Book Description

Even if you've never attended a wedding in the South, you'll find laughter in the pages of this deliciously entertaining slice of Southern life and love, complete with recipes, advice, and a huge dose of that famous charm

"In the Mississippi Delta, funerals bring out the best in people, while weddings, which are supposed to be happy occasions, bring out the worst." So say Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays, authors of the bestseller Being Dead Is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies' Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral, who turn their keen eyes and sharp wit from the end of the life cycle to the all-important midpoint. For anyone planning, participating in, or attending a wedding (Southern or not), this book will amuse, entertain, and provide advice for marital bliss, including:

--It's OK to peek at an etiquette book, but if you rely too heavily on it, people will think that you are not fully acquainted with what is right and wrong.
--Anything that was not done in the past doesn't need to be done now -- consider this before ordering a groom's cake, especially one featuring a fishing-tackle or golfing theme.

5 out of 5 stars Truth Can Be So Funny.......2007-05-31

Wonderfully witty - way too tame a term! - but oh, so realistic book about weddings, interspersed with recipes and tales of weddings past. I loved it and am recommending it to all my southern and not so southern friends and relatives.

4 out of 5 stars The Wedding Book.......2007-05-17

It was very good but not quite as good as their first book.

4 out of 5 stars good book & recipes- 'being dead' much funnier.......2007-05-16

I am from the South and the funeral book had me laughing so hard i - liketa died crying. this one is good and funny but not nearly as hilarious as the first one. I have childhood memories full of the green punch so that is a great addition. The recipes look good and there seems to be extra ones including alcohol, which is probably more appropriate.

I loved how they added the author's pictures in the back. The one lady-Gayden definitely looks like she is a woman from the South. However, the other, Charlotte, definitely looks as though she has left the South, as well as forgeting her cosmetic case behind. Like myself, when you leave and live somewhere else for awhile (in the north), the pressure is off to keep yourself looking well groomed and with at least SOME makeup. Bare-faced does not look good on anyone and at least makeup protects the skin from wrinkles because of the sun's damage. If still living in the South, her friends would ask her, 'Are you OK!?' knowing she must be sick or depressed in order to be seen with no makeup and her hair looking like that. Maybe that should be their next book; the pressure of appearance, shaving your legs, and makeup in the South. I'd be happy to help them out.

I was excited to see they had another book, but it is not nearly as hilarious as the first. It seems more tamed, or influenced by someone else's editing, a humorless northerner perhaps. Still a good book with good to have recipes on hand. rms

4 out of 5 stars I keep it in my Kitchen :).......2007-05-12

There are some wonderful recipes in these books...I have this one and the one about the funerals. They are kept with my cookbooks because that is pretty much what they are. Reminds me of Justin Wilsons' cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2007-04-23

I picked this book up at the library, and now I'm going to buy it. In fact, everyone in my family needs one, don't you think?
These authors have captured small-town south and I suspect the north too.
I recommend it whether you ever have to plan another wedding or just like a good chuckle while you try out the recipes.

This practical companion to The Knot Complete Guide to Weddings in the Real World acts as a stand-alone guide to the nuts and bolts of planning a wedding. The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner is where the bride and groom can record wedding ideas, create budget guidelines, check items off their to-do list, generate the guest list, store contact information for their wedding vendors, and get tips and advice on the best way to plan their big day.

Chapter by chapter, the planner walks the bridal couple through each major step: for example, choosing the reception site, picking a photographer, and deciding on a menu. Author Carley Roney and the editors of The Knot Web site have talked with both wedding professionals and hundreds of thousands of brides and grooms, and have a good idea of the necessary ingredients for a successful wedding. Most helpful and thorough are each chapter's "Questions to Ask" checklists and the "Knot Knowledge" tips, which include money-saving ideas. The book also contains a gift log, a budget tracker, and a wedding-day phone contacts sheet.

