Tribal Bellydance in detail.......2006-01-30
This book includes interviews, numerous photos and details about all aspects of costuming and techniques for Tribal Bellydance. I first heard about this book from a friend who teaches Tribal in my area, then later found out that this is a must-have book that nearly everyone who dances tribal style owns. The author has put together a really complete reference book which dancers appreciate. The author obviously put a lot of hard work into this book.
Great one of a kind book!.......2005-08-30
From exploring the roots of tribal to giving credit to the upcoming pioneers, this is a fantastic tome. I have met several of the people in the book, and they are all absolutely lovely, and all had praise for their experience with the book's creation. From basic moves to types of music, makeup and anecdotes, this book truly covers tribal in a well informed, factual manner, without apparent bias. It is also full of photographs--my only wish is future editions have color photos of these gorgeous costumes. I also have to say this book is full of giving credit where credit is due, which is a great thing to see!
Wonderful Introduction to Tibal Bellydance.......2004-03-31
I love this book! I have been taking classes for about a year in Cabaret bellydance and was curious about Tribal style. I bought this book and I am hooked! It is full of fascinating info, including costume and basic movements. I would still recommend taking classes and maybe purchasing tapes or DVD's as I do not believe you can learn it all from a book, but this book has it all:)
Thank you Kajira Djoumahna for a wonderful book. Check out Carolena Nericcio's websight for "Fat Chance Bellydance" and the authors web sight for "Blacksheep Bellydance" and belly dance superstar Rachel Brice's "The Indigo"

great instruction and photos.......2007-05-11
this is a really good book. great visuals, including arrows showing the directions your head, arms or hips should move. good descriptions on what to do. the bellydancers have nice outfits and it really covers all aspects of belly dancing. i've taken a class before and find this to be a great refresher with some new information too. this would be a good gift for someone interested in bellydancing. enjoy!
Great supplement to Bellydance Introduction.......2007-01-23
This book can stand on its own as training for belly dance, but I haven't used it that way because I do Dolphina's Goddess DVDs as workouts. The photography is excellent and the descriptions of the moves make sense. If you want to refine your moves in bellydance DVDs, this book provides good tips. It also includes routines, so you can perform belly dance to your own music if you want to expand beyond the traditional DVD soundtrack.
Visually pleasing. The models and settings are lovely, but I didn't feel as if their level of fitness was out of reach, which is nice. There are several models, including Dolphina.
There is a brief history of belly dance in the beginning, but the emphasis is on how to perform moves and the routines.
This is actually a very useful book.......2006-11-25
I used this book as a filler to lessons while I was traveling and I have to say that it did the trick. Dolphina makes it clear the moves she is expecting you to do and makes suggestions to practicing them that certainly made for a good physical and mental workout. I really love the photography and I like how the book progresses, containing 3 sections so that you can build up to a more difficult workout. The combinations are lovely and put together a very pretty dance once you are complete with drills. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is going to be without lessons &/or dvd access and doesn't want to lose their momentum.
Bellydance.......2006-07-27
This book is very helpful and I love the format! I just need to get off my tuff and apply myself. I read through the book and it is marvelous.
Beautiful photography & clearly written text.......2006-01-30
Dolphina's done a great job with this clearly written book packed with beautiful photos!

Book Description
For those wanting to shake and shimmy their way to a firmer body, this comprehensive guide to belly dancing offers instructions on how to make the most of the hot belly-dancing-as-fitness trend. In addition to guiding the dancer to a trimmer waist, this how-to book helps put women in touch with their sensuality through the alluring moves of this ancient dance. Specific guidelines for pregnant women who wish to stay strong throughout the nine months and regain their prebaby belly are included. The history and culture of the art is also explored with a celebration of the pulsating music and shimmering costumes that make belly dancing a joy to watch. In Cairo there is a saying: "Every girl is born a dancer." With this guide, all women can be divas of the dance.
Customer Reviews:
Good book however..............2007-05-25
This book is full of great information on the origins of belly dance, dance styles, moves and costuming however....it's virtually impossible to read the wealth of material contained on it's pages thanks to the use of dark and pastel colored photographs and patterns as a background for the print!! (Print which also wildly varies in color and sometimes all but disappears in the background altogether.) It's a real shame that the editors didn't take that problem in consideration at the time of publication because they have made an otherwise wonderful little book very difficult to enjoy.
good overview of bellydancing.......2007-04-12
This was a beautiful-looking book, though smaller in size than I had anticipated (not coffee-table sized but a smallish square paperback). It's pretty cursory in its review of culture and costume. Lots of details on things like instruments and drum patterns (in fact, a bit too much detail). I was expecting more clear delineations between the different styles of dress per culture, so I was a bit disappointed in that area. And I have to echo what another reviewer said, that the print is a little hard to read because of the choices in font and background colors in places.
Great book for Belly Dancerd.......2007-01-06
Has photography as well as the history. A great book.
A decent overview.......2007-01-03
This was a decent overview. I wish it detailed more about costumes, but as is life. I am not sad I purchased this item.
basic info, but difficult to see printed words.......2006-12-05
I'm a begining bellydancer & wanted something to give me some basic info in the history & culture of bellydance. This book does that. There is a lot of info in the book. My complaint: Some pages are very difficult to read due to the fact that the words are printed with a variety of colors onto background photos. I had read that comment in another review before I bought my copy, but didn't realize how much of the book was printed that way (more than half) & how difficult it would be to read (very difficult), make sure you have good lighting. Also the font size used is a little on the small side. Might have been easier to read with a larger font. Should be able to find same info in an easier to read format.

