Cure for cancer? End to world hunger? What's left to do after the publication of Felice Newman's definitive guide to lesbian sex? Drawing on a wide range of published sources as well as her own notoriously graphic questionnaire circulated by e-mail--stunning mild-mannered office workers as it reeled across their computer screens--Newman has compiled an exhaustively thorough how-to guide for practices as exotic as play piercings and as pedestrian as oral sex. Along the way, she offers a primer in sexual politics and lesbian manners at the turn of the century. The S/M hanky code is laid out once and for all. There is even a (brief, happily brief) section on celibacy.

Highlights include descriptions of sex writer Tristan Taormino's private consultation with Betty Dodson, the author of Sex for One described as "the mother of masturbation": "I was so excited about this adventure that I nearly peed in my pants," recalled Taormino, "I was going to touch myself for Dr. Betty Dodson!" (In the end, Newman reports, "Tristan earned an A+ in pelvic thrusting, but got a big 'needs improvement' in the breathing department.") Although it sometimes skimps on the details, especially with regard to women's health, The Whole Lesbian Sex Book is so rich, inclusive, and authoritative that it invites challenge. Now inventive lovers can ask each other: "Is it in Whole Lesbian?" --Regina Marler

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Lesbian Sex Book: A Passionate Guide for All of Us.......2007-03-10

This was an excellent book. It was well researched, factual, more so than my anatomy class for nursing school. The book discusses all aspects of sexual pleasure with an open accepting point of view. This would be an excellent read for anyone wanting to achieve more pleasure and openness discussing sex with their partner.

4 out of 5 stars Book for both.......2007-02-21

I enjoyed this book, it was both interesting and enlightening. I shared this with my partner and it helped us both with giving us more of an understanding into certain aspects in our life. Good book, not only for women but for men as well to get a bit more of an understanding of women and where there coming from..

There's a reason why Cybil Shepard's character, newly out as a lesbian, is so excited about this book. It's comprehensive, clearly written, and literally contains everything you need or want to know, but may not even have known enough to ask about lesbian sex. Wish this had been available when I came out years ago. Disclaimer: The author, Felice Newman, is known to me -- as a somatic coach and sex educator, who saved our 20 plus yr relationship from LBD (lesbian bed death). As her clients and her readers, we can't say enough about how much she's done for lesbians everywhere and the two of us in particular.

5 out of 5 stars For People Who Love Women.......2007-06-16

The heart of the movement towards growing affirmation of women--their value, their rights, their future--is necessarily contained in the love women have for themselves and for each other. Any person--male or female, gay or straight, etc.--who loves women will want to see books like this that affirm and lovingly inform women who want to express tenderness and passion with other women.

There is nothing pornographic in this book, though it is plenty sexy--that is, unless 'sex' and 'pornography' are synonymous in your mind. The drawings are simple and appropriate to the text, and the large format of the book makes it easy to read.

It is a good thing that there is a growing store of titles like this one. May our sisters know a world where love is ascendant; we have a long way to go, to get to that point.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to Lesbian Life.......2007-05-10

Any woman who's curious about her own gender, or any person who's interested in learning about lesbian culture will be interested in this manual.

3 out of 5 stars For newies only.......2007-02-06

This book is arranged as a dictionary of lesbian sex topics. While it does have everything from A-Z, I personally believe this is for newies or those interested in the lesbian culture. For those of us that are already submerged into the culture and have been "full members," this book simply does not offer anything additional for us to learn from.

4 out of 5 stars the lesbian sex book.......2006-11-06

The Lesbian Sex Book was very helpful and it gave me a lot of info about being a lesbian. I would recommend this book to others.

5 out of 5 stars Packs a lot of information in 321 pages.......2006-10-23

I bought this book because it was discussed as recommended reading by Tee A. Corinne in the anthology she edited `The Body of Love'.

This guide for all things sexually lesbian is very informational. Because it covers so many topics it should be used more as an in depth overview and not be considered a step by step manual to sexual practices (although many topics covered are very detailed and extremely informative).

Excellent Illustrations and photographs through out the book

Helpful are six pages at the back of the book listing videos, novels, fiction and non-fiction books, internet sites, magazines and organizations.

Mastectomy is a topic touched upon, a future edition including information on hysterectomies as they relate to sex would be an excellent topic for an in-depth entry.

From the back of the book - A best-seller for more than a decade. Alphabetical entries tell you everything you want and need to know about sex between women, whether you're simply curious about what they do in bed or want to explore the finer points of achieving ecstasy with your lover. Whether the topic is sex practices, gender politics, relationship building, polyamory, edible body oils, or strap-on toys, this is the source for both the sexuality adventurous and the erotic novice. More than just a sex manual, however, this updated edition offers forthright, witty, and essential information about relationships, health concern, and legal and psychological issues that share the lesbian experience.

Publisher's Note - An illustrated guide to lesbian sex deals with such practices as cunnilingus, masturbation, and penetration, as well as intimacy, nonmonogamy, health, and political correctness

5 out of 5 stars I'm riding my husband and we've both never felt better.......2000-11-11

After a couple of years of begging me to do this, I finally broke down and got the book. Wow ! Once I had my harness on and the tool fully strapped in, I just took over.

5 out of 5 stars Equal-Opportunity Sex Toys.......1999-06-10

I've read a couple of sex manuals that deal with toys, but this is the first one I've seen that gives equal time to all genders--and I do mean all. The author includes information for MTF and FTM transgendered people in a matter-of-fact way. All sexual orientations are treated with equal respect as well. What a breath of fresh air!

