Book Description

Mangia-minus the meat and dairy-with these classic Italian dishes from the author of The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen.

In the sumptuous style of classic Italian cuisine, this collection of delectably authentic recipes reinvents vegan. Mouth-watering dishes burst with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil-all within an animal-free diet, ideal for lactose-intolerant eaters and vegetarians, too.

Delicious Italian food was made for bountiful and flavor-filled variations, not weak substitutions-which is why none of these recipes calls for tofu, soy milk, or other ingredients that mimic meat, dairy, and eggs. Now readers can treat themselves to something scrumptious-even if they can't make it to Italy this year.

4 out of 5 stars Tired of wimpy frozen lasagna, limp spaghetti, and uninspired Italian?.......2007-06-15

Do you love Italian food, but are tired of greasy, unhealthy versions in restaurants? Looking to lighten up on fat and cholesterol? A vegan or vegetarian looking for authentic Italian without strange soy meat substitutes?

Enter Donna Klein's Vegan Italiano. Author of TheThe Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen, The PDQ (Pretty Darn Quick) Vegetarian Cookbook: 240 Healthy and Easy No-Prep Recipes for Busy Cooks, and the The Gluten-Free Vegetarian Kitchen: Delicious and Nutritious Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Dishes, Klein writes easy-to-follow, delicious vegan recipes that, best of all, are free of strange soy substitutes like TVP crumbles, soy sausage, tofu or tempeh. Only garden-fresh natural ingredients are used, with a touch of olive oil for flavor.

Naturally, Italian standards such as bruschetta, minestrone, gnocchi, and lasagna are included. Bruschettas include Asparagus, Apulian-Style with Cherry Tomatoes and Basil, and Cherry Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper. Lasagnas include Spinach and Eggplant and Zucchini. The main part of the book is dedicated, not surprisingly, to pasta, with numerous farfalle, linguine, and fusili offerings. There are also numerous ideas for fresh wild greens salads, vegetable side dishes, pizzas and breads, and desserts. Many of the dessert offerings would be perfect on a hot summer's day on the patio: fruits poached in red and white wine, macedonias, and granitas.

The great thing about vegan Italian recipes is that they're delicious as written, but if you want to add cheese, feel free. It's much easier to add animal products to a successful vegan recipe than it is to subtract them from a traditional one.

The majority of recipes are easy to prepare and contain detailed nutritional info. Fans of Donna Klein's other vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, as well as those looking for healthier updates on authentic Italian cuisine, will do well to check out Vegan Italiano. Although not as thorough as Klein's Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen (much of Vegan Italiano felt like carryovers from MVK), these are still healthy, delicious Italian favorites that are easy to prepare.

5 out of 5 stars A great cookbook, vegan or not.......2007-06-10

This book uses vegetables, grains, and beans in ways that will delight anyone interested in improving his/her diet.

5 out of 5 stars Vegan Italiano.......2007-03-23

Simple, authentic, and delicious recipes - who could ask for more? A truly special vegan cookbook - it has certainly become my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious, Authentic and no weird ingredients.......2006-11-09

I pre-ordered this book before it came out because I loved the author's previous book, The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen. When it arrived I started using it immediately and have not been disappointed. I hope she goes on to write a Vegan Francaise cookbook and many more.

The recipes are relatively simple and straightforward. I am thrilled that they avoid vegan ingredients that are not indigenous to the region - there are no calls for tofu, fake meat or tempeh, etc.

Where an Italian recipe traditionally calls for cheese or eggs, the author finds a vegan version or invents one, staying within the norms of the cuisine. Most recipes are less than a page. There are no pictures. Every recipe I have tried has been delicious and even my husband (who thinks all Italian food should be smothered in cheese) has liked these dishes.

Anyone who like Italian food will appreciate this book.

Book Description

Venturesome Vegetarian Cooking (Surrey Books, $21.95) busts the veggie mold, focusing on flavor and innovative recipes, rather than on philosophy and persuading tofu to taste like tenderloin. These are great recipes that just happen to be vegetarian.

