Customer Reviews:
Heavy on the pics, light on the science.......2007-06-17
This book is good for the pics. I have not tried any recipes yet. The equipment is way too expensive and out of my budget for the next few months. They look good though!
Shannon is very light on the science. All the raw food books in the bookstore (Barnes and Noble, Borders) make the claim that 'we need enzymes to help digest food' (page 3). The human stomach contains an acid that aids in digestion. This acid would render the live enzymes inactive therefore defeating the purpose of eating raw food for the enzymes! I agree that incorporating more foods in their natural state is beneficial, but this raw food movement needs to have a registerd dietician write a book, then I will believe all the hocus pocus.
A Must Have for Anyone "Raw".......2007-06-12
Excellant book for those new and learning about raw foods and nutrition. Excellent resource with information about food combining, Tools, Basics, Sprouting, Storage, etc. The recipes require a little more than handful of ingredients but that is what the "Gourmet" title suggests. If you don't care for the elaborate recipes, get it for the wealth of infomation it contains as a raw food resource.
Easy and tasty recipes!.......2007-05-09
This book has really good recipes and also some valuable information about sprouting and digestion times.
I use this book all the time. Nice pictures too!
A Classic.......2007-04-04
Nomi Shannon, one of the first "seerers" to embrace wholly the raw foods, living foods lifestyle, after attending a session at the Hippocrates Health Institute, and then working and educating there, has gifted us all with one of the best living foods recipe books ever written.
"The Raw Gourmet" is the standard by which all else are measured, in my opinion, still.
Easy to follow, with recipes that not only delight the palate, but the purse and time allowance, and offer incredible images so one can actually see how splendid the meal will look as well, Nomi has captured the beauty and ease of raw, living foods for us.
A well-known proponent of natural health and healing, as well as a certified Hippocrates Health Educator, Nomi is an expert upon whom I have relied much over the last ten years of my own living foods lifestyle. I always highly recommend "The Raw Gourmet" to my clients as well.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful condition and fast arrival!!.......2007-06-26
This book had to have been brand new, it's perfect and the delivery time was fast, the condition it arrived in was pristine. Thank you SO MUCH!! A+++
Inspiring and Beautiful, but.............2007-06-03
First off....this book is a beautiful book. I will also say that it is inspiring. Seeing the gorgeous photographs of the recipes makes you realize raw foods are more than lettuce salads. For the pics, and inspiration, I would recommend the book.
Here's the "but". Many of the the recipes were not to my taste.....either tooooooo salty, toooooo oily, tooooooo much, as in overkill, on some of the spices. Don't get me wrong, I do love flavorful food...and when you're preparing raw foods alot of the volume/amounts of liquids, oils, spices depends on the main ingredients as to how much you will need to add. Just be aware of this if you follow the recipes in this book exactly as written....taste test as you can in the process.
[...].
If this is NOT your ONLY raw, living food (un)cook book, get it. BUT, don't let this be your only or your first. Not all of the recipes in this book "suck"; however, I would recommend any of the following books for the recipes before your purchase Rawvolution:
Raw Food Made Easy for 1 or 2 People, Jennifer Cornbleet
The Raw Gourmet, Nomi Shannon
Ani's Raw Kitchen, Ani Phyo
Living on Live Foods, Alissa Cohen
From my perspective, any of those will give you a better start to raw, living foods. Also, you'll get an understanding of what ingredients are good for crunchy or creamy, and options for sweetening, thickening and thinning so you can begin to create your very own fantastic recipes.
Juliano Brotman's RAW book is also very pretty and inspiring.....but there are definitely errors in several of the recipes.
Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to experiment....and do enjoy the renewed health and vitality that you are sure to experience by, at the very least, adding more "raw food" to your diet.