Roney offers loads of helpful advice, such as recommending that the bride and groom declare "wedding free zones" where the couple makes time for activities together that have nothing to do with planning the wedding. Each chapter also includes her down-to-earth answers to commonly asked questions, such as whether it's appropriate for a relative to host a shower or if the wedding couple should pay for guests' travel expenses. With all of its tips, advice, and organizers, The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner may just be, next to a wedding coordinator, the best way for modern couples to ensure their wedding is a smoothly run, stress-free affair. --Kris Law

What makes a perfect wedding? "[The bride] and the groom both look as though there were sunlight behind their eyes, as though their mouths irresistibly turned to smiles," wrote Emily Post in 1922's Etiquette. Great-granddaughter-in-law Peggy Post, author of the fourth edition of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette, absolutely agrees with Miss Emily. To ensure those bright eyes and smiles, she imparts thoughtful and commonsensical advice on how to plan for not just your wedding, but for all the social and familial obligations and traditions that a wedding entails.

Unlike many wedding manuals, Post includes advice for the "encore" bride as well as for the new bride. In this day of remarriages and blended families, tact and strategy are often needed to make sure feelings aren't hurt and everything runs as smoothly as possible. A chapter on multicultural and interfaith marriages addresses differing world traditions and how they can be incorporated into a touching ceremony that makes both the couple and their families happy. If you are unsure of who is supposed to do what, Post gives you clear instruction, often including a flow chart that delineates the responsibilities of all people involved in the wedding party (bride's parents throw the engagement party, best man returns the tuxes, flower girl's family pays for her outfit).

Throughout Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette are sidebars with questions asked of Post regarding an amazing array of wedding-related conundrums ("My daughter's fiancé wants to follow his family's tradition of having a money tree at the wedding. I personally find this distasteful; can I say so?"). This is a great book to find the answers for all those sticky questions. All involved in the wedding process should leaf through, get their bearings, smile, and then forge ahead. --Dana Van Nest

Book Description

Today's weddings are more complicated than ever, with new traditions replacing old, and new relationships to consider as family life grows more complex. In this new edition, Peggy Post provides enlightened solutions to all your wedding questions, showing how to manage the big decisions and the little details with consideration and confidence -- leaving you free to enjoy all the happy times along the way!

With new chapters on the groom's involvement and incorporating today's technology into your wedding plans, plus updates on destination weddings, working out wedding finances, same-sex unions, and more, Peggy answers every couple's contemporary concerns. As a nationally trusted wedding expert, she also provides tried-and-true guidelines you can count on for a memorable wedding, from announcing the engagement to budgeting for the ceremony and reception to dealing with sticky situations -- uninvited guests, last-minute slipups, avoiding tacky gift gaffes, smoothing conflicts, and more -- and bringing it all off with minimum stress and maximum style.

When used as a companion to Emily Post's Wedding Planner, you can feel confident that your wedding will be a wondrous time you'll remember with pride as a day that was joyful for everyone.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-14

I'm getting married in a couple of years, and I already had Emily Post's 16e book on general etiquette, so I thought it would be good to get the full scope of weddings with this book. I feel really stupid for that now, because the book is small, doesn't contain most of the information that the general etiquette book has on weddings, and therefore isn't something you can use separately anyway. It's completely lacking on information, and so if you have to choose between getting this book or getting the general one and having some extra information about other things, get the general one and save some money.Emily Post's Etiquette, 17th Edition (Thumb Indexed)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-05

This book has all the information you need about traditions, planning, pulling it all off. Every tiny detail brides are supposed to somehow know automatically is here and is easy to find.

Much of the book is geared toward people planning very traditional weddings - which I am not. Ms. Post gives plenty of more casual examples and perfectly acceptable informal options. The information is also presented in such a way that it is easy to modify her examples to make them your own.

This is a must-have resource for any family planning a wedding!

5 out of 5 stars Must have for any bride.......2007-04-01

This book is excellent and reviews all of the essential etiquette questions relating to any type of wedding. In these days of "do it how you want to", this book is a good reminder that there are standards that we should follow. Must have for any bride, groom, mother of the bride/groom!