This mother-son team offers more than 150 vegan recipes (and more than 100 color photographs) that are simple enough to pull together during the week, yet daring and delicious enough for dinner parties. This is vegetarian cooking for people who love to eat.

The book includes a world of meat- and dairy-free meals drawn from the authors' culinary explorations - spanakopita from Greece, crostini and pasta from Italy, pad Thai and aromatic soups from Thailand, sushi and earthy noodle dishes from Japan, and plenty of comforting favorites from home - creamy mashed potatoes, fluffy biscuits, rich gravy and thick corn chowder.

Packed with advice for keeping cooking easy, efficient and always an adventure, Venturesome Vegetarian Cooking draws on J.M. and Michelle's deep knowledge of vegetarian cooking and their pleasure in breaking the rules. They turn a simple Italian bread and tomato soup into something extraordinary with Southeast Asian spices, and give hummus a makeover with hot peppers and cashew butter.

John Mackey, founder of Whole Foods Market, offers an informative forward.

This book rocks! Some of the most delicious, healthy and fun vege recipes I have tried in a while. Mostly pretty easy, but a few challenges make it fun as well. Check it out, I bought an extra to give to some lucky friend.

4 out of 5 stars Venturesome Vegetarian Cooking: Bold Flavors for Meat & Dairy Free Meals.......2007-01-05

I found the book to be very good but as I have not tried all of the recipes yet I can not give a OK to all recipes. But what I have tried were very god.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I Ventured.......2006-06-24

This book is great for those who want to get some variety and experiment with new flavors. The Asian-inspired dishes, the breaded eggplant with sweet tomato sauce, all really wowed me and made me want to try more. There are photos, which is nice, too, so you can check out what some of the recipes will look like in their finished form.

5 out of 5 stars Great Vegan Cook Book.......2006-02-26

I have many vegan cook books, but this is one of the top 5 books I always cook with, doesn't take alot of ingredients, the pictures are beautiful. However to make it an even better book it would have been nice to have had some better desserts.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2005-06-03

I have tried many recipes and loved them all! My favorites are Italian Spinach, Baked Sweet Potato Wedges and Frozen Fudge Pops. I am not a vegetarian or lactose-intolerant. I was looking for some interesting meals and side dishes to feed my family of four and this hit the spot. My two-year-old daughter shovels veggies in her mouth like they are candy!!!
The book is very attractive with colorful highlights of the time necessary for each recipe and other helpful hints!!! I'll be cooking from this book forever!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential and Fun Tool for Vegetarians.......2004-03-31

When I decided to branch out from Betty Crocker and more basic cookbooks, Linda McCartney's WORLD OF VEGETARIAN COOKING was the first cookbook I bought. I honestly feel that it has heightened my appreciation for food and my disdain for vegetarian cookbooks that lack in imagination. Simply put, American cooking leaves little room for those who can't or won't eat beef, pork, poultry, and even seafood; therefore, American vegetarian cookbooks tend to offer the same fritattas, quiches, and portabellos. Linda McCartney, during her travels around the world with Wings, put together a fantastic collection of what the world can offer vegetarians. So throw out the bland books, veggies, and get excited.

Recipes to try first: One-Pot Mushroom Risotto, Milanese Risotto, Fontina and Tomato Pie (I made this in bulk for a big party once and never got to eat any of it, it was gone so fast, but I hear it was scrumptious), Coconut Rice Pudding (another party favorite), Sweet and Sour Tofu, Pasta Genovese (the main dish for my very first dinner party), Rhubarb Fool, Avocado Hummus (possibly the best taste I have ever come across), Honey Pudding, and Vegetable Kichdi.

This book is fantastic for: Entertaining, cooks ready to move out of the Beginner category, cooking for one or two people, special or every day dinners.

This book's weak spots are: Desserts - the Mississippi Mud Pie and the Lemon Sponge Cake did not turn out well. For the cake, I traced it back to omissions and errors within the recipe itself. Also, the desserts are a little less creative than the rest of the book.

