GREAT INFORMATION - PRACTICAL RECIPES - A LIFESAVER !.......2002-09-24
This book contains recipes that nutitionally conscious people will love -- while using commonly available ingredients. As exciting as the recipes are, the nutritional information makes this a MUST READ cookbook. LOVE IT !! By incorporating these recipes or ideas into my diet (we still eat meat) and beginning moderate exercise (1hour 3xweek) I have cut my diabetes oral medication by half in less than one month !! Doc says 6mo - 1 year to be medicine free !! (after 3 years of gradually worsening diabetes) This cookbook could save your life !
MY FAVORITE HEALTHY COOKBOOK!.......2002-08-31
Wonderfully Healthy Recipes...... use it all the time!
Best Available for Treating Lifestyle Diseases.......2002-01-19
The recipes in this book are some of the best available if you are serious about eating a healthy diet. They are not only vegetarian but they eliminate the refined oils and sugars which are such a major factor in causing diseases like atherosclerosis, heart disease, adult onset diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. They are the recipes used at the Newstart lifestyle program where they get excellent results with just diet and exercise. The recipes are delicious; we use them in our home all the time. I highly recommend this cookbook to my patients.
healthy vegan fare.......2000-01-05
a solid good cookbook for those aspiring to the vegan diet. the only drawbacks being that some recipies require hard-to-locate ingredients such as vegan gelatin and smoked yeast. Other than that a very worthwhile purchase for those wishing to eat healthy, etc.

Healthy Heart Cook Book.......2007-05-31
I am already cooking out of this delightful and tasty book.
Love this book!.......2007-02-20
Since my husband is a diabetic and a recent heart patient, I had to find recipes that were low on sugar, salt and fat. This book has delicious recipes that are very healthy for all of us. Easy to read and simple to understand.
Great Recipies.......2007-02-03
I bought this cookbook for diabetes and one other. The recipies in this book are simple, tasty foods that anyone would enjoy - foods you would eat anyway but made to be healthier! Good for anyone who loves to eat and wants to eat smarter.
This is a great cookbook.......2007-01-10
I purchased this cookbook for a friend with diabetes. She never realized how this disease would change her life. She is very pleased with the recipes and helpful hints throughout the book. Very user friendly and down to earth..
Good recipes........2006-09-02
I am not a diabetic. I got this book because of the "heart healthy" part of the title. The loaded baked potato soup is wonderful as is the broccoli soup. Those are the only 2 recipes I've tried so far, but they are well worth the price on their own, in my opinion.
I do not see sugar in almost every recipe and it is certainly not in these 2, although the carbs may be too high for some. The baked potato soup has 19 g of carbs and the broccoli soup has 8 g of carbs. Wonderful though, restaurant quality soups.

My favorite cookbook!.......2007-05-11
I got this book about a year and a half ago, and although it's not always the one I'm cooking from, a lot of my favorite and healthy recipies have come from it. Some of the ingredients can be a little tough to find, and there are a few recipes that need a little extra spicing up, but overall I've been extremely happy with everything I've made from it! The healthy eating and tips in the front of the book are also very helpful when trying to know what to feed your family to keep them eating right. It's like a mini class in nutrition :)

Customer Reviews:
Low-fat with flavor.......2001-11-24
I reach for this cookbook over and over again, and I've yet to be disappointed by one of the recipes. The comments are helpful, the recipes easy to follow, and the results are always tasty. I read one reviewers' complaints about the pealla recipe, but I've made this dish several times for dinner parties, and I and my guests have always been pleased. The book offers a wonderful way to enjoy low-fat cooking without sacrificing flavor. It truly has become the bedrock of my low-fat cooking library.
Good if you know what you're doing?.......2000-12-09
A comment on my earlier review: I was going to use the author's recipe for paella until I read it more carefully and then I found that most of it went against the grain so I didn't. I understand that recipes for paella abound and that hers may be to other people's taste but it wasn't to mine. In the name of fat reduction she suggests that if the reader cannot get Spanish chorizo, but only Mexican chorizo, the reader use "light smoked sausage" (p. 154) because Mexican chorizo is "swimming in fat" (p. 144). While it is true that chorizo is quite high in fat, there is only so much of it in any particular serving and it is absolutely indispensable. Paella would just not be paella without it! Furthermore, she uses 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves and 1/2 pound boneless pork loin chops for 8 servings, in addition to 1/2 pound large shrimp. 8 fresh clams, 8 fresh mussles (understand that this is 1/4 chicken breast half, 1 oz. of shrimp, 1 mussel and 1 clam per serving and 1 oz. pork chops), and artichoke hearts, etc. (p. 144-145), and she says to cut the chicken and the pork into CUBES! While this may be fine for some, I could not do it this way. I omitted the pork entirely, and used what I prefer: bone-in chicken thighs with skin (I would use 1 per serving)), and I left them whole. Also, I omitted the artichoke hearts which I didn't think would work well enough, and I used more saffron than she says is necessary and no matter what recipe you use, I suggest that you use saffron to taste. Also, I would not (although one could) cook the chorizo in the stockpot with the rice-I panfry it. If the way I make it increases the fat content to some extent over the way she does it (her recipe has 7 grams of Total Fat and 2 grams of Saturated Fat per serving-but at 5' 3 1/2 inches tall, I know from the website of Dr. C. Everett Koop that I can have 50 grams of fat per day, so I don't know what the fuss is about), I think that that is vastly preferable, especially since one does not have paella every day. I am wondering what to do about the other recipes in the book about which I know nothing...
Terrific cookbook with healthful recipes!.......2000-11-29
This cookbook is divided into sections each with recipes from soups to salads, entrees and desserts from a different international cuisine (French, German, Hispanic, Italian, Middle Eastern, etc.) complete with nutritional analysis for each recipe so that the reader can see just how many calories, protein, carbohydrates. cholesterol, sodium and total fat (broken down into saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsatured) all expressed in grams or milligrams per serving, except calories, and use his calculator to compute the total number of calories and/or fat grams per meal, if he needs to. There are mouthwatering color photographs of some of the recipes grouped together in two different parts the book. Last recipe I tried was for the Turkey Rolls with Prosciutto and Cheese (Italian). Because it is quite high in calories (408 per serving) I omitted some of the ingredients (flour, bread crumbs, egg substitute and bread crumbs). I liked it (although I didn't know what I was missing because I'd never had it/made it before) The author is good enough to say that it is traditonally made with chicken breasts so if you want to make it with them, you can do that too. Next on my list that looks beautiful-Chicken with Forty Colves of Garlic (French) and their Paella (Hispanic). Also Chicken Piccata (Italian),Aegean baked Fish (Greek) and Couscous with Lamb Stew (Middle Eastern). Highly recommended. Wouldn't want to be without it.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2007-06-07
My wife and I like the recipes in this book.
I recommend it
Not the normal quality recipes from AHA.......2007-05-17
I purchased this book because we have cholesterol issues in the family, and so far, I've made 3 or 4 recipes involving beef. They've been very dry and not visually appealing (with kids, this is important!:)) I've found most of the entrees have been time consuming to prepare as well, lots of ingredients. Truthfully, the only thing I'm enjoying from the book is the information in the beginning about cholesterol and how it affects your health- lots of great informative points on this but the recipes are just not very tasty. I also own American Heart Association's Meals in Minutes, which is much better.
Disappointment.......2007-05-14
I have used the first AHA Low-Fat, Low Cholesterol book since its publication. Have not had this issue long enough to try many of the recipes but, frankly, have not seen many that interest me. Having had a chance to look this book over first, I would not have purchased. If you are a first-time user, perhaps you will feel differently.
speedy delivery.......2007-04-03
Book was sent to a 3rd party, who made no comment about it's condition. Presume therefore, good condition. Delivery was excelent. Thanks
Lower your cholesterol.......2007-03-25
A wide variety of recipes that taste good and, best of all, lower your cholesterol levels to where they should be.

