Book Description
Tony thinks it's dumb to go all the way to Liberty Island for a birthday picnic. But that's before he understands what the Statue of Liberty means to Grandma.
Customer Reviews:
Reviewing A Picnic In October.......2003-11-23
A Picnic In October is about a family who goes to the Statue of Liberty each year on Lady Liberty's birthday. A young boy learns why his grandparents started this tradition.
Grandma and Grandpa immigrated to the United States from another country due to harsh situations. As soon as they arrived in the U.S. they went to the Statue and thanked Her for letting them intor her country. So each year since they arrived, Grandma and Grandpa bring the whole family to Lady Liberty on her birthday for a picnic as a way of thanking her.
The pictures fit the text well by helping the reader see and feel the emotions this story tells. The reader can see how important this event really was for the grandparents as well as the rest of the family.
A Picnic in October.......2003-11-13
This is a fantastic book! I use it in my 4th grade classroom in conjunction with a study of the Statue of Liberty, but it also speaks to many other issues such as immigration, respect for grandparents and patriotism. As always, Eve Bunting has beautiful illustrations that work so effectively with the text. In light of the events of 9-11, this book is even more meaningful and evoked a discussion of the Twin Towers shown in the skyline of New York.
A Picnic In October.......2002-10-19
This book is about a boy and it's his grandma's birthday. They go to see the Statue of Liberty. They have a picnic and a wonderful time. The boy hates the party. Anyway, it has the most beautiful pictures. I recommend this book to people who love the Statue of Liberty.
A Picnic in October.......2000-09-18
Tony cannot understand why every year his family has to lug picnic supplies and even a birthday cake to the Statue of Liberty. It seems silly to him to celebrate a statues' birthday. As the day progresses, Tony begins to understand what the statue represents to immigrant families such as his. This is a beautifully written and illustrated book. The text is touching and meaningful. The illustrations capture the emotions of the text perfectly. This would be an excellent book to introduce the concept of immigration or to present to a child taking a trip to the Statue of Liberty.

Customer Reviews:
In-disguise Splenda cookbook.......2007-06-08
I agree with the other reviewers that Dana has a great writing style, but overall, I was disappointed with the book. I don't use/eat Splenda and this entire book seems to be based around the use of it...IN EVERYTHING. Even things that don't need sugar to begin with have, on average, a packet or two added to the recipe. Marketing? Who knows. Low-carb does not have to mean SPLENDA SPLENDA SPLENDA! I rate the book three stars because I did get some good suggestions from the drink and side-dish recipe sections.
Very good.......2007-03-14
I love to grill, but have always felt bad about all the sugar most recipes ask for. This book uses Splenda as a substitute. So far what I've cook out of this book has been a hit with the family. Even grandma liked the stuff I was pulling off the grill.
Dana Carpender is the best........2006-03-03
I currently have ALL Dana Carpender's books. I love her style of writing. She is so down to earth. In her books, she will tell you some brands that she has tried and what tastes good and what is horrible. I have loved everything that I've made from her cookbooks and am inspired everytime I pick up her books. If you are trying Low-Carb, her books should be in your kitchen. She is great and I will continue to purchase her cookbooks as they become available. I never feel like I am on a diet when I use her recipes. Infact, I'm not on a diet...I have just changed the way I eat and think about food.
Dana's Low Carb BBQ Cookbook.......2005-09-30
Outstanding! This is the 3rd Dana Carpender cookbook I have and it is probably my favorite. Great recipes and great fun to use! I have been de-carbing recipes from my favorite BBQ cookbook and was relieved to see that I was on the right track.
Another great cookbook from Dana Carpender.......2005-01-05
I love all of the Dana Carpender cookbooks, and this one is no exception. Both her writing and cooking styles are a lot of fun, and I have yet to make a recipe I didn't like out of her books. The Chipotle Garlic Butter is already a favorite in our house, and we've only had the book a few days. The recipes are simple to follow with easy to find ingredients, and the results are delicious.