This book's suprisingly useful spots are: Sauces and Sundries. I cannot emphasize enough - the Avocado Hummus is amazing.

I have given this book to so many grateful vegetarians, that "Leave it to Linda" has become our motto.

5 out of 5 stars Unique Recipes for the Time Challenged.......2001-05-16

When Linda McCartney's newest cookbook, World of Vegetarian Cooking, arrived in the mail at my house, I opened the package and took a deep breath. I have bookshelves lined with many really great vegetarian and vegan cookbooks, all with beautiful photos to go along with the recipes, and wonderful ideas for meal planning. But these cookbooks get taken off of the shelf only when it is time to dust, for two main reasons. The first is that most of the recipes have ingredients that I have either never heard of or I can't find in my local grocery store or even health food market. The second reason is that many of the recipes take a long time to prepare. I always think, while perusing these cookbooks in the bookstore, that I will just make the time somehow so that my family will enjoy these vegetarian delicacies. It never happens. As a busy mom, there are times in my day when I have to pause and think, "Have I eaten today?" I need quick recipes with readily available ingredients. Linda McCartney's book is chock full of both. The introduction presents vegetarianism in a way I had never considered before. Linda writes that it is anticipated that at the present rate, if people continue to convert from meat-eaters to vegetarians, by 2050 we will all be vegetarians. Also a lifetime of vegetarian eating, which I hope my son will have, results in saving 760 chickens, 5 cows, 20 pigs, 29 sheep, 46 turkeys, 7 rabbits, and over half a ton of fish. The cookbook has a whole section on nutrition, food groups, and topics such as the vegetarian pantry and alternatives to dairy products. Each recipe comes with a preparation time, so I can plan ahead and decide if I have the amount of time to make a particular entree. There is also a section of the book entitled, "Quick and Easy Meals," which is, of course, the part of the cookbook that I turned to right away! The photos of these recipes looked just as pleasing as the ones in the other sections of the book, but the preparation times for these meals were more reasonable, given my time constraints. Each recipe throughout the book also indicates which country it came from and some even have notes from Linda telling the circumstances around which she first tried the recipe. Sometimes her daughters introduced her to them, other times she ate them at friend's homes. The book ends with menu planners for such celebrations as children's parties, Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving, as well as a midsummer eve's picnic. My family is particularly fond of the festive loaf that is a sort of vegetarian meat loaf made out of veggie burgers. I have served it to non-vegetarians who liked it so much that they requested the recipe! My husband and son prefer the loaf cold and eat it for leftovers in a sandwich. The baked portobello mushrooms were a great main course served with a side of rice and steamed veggies. I love portobellos but cook them the same way every time. The recipe in Linda McCartney's cookbook was quite different from the way I typically make them; the flavors were unique. Linda also has lots of great creative salad dishes that go beyond the mixed green or mesclun type. My family likes her warm zucchini salad, which is simple to make. I nearly always have the ingredients for this dish in my house. Great finger food recipes for kids include crispy vegetable won tons, oven fries, and unique ideas for homemade pizza. There is a dessert section in the cookbook as well. Linda McCartney has left behind quite a legacy. Making her favorite foods made me feel like I was being invited into an intimate part of her life, enjoying meals that she once shared with family and friends. Linda has left all of us with a wonderful opportunity to enjoy vegetarian food from around the world. She does it in a way that requires limited effort and time. Although she is gone, her music, her animal activism, and her way of living remain with us in different forms even today. Through her recipes, the work she did in promoting the merits of a vegetarian diet continue to inspire even those of us who feel at times challenged in a culinary sense! -Reviewed by Carol Laliberte

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and intriguing.......2007-05-09

An obvious connection overlooked before Carol Adams came along to illuminate it for us.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for women who don't want to be treated like meat.......2005-03-23

Many feminists do not like to be treated like meat or like animals. I think this is because we all know, consciously or not, the extent and nature of animal oppression. Why have feminists for so long co-opted these animal metaphors to explain their own oppression, yet failed to see that these metaphors only work BECAUSE animals themselves are so oppressed?