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2007-01-29

I've always liked the Emily Post series, but found this book to be sorely disappointing. It does highlight some etiquette basics (e.g. do not consider a cash bar, and handwrite your "thank you" cards). But it's hardly "definitive." The book goes into extensive detail on receiving lines, but only glances over seating assignments (which will have a much larger effect on your guests' experience). It distinguishes between dress codes for formal weddings and informal ones, but says little about other etiquette differences. It also offers scant advice on the delicate manners required for less traditional weddings, like those involving mixed families or same-sex couples.

What's worse? At times Ms. Post advises plain bad manners. For instance, you should not have a different number of bridesmaids and groomsmen, as the book suggests. This has nothing to do with procession concerns (which the book cites). It is because the groom is no less important than the bride and warrants the same number of attendants (which the book overlooks). If you are concerned about traditional symbolism cast this guide aside, an American bride at a formal wedding should not wear any color she fancies, nor should the bridesmaids wear white. Also, steer clear of the book's tacky suggestions on official wedding hosting. Hosting is more than just footing the bill, and the divorced MOB should be properly listed on the invitation, regardless of who writes the check.

The list of poor and lacking advice goes on, but my patience does not. I recommend choosing a different etiquette book, and reading critically.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE for wedding planning!.......2007-01-26

I am a professional wedidng planner and there is not a book I would recommend more. I traditionally give this book as an engagement present. This is full of general as well as misc. etiquette, and questions you would never think to ask or get answered. I highly recommend!

I love this book! If you're planning your wedding and your vision is both tasteful, stylish, & classy - I highly recommend this book! I've had it for a few months now and my wedding is still 6 months away - I refer back to the book for additional ideas! Additionally, the photos are beautiful!

If you are planning a wedding, this is a great resource. It is full of ideas covering off so many different areas, including rings, ceremonies, cakes, flowers etc. The gorgeous presentation makes it an item to keep forever.

5 out of 5 stars The One Stop Shop Book.......2006-07-08

I loved the Instyle Weddings Edition. It was very thorough and nice hard cover quality. I would definately recommend this to all bride and grooms to be!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a book!.......2006-04-24

I saw this book in Amazon together with Martha Stewart's Wedding Book and since I admire Style's Wedding magazine, I decided to purchase this book. What a great find! It has ideas on every aspect of the wedding. Lots of very cool ideas. I particularly like the ideas for photos and beauty. Definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book for Budding Bridezillas.......2006-01-25

If you are planning a monster wedding (you know who you are, Bridezilla) this is the manual of choice. "In Style: Weddings" uses their format of large, beautiful photographs and snappy sections on everything from what the best man does in the wedding to how to do your makeup for the big day.

The sections are lavishly photographed. The cake chapter has pictures of fondant-iced fantasy cakes--but it also has an idea for a tower-of-cupcakes that might suit a budget affair (more on this later.)

In Style doesn't fail to include a lot of dishing about what this and that celebrity did for their wedding, which will add to any bride-to-be's dreaming about her big day. There are sections on hair, with very pretty ideas for how to make an up-do with ornaments. A section on makeup and one IMPORTANT section on dress selection. Hint: tall and big brides should stay away from those Cinderella ballgowns with the huge chiffon skirts, lest they look like a battleship being launched. Likewise, it was rather enlightening about how many celebrities these days choose to be married in what to me looks like their slip or nightie. There are hints as well for the dresses of the attendants. And a nice selection of items that could be used as wedding favors and groom's gifts.

There was less devoted to menus than I'd like to see, but plenty on the types of venues (outdoors and indoors.) There were lists for planning. And a wonderful section on flowers with photos that would make anyone drool.

While I give this book a top five star rating, I'd like to point out to the star-struck bride that weddings these days average about twenty-seven THOUSAND dollars. That's a lotta scratch, my matrimonially-inclined readers. Consider than this amount, invested and earning a modest six percent would double in about twelve years. So consider that perhaps the ideal wedding might be a pigroast under a tent with a local bluegrass band. Costing a lot less than the average. Think about how much a big wedding is worth to you before you get in over your head.

