Customer Reviews:
Great Party Item.......2007-01-11
I loved this book because the recipes are simple, yet it offers some new twists.
Great recipes and great design.......2006-04-11
We've purchased a number of martini and other drink recipe books before coming across this one. One of the best things about this book is its spiral design. It lays flat, which means you don't have to try to hold it open or prop it up while mixing up a drink. Can't tell you how frustrating it is trying to whip up a martini or other stylish drink while trying to hold a book open! This book has great recipes, both old and new, is organized by type of liquor and even gives you ideas for the best glass to serve your masterpieces in. I just purchased another copy to give as a wedding/shower gift for a young couple.
They even got the Singapore Sling right!.......2006-01-16
This bartender guide is both colorful and full of photos. It's not also reasonable organized but has color codes for the different types of drinks (Gin, Vodka, etc.) to make it easy to navigate the cocktails. Also, I was happy to see a bartender guide that has the CORRECT Singapore Sling ingredients listed. So many others don't even have the real one used by the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. One thing that makes sense about this book, is that its spiral bound a real plus!
Thoroughly informative guide for the first-timer or the enthusiast.......2005-09-20
I found a used copy of this book at a local bookstore, and bought it out of sheer curiosity. I knew nothing prior to mixing drinks or even how to use a shaker, and was thoroughly amused at how drinking enthusiasts around the world could come up with 780 unique -- and sometimes downright perverse and ridiculous -- names for the world's finest cocktails.
There are two things that I love about this book -- it's brilliantly arranged as a reference guide, and it's geared for both the entry-level hobbyist and the more experienced enthusiast in mind.
Unlike many other bartender guides that are tiny paperbacks or printed on thicker paper that is harder to flip-through, Salvatore Calabrese's book is built like a true index in mind: it's a hard-cover with spiral-bound pages inside printed on glossy color paper. The 780 drinks are divided into logical categories (brandy, rum, wine, vodka, shooters, punches, nonalcoholic, etc.) and each drink's mixing instructions are designed to be read in less than 30 seconds. As a quick reference, I have not seen a book that is better written with clarity and brevity in mind.
Any book I'm willing to pay for as an introduction into a hobby needs to me interested with the history, the basics on how-tos, and the fine science of becoming an enthusiast. The book's opening chapters cover everything from tools & equipment, glassware, and bar terminology to flavors & garnishes, proper techniques for juicing limes, and how to properly use ice!
Nearly every single recipe includes a brief history as to where the naming scheme caming from, and there's some description to the regional origins of certain spirits and bases as well.
I'm not planning on becoming a professional bartender, but if I were going to, I'd imagine this text would easily be one of the required reads and "keeper" books for someone truly interested in pursuing a long-term education into the fine art of drink mixing.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic for Making Choices.......2004-09-24
I bought the book to help me choose how to make the best of my limited time visiting Speyside. How do you choose between visiting Macallan, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Glen Grant, Aberlour, etc.? Well this book breaks down each experience in detail giving descriptions on everything from the tour format, to the friendliness and helpfulness of staff, to tasting notes for the included samples. Even the cleanliness of the washrooms and the breadth of items available in the gift shop are covered. Where can you bottle and label your own bottle for a one-of-a-kind souvenir? What's the prettiest distillery? Is the tour better directed to the novice or the connoisseur? How much does it cost? What makes the distillery unique? Where is the malting, bottling, coopering done? Where does the water come from? What parts of the process are we allowed to see on the tour? All is covered. My only complaint is the apparant absence of a recommended amount of time to allocate for a visit to each distillery. A couple of hours seemed like plenty for most, but some are much quicker and some make you want to stay and enjoy the grounds (or the tasting room) for hours...

Customer Reviews:
A gem of a book.......2004-08-31
I've read this book from cover to cover and find the majority of drinks to my liking. So far I've tried eight recipes -- all winners. My friends liked them too. I particularly like the Christmas Cosmo, Candy Cane Martini, White Christmas, and Grinch (an odd sort of drink in color and flavor but very amusing if you like Midori and want an excuse to eat maraschino cherries).
The non-alcoholic hot drinks are very comforting, especially on cold winter evenings.
I'm a sucker for beautiful photos in recipe books and this book doesn't disappoint, but I wondered if my efforts would look as beautiful as the photos. Answer: they did. I'm looking forward to working my way through the rest of the recipes that caught my eye and taste buds.
Loved this book.......2004-03-12
I loved this book. Great photos, great recipes, and best of all... great drinks. It includes plenty of classics... and some variations that taste and look beautiful. In fact, I was just buying a few more copies for friends... and read the other reviews from our friends in Canada and couldn't believe what I was reading. Maybe they don't know how to follow a drink recipe... or should just drink whiskey straight. Anyway, I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fun drink book to have as part of their cookbook collection. Cheers!
only for the photos.......2003-12-14
Indeed, truly awful recipes. Although each seems a clever concoction and is assigned a truly lovely and inspiring photo, the actual results are at best comparable to mouth wash. Unless you are interrogating a possible serial killer for location of body parts, I can't think of one good reason you would actually serve these drinks to human beings, or in fact anything in the primate family. Avoid. Talk to an actual bar tender for your drink recipes.
The necronomicon of cocktail books........2003-12-14
I had this great plan. I would host a Christmas cocktail party, brimming with fabulously festive beverages. Friends would marvel at what a clever hostess I was, and I would be a shining star. If only I hadn't relied on this book to be my silent sidekick.
Every drink from within it's pages sucked. The Christmas Kiss was dull and without flavour. The White Christmas smelled of floor cleaner, and another whose name has been forgotten tasted of it. Page after page of damning drinks, not a single one worthy of repetition.
This book is dreadful, and every single one of the author's books should be avoided like the plague. In the end I tossed the entire book into the recycling bin, disgusted with the money I had wasted, and grateful I hadnt waited till the night of my cocktail party to discover what garbage these recipes were.