Carol Adams is among the first to step forward and call for feminist attention to animal rights and meat eating. She makes points in this book which are revolutionary and, I believe, will be the future of feminism. The questions she raises about species are no less reasonable than questions other feminists have raised about race, class, gender, and any other facet of identity. Yet most feminists have refused to analyze human identity, and look at animals with the same eyes that many men look at women.

Though at times Adams writes very academically and heavily, this book should be required reading for all feminists-- and for all people who believe that both women and animals in this culture are literally and figuratively fragmented, consumed, and turned into meat, the ultimate objectification. A book whose importance I cannot stress enough.

5 out of 5 stars The Sexual Politics of Meat: ; An Ecofeminist classic.......2004-11-28

I first read THE SEXUAL POLITICS OF MEAT in 1990. I had just become a vegetarian. This book connected my feminist politics with my vegetarian politics. This book was a groundbreaking work in ecofeminist theory. Ms. Adams shows how a patriarchal society oppresses animals, women and the very planet Earth itself. She shows us how our dietary choices can be a resistance to the oppressive patriarchal status quo. This book continues to empower me. In 2004 this book is more relevant than ever.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Crucial.......2004-01-04

I could go on & on about this book. It is one the most inspiring and thought-provoking books I've ever read. I first read this book around the time I became a Vegan, developed a serious interest in Sociology, and earned a greater respect for Feminism. To truly appreciate and understand this book, one has to read it with an open mind. Some of the concepts and theories may seem extreme or abstract at first, but I suggest that people give Adams's text time to marinate.

5 out of 5 stars Adams Gives Gives Voice to Historical Vegetarian Authors.......2003-01-24

Too long has vegetarian history been wrongfully called modern or faddish; Adams addresses this and explains how the messages of vegetarian authors have been muted, leading to these misconceptions. This book is a great help in giving historical examples of vegetarian authors (though mostly modern female writers) as well as how the writers assembled the messages in the texts. The first part of this book focuses on definitions and historical overviews of the treatment of animals and women. The second part gets to the literary examples, author techniques, and audience trivialization and/or dismissal of vegetarian messages. Now, when I read or hear someone discussing vegetarian authors such as Wells, Plato, Shelley, Shaw, etc., I will always have a historical and psychological awareness of how both their contemporaries and mine never had or will never have the entire messages acknowledged. I would especially recommend this book to any vegetarian and encourage him/her to read as many books by historical vegetarians as possble.

5 out of 5 stars Groovy as all get out!!.......2006-01-13

As an avid reader of "scads" of books related to vegetarianism/veganism - and as a vegetarian of nine years, vegan of one - I've got to say this is by far THE MOST ENTERTAINING BOOK I've read on this topic! I've gasped, winced and even cried reading non-fiction portraying the ghasly side of human behavior and how we treat animals, but I've never laughed out loud - until now! (My cats think these seemingly unprovoked outbursts indicate that I've finally gone insane.) Definitely not just for the flesh-eater, as the title may lead one to conclude, this book is jam-packed with facts and the author's insightful observations. Reinhardt, perhaps the only ethical attorney in existence, asks you to question your behaviors, consider the alternatives and make the kindest, most logical alterations in your lifestyle for your physical health, your conscience, the planet and of course, the animals. Don't pass this one up - buy it used, contact the author, track down an unsuspecting vegan in the tofu department and beg to borrow it! I love this book and am buying copies for all of my redneck, backwoods relatives who still can't pronounce "what it is exactly that I am." (Veee-gun, Aunt Edna.) This one is fun and informative - get a copy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Funny and enjoyable to read while full of truths.......2005-02-22