Along with the detailed information about health, safety, negotiation, and shopping tips, there are some sexy little erotic stories that show all different kinds of couples using strap-ons. (And the illustrations are great fun!)

The book is light-hearted, educational, and very accessible. Highly recommended for anyone interested in playing with strap-ons!

Paula Martinac's The Lesbian and Gay Book of Love and Marriage is a crossbreed of a book that offers knowing, humorous insights on love in the gay lane. Crossing romantic advice à la "Dear Abby" ("Meeting Ms. Right") with practical tips on gay weddings that would make Martha Stewart proud ("Right in Your Own Backyard") and homo-child-care cues by way of Dr. Spock ("Are Grandma and Grandpa on Board"), Martinac has assembled a collage of expert interviews, statistics, personal opinions, historical anecdotes, intimate photos, and chats that, while covering an enormously wide range of interests and positions, is quite centered and focused. This is because Martinac understands that there is no one gay or lesbian point of view on any of these topics; each person and each couple has unique needs and opinions. While it does not avoid the controversial (Gabriel Rotello's belief that gay marriage can help stop AIDS) or the sentimental (Mubarak S. Dahir's mediation on what to call his boyfriend in public), The Lesbian and Gay Book of Love and Marriage manages to be both frank and funny, practical and political. --Michael Bronski

Book Description

Rich with anecdotes, inspiration, and brass-tacks problem solving, The Lesbian and Gay Book of Love and Marriage chronicles the emotional and political heart of gay commitment.  Weaving together interviews with  lesbian and gay couples and singles with the expert observations and personal testimonies of gay figures such as Candace Gingrich, Craig Lucas, Gabriel Rotello, and Cris Williamson, Paula Martinac takes you on a journey through the milestones and turning points, the joys and the struggles of gay relationships.

Meeting Mr.  or Ms.  Right: The challenges and excitement of searching for--and finding--the "one"
Seriouser and Seriouser: Taking your relationship to the next level--living together, popping the question, coming out to friends and coworkers
I Do! I Do!: From public ceremonies to private commitments--the many ways same-sex couples take their vows
For Better or Worse: The complexity of married life--in-laws, money matters, building a home, divorce, and widowhood
The Family Way: Creating your own family without a blueprint--families of choice, blended families, adopting and raising children

5 out of 5 stars Its about time!.......1998-08-23

Your local bookseller will have entire sections of books all about heterosexual relationships-- how come it took so long to get a true gay and lesbian relationship book that was this good? The good thing about this book, however, has to do with its sub-title: "Creating the Stories of Our Lives." Whereas other books of its genre seem to rest only on their author's self-proclaimed expertise, Martinac uses the book as a sort of collage. She explores relationships though all sorts of interviews and personal stories written by herself and other gay and lesbian people. This book doesn't tell you how your relationship should function, rather it tells how other relationships have, and thus you can relate your life to those in the book. I would definitely reccomend it-- Very inspiring!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Work!!.......1998-08-10

Paula Martinac and Roberta Achtenberg have done the gay and lesbian community a great service in creating this warm and complete look at the current state of lesbian and gay relationships.

I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars All About Linda & Maureen.......2000-06-03

This book is more about the author's relationship than about lesbian relationships in general. I found her accounts of her own troubles in her own relationship hard to relate to. (Her partner Maureen must be a saint!) I caution heterosexual persons and "recently out" lesbians to take much of what is said here with a grain of salt. A lesbian relationship *can* be a fairy tale *if* two women are truly in love and devote themselves to their partners' happiness. (My partner and I have done so for 14 heavenly years.) If one is forever fighting the demons of an "evil twin" within herself, she will have problems no matter what kind or relationship she's in-- and, in fact, is probably better off being single. The author should think about this before writing a book about her problems.

I also have a problem with the politically incorrect language that crops up here and there. Words such as "lifestyle" and "sexual preference" do nothing but feed heterosexual stereotypes about us. (The author states that she "chose" to be lesbian. Puh-leeze!)

If a heterosexual person desires to learn more about lesbians (bless you!), you can easily find a better book (at Amazon, of course).

5 out of 5 stars Gentle, supportive, upbeat ideas to improve any relationship.......1999-07-13

I love this book and I'm not a lesbian. In fact, I'm not even a woman. But I am in a relationship, and that's what this book is about.

Linda Sutton is wise, gentle, supportive, upbeat. Most of all, she shares herself as a living, breathing person, frequently offering her own experiences as vivid illustrations of her ideas. She even gives her partner and her daughter opportunities to make observations and suggestions of their own. All three have distinctive voices and personalities.

She offers down-to-earth advice and even measuring tools. For example, she introduces the intriguing concept of a "good enough relationship" and makes a convincing case for the value of a good cathartic fight once in a while. In a section called "Busyness," she writes that she and her partner "don't find time for our relationship so much as we make time." That one has really stuck with me.

The letters and responses are seasoned with wonderful quotes, poems, and--amazingly--beautiful color illustrations.

My wife and I both read this book, and it has already strengthened our relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Sutton has created a collage of insight and understanding........1999-05-25

After reading Love Matters I was ready and willing to take a deeper look at all aspects of all of my relationships, and I am a heterosexual! Sutton has gone deep into her life work, exposing all aspects of her relationships. I have great respect for Sutton, and her partner Maureen, for taking the risk in the hopes of opening the hearts of lesbians and all others who want more fulfilling relationships. It has been a long time since I have even read a "relationship" book cover to cover- I couldn't put this one down! Thank you, Ms. Sutton, for the funny, insightful book. Consider your advice taken.
