I just received this book and the receipes do sound delicious, but I am surprised to see how high in calories the servings are. Although I'm doing low-carb, I want to try to keep the calories in a reasonable range and these recipes see quite high.

I got the book because it had a recipe for corned beef and cabbage in it. As it is not St. Patrick's Day yet I have not tried that one but have tried several others and find them easy to prepare and delicious to eat. I am glad I purchased this book.

Not quite what I expected.......2005-10-08
Instead of original recipes, many of Ms. Broihier's call for using ready made mixes, ready made cookies and ready made chocolate bars...Not my idea of a cookbook... what do I need the cookbook for? I could just bake the cake mix, eat the cookies and enjoy the chocolate as is.... the rest are pretty common.... take some heavy cream and whip it with some flavoring or other.....when she does offer some original recipes, many include non low carb items like real flour etc. Even small amounts, are not part of my ingredients any more....

I purchased both low carbs cookbooks by Kitty Broihier. I am a vegetarian but still cook meat for my family, I get very bored with the same old stuff so these cookbooks have really helped me, I made the herbed top round roast and my husband and mother in law loved it. I also discovered the salads and veggie dishes in the back, I made the corn beef hash using a deli meat substitute- it was very tasty and I didn't feel like I missed the potatoes at all. As for the low carb dessert cook book I made 3 desserts for Easter (there were 21 people at my home)- pumpkin pudding, ice cream sandwich cookies, and the black forest cupcakes- trust me I am no dessert cook but these recipes were easy and yummy, I was completed in preparing and cleaning up ect... w/in @ 45 minutes, everyone tried them and loved them, there were no leftovers.
Disappointing Shortcuts.......2005-05-01
I am a serious baker, and was excited about the idea of a dessert book that would allow me to make guilt-free sugar-free cakes and pies. Guilt-free, yes, but that's about it. I don't mean to sound like a snob, but I'm not interested in cake recipes that call for Sweet-n-Low brand cake MIX as their main ingredient. I thought this was supposed to be a cookbook? I can get those kinds of recipes off the side of a box.
Fine if you're interested in quick and easy. Not very satisfying if you want to make from-scratch desserts with real ingredients. I'm afraid I'll be sending this back.

I received this book as a early Christmas gift and WOW is it fantastic. Classic desserts and creative desserts abound in this cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and the nutritional information is printed with each recipe. Even a novice like me can make amazing desserts. There is a section in the middle with great photographs to get you inspired. I made the truffles for the office holiday party - they got rave reviews. The low-carbers of the office were impressed. If you are missing dessert - this is the book for you. If you enjoy making and eating dessert - you cannot go wrong with this book!