This is a fantastic book. After a difficult holiday with relatives I picked up this book and wished I had had it with me before the holiday had started. Since then I bought 8 more copies and have given them to friends and relatives alike. Information on the benefits of being vegetarian is presented in a non-emotional way with excellent facts to support the information. It covers issues ranging from nutrition to environment to factory farms. There are scenarios for dating, a whole chapter on dealing with relatives, and tips on how to be vegetarian during the holidays without going hungry. There's no meat-eater bashing in here. In fact, a lot of the writing is pretty funny. Its just a very straightforward presentation of information and armed with non-emotional information makes it so much easier to have a conversation with people who try to challenge your choices. I highly recommend this for anyone who is vegetarian/vegan as well as for anyone who loves/knows someone who has made such a choice and you want to understand why. Its absolutely one of the best books I've read and has helped me immensely. Plus there are some really funny parts. Enjoyable and quick to read

    4 out of 5 stars Sound advice.....read on.......2000-12-31

I found this book to be very helpful and fun to read but,I haven't picked it up again since my first read through. I think this would be a great gift to a new vegatarian or a lender to a person interested in learning more about the specifics. Informative and fun....just not a whole lot of new info for this long-time reader and veggie eater!

This book is an outstanding review of the health, ecological, and moral reasons for refraining from eating animal products. Having said that, it is neither "preachy" nor sanctimonious but rather downright entertaining. I loved it. It made a vegetarian out ofme.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2000-01-27

I bought this book for my boyfriend right after we discussed going vegetarian. I thought it was a cookbook to help ease us into a meatless diet, which we were considering primarily because he wanted to lose weight. Instead, it changed my boyfriend's life -- addicted, he kept coming into the room to read me sections. It gave us permission to be vegetarians (year and a half now) for ALL the right reasons -- love of animals, the environmental and hunger problems perpetrated by the meat industry, all-around health, etc. -- although he did lose 30 pounds without getting hungry! This is a perfect antidote for all the stupid Adkins/Zone/high-protein diets that are so unhealthy -- and are only excuses for people to keep eating too much meat (which is *any*, now that we've read this book). And it's so funny and light-hearted that you'll be an avowed vegetarian before you know what hit you. Give a copy to everyone you know! We're sold.

4 out of 5 stars Good recipes; but be careful about a TVP allergy.......2002-05-31

When I tried following a vegan diet in the summer of 2000 I made extensive use of TVP (texturized vegetable protein). I found TVP to be ideal for making imitation meat products, and this cookbook was an excellent resource for finding ways to use TVP. And some of the TVP foods I found to be better tasting than their meat counter-parts!

Probably the best tasting recipe I made from this book was the "Herbed Loaf." Also excellent was the recipe for "Sloppy Joes." And I made up a large bath of the "Veggie Burgers" and froze most of them for quick sandwiches later.

However, after a few months I found that I wasn't "thriving" on the vegan diet. And one reason I didn't was I would later learn that I was allergic to TVP! Since I was eating TVP almost every day, this had significant health implications.

But it should be noted that I am not allergic to soy in general. And I have since found out that many people have a problem with TVP who don't have a problem with soy otherwise. So there is "something" about the processing method that turns soybeans into soy flour and then into TVP that makes it even more of a potential allergen.

As a result of this problem, I eventually stopped the vegan diet and went back to eating a still a mostly plant-based diet, but with some animal foods. Maybe if I hadn't been eating all of the TVP I would not have had problems with the vegan diet as I do believe that a vegan diet can be healthy. I even have a chapter on "The Benefits of a Vegan Diet" in my book "Creationist Diet."

But all of that said, if you don't have a problem with TVP, then this cookbook would be of great benefit. But I would be careful about eating too much TVP until you're sure it's not a problem for you.

    5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!.......2000-12-01

This book is really a wonderful beginners cookbook for TVP. I've made many of the recipes in it and they all turn out great. My husband, a dedicated meat eater, LOVES the TVP Sloppy Joeys! He loves sloppy joes with meat, but he likes these even better. There isn't much vegetarian food that anyone will enjoy, whether vegetatarian or not. I can't imagine being a vegetarian without TVP. If you like TVP, you need this book.