Bon Apetit
Delicious cookbook!.......2007-05-19
Beautiful pictures of delectable food. That it is healthy and vegan is a bonus. Add this to your bookshelf. YUM
I Love it!!.......2007-05-16
This book is perfect for getting started with raw food preparation. The excalibur food dehydrator is wonderful.
Great Recipees.......2007-04-24
I love how simple and diverse the recipes in this book are. It really has helped me in my raw food journey, especially in the beginning.
My advice is to watch the salt. The "No Bean Hummus" requires way too much salt (2 1/2 tsp) and you only need about 1 tsp or you will have something that tastes like play dough! Other than that, that dish is very good.

Alive in 5.......2007-06-14
This is a great book for those who want a quick, healthy meal that looks good and taste YUMM too. Bought this book for my daughter who has been doing the "raw lifestyle" for 2 years now. She loves all the easy to make recipes. Angela Elliott(the Author) makes the process so easy that even a person who can't find herself around the kitchen (like my daughter) could even create a great looking meal. Gourmet without the works. What a concept.

You call this gourmet?.......2007-03-27
I think the title of this book is quite misleading. I'm giving it two stars because I think the author is representing it as something it's not: "gourmet food".
While the recipes are not complicated, most of them are far TOO simple. Over and over, I kept asking myself, "for THIS I need a recipe book??" For example, "Cucumber Pizza", which sounds intriguing, is nothing more than chopped olives on slices of cucumber. "Scrambled Eggs", which sounds like something you wouldn't find in any ordinary raw food recipe book is -- are you ready for this? -- 3 ripe avocados mashed in a bowl, add salt and pepper! The "salad" recipes are the most basic of salads ... if you can chop some vegetables and lettuce into a bowl, add some lemon juice, olive oil and your favorite seasonings, you already know how to make most of the salads in this book.
There are several different nut milk recipes, each with a fancy, delicious-sounding name, but they're all the exact same recipe ... only the kind of nut you use is different.
Many of the recipes call for the pulp left over from making nut milk, and some of the soup recipes require nut milk. So unless you've taken the time to make nut milk, and have saved a supply of the pulp, you're out of luck.
One problem I have with many raw food recipe books is the inordinate amount of nuts, seeds and avocados called for. One recipe in this book calls for 5 avocados to make a dish that serves 3 people (just about all the recipes in the book make 3 servings). A taco recipe calls for 2 cups of soaked sunflower seeds in the pate', plus an avocado in the filling, and another cup of sunflower seeds to make the "sour cream" topping ... serves 3. I don't like gorging on fats, even if they are the healthy kind.
Some recipes call for coconuts, which is a no-go for me, because I don't want to have to deal with cracking coconuts and scraping out the flesh, etc. One recipe (that makes 3 servings) calls for 3 young coconuts.
I'm a big proponent of raw foods, and have a large collection of raw food recipe books. For "quick and simple" recipes, I especially like Raw Food Made Easy for 1 or 2 People, by Jennifer Cornbleet. Raw Foods for Busy People by Jordan Maerin is another favorite. But I cannot recommend Alive in 5, for all the reasons mentioned above. Perhaps if it were titled more honestly, something like "Dishes You Really Don't Need a Recipe Book For", I wouldn't have been so disappointed with it. I'm not saying there aren't some tasty combinations of foods in this book, but many of them are just TOO simple. To call it "Gourmet Meals" is misleading.
Positively Transformational Un-Cookbook!.......2007-03-04
I never really liked to 'cook', but this book shows how to make fabulous, healthy food in a jiffy without heating up your kitchen or working up a sweat! I love the unique look, feel and taste of these 'Alive in Five' recipes! Alive in 5: Raw Gourmet Meals in Five Minutes
Delicious gourmet in about 5 minutes.......2007-02-27
Alive in 5: Raw Gourmet Meals in Five Minutes My family and I really love this book.
I think Alive in Five is perfect for anyone, especially if you are a beginner. All the recipes are simple, scrumptious and really only took us about five minutes to make. I have already started to feel more confident in the kitchen.