I thought this book was cute... really CUTE. There are others that are smart and others that are funny, this was cute and a decent choice for my little sister who is going to be my Maid of Honor. It talks down to you a little and it's very "girly" but it's quite fun and my sister enjoys it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Ideas for a Maid of Honor Beginner!.......2006-08-18

The friend I chose to be my Maid of Honor had never been in a wedding party before, and so I knew she'd need a little help/instruction in knowing what her duties would include. This is a great little book that has helped her be an amazing Maid of Honor. In addition, the book has a great look to it, and really isn't very expensive. In asking someone to be in your wedding, why not give them this book and ask them in an inscription inside the front cover?

I was looking for a small gift to send my bridesmaids and I came across this book. It is a fun little guide for those new to the wedding world, as some of my bridesmaids are. As a wedding novice myself, being the first of my friends to marry, it was a good heads up on what to ask of my attendants and what mistakes to avoid. The feedback from my bridesmaids has also been very positive, they enjoyed the light witty style mixed with the helpful guide. I am very glad I found this book and would suggest it to anyone who wants to treat their bridesmaids!

5 out of 5 stars A must for invitations!.......2005-01-10

I run a small stationery and invite business (Quite the InviteTM) and have found this to be an invaluable tool for my business. This book covers all possibilities. Not everyone has use for this book, but anyone who does lots of entertaining or needs to make sure their invites follow protocol, this is a must.

4 out of 5 stars the definitive guide to elegant stationery.......2003-04-18

A lovely reference book on formal and semi-formal stationery, calling cards, and the proper wording for invitations. Filled with enthusiasm after reading the book, I went into my local stationers to price some of this fancy stuff and concluded that I was better off with a computer and printer. Not that I wouldn't love engraved letter sheets, monogrammed notes, and house stationery, but it would run into the hundreds of dollars. And that's just for the letter sheets and engraved envelopes! However, it's wonderful to press my nose against the window and dream about spending my children's inheritance on engraved correspondence cards!

The sections on the content of one's correspondence were the weakest part of the book. The four-line formula condolence notes did not strike me as particularly consoling, for instance. "Miss Manners' Basic Training: Communication" and other books specific to letter writing give much better tips on how to compose meaningful messages. But Crane's remains the lofty goal for elegant correspondence.

4 out of 5 stars A desk reference with attitude........2000-12-27

As someone who got really intrigued by parchment and fancy fonts when I got married, I'm rather surprised that the only version of this book still in print is the "Blue Book of Wedding Stationery." After all, one can have a hoity-toity paper fetish without being engaged.

After a few years of hunting, I found a used of this book in a small used bookstore in downtown Seattle, and I may never give it up. Even though the editor (Feinberg is not credited as the author, and there's an introduction by Stanley Marcus) is bossy, unrelenting on some conventions and is essentially pushing Crane's engraving trade every step of the way, I'm still drawn in by the ellegance of "proper" social stationery. It's easy to take Feinberg's advice with a grain of salt: he seems to resent popular etiquette mavens who state that an extensive "stationery wardrobe" is not necessary, and that the most formal invitations are handwritten.

The introduction of this book gets into the history of paper-making and engraving, and the beginning of each section gets into either the history of the custom being described or stories behind that particular piece of social stationery.

I'm a tad disappointed by the section on calling cards -- a small fluffy book I saw on the subject once got a bit more into detail on what it meant if a particular corner was folded -- but the fact that Feinberg addresses the subject at all wins a point with me.

Other topics covered are the basic "stationery wardrobe" for both men and women, invitations to various occasions, wedding stationery (of course), greeting cards and announcements, "professional stationery," forms of address and a brief history of Crane's. The book includes an occasional example of famous social stationery, such as a 1942 Christmas card from the President and Mrs. Roosevelt.

I've been online for ten years, but I still love sending and receiving paper letters. "Crane's Blue Book of Stationery: The Styles and Etiquette of Letters, Notes and Inivitations," snooty though it is, nurtures that love like few other books have.

