentric approach. It introduces the reader to several theories, research studies and applications and examines the traditional research and modifications as a result of diverse cultural approaches. Human Development in Multicultural Contexts offers an important and significant alternative to other human development books that omit cultural variables. It helps to provide a balance in life with respect to resources, fresh perspectives, and techniques. This multicultural book is information for a psychology of all people. A non-Eurocentric approach integrates the scholarship of developmental psychology research from several cultures. It identifies historical and contemporary contributions and experiences and deals with relevant developmental issues such as vocational development, eating disorders, and dating violence. Ideal for anyone interested in developmental psychology of the developmental stages of life from a multicultural perspective.