Anyone who thinks that they could never give up meat will find true enlightenment in The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook. Eating vegetarian does not mean giving up hearty, filling, and, most importantly, deliciously satisfying food. Vegetarian cuisine is not often associated with indulgence, but in this book food writer, chef, and cooking instructor Robin Robertson provides recipes for hearty, soul-satisfying--yet surprisingly elegant--dishes that will entice vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike. Hoisin Eggplant Balls are a rich and flavorful appetizer, replacing that old standby, the chafing dish of little meatballs. In Compari-Scented Vegetable Stew with Fennel and Orange Zest, cured olives and chickpeas provide a substantial backdrop for a heavenly mingling of the more delicate flavors, resulting in an intense and sophisticated entrée. Ginger-Sesame-Glazed Portobello Steaks over Wasabi Mashers relies on an aromatic marinade to add complexity to these "meaty" mushrooms. Familiar comfort foods are also well represented: Mushroom Barley Soup, Flaky Potpie, Layered Vegetable Lasagne, and more. Even the most elegant recipes in the book are surprisingly easy to prepare, and each offers the many advantages of a vegetarian diet without depriving anyone of their beloved indulgences. --Robin Donovan

    5 out of 5 stars WOW what a book........2007-05-13

I did not grow up a vegitarian. I grew up enjoying My mother's hearty meals. I have been a vegitarian now for 18 years and have longed for one of those hearty meals. Over the years my wife and I have found resturants on our travels that offered hearty meals but we could never get copies of the recipes. On a recent visit to my brothers he and his wife recommended this book. The first recipe I prepared was a pot pie and was it good! My wife is waiting for me to make another one. We both enjoy researching the recipes and making them. But, we enjoy eating them even more! If you like cooking, but don't like bad surprises then get this book. We have never found a bad recipe.

    5 out of 5 stars Delicious but time-consuming recipes.......2007-05-01

I have been a vegetarian for 10 years. In that time, I have collected several vegetarian cookbooks and scoured hundreds of websites, most of which only contain a few recipes that I actually like. The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook is by far the most valuable cookbook I have ever purchased. I continue to try new appetizing, filling recipes that become part of my regular repotoire.

At first I found the cookbook a bit disappointing because it seemed to have so many "exotic" ingredients. I was expecting more home-style American food, wheras this book contains numerous Asian, Indian, etc inspired recipes. But then I tried some of the recipes, and realized their brilliance. This isn't comfort food because it's always the traditional American foods you grew up with, although it does have some recipes like that. It's comfort food because of the filling textures and flavors, that unlike plates of steamed vegetables, leave you satisfied.

I have tried around 30-40 of the recipes in this book, and loved most of them. This is the one cookbook I TRUST is not going to give me flavorless rabbit food. Yes, there is a salad chapter, which I really have not speant that much time on, but the many other recipes are totally worth the price of this book.

The only real flaws are the difficulty of finding some of the ingredients, particularly exotic spices or vegetables that can only be found at an [Insert Ethnicity] grocer or a "well stocked grocery store." At best, I might be able to find them 45 minutes away at the nearest Whole Foods. Soemtimes I just end up substituting, and the results aren't always great.

Also, the recipes are invariably hugely time consuming to make. 2 hours is not uncommon. I wish she'd make a quick vegetarian meat and potatoes book because I just don't have all night on weeknights to spend cooking.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent cookbook.......2007-02-13

I bought this book after checking it out of the library and wanting to copy every recipe. Every entree we have tried has been wonderful- especially the sweet potato pot pie. Even my non-vegetarian husband has been wolfing down stuffed bell peppers, cassaroles and (gasp) tofu! Sometimes we just want homey comfort food- and this cookbook offers chapter after chapter of it.