Book Description
Annemarie Colbin learned early of the important relationship between food and health: having grown up in a vegetarian household, she spent many years integrating Eastern eating philosophies with Western habits, studying the works of everyone from J.I. Rodale and George Ohsawa to Julia Child and James Beard. With The Natural Gourmet, Colbin takes her ideas about healthful eating a step further with meals that nourish body and soul, and that are elegant enough to serve to company.
The recipes included in The Natural Gourmet are the result of a collaborative effort by Colbin and ten students from her Natural Gourmet Cookery School in Manhattan. Each recipe is classified according to the Chinese Theory of the Five Phases, making it easy to combine the various courses to create a balanced, harmonious meal. Among the delicious dishes you'll find are:
-- Curried Apple-Squash Bisque
-- Mushrooms Stuffed with Garlic and Rosemary
-- San Franciscan Pizza
-- Lissa's Homemade Black Pepper Pasta with Scallion-Butter Sauce
-- Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
-- Jalapeno Corn Bread
-- Japanese Red Bean Soup
-- Lentil Croquettes
-- Potato-Cabbage Casserole with Dill
-- Black Bean Salad with Corn and Red Pepper
-- Pasta Salad with Zucchini and Chick-peas
-- Poached Salmon Fillets with Mock Hollandaise
-- Almond Flan with Raspberry Sauce
-- Ginger Lace Cookies
-- Orange Loaf with Walnuts
-- and many more
All the recipes are in keeping with Colbin's belief that food should be whole, fresh, local, and seasonal -- and, of course, delicious. Much more than simply a cookbook, The Natural Gourmet presents a combination of food preparation and philosophy that come together in a plan for healthful and graceful living.

As the sbtitle says, "delicious recipes for Healthy,BALANCED eating". Recpes are keyed to the Five Phase Theory of eating.
This Book has the Best Tasting Wheat-Free Pumpkin Pie Recipe.......2002-10-24
This is a great cookbook. The pumkin pie crust is wheat free and it tastes great. It's always a hit at the holidays, and the pumkin pie part of the recipe is dairy free, this recipe is so nutritious that you can eat it anytime. The entire book has some great solutions. And if you are in NYC you should try to take a class at Ann Marie's Cooking School.
Very useful.......2001-09-11
This is a great follow-up to The Book of Whole Meals, because the food gets more creative. The first part of the book explains how to balance meals using the Chinese 5-Element system, which really helps in overcoming cravings for junk foods. They also label the recipes so you can figure out how to fit them into the system. I have to admit I've mainly used the book for this purpose. For the recipes, I adjusted them to suit my own taste, and found them satisfying.

Book Description
The phrase "raw foods" conjures images of food as punishment think uncooked carrots and celery, with perhaps a spinach juice cocktail as a chaser. However, uncooked doesn't have to mean unappetizing, as this combination cookbook and guide to the raw foods lifestyle shows. Gabrielle Chavez explains how to use the wide range of fruits, nuts, grains, vegetables, spices, and seasonings for delicious, healthy and healing dishes. Anytime entrees from Stuffed Portabellos with Mushroom Gravy to Thai Hazelnut Pesto are here, along with seasonal treats like Halloween Soup and basics such as Simple Sweet Bread, with ingredients expressed in both metric and American measurements. In addition to current information on raw foods' nutritional value and success as an alternative for people with food allergies and disorders, The Raw Food Gourmet takes readers on Chavez's personal journey as she discovers the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of this diet.
Customer Reviews:
Raw Food Gourmet: Going Raw for Total Well-Being .......2007-05-13
This is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to learn and begin following a Raw food diet. With easy to make recipes and just enough background on the Raw food, healthy living regime for beginners and long time Raw fooders. I highly recommend this book for every Raw food gourmet library!