Customer Reviews:
A children's book that is enjoyable for adults!.......2007-05-16
Beautiful pictures, a peaceful read. Leave this one out on your coffee table; kids won't be the only ones who love it!
One of the best in the MiniMasters Series.......2007-04-10
This book is wonderful. The sentences are short and sweet and they rhyme, which catches my little boy's attention. This is one of his bedtime books. Other books in the MiniMaster Series that are just as good are "Quite Time with Cassatt" and "Sharing with Renior". We have all of the books in the series and these three are our favorites.
Very Cute!.......2006-03-21
A cute book with great pictures, great rhymes, and it feels good to know that it is educational too. Never too early to appreciate great art!
Excellent Introduction to Art.......2006-03-16
My daughter is 17 months old and loves this series of books. The artwork is representative of the original work and the words do a great job of telling a story for each picture in a descriptive way without "squashing creativity" for the reader.
Amazing Children's Book.......2006-02-07
My friend bought four of Julie Merberg's books for my daughter when she turned one. I love all of the ones she bought, but this one is my favorite. I love Claude Monet and the pictures in this book are some of his best ones. The words that go along with each picture, flow very nicely and relate to each corresponding picture. These are really nice to get to start to your child's collection; especially if you want them to appreciate art.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-05-21
As the mother of 2 little girls, I am finding a huge need for baked goods for all kinds of functions. So far everything I've made has been awesome - and simple. If you have children, this a great book to add to the collection!
I'm a mom and I like this book!.......2007-04-08
Like the author, I am a mother of 2 small kids and a professional chef. I work, I can cook fancy dishes with the best of them, but for birthday parties, playdates and bake sales. I have to put on a different hat and make simple, delicious things kids love - this is the book I use for that purpose. I've made a number of the recipes - the brownies and their variations are particular favorite. After I discovered the Microwave Brownie recipe, I think I gained 5 pounds, because I can now make brownies in 10 minutes from start to finish and I usually have all the ingredients in the house!
So far, so great.......2006-12-13
I received this book as a birthday present from a friend and have tried many of the recipes. So far, my family hasn't found one they do not like! The sprinkle cookies (both vanilla and chocolate) are delicious and easy to make! I've been able to swap out margarine for butter and egg beaters for eggs in every recipe I have tried. I recommend this to anyone who loves to bake. You'll find many favorites in here!
One of the books that I reach for the most.......2004-03-19
I collect baking cookbooks and I have many. This book is one I reach for often. There are a few of my favorite recipes in here. The White Birthday Cake Frosting is the BEST! I make it all the time and always get raves about it. There is also a Raspberry Cheesecake Bar Recipe that is to die for! I give this book only 4 stars because there are recipes in this book that I think are not that great. I bake frequently (a least a few times a week) and therefore I'm pretty familiar with recipes that work and ingredients that work. The recipes that are not that great are few though. No matter what cookbook you buy, you can always expect to like only so many of the recipes either due to personal opinion or the fact that it just might not be a good recipe. I recommend this book if you like good old fashioned baking. Lots of easy recipes and classic recipes. It's inexpensive and has tons of recipes.
An excellent baking book even if you are not a mom........2003-01-07
I bought this book for a gift but after looking through it I had to keep it for myself. I would say that I am a medium level cook but I think the recipes are so easy and fool proof that even beginers will have success with them. I usually do the bulk of my baking during the holidays. So far I have made mainly the cookies from this book. I was tired of having Christmas cookies that looked good but were lacking in taste. This book has solved that problem for me. For the last two years I have made all of my holiday baking from this book. The almond thumbprints with the milk chocolate ganache is out of this world. Also excellent is the cherry and white chocolate rugelach. I had never tried such a complex cookie before, you have to make a dough, roll it out and shape the cookie, but the results were outstanding. The recipe for apple pie has become my standard Thanksgiving one. Best of all are the notes Lauren writes throughout the book. You feel like you get to know her and her family. Each chapter has an introduction to it so you know what equipment or special techniques you will need. There are also confidence boosts as Lauren explains how easy it really is to make waffles, breads, cookies, etc. I have always wanted to try making homemade pizza dough and Lauren's recipe is so straightfoward that I'm finally going to give it a try. There are no pictures of finished products in this book but I didn't miss them in the least. The recipes are all simple and straightfoward. There is an emphasis on not needing to have special equipment or hard to find ingredients. You probably own all of the equipment you need and all ingredients can be found in your local grocery store. If you should ever want to go a more exoctic route, Lauren also provides an online resource guide so you can find real chocolate sprinkles or the perfect shape cookie cutter. Whenever I want to make a treat this is the first book I reach for. I recommend it to everyone.

Anything to Climb a Mountain!.......2001-03-31
What a delightful story. Italian POWs confined in a British prison camp in Kenya during World War II decide to break out and climb Mt. Kenya. Each day, from their prison confinement they view the 17,000 foot peak in the distance and are captured by its beauty and majesty. Prison is boring, with endless days and nights so anything would be better than just sitting around. How they assemble their supplies and equipment is a major work in deception. Then, their escape and subsequent journey up the mountain is nothing short of sensational. What a bunch of wild and crazy guys! An unusual adventure story, well worth your time.
The most outstanding expression of the love of climbing.......1999-04-01
A climber is captured during the war, and is brought to a camp within sight of Mt Kenya, and the only thing he can concentrate on is to climb the mountain. With all of the difficulties just to get to the mountain let alone climb it with only the crudest of tools, no maps or any other knowledge of the mountain he and two others seek out its summit. Then to try to return into the same POW camp without harming a soul is a remarkable feat in itself, and a tribute to the love of the mountains and climbing them, at all costs.