LEARN BELLY DANCING MOVES WITH THIS EASY TO UNDERSTAND ILLUSTRATED BELLY DANCE BOOK. "Nefertiti presents BELLY DANCING the Basics" A 40 Page, Flip Style, Illustrated Book For Easily Learning Basic Belly Dance Moves. Detailed Instructions for 20 Basic Moves, Veil, Floor Work, and Zills. This book was created for my mother "Nefertiti" (AKA Doris Demarest-Nemith). She owned Nefertiti's Belly Dance Academy in Phoenix, AZ from 1974 to 1981 where she taught me to dance and teach. She had the pictures taken in 1975 and was going to create a instructional book, but for reasons unknown she never did. With her help, I put the words to the pictures, she reviewed it, and blessed before her passing in 1999.
Customer Reviews:
A Handy Reference.......2005-01-15
I recently purchased this book and it was exactly what I'd been looking for. A handy reference with some pictures of some of the basic movements.
As an intermediate dancer that is between teachers, I'd been looking for a simple guide that would serve as a handy visual reference and reminder for my practices.
This book is laid out in a very clear and straightforward manner and could serve as a very useful tool for someone who already has taken a few classes to refer back to.
The format is very clear and easy to read even while standing with the book on a nearby chair, and the sprial binding is convient to allow the book to be folded over or even hung over a chair back. I look forward to being able to add my own notes on the pages in the back and if I only had one request it would be for more blank pages or even a pocket so I could put more notes in to make this into a personal reference book.
I wouldn't reccommend this to someone who had never taken or seen a belly dancing class and I'd definately put a note of caution on the Turkish Drop, and indicate that it is an advanced move, but otherwise this is an excellent reference book for someone with a basic knowledge of belly dancing.
REQUEST BY DEMAND, LOWER PRICE!.......2004-06-12
The author was able to lower the price to accommodate the wishes of her customers. By buying in bulk the author was able to lower the price just in time for the holidays. Reviewed by SHIRA at http://www.shira.net/bookrvws/nefertiti.htm - the best resource on the Internet.
Plus upgraded with a Table of Contents (per Shira request), editorial fixes, new glossy white paper, and an easier to use plastic-wire spiral-bound.
Hope you enjoy the upgrades.

not much there.......2004-05-28
This book provides very little information even for a beginning dancer. Considering the lack of content it is much too pricey.
AuthorZone.Com Book Review.......2003-07-17
Back in 1975, a dancer named Nefertiti (Doris Demarest-Nemeth) in Phoenix, Arizona began working on a "how to belly dance" book project. For unknown reasons, she did not complete the project. Decades later, her daughter decided to use the photos that had been taken for the book, add text, and finish the project. This book is the result.
The format of this book is that of a simple "how to" manual for beginning belly dance. There are about 20 basic moves taught, a page on posture, a page about finger cymbals, and a few veil ideas. Some of the moves include hip bounce, half moon, hip thrust, hip shimmy, sit-kick front, sit-kick side, sit-kick back, lean-kick, single-leg shimmy, backward figure 8, shoulder thrust, shoulder shimmy, shoulder roll, pelvic tilt, belly roll, head slides, and snake arms. The veil work section talks about how to wrap it, how to remove it, and how to do a few simple moves. The floor work section talks about how to do a Turkish drop (which seemed a bit odd for what is otherwise a beginning-level book), the sway, the half wedge, and the full wedge. For each item taught, there is a picture of Nefertiti accompanied by several bullets with explanation and a few tips. In some places, diagrams accompany the photo to offer further clarification.
Since the photos of Nefertiti were taken in 1975, the book definitely has a strong retro flavor to it.
Although I think it would be difficult for someone to learn how to belly dance solely by using a book, it can be helpful to use a book when the explanation offered by your teacher or video on how to do a certain move isn't entirely clear. A book like this can offer another way of describing the same move, and help someone who is struggling see it in a different way. For belly dance teachers, this sort of "how to dance" book can also offer alternate ways to describe a move when teaching it.
Its Good Points
This book is well suited to readers who want something simple and not too intimidating to assist with their belly dance study. The photos and simple large-font text would probably be particularly appealing for younger readers, or for people who want to ease in gently with the basics, without digesting too much at one time.
For the most part, I found that the descriptions of the moves worked well for me. The text was simple, and it was very easy to tie descriptions to the pictures. Many of the photos illustrating moves were augmented with arrows, lines, or diagrams to help show the direction of motion.
I was charmed by the fact that Sherry honored her mother by completing a project that her mother had begun in 1975. It's a lovely tribute, especially since her mother passed away in 1999.
The spiral binding conveniently lies open to the page of choice, which can be useful when studying a particular move.
On her web site (see "Where to Get It" below), Sherry offers sample pages from the book under "Online Lessons". This provides an opportunity to preview what the book looks like before buying it.
On The Negative Side....
With only 40 pages and a large typeface, the book is fairly short. It might have been nice to have either an index or a table of contents identifying page numbers for each move.
The plastic spiral binding is a bit of a nuisance when the book sits on the bookshelf, because it takes up more space than other kinds of bindings and it's impossible to tell by looking at the spine which book it is when it's sitting next to other spiral-bound books.
There were a number of typing and grammatical errors. For example, on page 8 is says, "This is knowing as Parallel Position", when it should have said, "This is known..." It would have been helpful if Ankestamen had asked someone to help proofread it.
In Conclusion
It's hard to learn how to dance from printed text. However, if you have access to either a teacher or a video that demonstrates what the move looks like in motion, the written text in a "how to dance" book like this can help clear up confusion. Sometimes, it's helpful for either a teacher or a student to have more than one explanation on how to do a move, and this type of how-to book can help with that.