Simple and Satisfying.......2006-11-15
This book is filled with numerous recipes that have become staples in my diet. It is a simple book, but it is obvious that the author is sharing tried and true recipes that are both nutritious and delicious. The book contains useful general tips about the raw lifestyle (especially tips for traveling) but the recipes are the real stars. Try the "grawnola" and your breakfast will never be boring again! This is a wonderful book by a sincere and talented author. It's definitely one of the best raw recipe books I've found.
A Great Place to Start.......2006-05-19
This book was a great help as I started out on my raw adventures. It contains a number of easy to follow recipes which have become staples in my diet. My only problem with this book is that the table of contents is not intuitive making it hard to refer back to recipes. You need to remember that the name of that Kale dish you like is "Disappearing Kale" and won't be found in the index under K but D. If the author does a second edition PLEASE make finding recipes easier! Thanks. Note: This book has no pictures (for that try The Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon which is excellent). You should also be aware that many of the recipes call for the use of a food dehydrator which is a great machine but not cheap.
"rawsome" book!.......2006-03-25
I like this book a lot, because it's well-written and unpretentious. There isn't any overhyped raw food propaganda or glossy photos of the author-- just recipes, and helpful advice for becoming and staying raw. Possibly the best part is the recipes contain ingredients you can actually pronounce AND find in stores.
Taking eating and health to a whole new level!.......2005-08-25
Gabrielle Chavez's book, The Raw Gourmet, brings a new dimension to the subject of raw cuisine!
The information is direct, well researched, and presented in a fashion that is appealing to those new to the concept of "Going Raw" as well as to those who have already had the pleasure of indulging in Raw Delights!
Her recipes lead to a delicious discovery of taste and texture, without guilt or guile!
A great gift that anyone regardless of eating choices and cooking styles can and will enjoy!

If you don't get home until six or later and still need to get dinner on the table, this is the book for you. The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet pares down ingredients to their simplest and most flavorful form. "Keeping things simple takes the frantic quality--and pressure--out of preparing a meal," says author Nava Atlas. "Simplifying helps you to slow down and enjoy the process of cooking."
Atlas devotes a whole chapter to tofu and soy products, including seitan and packaged products like soy "hot dogs" and "sausage." She also has a chapter on "Rudimentary Wraps," which includes recipes for Avocado and Ricotta Soft Tacos, Goat Cheese and Red Pepper Wraps, and the ever popular Black Bean Burrito (spice them with green chiles). Pasta is a quick and easy favorite. Keep jarred sauce on hand and you have the beginnings of Pasta with Triple Red Sauce or Pasta with Olive Sauce. Serve veggie burgers on whole-grain buns with a side of Creamy Coleslaw or Baked Barbecued Tofu and Potato Kebabs for an easy weeknight meal. Or try Asian Sesame-Soy Noodles paired with Broccoli and Tofu in Peanut Sauce.
Every recipe includes a nutritional breakdown including calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and sodium. Nearly every recipe has suggestions for what to pair the dish with and on what page to find it. This is an especially handy cookbook for time-crunched families. The food is easy, quick, healthy, and doesn't require great concentration to prepare. --Dana Van Nest

Customer Reviews:
my current favorite.......2007-05-17
I love this book! I have had it for a couple of months now and use it 3-4 times a week, no repeats yet, and I have liked everything I made! My meat-loving husband has liked everything too and that's saying something. True, everything is very simple and you are not going to get complex, truly "gourmet" flavors from these recipes. But if you are like me (someone who loves to eat, but finds cooking boring unless I am in the mood) this book is perfect--everything is really easy, quick, cheap (only 5 ingredients!) and also very colorful and so very visually appealing-- for simple, healthy everyday food I don't think you can really ask for more. You could also easily add in ingredients to make the recipes more interesting-- I have done this successfully several times. I also really like the menu suggestions since I don't always like thinking of what foods go with what.
