This 25th-anniversary edition of the classic, bestselling cookbook contains 600 heart-healthy recipes, 150 of them brand-new. The book has been updated to reflect the use of nonfat and low-fat ingredients that didn't exist just a few years ago. Recipes include appetizers, snacks, beverages, soups, salads, entrées (seafood, poultry, meat, vegetarian), vegetables, side dishes, sauces, breads, breakfasts, and, of course, desserts. Many are healthier versions of old favorites--such as Eggplant Parmesan, Chicken à la King, Sweet and Sour Pork, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, Devil's Food Cake, and Chocolate Chip Cookies--with some new entries that reflect modern eating trends, like Portobello Mushroom Wrap with Yogurt Curry Sauce, Pad Thai, Curried Quinoa Salad with Cranberries and Almonds, and Artichoke and Chick-Pea Pilaf. Whether you want a quick meal, a nutritious dinner the whole family will enjoy, or a festive entrée to impress guests, this book has an array of choices.
Most recipes reflect AHA guidelines: no more than 30 percent total fat, 8 to 10 percent saturated fat, less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day; plenty of vegetables and grains; and moderate sugar and sodium. Some recipes are higher in fat, but you balance those with lower-fat recipes on other days of the week. Nutritional information includes calories, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), fiber, and sodium. --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
Great Cookbook.......2007-05-28
Lots of great recipes and not a lot of ingredients that you need to make a special trip to the grocery store for.
I'd rather die than use this book.......2007-05-25
I'd rather die of a heart attack than cook from this book! I bought it for my husband because he has high colesterol, but every recipe we tried was lacking in flavor. The Southwestern Ratatouille was bland, and other recipes didn't fare any better. The recipe titles are tantalizing, but fail to deliver flavor.
Great Heart-Healthy and Delicious Recipes!.......2007-05-04
Wonderful cookbook for anyone who is trying to watch their fat, salt and cholesterol intake. Especially liked the crispy baked chicken, only thing I would change would to get breasts that aren't as thick, to maintain cooking time in the recipe. Otherwise, great advice on living healthy, and maintaining a long, heart-healthy life. Recipes are low-fat and absolutely delectible, a combination I haven't seen in quite awhile, and I'm a seasoned cook.
Manage blood pressure.......2007-03-31
A must-have cookbook for healthy eating to manage blood pressure and heart disease - and for everyone else, too.
So far so good.......2007-03-11
Have tried only a few recipes so far, but all meals turned out great. My husband does not like to try new dishes, but when his colesterol and bloodpressure results came back with alarming figures, he agreed to try some heartfriendlier meals. Up to now, I have heard no complaints. Instructions are easy to follow.

Very useful.......2007-06-07
My wife and I like the recipes in this book.
I recommend it
Not the normal quality recipes from AHA.......2007-05-17
I purchased this book because we have cholesterol issues in the family, and so far, I've made 3 or 4 recipes involving beef. They've been very dry and not visually appealing (with kids, this is important!:)) I've found most of the entrees have been time consuming to prepare as well, lots of ingredients. Truthfully, the only thing I'm enjoying from the book is the information in the beginning about cholesterol and how it affects your health- lots of great informative points on this but the recipes are just not very tasty. I also own American Heart Association's Meals in Minutes, which is much better.
Disappointment.......2007-05-14
I have used the first AHA Low-Fat, Low Cholesterol book since its publication. Have not had this issue long enough to try many of the recipes but, frankly, have not seen many that interest me. Having had a chance to look this book over first, I would not have purchased. If you are a first-time user, perhaps you will feel differently.
speedy delivery.......2007-04-03
Book was sent to a 3rd party, who made no comment about it's condition. Presume therefore, good condition. Delivery was excelent. Thanks
Lower your cholesterol.......2007-03-25
A wide variety of recipes that taste good and, best of all, lower your cholesterol levels to where they should be.