Here's everyone's favorite teddy bear song with endearing pictures by the popular illustrator of Good Dog, Carl.
Customer Reviews:
review of Teddy Bear's Picnic by Megan Fleming.......2002-12-08
The Teddy Bear's Picnic was a fairly good book. I needed to read it two times to really understand it. It would be confusing for kids under 8 years old. The way the author and illustrator showed the humans dressed in teddy bear costumes was a clever contrast to the teddy bears wearing human masks. It kept this reader guessing as to who the real teddy bears were. The illustrations were vibrant in color and followed with the authors text. Overall it was a fun and playfyul book beautifully illustrated, but hard to follow.
Beautiful book to share with your child.......2002-01-04
If you and your child (or even if you don't have a child) love the song and story of the Teddy Bear's picnic, then you will adore this book.
The text is pretty straight forward - as well all expect it to be. But the illustrations are just delightful - full colour on every page, teddies everywhere you look and getting into all manner of interesting things. This is what is so charming about this book - the sheer delight of finding a bear and seeing what it is doing - is it eating cake? Climbing a tree? Falling asleep? Avoiding the children in disguise?
It may be a difficult book to find, but it is just lovely, and well worth the effort.
A beautiful book!.......2000-07-20
"If you go down in the woods today You're sure of a big surprise If you go down in the woods today You'd better go in disguise For every bear that ever there was Will gather there for certain because Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic."
This is such a fun book to read to my kids! The rhyming verse has a nice rythem to it, but its the pictures we enjoy the most. They make you feel like you are peeking through the trees at this wonderful picnic! This book is a treasure!
A superb book!.......1999-04-28

A treasure to savor the enjoyment of living in his prose!.......1999-09-27
Like the other two Hadamuscin books that I own, this one is a treasure to read and look at. He makes a person feel enwrapped by the warmth of good times, whether in a large party, an intimate dinner or with the traditions of America and family.
It is his descriptions that I treasure and some of the recipes, though not all that I have tried work for me.
Splendid photographs as well.
Food that brings you home to mom!.......1999-03-27
Even if I didn't like to cook, this book would tempt me to try some of Mr. Hadamuscin's recipes. They are written in a clear manner, and the photographs are outstanding. Mr. Hadamuscin's recipes are a tribute to food, family and home. I've made many of his treats, and I have never been disappointed. His recipes are presented in a format such as "An Old Salem Pumpkin Supper", or "A Comforting Supper", where the entire menu is presented. All the thinking is done for you! I have many of his books, and look forward to any future publications.

A blend of quilts and recipes for hosting picnics.......2001-07-06
These new arrivals provide a wealth of projects for avid quilters and sewers. Suzette Halferty and Nancy Martin's Patchwork Picnic provides a blend of quilts and recipes for hosting picnics. From a 4th of July starred red, white and blue quilt to a blue willow pattern for a concert in the park, this pairs projects with holidays and food ideas.
Take me on a picnic!.......2001-04-08
It's been a long time since I've been on a picnic. I used to love them, and I'm not sure why we never go on them anymore. But this book is a visual picnic of quilts, foods, and color plates of antique cars and wildflowers and cello's and wild countryside with fine china and the soul of every fine picnic you have ever dreamed about. This volume is full of the kind of quilting projects I like best--practical and beautiful. There is a bee and bee hive quilt tablecloth to make for your patio and there are recipes for poached salmon and mango salsa to set on it. There's an Indian Summer quilt to spread on the ground beside your old black convertible to nibble on your sweet hazelnut pound cake. There's even a pastel dream house quilt to drag out to picnic at the building site of your new home. The book is a nice size and has full sized applique patterns and detailed color photos of quilts, accessories and country vegetation at it's peak. The directions and recipes are clear and there's a chapter at the end on quiltmaking basics. The best part of this book is that after browsing it for a lazy Saturday afternoon--it incited me to plan a picnic--maybe I'll make one of the fabric lined baskets and invite my husband to a ride in the country on his old silver wing. I've got a t-shirt quilt with dragon flies quilted on it and the dogwood and azealias are in bloom.