5 out of 5 stars Creative, hearty meals.......2006-07-23

I love this book! Most of the recipes are easy to prepare, and the dishes are different from the typical fare you'll find in the average vegetarian cookbook. (OK.. there is one recipe for hummus...) As other reviewers have pointed out, it often calls for fake meat products, so if you don't care for them, this may not be the book for you. However, if you do enjoy seitan, soy crumbles, faux sausages and the like, this book offers many creative ways to prepare them. My favorite recipes are the Vegetarian Pot Roast (made with seitan and a to-die-for marinade), Tofu and Mushroom Piccata, Red Beans Bourguignon, Maple-Mashed Sweet Potatoes, Plan-Ahead Potato Latkes, Spicy Tofu Po' Boys, and Seitan Cheese Steaks.

4 out of 5 stars This book is great.......2006-06-15

My only complaint with this book is that many of the recipes call for fake meat, which I try to avoid eatting to much of.

With that aside, you can always find a nice filling dish in here. Most of the recipes can be easily veganized, and the author gives recomendations for how to do this. The book also doesn't call for too many oddball ingredients, and they are usually well described.

This cook book doesn't have any pictures, but it doesn't really need any. I use this book anywhere from 2-4 a week, and it shows by having food all over it. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Practicality for the kitchen.......2005-08-14

This book helps vegetarians, and especially meat-eaters who wish to become vegetarians gradually, to adapt regualr recipes to vegetarian ones with their mock-up recipes using veggie ingredients instead of meat ones. Great book.

3 out of 5 stars Only for Beginners.......2004-02-04

I haven't been experimenting in vegetarian/vegan cooking for more than a few months and I didn't find anything helpful in this book. Most of the recipes are just traditional recipes that call for a substitute for meat. For example: any semi-experienced cook knows to substitute store bought soy meatballs in a spaghetti and meatballs recipe. The recipe for macaroni and cheese is quite pointless. Anyone can substitute soy cheese in a traditional recipe like that; it's not rocket science.

There are no recipes for seitan, only broths in which to cook it. In fact, almost every recipe calls for a pre-manufactured meat substitute. This is a very common problem in vegetarian cookbooks. In the beginning of the book the author pokes fun at other vegetarian cooks who use hard to find ingredients but yet every recipe requiring sweetner calls for "FruitSource" sugar which is very hard to find, and very expensive compared to beat or cane sugars.

I really want to give this book 1 star but it does have a lot of variety and there are a few recipes that are quite good. It would be useful to someone who doesn't know quite how to start eating a vegetarian diet, but experienced cooks should try another book.

    5 out of 5 stars Mouth-watering and healthy!.......2001-07-16

I was very pleased with this innovative book! Lots of great recipes to please the vegetarian...especially if you are cooking for those who are still meat-eaters! They will be fooled! I have made the Spring Rolls more than once and they are always a hit! I wish I could visit Tanya's restaurant...

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......1999-10-10

I recently moved to Palm Springs California and was reccommended to a unique restaurant concept here called "Native Foods." It was there that I experienced as a non-vegetarian really some unbelieveable full flavored cuisine, all vegetarian! I noticed the book on display, the owner of the restaurant, Tanya Petrovna is also the co-author of this book. I took the book home and haven't been disappointed by a recipe yet! It's great to have the restaurant nearby as well! Their website is fun too. It's all great!

1 out of 5 stars Didn't see any Quick or Easy recipes in it.......2001-10-06

This is LITERALLY gourmet, not for the everyday cook trying for a better diet!

When I decided to get this book I was expecting to do a little more cooking than average since it had gourmet in the title. And when I got it, it was cool that there were helpful things about different grains and so on that I didn't know before.

But as I looked through the recipes I knew I was never going to make any of them. They had ingredients that were not only hard to find but I wouldn't want to eat them in the first place. (I noticed sea vegetables were in there a bit, ick) I was hoping more for a cookbook that used everyday ingredients from the home and local supermarkets.

All in all it was a nice look see, and a few facts that were new. But I returned mine for a refund.

I have hundreds of cookbooks and have been cooking a long time. This cookbook stands out on my shelf. I could never make a really good stir fry until Leslie explained the steps and possible stir fry combinations to me in her cookbook. She also has excellent recipes for sometimes difficult to find vegan, wheatless and sugarless recipes. I love this cookbook