Customer Reviews:
Healthy Meals.......2007-01-10
This is a good starter cookbook for those of us blessed with the extra cholesterol gene. The chapters make the health problem easy to understand. The reicpes are easy to make and I was able to use the principles of healthful cooking to modify some of my old favorites. My sweetie even commented that my cooking was improving and that the meals I have made are satisfying! This is a guy who, when left to his own devices, makes everything into a sandwich.
Alot to read.......2005-12-05
I purchased this book about a month ago. Only half way thru it, but everything I have read so far has made me no longer a dummy when it comes to lowering Cholesterol. Healty eating and Happy Holidays. Great gift to get someone you love.
Cooking Can Be Healthful and Easy!.......2005-01-25
I have bought very few cookbooks over the past 40 years, but this one is a must have. The writing style is warm and friendly. I felt like a friend was in my kitchen guiding me into the world of healthful eating. Molly Siple makes nutrition understandable for the lay person and she gives great attention to the asthetic presentation of food. The author has actually made preparing low-cholesterol meals fun rather than labor intensive. It is now my first-choice book for meal planning. We are eating better and enjoying it.
Great Way to Begin the New Year!.......2005-01-15
Many of us make resolutions for the New Year. Some we keep and others are hard to stick to. I did not have a choice about lowering my cholesterol. I just didn't know how to go about it. I found myself in the Dummies section of the bookstore, and reached for Molly Siple's book - Low Cholesterol Cookbook for Dummies. I started skimming through it and the recipes sounded delicious and easy. I purchased the book and am eager to share the news that I have lost 4 lbs in two weeks. Not only are the recipes easy to follow, but the ingredients are all available in my local market. No mystery foods. It is astonishing how quick some of the meals are to prepare, and I just love Molly's little tips on what type dish to serve it in and even how to cut up a mango. I am having my cholesterol levels checked in February and will report my success then.
Chock full of inforrmation and great recipes.......2004-12-13
I'm not much of a cook but I am interested in low cholesterol, so I took a chance on this book. And what a pleasant surprise. Not only is it chock full of information on fats in foods, the good and the bad, but the variety and originality of the recipes actually inspired me to cook.
The chicken recipes alone are simply wonderful.
This author brings impressive and thorough knowledge of cholesterol to her ingenious recipes. It's a well-done and worthy book.

Customer Reviews:
Average.......2007-06-28
There is nothing wrong with the recipes in this book but they are boring. I could (and have) put them together without the expense of this book. If you are new to diabetic cooking, this book may be helpful. However, if you are an old hand, forget it!
Look for a recent publishing date...not this book.......2007-06-20
I bought this book hoping I could eat a little better, since I have "elevated blood sugar levels" but I think most recipes in this book would give me "elevated cholesterol levels" instead. At its publishing date I'm sure it was better than what most people were using to cook with, but we now know that margarine is full of the bad stuff that clogs our arteries, and just about every recipe seemed to have that as an ingredient. So if you're looking for healthy cooking, this isn't the place to start. I suggest finding a book with a publishing date of the last few years, that would have taken into consideration trans fats and our need to eliminate them.
Gives good information for new diabetics.......2007-06-15
I have yet to make anything from the recipe section of this book, so I cannot rate the results. However, the first part of the book gives a great overview for those newly diagnosed with diabetes. Being someone who loves to cook, I also like that the information given has taught me how to adjust my old favorites to fit my new lifestyle. A good purchase thus far.
Not great for me.......2007-04-21
I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes. My nutritionist basically told me to watch my carbs, but dont limit my fat/salt/etc at this time. I bought this along with a Betty Crocker Diabetic Cookbook Everyday Meals Easy as 1-2-3. I am glad I bought the other one. It has pictures and is much easier to navigate. In my case the New Diabetic cookbook spends too much time on diabetes information and isn't as appealing for meals. Great for someone else, just not me!
Disappointed...........2006-11-01
I wanted a diabetic cookbook because my husband and my mother (who lives with us) are trying to eat healthier. I thought following some of the diabetic recipes would be a good healthy, sensible way to eat. I didn't realize that about 1/2 of this entire book is information about diabetes.... the other half is recipes. We don't need all the technical information on diabetes. If you are looking for info on diabetes, then this is definitely the book for you. But if you are looking for healthy diabetic recipes only, this is NOT the book. I wish I had known before I had purchased this book that it is an information first/recipes second book.

