Book Description

Perhaps nowhere is the American obsession with beauty and glorification of youth more prevalent than in gay male culture. Aging, however, is an inescapable fact of life. Negativity and prejudices about this inevitable process can often result in a midlife misspent in self-loathing and despair.

Noted gay psychotherapist Dr. Harold Kooden draws on new research and his vast professional experience to separate facts from fears, as he examines aging and its impact on key areas of gay life: body image and sexuality; physical and spiritual health; work and play; friendships and relationships.

For the first openly gay generation in the U.S. entering a new life stage, this remarkable book offers help, strength, support, and direction-revealing how the skills mastered in a hard-won struggle for survival, recognition, and respect can play an important part in every gay man's empowerment and acceptance of his self in midlife.

4 out of 5 stars Great Passage into Mid-life.......2005-09-06

This is an interesting, provocative, and timely book, and a pleasure to read. It encourages middle-aged gay men to reassess their lives, overcome "the youth fetish, body fascism, and ageism of the gay male world," and to live whole and fruitful lives. While many of the ideas and suggestions are platitudinous pop-psychology, like the ubiquitous solutions of "change of attitude," the author manages to pose many insightful questions that operate even outside his own paradigm of a rebel, anarchist, and activist. Those who fit this paradigm may find even more to gravitate to than I did. Similarly, I'm not sure how most readers will respond to the author's repeated claims of both internalized and externalized homophobic victimization; obviously, queer-bashing continues unabated by the religious right and the likes of Matthew Shepard's murderers, and maybe many of us still retain too many self-censors, some of which are healthy, others not so. If so, Kooden has many ideas to help overcome them. It's a contentious, but central, point, that middle-aged gay men are still fighting to overcome more and more "closets," especially in the fight against ageism.

I agree generally that there is something distinctive and unique about "gay" sensibilities, and we should foster the fulfillment of these distinctive sensibilities. I'd only add "within the bounds of public decency" and "as an individual, not some prototype, determines." He also has the reader do a lot of mental fantasizing and questioning of assumptions, through a kind of internal Socratic dialogue, which I think is a useful re-engineering and self-examination technique. As Socrates demonstrated, life improves with question-asking, not by question-begging. Those who have read my praise for Elliot Cohen's "What Would Aristotle Do?" will find many similar techniques employed here.

The book's eight chapters focus on body-image, hedonism, play/work, relationships, "true self-esteem," creating one's own value system, spirituality, and letting go -- each through the prism of having "come out." Each is stimulating in its own right, and all have something positive to contribute to one's overall self-image as he enters middle age. I found the chapter on spirituality by far the least interesting, only because, for me, at least, there's no "there." But even an atheist can appreciate his comments.

Despite being a pleasure to read, I have three main criticisms: (1) The author suggests a new fantasized model of the ideal gay-male at mid-life instead of the old (no pun intended), asexual, unattractive, lonely, out-of-shape, gay stereotype. I confess, if one must resort to stereotypes, his is infinitely more appealing. But why resort to any stereotype at all? Frankly, I'm tired of monolithic stereotypes of any kind. Besides, isn't it hypocritical to beg for "diversity" on one hand, but insist upon "homogeneity," on the other? (2) Kooden's over-arching theme is that gays should not operate by non-gay rules; instead gays should make their own rules as they go along. But what if everyone universalized this maxim, including militant homophobes? Then what? And while Kooden addresses the pressure to conform, such pressures within the gay community are often greater than those outside it. Beg to differ with gay "orthodoxy," and you'll be called a "Nazi" and have something thrown at you. So much for individuality. (3) Finally, there's no insight from, and in fact several conflicts with, evolutionary psychology, which I found disappointing. For example, EP recognizes "youthfulness" as a biologically-inherited disposition for reproductive or sexual fitness. How does this scientific fact fit his new-gay-middle-aged-man model? It's an issue that people of all sexual orientations must deal with.