Great ideas for low-cal cooking.......2007-05-19
Though this cookbook does not contain pictures, it contains a lot of great recipes that are quick, easy to follow, and healthy. They have quite a bit of flavor as well, and the portions aren't skimpy (like the weight watchers cookbooks I've found). The recipes are varied and don't call for unusual ingredients - but you'll find that this also isn't your typical American "SAD" fare skinnied down. The recipes are healthy by nature, focusing on healthy ingredients rather than diet-oriented substitutes or trendy low-carb fare.
The cookbook also contains a lot of helpful information on healthy eating and what it takes to lose and/or maintain weight from a healthful, long-term perspective. This is a great addition to my cookbook library.
Great Recipes.......2007-05-14
There were a lot of good heart healthy recipes in the cookbook. I would have liked to have had a picture to go along with each recipe. Sometimes, I can tell if I want to cook the recipe by looking at the picture first.
low cal please.......2007-04-10
Great cookbook! Dieter friendly! I use this cookbook along with the biggest loser cookbook over and over for a little variety.
Truly Excellent Cookbook!.......2007-01-15
I am extremely pleased with many of the recipes in this cookbook. The cookbook is broken down into appetizers, snacks, and beverages, soups, salads, seafood, poultry, meats, vegetarian entrees, vegetables and side dishes, breads and breakfast dishes, and my favorite...desserts! Every recipe is for 4 servings, but thankfully, the book tells you what is considered 1 serving. 4 servings is FINE since most of the meals can be packaged up and eaten for lunch or dinner the next day.
I have made the beef and broccoli stir-fry, the pineapple meatballs, the shepherd's pie, the apple dumplings, the macaroni and cheese with spinach, and the gnocci with spagetti sauce. My husband and I were AMAZED with how flavorful the gnocci and the pineapple meatballs were...we absolutely loved these meals! The apple dumplings were delicious, but they were a little challenging to make...the pie filling kept eeking out the sides when I was trying to fold them into triangles like the directions said. The only one I will not make again was the macaroni and cheese with spinach. I could barely taste the low-fat cheddar cheese and I felt like I was just eating cooked noodles and spinach.
I work full time and I'm also a graduate student, so you can imagine that I don't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. There are recipes in this book that take maybe 15-20 minutes to prepare and cook, such as the pineapple meatballs. The gnocci, obviously, will take longer to make and I recommend that some recipes should be attempted on the weekend and made in bulk since you can devote more time to them.
Nonetheless, I am highly impressed with the recipes I have tried in this book! I have used it to keep myself on a 1200 calorie diet and after using it for just a week and a half, I've lost 5 lbs! The recipes are "normal"...no weird casseroles or anything here. And the desserts aren't just fruit like so many other cookbooks push...apple dumplings were fantastic and I'm going to make the mint chocolate cupcakes with devil's food cake shortly.
I recommend this book for anyone trying to eat healthier while still eating their favorites. This book has a recipe for everyone and the nutritional information is broken down for you per serving, so you'll have no problems tracking your caloric or fat intake. Buy it - you won't regret it!
GREAT.......2007-01-09
This is a great cookbook. Alot of great recipes in this. My husband loves it when I use this book.

The Healthy Heart Cookbook.......2006-11-25
I had a previous version of Joseph Piscatella cookbooks (Controlling Your Fat Tooth) I enjoyed many of recipes in this book but it was falling apart. His recipes taste good as well as low in fat which I was looking for. I gave it only four stars because the index could be much better.