Book Description
Dieters everywhere are realizing that weight loss is a simple equation: You have to burn more calories than you take in. Pretty simple, right? You just eat fewer calories. The problem is, most low-calorie cookbooks cut calories by cutting fat, which also means they cut nutrients and flavor! They also fill you up with unhealthy carbohydrates like sugar and white flour. No more! Dana Carpender comes to the rescue with 500 delicious and healthy low-calorie recipes that include healthy fats like olive oil and nuts and healthy carbs like brown rice and whole-wheat bread. It's the best of both worlds, and the healthiest diet imaginable, because every calorie counts in terms of nutrition. There are no empty calories from fillers with no nutritional value. These recipes are delicious and healthy and will help you lose weight for good.
Customer Reviews:
An average guy.......2007-06-16
While there is some useful nutritional information in this book, I think that the book is misleading in several ways and I don't think it was worth the purchase.
It's misleading to title it "every calorie counts" and then tell the reader she in not counting the calories from sugar alcohols used to replace the sugar in many recipes. She claims there is no reliable way to count those calories yet those calories are routinely listed on food labels and the product labels of the sugar alcohol manufacturers.
It's also misleading to say there are 500 recipes in the book when many are but small moderations of one master recipe. Do readers really need 6 variations of the cauliflower "mashed potatoes" recipe or 11 variations of the cauliflower rice recipe? It also annoys me that she only included a few baked goods recipes when her previous books had more of them.
Further, the book claims that these are recipes "the whole family will love"; yet many of the recipes are not just not mainstream. Do kids really love roasted turnips or cumin mushrooms (or the 6 variations on it)?
If you are a low carber or if you have a family to feed and are looking for ways to replace mainstream recipes with healthier alternatives, I think there are better and more creative mainstream books out there, even some of Dana's previous books. I just wanted to post this review because I want others to be aware of what I consider to be shortcomings in this book. I have returned my copy.
Dana is the best!!.......2007-05-27
Every cookbook author should read her books. She has a down to earth, easy to understand style that makes it seem as if she is just your friend or neighbor sharing her recipes with you. I own nearly every book she has written already and plan to buy the rest as soon as my social security check arrives. I have also purchased them all for my daugher and her husband, avid low carbers as well.
Terrific!.......2007-04-11
I have tried many low carb recipes, but Dana Carpender's are the best. There are no really weird ingredients, they are easy to prepare, and so far they all taste great. This is already a favorite on my cook book shelf.
low cal please.......2007-04-10
I was disappointed in this cookbook, I am on a strict fat/calorie regimen per day and it seemed this book was not very diet friendly. There was a lot of information on foods and good tips but not a lot of usable recipes. I recommend the AHA low calorie cookbook or the biggest loser cookbook, both of which have recipes that I use over and over again, both of which I purchased from Amazon, and both of which are "dieter" friendly.
More great recipes....low carb....low cal....just good eating.......2007-01-04
Those who have purchased Dana's previous books, will certainly not be dissappointed with this one...keeps you remembering that a calorie is still a calorie and should be considered when eating healthy.

Book Description
With over 939,000 copies in print, used and recommended by more than 5,500 hospitals, and now completely revised and updated, Don't Eat Your Heart Out Cookbook is the bible for anyone seeking a heart-healthy diet.
Incorporating the latest scientific and nutritional studies, lay expert Joe Piscatella outlines an effective plan for life-long heart health and explains the science behind it in plain-speaking language we all can understand.
Packed with 400 healthy, low-fat recipes-soups, salads, sandwiches, poultry, seafood, and even red meats and desserts-painstakingly developed by Joe's wife Bernie, this indispensable book is a step-by-step guide to achieving a permanent change in dietary patterns. The author provides countless tips on adapting everyday recipes, ordering judiciously in restaurants, decreasing salt and sugar intake, losing weight and keeping it off. The new edition pays special attention to women and heart disease, explains HDL and LDL cholesterol and what the numbers really mean, and discusses coronary regression, the benefits of aspirin, and lifestyle factors vs. genetics. It dispels food myths--that shrimp is a no-no, alcohol is always unhealthy, and ground turkey is better than ground beef--and shows how to make use of low-fat food products.