The book is extremely well-written with Charles Flowers as co-author. All in all, a very insightful and useful read. It deserves wide readership by all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Mainstrem meets Subculture........2002-07-23

Perhaps the strongest part of this book is it's tie to academic gerontology. Many of the theories of ageing that Kooden uses in this book relate to hetero-geontology. This impressive thing is he takes academic theoritical mish-mash and uses it to a good effect; to help people.

Not only is this book useful for mid-life men, but men in their 60s, 70s, and 80s etc -- but as well should be read by every gay male. Ageing, no matter how much we choose to deny it, effets everyone. Kooden's book looks at ageing in gay culture with an individualist perspective. The individual reading this book can be helped by it - no matter where his position in life.

To learn more about Gerontology, Gay Men or Both, this insightful book helps one to think about and reflect on these issues, and helps them think about themselves

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good........2001-07-10

I think this book is a must read but there are some parts I didn't like. Like the constant suggestion to seek psychiatric or psychological help in getting through certain issues. I'm sure this is helpful to some but to others it would be a waste of money. There's also a lot of emphasis on coming out. I don't think this is something that everybody must do. It really depends on the individual's situtaion. What I liked about the book was the constant affirmation that being gay is ok. You can be yourself. And as you get older that becomes the main focus of your life - being yourself and expressing yourself in whatever way you feel appropriate. Momma and daddy's not standing behind you ready to pounce on you. But overall, it's a good book. Just skim through the touchy-feely stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A Bible For Any Gay Man Entering or Within Middle Age.......2000-12-13

I was astonished at how helpful and powerful this book is. Having completed Rik Isensee's "Are You Ready?" which deals with the same subject, I had laid the groundwork for a more advanced examination of the gay man's reaction and strategies for handling middle age. This book is the perfect "next step." While "Are You Ready?" is a great book that can help start the process of positive thinking regarding middle age, "Golden Men" delves into the subject deeper and enlightens the reader into truly eye-opening new ways of understanding what is actually happening as a gay man enters his 40's and 50's and how to cope with the associated pressures and fears in a remarkably positive way. Divided into sections that examine body, mind and spirit, each chapter looks honestly at the effects of both gay and non-gay culture on the average man's thinking and perception, forces that are both natural and societal in origin, and many other factors that add to the complexity of the middle age transition. With that frank, as-it-really-is honesty, which is also presented with compassion and sensitivity, Koonden & Flowers offer alternative ways of thinking and positive exercises that are designed to bring the reader further away from the fear and depression many men in this age group may face. Some observations are downright profound and I would be surprised if anyone in serious need of a "guide" to handling midlife in a rational manner did not come away from reading this book feeling they had more control over their future. No book can completely dispell anyone's fears or concerns about aging, or change our own internal ageism, but this book is unquestionably a powerful tool in reshaping your outlook. Recently on a NYC subway, a man noticed I was reading this book and, with great interest, asked where he could get it. I felt as though there must be a ton of other men feeling that same middle-age panic and I wish I could steer as many as possible toward this book. It truly is providing an important, even essential, service to any gay male entering or living within middle age (and having a hard time of it). Personally, I am extremely grateful to the authors for writing such a valuable work and feel fortunate I at least have an Amazon.com to help spread the word!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular and Healing!.......2000-07-21

Run, dont walk to get this book. Kooden does a remarkable job sharing his life and professional experience helping gay men recreate a sense of themselves as they age. The focus here is on personal power to overcome negative and limited stereotypes of aging gay men. We need to "name" these. We need to speak out on them. Sensitively written, compassionate, and at the same time challenges the reader to overcome homophobic influences and ageism. I recommend it to all of my gay clients over 35. It is a wonderful book. You WILL change your perceptions! This is how we start!

Jerry Baker is known as America's master gardener--millions of would-be gardeners have warmed to his folksy PBS appearances and made bestsellers out of The Impatient Gardener and The Impatient Gardener's Lawn Book. Like Baker's other books, Flower Power is inexpensive and accordingly short on pretty pictures, but long on good advice, simply presented. For example:
In spring, generously apply wood ashes from your fireplace all around your perennials, several inches deep. This will help to enrich the soil. You can also use dried dog food for the same purpose. It contains many of the same nutrients found in organic fertilizers, such as blood meal and bone meal.
Flower Power gives no-nonsense directions for growing annuals, perennials, bulb plants, roses, and flowering shrubs and trees, with Baker's enthusiasm bursting through on every page.