Chapter headings include:

1. The Essence of Etiquette
2. Social Stationery
3. Invitations to Social Occasions
4. Wedding Stationery
5. Greeting Cards, Social Announcements, and Social Correspondence
6. Business and Professional Stationery
7. Calling Cards

When planning for the big day, it's very easy to get caught up in beaded white dresses, boutonnieres, and how many platters of mini crab cakes to order, but the most important part of the wedding is the most-often overlooked--the ceremony itself. A wedding ceremony can vary hugely depending on the religious (or not) beliefs of the couple, their cultural backgrounds, and their personal preferences. The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions can help you sort through all the choices and come up with just the right vows and music for you and your intended.

Do you want the traditional "I, so and so, take thee, so and so, to be my lawfully wedding husband/wife before God" or do you want a looser style: "I love you. And I look forward to being your friend and companion, your wife/husband and lover for life"? Carley Roney, author and editor-in-chief of The Knot (www.theknot.com), strongly suggests taking a stab at writing your own vows, but if that's just too much, cull what you like from the many different styles--from Buddhist to Quaker--offered. Readings can be from the Bible or other spiritual writings, from poetry or even song lyrics. A diverse selection of writings and excerpts are included as are a lengthy lists of songs and music for before the ceremony, the processional, the recessional, and the first dance (everything from Bach's "Brandenberg Concerto No. 4" to Martina McBride's "I Love You").

Also included here are chapters on the wedding program, ring exchanges, and speeches and toasts. Interspersed are stories and pictures of real couples and how they arranged their wedding day. Meant as a jolt to your imagination, The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions helps you to put a very personal touch on an age-old ceremony. --Dana Van Nest

4 out of 5 stars Unique readings for weddings.......2006-11-10

The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions has some unique passages that are not commonly used, as well as traditional readings. If you are planning an unique ceremony, this book is worth the purchase.

The knot guide to weddings was a wonderful purchase. We have used this book so much for the wedding.

4 out of 5 stars Spotlight on Ceremony.......2006-11-06

It's great to see a book that focuses on what's clearly the most important part of a wedding - the ceremony itself. Ironically this is the part of wedding planning that's often missing from wedding magazines so a book like this can be useful. It takes you back to basics with a look at how you can personalise the pivotal part of your day with readings, vows and rituals to make your wedding as unique as your relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Beginning.......2006-11-06

This book provides a wide variety of traditions to look at when you are just beginning your wedding plans. It is great to focus on the choices you have in the ceremony amid all the choices you have to make for the reception.

5 out of 5 stars A must for religious weddings.......2006-08-15

If you are planning a religious ceremony for your wedding, this book is a must for your collection. It was helpful when writing the ceremony program. Although we chose not to write our own vows, it helped me with ideas for what I wanted to say at the rehearsal dinner. It includes ideas for all different religions and how each ceremony usually takes place. It gives ideas on how to include personal touches for your wedding. I found this book very helpful and am happy to pass it on to my newly engaged cousin.

4 out of 5 stars Plain Jane, Tear Jerkers and OMGOSH do they really say that???.......2007-05-12

Ok, I have read it ALL now! I mean, really, I understand writing your own vows (my hubby and I did) but come on! Most of the ideas in the book are rock solid and it is arranged in a way to help even the most timid bride and groom find a comfortable fit. The new twist is the ideas for the, umm, shall we say, far left among us who need to express themselves in TRULY unique ways at their wedding ceremony.

Yes, it is great for organizing, planning and laying out a service. It is full of ideas and resources to help make your (hopefully One)Big Special day truly unique. I would recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Okay book but not super helpful.......2007-03-17

This book was not as helpful as I thought it would be. I was looking for nice quotes about love that I could use on my wedding day. This book has a large section of quotes but none of them were all that great. The book gives advice on how to write your own vows but not enough examples. Not a terrible book but not as helpful as it could be.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to writing your own wedding vows........2006-07-20

This book offers a lot despite its size. There is plenty of advice on how to write your own wedding vows. The book gives you a lot to think about that helps you write your own personalised vows. This book contains many poems and thoughts so you can choose the words that express how you feel for your loved one.The book caters for everyone and it does so very sensibly without offending anyone. The book is one of the best books I've read and has so much to offer.I highly recommend it.For the price alone its a good value.Makes an ideal gift.If you dont want to buy several books you should consider this book.