FOUR AMERICAN PLAYS.......2003-09-25
Four plays by William Inge all published and produced on Broadway in the 1950s. The plays are underbellies of the American dream concerning modestly incomed average Americans facing conflict in a changing social environment, each with a deep dramatic sense of the human spirit riddled softly with a genuinely comedic edge. "Come Back, Little Sheba" is a low-key story of a recovering alcoholic which rises to thunderous and violent drama. "Picnic" follows two Kansas households whose lives are disrupted when a stranger comes to town during a Labor Day weekend. "Bus Stop" concerns an unlikely wedding engagement among a group of stranded passengers in a coffee shop bus stop. Only "Dark At The Top of The Stairs" is a little less focused in it's story of a 1920s family threatened by marital discord, the play is unfortunately reliant on a shock-value incident which seems to only serve as a melodramatic device. The book includes an essay by William Inges on being a successful playwright.
A Playwright in Need of Rediscovering?.......2001-07-31
Midwesterner William Inge was one of the most celebrated playwrights of his day. No one would have blinked to hear his name mentioned alongside Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams. Today he is not much thought of, except for the four popular movies spawned by the four plays in this anthology...
Inge may or may not be "world class," but he shouldn't go ignored. He dealt with the "little people," common Midwesterners and how they lived. Inge was superb at slowly revealing the subtext of their lives--the situations and mishaps that had got them to the point where a pivotal decision had to be made and there were only one or two options to consider.
"Come Back, Little Sheba" is the first play, and the one the movie industry left almost untouched. With today's hindsight it becomes easier to understand Lola's depression in the context of Doc's incipient alcoholism, and the fact that they feel stuck with each other in a joyless middle age. As with Shakespeare, Inge would have made a terrific psychotherapist.
"Picnic" is a Freudian's dream. Inge tells a realistic story of a twentyish beauty from the wrong side of the tracks who feels trapped into marrying one of the town gentry until a sexy drifter hits town. At the same time, without compromising realism, the subtext screams with repressed sexuality. Pay attention in particular to the three schoolteachers and how they talk about the statue in the high school. Cinematically, Rosalind Russell made the best of this meaty part. When the play was "opened up" into a movie, it gained realism with excellent cinematography and outdoor settings, but lost much of the hothouse atmosphere that is quintessentially Inge.
"Bus Stop" is the most optimistic of these four plays. It concerns a likeable but socially and sexually naive young cowboy from Montana who falls head over heels in love (and lust) with a young woman trying to make a living singing in a seedy bar/nightclub. How this young bronco gets busted is interesting to watch--it's kind of an anti-screwball comedy although it ends well. Again, Inge relates his characters through dialog and you couldn't ask for a more colorful slice of Fifties Americana than this busload of strangers stuck for the night in a rundown diner/bus stop. The movie was a fine vehicle for Marilyn Monroe but except for a few scenes, doesn't follow the stage play...
Re: "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs": Without giving too much of the plot away, this play concerns a character that unfortunately has become too much of a stock figure in American fiction: the father who is too busy making money to take much interest in his children. This father, specifically, is a traveling salesman, and despite his wife's insistence on maintaining all the 1920s proprieties, the children become uncomfortably aware why Dad is out on the road more than is strictly necessary. Inge turned the pace down on this one to match the children's slower pace of recognition that the ideal moral world they had been instructed to live by wasn't always followed.
For the money "Four Plays" is a great investment. In particular, I urge anyone with an interest in American theater to buy it. With plays that are 40 to 50 years old, Inge does not read like a contemporary playwright; his product is very 1950s. To today's upper-middle-class, therapy-aware audiences, some of his Freudian insights might come across as laughably overstated. Bit simply as works of literature these plays are well worth the reading.
Heartbreak Country.......2001-05-19
The plays of William Inge depict the character of a very specific place: Southeast Kansas. The longing-for-elsewhere among the inhabitants of that part of Kansas is crafted into all of Inge's stories. Inge's gift is his awareness of that yearning and how it effects Kansans' daily lives. His writing makes it compelling and universally poignant.
Four Plays: All Great!.......2000-08-02
Mr. Inge, in "Bus Stop," has crafted a tale of first love and cynicism that we can all relate to. People jaded by life, people wanting something more, people content with their lot... it's all here.
The other classics contained in this volume are also well worth your time to read.
A superb overview of one of America's Best.......2000-07-26
William Inge certainly has been overshadowed by his contemporaries Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller and yet he was certainly their equal in many ways. Williams, a close personal friend to Inge who suggested he enter the playwrighting profession, even said that Inge was his favorite. And although his work does lack the dense poetic symbolism of the aforementioned playwrights, Inge grounds his characters in true spare dialouge and often heartbreaking simplicity that deceptively hides complex characters.
Proving to be easy stagable and ultimately actable, Inge's dialouge develops out of carefully drawn characters enacting direct and clear objectives. All the plays represented here also feature opportunities(especially "Bus Stop" and "Picnic")for strong ensemble work. Having both directed and acted in several productions of Inge's scripts, I can say from experience that Inge's language connects easily and brilliantly to the actor.
Inge managed to make art that is thouroughly accessible while being most personal. His plays all occur in Kansas and the midwest and yet they are about all of us. Granted this collection would be more complete with his Academy Award Winning script for "Splendor in the Grass", but as it stands, this is a great collection from a great playwright who deserves respect as one of America's finest dramatists. Five out of five stars.