Love it.......2007-05-11
After I decided to start eating vegetarian I noticed I was replacing meat with cheese far too often. This book has helped me embrace vegetarianism and cook great meals, that are easy and tasty. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for great day to day meals that aren't overly complicated.
Excellent Resource for Busy Cooks.......2007-02-28
My well-worn, dog-eared copy of this book still sits in its place of honor atop the microwave whenever I need something quick and simple to prepare. Of course, the recipes are basic (some so much so that they can hardly be construed as recipes at all) but most are perfect for those many nights when you're hungry and out of ideas. It's also a great reference for simple side dishes that are easy substitutions for the same old boring steamed broccoli or boxed rice pilaf.
As much as I love this book, I do think that "gourmet" is a bit of a stretch. My biggest complaint is that several of the recipes are simply recycled into new ones; for example, a recipe for "Black Bean Burritos" calls for 6 flour tortillas and "1 recipe Green Chili Black Beans." This seems a bit unneccessary to me; why not just put a note in the recipe for Green Chili Black Beans that they are also mighty tasty in a tortilla? I also think the "Fundamental Fruits" section is a bit lacking, as all it really contains are a few fruit salad combos, a couple of smoothies, and some uber-basic baked apple and pear recipes.
Despite its flaws, there are several recipes here that have become staples in my house and several others that I refer back to when I want something a bit different. Among my favorites: Sweet Potato Quesadillas; Spinach Rice; Split Pea & Barley Soup; Chickpea Salad with Roasted Peppers; Egg-Dipped Cauliflower; Quinoa, Broccoli and Cheese Casserole; and Spanish Potato Fritatta, among others. Even if you, like me, are an accomplished cook, you can probably find plenty of ideas in here that hadn't occurred to you before. I recommend this to anyone who is pressed for time and tired of takeout.
ITS OKAY.......2007-02-13
This was for my sister but i looked in it. It had some weird stuff in it but its super healthy, which is what my sister wanted...so all is good
kids will eat this stuff.......2007-01-26
I have two teenagers: one vegetarian, one omnivore. I refuse to cook two separate meals, so I need recipes the whole family can enjoy. This cookbook is easy to use. The ingredients are readily available at any mainstream grocery store. I can get home from work and have dinner on the table in 30 minutes. Really.

Book Description
As good for the body as they are for the soul--America's best-known monastery cook captures the essence of culinary and spiritual simplicity in a complete collection of recipes and menus for every meal of the day.
In our hectic, mechanized age, Brother Victor-Antoine's recipes have been welcomed by thousands of tranquillity-seeking readers. His most extensive cookbook to date,
Simplicity from a Monastery Kitchen now brings his unique culinary spirit to every meal and occasion.
As always, he draws on locally grown offerings to create a fresh range of recipes. Complemented by the influence of his French palate, each selection combines elegant flavors with natural ingredients for a satisfying yet nourishing dish. Start the day with Eggs in Potato Croustades or Avignon Banana and Raisin Bread. For lunch, try one of ten hearty soups, or a Polenta and Broccoli Casserole. Dinner could comprise Easy Spinach Croquettes and a Jerusalem Artichoke Salad, or a lavish affair featuring Asparagus Canapes, Grilled Sea Bass with Dill Sauce, and St. Peter's Zabaglione.
Also including a variety of souffles, savory pancakes, crepes, pastas, a special section devoted to mushrooms, and a tempting array of more than two dozen sauces,
Simplicity from a Monastery Kitchen provides a way of cooking that truly celebrates the bounty of the Earth.

A great book.......2002-11-04
It seems ridiculous to try to describe a cookbook as "peaceful" but this cookbook really is. Just reading it almost always fills me with the feeling I get when I am working on a familiar, much-loved recipe for people I care about on a special occasion, which unfortunately is rare. I think that is the magic of this author and this book; the author really seems to approach every meal as a celebration--but a celebration of simple things, as the title says.
