Not what I was expecting........2006-12-23
I guess if you don't have a clue what retro style is and want someone to patronise you about it this book would be perfect. I hated the tone of this book - words like 'cool' and 'classy' abound; the ideas are frankly, naff, and its general tips (such as 'Cheese: Especially something nice') were unhelpful to say the least. The Retro Fiesta book is slightly better.

Popular throughout the Mediterranean, an apéritif is a drink taken before a meal to stimulate the appetite. For the French, it is also a convivial ritual enjoyed by all, a time for sharing conversation and a bit of food along with an elegant flute of champagne, a cloudy glass of bracing anise-flavored pastis, and a glass of lemonade for the children.
Georgeanne Brennan, who divides her time between Provence and a farm in Northern California, explains the chronography of the apéritif ritual. Her historical background fascinates. The stories accompanying recipes for homemade vins maisons such as cherry-flavored Guignolet enchant.
Brennan tells how to brew your own apéritifs from scratch. If you enjoy une petite verre--a drink before dining--Brennan also tempts you to explore French classics like Lillet, Dubonnet and Suze. Her recipes for suitable accompanying nibbles will enhance the cocktail hour.
Atmospheric photos give Apéritif the glow of lounging on a sunny terrace or of lingering through the lavender twilight with a relaxing glass in hand.--Dana Jacobi

Nice gift book........2001-10-18
This volume makes a nice gift for the accomplished chef. Although the title claims simplicity, I found many of the recipes not worth the effort. It is, however, a handsome book and a good addition to your kitchen collection.

Book Description
"Waiter, I'll have another."
Another cocktail, that is. Or, on second thought, make it a hundred of them. In this bright, sprightly sequel to their immensely popular Vintage Cocktails (1999), authors Susan Waggoner and Robert Markel serve up authentic recipes for more than 100 fresh classics from the golden age of libation.
Lavishly illustrated with full-color vintage art, garnished with quotes, and studded with anecdotes and cocktail histories from the era, Cocktail Hour also features lively sidebars that offer both practical advice (such as pointers for throwing a perfectly swank cocktail party) and fascinating bits of cocktail lore. Readers learn what Frank Sinatra wrote on invitations to Rat Pack parties ("Black Tie and Sunglasses Required"), which movie offers a glimpse of the Brown Derby's original bar (Mildred Pierce), and what Cab Calloway may have been drinking the night he covered a memory lapse by singing "hi-de-ho" in the midst of a song (a Harlem cocktail, the signature drink of the Cotton Club).
With completely new-but still classic-drinks, illustrations, and anecdotal material, Cocktail Hour is a must-have for buyers of the first book as well as a fine stand-alone volume for drink lovers of all varieties.

A gadfly son shatters his uptight WASP parents' veneer of civility in upstate New York by announcing that his soon-to-be-produced play is about them.
Customer Reviews:
Good fast moving dialogue with intriguing characters, .......2005-12-26
According to the John Gassner Best Plays Series, this A.R. Gurney play is included in the Best American Plays Ninth Series 1983-1992. It is excellent! This is NOT to be confused with T.S. Eliot's The Cocktail Party.
The setting takes place in the mid 70s in upstate NY, a well-to-do home of an older couple, Bradley and Ann. Their son John makes a visit home during the "sacred" Cocktail Hour and seeks his parents permission to proceed with the play he wrote about the family. In it, he will make some revelation about the family that includes something very personal he intends to clarify.
Bradley, the father, is adamant that he doesn't want this play published. He highly discourages it, refuses to endure embarrassment and offers his son $20,000 to forego it.
Ann, the mother, believes that maybe the family information would be better suited for a book, because it is less personal than a play. And his sister Nina, is upset because enough is not written about her.
This is a brilliant exchange of dialogue and interaction with characters, and with this, you gain a complete sense of this intriguing family and their share of domestic distress. ....MzRizz

Product Description
In Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the cocktail hour is not from 5:00 to 7:00, as it is in bigger and fancier places, but from mid-September to Thanksgiving (allowing, of course, for patients with chronic salty stomachs who carry on "until March, or until jail, whichever comes first"). After the dudes have gone, the Eastern girls leaving broken hearts behind them, the permanent personnel of the Hole settles down for the off-season, Cowboy, rancher, dude wrangler, ranger, bartender, and marooned shill, they live it out to the friendly mood music of the tinkle of indoor ice, the whisper of poker-hands dealt, and the low guttural cry of the ruby-throated crap shooter. It is a community of kindred souls and wonderful. The seasons move on autumn with its wonderous cocktail hour; winter with its snow up to 15 feet and cold down to 63 below, its mad elk, and the horrors of cabin fever; and finally the first thaw. And there is Mr. Hough himself, gingerly and with a certain elegance winding his way through it all, determined to live until spring, a time when the melting snow discloses the staggering crop of winter's empties in the back yard, and when staid citizens sneak out at midnight to throw their bottles into the yards of their neighbors - an exchange that always comes out even. Mr. Hough has been a willing Boswell - on a participating basis - to an engaging world. His account of this small community, high in the backbone of the Rockies, makes an enormously readable, gay and true winter's tale. --- from book's back cover