Weddings is the most anticipated wedding book of the year, and for good reason: it's as gorgeous, filling, and sweet as a double slice of wedding cake. As Colin Cowie explains in the book's introduction, he earned recognition as a wedding designer by paying attention to the personalities and desires of the bride and groom as well as the smallest, most excruciating details. "Style should prevail," he says, explaining that style has nothing to do with the design of the dress or the make of the limousine and everything to do with confidence, consideration, and graciousness toward others; it's a tone everyone can respect. The typical bride and groom may not be rich, famous, or personally acquainted with famous musicians who beg to play at the reception, and the example weddings pictured in the book are conspicuous-consumption daydreams for many. But everyone wants to plan their own perfect wedding, and Cowie is a genius at the fine embellishments that can make a modest wedding more memorable and easier on the pocketbook.

3 out of 5 stars Weddings Colin Cowie.......2006-11-10

Was a bit disappointed that it was just a collection of various weddings and their stories. Was looking for more practical hints.

1 out of 5 stars Not a single thing I would do.......2006-03-04

Thank goodness I checked this book out from the library before buying it! I flipped through the whole 250-page book in literally 15 minutes. There is a ton of print in teeny tiny font. Personally, I don't care that much for what Colin Cowie has to say, I am more interested in the pictures that he gathers to give a visual image of a wedding. I didn't read any of it because it was so small and there seemed to be so much that I can only imagine how much useless filler was in there.

The pictures, what I actually care about, were of poor quality. The book was published in 1998 but many of the weddings screamed 1980s. The pictures were small, with poor lighting and lacked a glossy, professional finish.

I don't know if the point of the book was to show a ton of different wedding styles and to give everyone ideas no matter what your wedding will be - but that's not the point I got. The headings of the weddings were things like "Formal garden party", "Informal party under a tent", but they all looked exactly the same. The decorations, dresses and menus all seemd very old-fashioned with gilded angles, poofy sleeves and roses galore. There were more roses in this book than I think I have seen in my entire life. And for a girl whose wedding will have hydrangeas (which were shown once or twice as a filler with roses), it wasn't particularly helpful.

In a nutshell, I thought this was an uninspired book with poor quality pictures and too much verbiage. I didn't see a single thing that I even stopped to think, "Hm, would I want that in my wedding?", I just blew past everything because nothing was appealing.

5 out of 5 stars I got this book for a different reason.......2004-08-21

While this book is a FANTASTIC book for those who want inspiration for those starting a wedding... I bought this book for an entirely different reason. I am an artist and I am always looking for books with fantastic photography to help inspire my drawings and paintings. This book has some AMAZING photography and has some absolutely sensual moments. The mood is set throughout the book, very full of life and sensuality and unbelievably fresh. The array of flowers, the silkiness of the dresses, the ambience of the swagging fabrics, the smoothness of the linen tablecloths, it is all eye candy.

Even if you aren't planning a wedding (like me), this is a fine book for your collection and a must have for photography enthusiasts who like wedding photos.

I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful !.......2003-07-18

Great for a visually inspired person as well as having some great text to help you in the planning and execution of this important day.

Yes, the weddings that Mr. Cowie deals with are pretty over-the-top but he offers some beautiful ideas to help you decide on the type of wedding that YOU want and not what the world expects.

The text is informative and the pictures divine.

I can't wait till his next book comes out.

Thank you , Mr. Cowie , for a fun book.

3 out of 5 stars Borrow it from the library, not worth buying!.......2002-09-16

In the midst of my desperate search for ideas during my wedding planning, I grabbed a copy of this book at the local library. The pictures were stunning and the ideas looked great... But the ideas are only possible for people with fat bank accounts. His idea of "creative" and "chic" is BIG BIG and BIGGER flower arrangements topping at thousands of dollars each, probably. It's a nice eye candy to flip through... you may learn a few things and it may spark a few ideas of your own, but not worth the price tag. Buy it used or borrow it from the library. I found that the handful of Bride magazines I obtained had more creative ideas, and I could tear the pages out of those and copy them for vendors... you wouldn't want to bend a page in this pricey book.