This book is mostly vegetarian except for a short but notable chapter on fish. It seems to draw effortlessly from a variety of ethnic sources but all the dishes share the same basic qualities. They really are simple and easy to prepare; there isn't a single one I would describe as fussy. I suppose when you are cooking for an entire monastery you wind up with recipes that also are easy to prepare for 4 or 6!
The directions are simple and clear and the book itself is beautiful. There are interesting illustrations, seemingly woodcarvings not of the food but of mideaval life. There are also quotes on the subject of simplicty, joy, prayer in the margins which are as inspirational as the recipes.
This book will make you hungry for a hundred different kinds of vegetables, a peaceful weekend in the kitchen and a lot else. I recommend it to anyone who takes real joy in cooking.
With a unique and tranquil culinary spirit.......2001-06-08
The delightful recipes comprising Brother Victor-Antoine's Simplicity From A Monastery Kitchen brings a unique and tranquil culinary spirit to today's hectic life style. Uninspired, Geared to novice cook, Not gourmet.......2005-10-02
If you already know how to cook, I wouldn't suggest this cookbook. Here's why:
1) many recipes were bland and uninspired (nothing was bad, but many needed intervention to improve/add flavor)
2) geared towards novice - not for the seasoned cook, and certainly not gourmet
3) recipes call for dried herbs - why not use frozen fresh herbs? Just as fast and WAY better taste. I buy fresh herbs and freeze them in water in ice cube trays, then store the ice cubes in labeled ziplock bags in freezer, and always have fresh herbs available when I need them. Now THAT's fast (and cheap) gourmet.
4) not enough diversity in recipes - many seem like variations of each other
MY TASTES - I've been vegetarian for ~10 years, and I prefer Mediterranean, SE Asian, Indian, English, French, and Soul food. (Read: lots of flavor, not afraid of fats or seasonings) So you should judge my opinion in context.
Excellent, easy recipes.......2005-05-29
This book provides a nice mix of tofu and non-tofu dishes that are easy to make with very few ingredients. The other plus of the book is that easy doesn't mean just combining two canned foods to make a meal, but rather emphasizes fresh (usually healthy) ingredients.
Super-quick food that delivers on Taste!.......2005-05-19
I've cooked over 40 of these recipes and they have all been easy to make and most of all delicious! I've been a vegetarian for 20 years, and one thing I've often hated about many vegetarian cookbooks is that a) the recipes take forever to cook; b) they call for a million ingredients, and often just one Tablespoon of something you'll never use again c) after all that effort, the meal is simply flavorless.
Well, there's GOOD NEWS TONIGHT with "The 15-Minute Gourmet"!
- Fast prep and cooking times
- Short ingredient lists with Things You Have in Your Kitchen Right Now!
- Tasty, Delicious Results that Your Family WILL EAT!
I can say that because while I am a vegetarian, my family does eat at least some meat. This cookbook is making it easier for him to "swallow" vegetarian cooking.
Highly recommended! Good food fast!
Short Lists of Ingredients-Thank you!!.......2004-12-17
Perhaps not in 15 but at 30 minutes max you can dish up some fabulous vegetarian recipes with this book. I have loved every dish that I've tried and she keeps the shopping list at a managable length. I hope she writes a sequel.
I used to dislike cooking, but now..........2003-12-07
I received this book a couple of years ago as a gift and it may be one of the best gifts I've ever received. I cannot recommend it enough. I've cooked nearly every recipe in the entire book and they've all turned out very well.
Maybe the best thing I can say about this book is that I didn't care much for cooking--nor did I know how to cook very well--when I first got this book, but it has really changed my mind. I feel that I learned a lot of key cooking skills from this book, in addition to picking up a few little extra tips that have added a lot to my cooking beyond the recipes in this book. Now I love to cook! These recipes gave me confidence that I could.
The techniques and the ingredients are simple, but the results are always good. The Meatless Mission Chili is something we often serve at parties (my meat-eating friends really like it) and the Pasta with Peanut Szechuan Dressing is a staple in our house.