Customer Reviews:
good food for the heart patient.......2003-10-30
In this cookbook designed for the heart patient, Piscatella devotes the first half to discussion of heart disease, cholesterol, unhealthy elements of American diet, and a seven-step plan to change eating habits - including reductions of fat, salt, sugar and even restaurant eating.
The second half introduces the recipes, accompanied by nutritional information, variations and serving suggestions. Recipes range from Italian vegetable soup to grilled swordfish steak, chicken curry and barbecued lamb roast. There's even a pie crust recipe. With an emphasis on herbs and judicious use of small amounts of fat, recipes are attractive as well as healthy.
You can live with this!.......2001-09-07
I started using this book for my husband. He as a combination of bad genetics and scant will-power. The dishes are very easy to make, most of the ingredients are already in your kitchen, and best of all, they are delicious. It is very easy to follow and you can't believe you are eating so healthy because it tastes so good.
New to Heart Healthy information? This is your book!.......2001-03-19
After my father had an emergency triple-by-pass, our entire family experienced a "wake-up call" and finally decided to start learning about our hearts and how to eat for better heart health. One by one, each of us has bought a copy of this book--it is SO well written and Mr. Piscatella explains everything so well that it makes you excited about eating healthier. He is also very realistic about what it takes to change habits you've developed over many years. The first half of the book is all of the background information you need and the second half is the cookbook portion. The recipes are a helpful way to get started in your new appraoch to cooking and eating! I just bought this book for my husband and me, and I can't put it down. The information in the first half of the book is priceless. It goes in-depth about not only the workings of the heart and the causes of coronary heart disease, but also contains a step-by-step guide for how to change your lifestyle to prevent, control, or even reverse heart disease. The recipes in the second half are delicious and practical, if somewhat pricey. The author's focus is on presenting a practical, "do-able" approach to health, and he certainly achieves that. If you aren't buying it for yourself, buy it for your kids... their future dietary habits are determined by how they eat today. And "traces of the disease are common in American children by age 10" (p. 25). I'm buying another one for a friend.
A Good Book for the Common Man (or Woman)!.......2000-03-25
Having just been told I am a CAD patient, and undergoing the angioplasty/stent process, I had a special reason for picking up this book. What a source of useful information! I was amazed. Yeah, we all know "lots" about proper diet and exercise, don't we? Well, this author covers it in much greater depth. Heck, the wonderful recipies are almost a bonus! Even if your are completely convinced that you have no cardiac problems at all; have no risk factors; and are a diet guru - get this book! It is the best thing you could do for yourself. . . and your loved ones! Bon Apetite!

Low-fat with flavor.......2001-11-24
I reach for this cookbook over and over again, and I've yet to be disappointed by one of the recipes. The comments are helpful, the recipes easy to follow, and the results are always tasty. I read one reviewers' complaints about the pealla recipe, but I've made this dish several times for dinner parties, and I and my guests have always been pleased. The book offers a wonderful way to enjoy low-fat cooking without sacrificing flavor. It truly has become the bedrock of my low-fat cooking library.
Good if you know what you're doing?.......2000-12-09
A comment on my earlier review: I was going to use the author's recipe for paella until I read it more carefully and then I found that most of it went against the grain so I didn't. I understand that recipes for paella abound and that hers may be to other people's taste but it wasn't to mine. In the name of fat reduction she suggests that if the reader cannot get Spanish chorizo, but only Mexican chorizo, the reader use "light smoked sausage" (p. 154) because Mexican chorizo is "swimming in fat" (p. 144). While it is true that chorizo is quite high in fat, there is only so much of it in any particular serving and it is absolutely indispensable. Paella would just not be paella without it! Furthermore, she uses 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves and 1/2 pound boneless pork loin chops for 8 servings, in addition to 1/2 pound large shrimp. 8 fresh clams, 8 fresh mussles (understand that this is 1/4 chicken breast half, 1 oz. of shrimp, 1 mussel and 1 clam per serving and 1 oz. pork chops), and artichoke hearts, etc. (p. 144-145), and she says to cut the chicken and the pork into CUBES! While this may be fine for some, I could not do it this way. I omitted the pork entirely, and used what I prefer: bone-in chicken thighs with skin (I would use 1 per serving)), and I left them whole. Also, I omitted the artichoke hearts which I didn't think would work well enough, and I used more saffron than she says is necessary and no matter what recipe you use, I suggest that you use saffron to taste. Also, I would not (although one could) cook the chorizo in the stockpot with the rice-I panfry it. If the way I make it increases the fat content to some extent over the way she does it (her recipe has 7 grams of Total Fat and 2 grams of Saturated Fat per serving-but at 5' 3 1/2 inches tall, I know from the website of Dr. C. Everett Koop that I can have 50 grams of fat per day, so I don't know what the fuss is about), I think that that is vastly preferable, especially since one does not have paella every day. I am wondering what to do about the other recipes in the book about which I know nothing...
Terrific cookbook with healthful recipes!.......2000-11-29
This cookbook is divided into sections each with recipes from soups to salads, entrees and desserts from a different international cuisine (French, German, Hispanic, Italian, Middle Eastern, etc.) complete with nutritional analysis for each recipe so that the reader can see just how many calories, protein, carbohydrates. cholesterol, sodium and total fat (broken down into saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsatured) all expressed in grams or milligrams per serving, except calories, and use his calculator to compute the total number of calories and/or fat grams per meal, if he needs to. There are mouthwatering color photographs of some of the recipes grouped together in two different parts the book. Last recipe I tried was for the Turkey Rolls with Prosciutto and Cheese (Italian). Because it is quite high in calories (408 per serving) I omitted some of the ingredients (flour, bread crumbs, egg substitute and bread crumbs). I liked it (although I didn't know what I was missing because I'd never had it/made it before) The author is good enough to say that it is traditonally made with chicken breasts so if you want to make it with them, you can do that too. Next on my list that looks beautiful-Chicken with Forty Colves of Garlic (French) and their Paella (Hispanic). Also Chicken Piccata (Italian),Aegean baked Fish (Greek) and Couscous with Lamb Stew (Middle Eastern). Highly recommended. Wouldn't want to be without it.