LOVE it!!!!!.......2007-02-13
Compared to Atkins recipes (and a lot of other low-carb cookbooks I've seen), this book was nice. For once a book that didn't have "Atkins Baking Mix," "Atkins low-carb syrup" and all those other specialty items that I can't seem to find anywhere locally, and are expensive to buy online. Finally a low-carb cookbook that is cheap, delicious, is a TRUE low-carb cookbook--it doesn't have sugar and flour or even potatoes like a lot of supposed "low-carb" cookbooks I've found do. The recipes aren't super involved like I've found many Atkins recipes to be. I have to admit, there has been a few recipes, after having made LOTS of them from the cookbook, that we didn't like so much, but there are many many many that we LOVE! And I've found his recipes to be pretty accurate. I've noticed many Atkins recipes I have had to adjust a lot on the seasonings because they have way too much salt and even on the cooking process it was just too long or not long enough or way off on the temperature, which I suppose depends on the oven.
And finally, a cookbook that has good desserts that aren't extremely expensive and don't require either sugar, flour, (which is a no-no on the atkins diet, even in small quantities!) or hard-to-find ingredients. It does call for xanthum gum (a thickener) at times, which I haven't had a chance to look for yet, but I imagine you could find it at most health food stores.
I loved the first soup in the cookbook especially, Russian Cabbage Soup. It's nice and spicy and tangy with a hint of sweetness, and it has hamburger in it so it's nice and hearty. It's delicious! There are also tons of good wing recipes.
I haven't tried a lot of the sauces but the basic barbq sauce is awesome.
I also want to add that I've been doing Atkins for 7 months now, and I've lost 67 lbs. I have 38 to lose. This cookbook has helped tremendously because it has lots of practical ingredients and yummy recipes, so it has been easy to eat a big variety of delicious foods and keep from getting bored.
A Great Low Carb Cookbook.......2007-01-18
I'm pre-diabetic and have to watch my carbs and I've found this cookbook to be a big help. I was surprised to read a review that called some of the recipes bland--this is the only cookbook I've ever had where I didn't feel compelled to "improve" on the seasonings. Either the author and I have identical palates or he worked on these recipes a lot to get the taste just right. Like another reviewer, I found the frequent use of artificial sweetener bizarre in theory, yet in pracice it always seems to work. When I've left it out I've actually noticed the lack--bizarre!
Another plus about this cookbook, to me, is that his dishes won't break your budget. I would love to eat South Beach every day but I can't afford mahi mahi and steak every night! Alex Haas has lots of recipes for low cost ingredients--cabbage, chicken wings and thighs, etc.
My only criticism is that this book is all about the meat. If you aren't interested in a lot of great meat recipes (although his cole slaw recipes are almost worth the price of the book), you might want to look elsewhere. I really would give this 4 stars because of that but it doesn't seem fair since it doesn't promote itself as a vegetarian-based cookbook. I'm not crazy about eating so much meat, but at least he makes it taste really good!
So if you're looking for a bunch of tasty, inexpensive low carb recipes with great details on protein, calorie, fat, and carb counts, get this book. It's especially good if you're diabetic--I used to have to look these kind of numbers up myself in a separate book and it was a mighty pain. This is one of my most frequently used cookbooks--I think it's a winner.
Excellent Recipes, lots of variety.......2006-02-28
I have quite a few low carb cookbooks and this is one of the best. There is alot of variety and recipes are easy to cook with items found in any grocery store. I especially like that the calories, fats, carbs, proteins, etc are broken out for each recipe. Some low carb cookbook only provide the carb values for their recipes.
Excellent recipes (but hold the sweetener, please!).......2006-01-03
The Good: This cookbook has the essential for a good cookbook: the food you make tastes good. I haven't found a lemon of a recipe yet, and they all look good. Moreover, this author avoids the common trap of relying heavily on bizarre substitutes for flour and cornstarch. The recipes are almost completely free of strange ingredients. Just good veggies, meats, and spices.
There is no baking section (a good thing in my book, because low-carb baking sections inevitably rely heavily on the aforementioned bizarre substitutes). The excellent dessert section consists mostly of rich, simple desserts that don't rely overmuch on sweetness. Good for when you want a little something satisfying at the end of a meal without eating massive amounts of Splenda or aspartame. The section on cheesecakes is also notable, with several approaches and several flavor variations.
There's also an extensive condiments section: ketchup, chili sauce, lots of variataions on barbecue sauce, several Asian sauces.
The Bad: Nothing, really.
The Weird: As I scanned the cookbook, I found recipe after recipe calling for sweetener as an ingredient. (I don't mean in the dessert section, either.) I was intrigued enough to actually count: 14 out of 20 soups, 17 out of 18 salad dressings, 18 out of 19 salads, 41 out of 75 meat/fish/chicken dishes, 10 out of 16 veggie side dishes all call for some quantity of "sugar equivalent sweetener".
Now, some dishes do require sugar or sweetener, but these counts seem excessive. Some condiments do too - ketchup, barbecue sauce - but what kind of nut puts sugar (or sweetener) in guacamole???
Recommendation:
Great recipe book, especially if you're put off by use of odd substitutes in low-carb recipes. Just treat the sweeteners as "optional" in most of the recipes.

All low carbers should have this one on their bookshelf. Great recipes and helpful hints. I use it every week. To many good recipes to make any one recommendation. Check it out.

I have many recipe books but this one I keep going back to. The recipes are easy to follow but I was looking for something fast and great tasting. This book has it. The absolute best recipes are Filet Mignon with Portobello Sauce, Veg. Stuffed Chicken and the Turkey Enchiladas and they can all be prepared from start to finish in 30 minutes. Some of the recipes are not low carb but this is still a great book.

Delicious, healthy recipes! I have tried many recipes from this book and continue to go back to it. Most "low carb" book have no respect for actual calories and are full of full saturated fat dishes ("oh no, not the tomato, but pile on the butter!" kind of philosophy). This one has low cal dishes that are easy to prepare and always come out tasty. Easy every day ingredients, full nutrition info, broken into categories (eggs, meat, seafood...). Great book. Highly recommend!
Only Cookbook You'll Ever Need.......2004-02-21
This is an excellent book! Easy to read, 7 pages of unbiased useful scientific information, carb counter chart, non-extremist, 30 pages of all day meal plans, baking tips sheet, and 200 pages of really great recipes in 8 categories such as appetizers, salads, desserts, side dishes and different meats. All this and it's inexpensive. (I plan to give it as gifts to my friends, too.) Helps you balance carbs/protein/fats at any age or activity level. I hope this can counteract the very lame negative comments others have made about this wonderful book. Check it out for yourself!
Diabetic, maybe - NOT LOW CARB.......2004-01-14
This would be a good cookbook for diabetics who still eat flour, potatoes and sugar, BUT for those of us following a diet such as Atkins these recipes are useless! One recipe called for 1 1/2 CUPS of flour!!! I about fell on the floor. And a word to those people that think diets such as Atkins are all fat all the time: 1. You need to eat higher levels of fat since that is your energy source on this diet. Low-carb AND low-fat is a DANGEROUS combination. 2. Having said that, you do not eat bacon at every meal. I eat chicken, fish and veggies, too - I just don't freak out if the restaurant puts butter sauce on my veggies.

Jeez, the recipes might have a smidgen of flour or cornmeal BUT they are not laden with mayo, high fat meats, and tons of cheese like the other low carb cookbooks I have seen. If you are interested in cutting back on carbs without clogging your arteries, this cookbook is AWESOME!!!!!!!