3 out of 5 stars This book covers almost everything!.......1999-09-30

Although there isn't an index entry for Jerry's various tonics and sprays, they're almost all there. As a Master Gardener, I appreciate his informal style, the ready availability of the products he suggests using, and that he doesn't condescend in his choice of plants - this is more than a beginner's book. I have seen gardens enhanced by his methods, and they work!

Book Description

"All Journeys Are Sacred" Journey with Louise StrongBear into shamanic realms of healing. Meet her teachers as she wanders through middle earth, the lower world, and the upper world, following the path of her heart. Begin in the East, and circle the Medicine Wheel to the North, finding yourself along the way. This is a heroine's journey, correlating with the journey of the fool in the major arcana of the tarot. It is also a story of finding lost soul parts, and finding your way back to your home in the stars. It is about magic, miracles, power animals, angels, witchcraft, shamanism, and shapeshifting. This is Louise's story, the one she knows by heart. And it is your story, too-the one that you forgot. "Remember You Are Magic"

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-04-01

I found this book to be a very moving experience. I enjoyed every page of the journey. I've told all my friends about it. Thank you Ms. Strongbear for sharing with us all.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting & Engaging.......2007-03-16

I found myself traveling along in the enchanted world. Knowing how close you can be to the spirit world in your dreams is a wonderment. I know there are answers in your dreams if you just look and pay attention. Thank you Louise for guiding me through. This is a book everyone should read. Buy two and give one to a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Spellbound.......2007-03-13

Unlike most reviewers, I COULD put Journey by Night down - as when you
are spellbound by a beautiful dream - and you don't want it to end....

My journey through this book took me to a completely new place. I read
and reread lines, passages, poems and chapters. As with anything practiced, it got easier...
to capture a glimpse of what can be possible
on ones own personal journey.

I evolved from an onlooker in that solitary night, to a seeker.

This book and its wisdom will be my bedside companion.

Let us hope there will be many more to come.

5 out of 5 stars I would give this 10 stars if I could!!!!.......2007-03-06

You would have thought Ms. StrongBear wrote books for years. Journey by Night was very inspirational. This is one to remember...come and be a Wayfarer, as Wolf states: "Wayfarer is one who travels by foot, one step at a time. This is a way of learning. Human steps." If you feel lost and alone in the world, travel with StrongBear and meet her animated characters. Once you meet "Jimmy the Leprechaun" and feel his comedic charm, (as he tickles you and himself) but his passionate soul will let you know how similar we are with other living creatures. If you are not satisfied with his cleverness, stroll down the page and take a whimsical retreat into Pegasus world. His world is not filled with long-term suffering and illness; the aura is pleasant--letting you know that the grass is greener on the other side. After reading this book it will answer your question and have you asking questions...you would want to learn more about magic!

I would like to thank you Louise StrongBear for opening up my thinking to a whole new world. I am inspired and I believe you are a healer with the ability to capture your reader. Capturing your reader to make them believe they were there with you while in fear, afraid; but yet, having the courage to find out who you are. Hesitant but eager to connect to helpful strangers; with the question--"Haven't we met before?" Questioning should you give up, but kept your feet planted on the ground as you trotted to your destiny.

Thank you once more for bringing your iridescence as you journey by night. The stars and moon are shining bright for you. Thanks for creating an uplifting story.

Saying it with flowers becomes a creative pleasure when arrangements are as original as they are beautiful. In Flower Power, acclaimed author and flower expert Rebecca Cole explains how to create lush, hip, simple, and elegant arrangements to make any occasion memorable, from a dinner for two to a wedding attended by hundreds. Both exquisite and irreverent, her bouquets combine the classic with the quirky—sumptuous roses with crisp celery stalks, for example, or calla lilies with curly willow branches—and delight in the whimsical.