The helpful hints that accompany each recipe (usually, a little tip about preparing or storing one of the ingredients in the recipe) are great. The nutritional information at the end of each recipe is a big plus, too.

Best vegetable cookbook I've ever seen!.......2001-05-10
I wanted to send this cookbook to all of my sisters and sisters in law for Mother's Day and find here ... This is the best vegetable cookbook I've ever seen, with recipes categorized into groups according to the parts of the world that they come from... eastern Europe, western Europe, Italy, the Middle East, India, the Far East, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Every dish I've made has turned out to be absolutely delicious!
It's not only for the vegetarian, these recipes are great for main and side dishes, buffets, potlucks, and appeal to people with all tastes and backgrounds. I've never made a dish from this book where I haven't been asked for the recipe... A+
this is a great book!.......2000-06-15
This is the best cookbook I have ever used. I never use any other cookbooks anymore! All of the meals are really easy to make, cost effective and totally delicious with a LOT of flavor, which is sometimes unusual for vegitarian meals. I think everyone, even those not vegitarian, should have this book!

Better than gourmet restaurants.......2006-09-04
When I used to eat meat, I dined at many 5 star gourmet restaurants. Many of these recipes belong in that category. The food is delicious. The only downside is that some of the recipes may take a long time to make and for the average 8 to 5er, you won't have time to make them after work. You will also need access to a descent health food store as some of the ingredients such as miso and agar flakes are not going to be in your average grocery store. I still highly recommend this book. Besides the excellent recipes, there is some good nutritional information about cooking and food quality. There is also a good glossary in the back for the less common ingredients describing where they come from and what they are used for. Great book for any vegan.
My Favorite Cookbook.......2005-11-16
I'm vegan and this is my favorite cookbook. The recipes are simple to make, elegant, and delicious - it's perfection. Ron Picarski is a genius. I have sworn to try out every single recipe before I die. I'm about a third of the way there so I know I've still got some great food ahead of me!
Try it out, there's something in it for anyone and everyone.
The Best Cook Book Ever!.......2001-08-02
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for instructions on eating great food that is quick and easy to make. Even if you are not a vegetarian, "Friendly Foods" is the a great gourmet helper. My husband is not a vegetarian and he is crazy about the recipes!
Delicious and Delightful.......2000-07-23
My husband and I (both vegetarians) were lucky enough to be on a cruise in 1998 on which Mr. Pickarski was our chef. I had more delicious food during those six days than I ever had before or since! After we got home I ordered every Pickarski item I could get my hands on, this book included.
Bear in mind, these distinctive, gourmet vegan recipes aren't your everyday fare. This is the book you'll want to pull out when you need to wow your non-vegetarian friends. My favorite is the Chocolate Cream Couscous Cake (page 220). Vegan or not, this is one of the most elegant and delicious desserts you can ever hope to taste. Happy eating!
Perhaps the best gourmet vegan cookbook on the market!.......1999-04-13
Many times I have eaten vegan recipies which are not only bland but unimaginative. When I bought friendly foods over 7 years ago (when I was just turning to a vegetarian lifestyle) I thought I had died and gone to heaven!
The recipies in here are not only nutritionaly well balanced, they are easy on the stomach, delicious and rather easy to make! This book was one of the few that convinced me that eating a non dairy/meat diet would not only be easy, but very satisfying.
Some of the best recipies in this book are the Carob Cake with the Peanut Butter frosting, Tofu Spinach Pie, Hazelnut Glennie and the Carrot Pate.
This book is not only well versed in well tasting vegetarian/vegan recipies, but is chock full of good nutritional advice as well. Although I have not tried all of the recipies in this book, every single one I have tried has been relatively easy to make and the ingredients are relatively easy to get at your local helth food store (and some more enlightened grocery store chains)