The Type 2 Diabetes Cookbook: Simple & Delicious Low-Sugar, Low-Fat, & Low-Cholesterol Recipes.......2005-10-16
Very good book with lots of wonderful recipes that anyone would enjoy. Healthy food prepared simply and delicious.
The Type II Diabetes Cookbook: Simple and Delicious Low-Sug.......2001-10-16
This is a wonderful book. It has useful information about diabetes, including the effects of stress. It contains many useful charts. One of the best features of this book are popular recipies that have been adapted for a diabetic diet. You don't have to sacrifice enjoyment in order to eat well.
It does contain ingredients that myth declares taboo. This book will show you how to use foods in a healthy way. If you are using books that were written 10 years ago, I would replace them with this and similar books. This book is up-to-date with medical findings.
Simple Recipes.......2000-06-11
This book contained many simple and quick recipes for this special diet needs of a diebetic. Substitutes were listed, however, some sugar is used in a few recipes.

Customer Reviews:
Great start to healthy.......2007-03-10
My husband was recently told he has high cholesterol. His doctor told him to make life changes if he wanted to see 50. We have tried several recipes and have liked all of them. They use simple ingrediants. If you have to add something to your cabinet, more than likely you will use it in more than one of the recipes.
improving my diet.......2006-11-10
As a diabetic with a number of health issues, I found this cookbook to be most helpful in my fight to maintain good health. They are varied and simple to make.
Lose weight, lower cholesterol.......2006-11-08
This is a very informative book. As soon as my Dr. told me my cholesterol was too high, I bought it. After 2 months of reading how to change my eating habits and using the recipes, I was able to lower my cholesterol by 55 points! It would have received 5 stars if there were some pictures (there are none).
Delicious and recipes have great nutritional stats.......2006-08-30
Every recipe I have made from this book has been delicious! I was surprised! And the recipes use common ingredients. Recipes are easy to assemble and the directions make sense. If only it had pictures! I think the revised editions have more pics. Great cookbook and I definitely recommend it for anyone concerned about improving their health.
Good recipes, annoying format.......2005-08-08
I'm not sure if there are different versions of this cookbook, but the one I bought is the size of a paperback novel. That makes it quite hard to use in the kitchen, because the pages and print are very small, and the book won't stay open on the counter unless you break the spine.
However, the recipes I've tried have been pretty good. Just look around to see if it comes in hardcover or another, easier, format.

Customer Reviews:
I can't believe this book will help anyone.......2007-01-05
I was very interested in this book due to my recent diagnosis of pre-diabetes. I've been advised to steer clear of simple sugars, esp. white sugar, white flour, rice and potatoes. I thought this book would be a great addition to my cookbook library, but alas it was not. Unfortunately the authors simply omit white sugar from the recipes, but still include huge amounts of simple sugars through white flour and fruit juice concentrates. If you are specifically allergic to white sugar, then this book might be for you. If, however, you're a diabetic trying to cut out simple sugars I'd pass on this book.
Disappointing if you want it for the COOKIE recipes.......2005-02-21
After reading the positive reviews, I bought this book. The introduction said "a few" recipes contain date sugar. When I went to the section on cookies, I found that all but three of the cookies recipes contain date sugar...usually 1 to 1.5 cups!
There are many other books that focus on fruit-sweetened baking...if cookies are your interest, I'd recommend looking at others first.
So far, this book has been great!!.......2001-11-25
I've tried three of the recipes so far. All have been received with much enthusiasm by my daughter, who must limit her intake of refined sugar. The ones I've really enjoyed so far have been the Apple pie and the Brownies. My daughter enjoyed the brownies so much that she wanted them made as a bithday cake. If the rest of the recipes in the book are this good, I would highly recommend this book.
The I can"t believe this has no sugar".......2001-08-07
I did not like this book too much because the sugar substitute that she uses sometimes, like rice syrup is very difficult to find. I do not recomend this book.
ingredients difficult to find.......2001-05-02
I like that the recipes are sugar-free and also avoid artificail sweeteners. The muffins I made were great, but I can't find Minute Maid pineapple juice concentrate or unsweetened grape juice concentrate. These are ingredients in many of the recipes.