Rebecca’s step-by-step recipes and tips of the trade make it easy for anyone to re-create her inventive designs at home. She explains how to shop for the best blooms at a supermarket, farmers’ market, or corner deli and how to condition and prepare their stems for maximum longevity. She takes a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a florist and explores the international flower market.

Above all, Rebecca brings new life to the often predictable world of floral arrangements. Her Black Power bouquet combines black irises and black tulips with the brilliant green of euphorbia stems for a stunning effect, while a superb White Christmas bouquet consists of white amaryllis, narcissus, and ranunculus. She offers arrangements to suit a take-out Chinese dinner, a keep-up-the-good-work celebration for an office colleague, and a harvest party outdoors, as well as a Pepto-Bismol-pink get-well bouquet and an uncommon solution for using the most commonplace flowers. Filled with professional advice, helpful information, and nearly 400 gorgeous full-color photographs, Flower Power is an inspiring and refreshing guide to the art of flower arranging, certain to add wit, flair, and beauty to any occasion.

I like the beautiful pictures of the flowers, the recipe-like instructions on how to make the arrangements, and the writings from Rebecca Cole that encourages the reader to be creative, and skip the recipe if you'd like. I borrowed this book from the library to check it out, and I think I'm going to buy it to keep because it's such a beautiful, practical and inspirational flower book.

      5 out of 5 stars Ho-Hum.....Hardly!.......2003-07-05

ANOTHER book on flower arranging? Ho-hum I thought. But wait, the author is Rebecca Cole, the charismatic and incredibly talented floral arranger and author. A relatively tired subject is made crystal clear and amazingly new by Rebecca. The book includes basic flower care advice, excellent instructions and photography, and makes you love flowers almost as much as the author. As with her two previous books, highly recommended for the visual enjoyment as well as the writing, to say nothing of the incredible ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Flower Power Rocks.......2003-02-22

This is the third book I've read by Rebecca Cole and they just keep getting better. Rebecca's new book is filled with cool concepts and writing. She talks about creativity, encourages it, and uses refreshing--sometimes even irreverent--humor throughout the book. Flowers are not too precious for this designer and this reader appreciates all of the tongue in cheek. The flower arrangement results are sometimes whimsical and always stunning. Funny, smart, and beautifully photographed and designed, Rebecca's book is my current favorite gift item.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully creative!.......2002-12-31

I don't know how she does it, but Rebecca Cole delights, amazes and inspires me again! Her third book contains arrangements from the whimsical to sassy and she breaks them down step-by-step, like a big floral arrangement cookbook. I have attempted the Checkerboard Flower Box (about half the size of the one in the book) and it lasted nearly two weeks, thanks to the wonderful conditioning tips. My other favorite section is the Welcoming Windows, about making the all important first impression. Throughout the book, Rebecca Cole shares personal stories from her childhood.

Helen Norman's photographs are breathtaking - sharp and colorful - and there are a LOT of them. This great book helps a lot during long, grey winter days until my own garden begins to bloom again.

The central topic of this work — the seven bodies of man — is one of the most basic of all esoteric teachings, yet only a few books have been published on the subject over the last century. From the works of Flower A. Newhouse, Dr. Stephen Isaac has compiled a comprehensive study on this important topic.

This book is very comprehensive, covering herbal remedies, essential oils, flower essences and homeopathy. The pictures of the flowers are beautiful and interesting to meditate on as one works with a remedy. It's very well written, appealing to both novices and experienced healers. I've learned so much from this book, and I continually turn to it for guidance and information.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about the uses of flowers!.......2000-03-28

This is an amazing book. It talks about herbal uses, the history and how to identify many different flowers. There are beautiful photographs or drawings of each flower. I would definitely recommend this book to any flower lover, and also to people that want to learn more about using common flowers for herbal healing.

5 out of 5 stars Flower Staying Power.......2005-03-29

I loved this book!! I really like cut flowers, but get discouraged when they die after a day or two. I've used some of the techniques cited in the book and my flowers last a lot longer. I've even tried drying one of my arrangements and it looks great. The table "101 of the Best Cut Flowers" is amazing and very useful. It tells you what the vase life for each flower is and how to prepare it. It's just awesome!
