When in doubt, Pig Out!
“To eat is human; to pig out, divine!” Garfield’s glorious, gluttonous philosophy is on full display in this new collection of comics. As everyone knows, when it comes to food, the cat just loves to make a pig of himself!
Customer Reviews:
If you collect - you must purchase this book!.......2007-02-09
I have every single Garfield book beginning with #1 - this is just another wonderful addition to what will surely be a cherished collection by my children when they are old enough to appreciate it.
GARFIELD IS BACK! .......2006-06-03
This is the best Garfield book ever released. I got it before it came out in Australia. I had the previous book Garfield Older and wider. That was a funny one. His 42nd had not lost a beat. I loved the book. You should to. It contains comics from the 28th July 2002 until February 2003. I reccomend that you get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Garfield Pigs Out: Oh yeah .......2006-06-02
BERTHA LOST WEIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, that isn't the highlight of the book (You remember fat Bertha from a previous collection? She lost 200 pounds in here!), but it doesn't mean it isn't a great strip. The book contains really great strips, including diner scenarios, christmas and others, with quoteable slogans and laugh out loud gags, this is one of the best collections this side of Loses His Feet. Funny extras (Garfield's favorite games to play with spiders), funny logos, funny cover, even (Two pigs looking bug eyed. There's something you don't see every day!). An all around good buy and great read.
Still funny - most of the times.......2006-03-05
Okay, so this is book number 42. I have felt, at times, that Jim Davis was running out of funny stories when it comes to Garfield.
This book, however, has been refreshingly funny. I enjoyed the read and found myself laughing out loud quite a few times. The bright colors and the nice compact size of the book helped also.
Still too short - as always (this is a theme for me with comic books), but still a good purchase.
The Best Book Ever!.......2006-02-28
this is without a doubt the best garfield book ever!

Customer Reviews:
This is a wonderful book!.......2006-01-11
Clarence really has it all. He's a "wee" pig with a nice apartment in the city. And he is fortunate enough to take a vacation. He's excitedly boarding a bus for a ranch out west. Clarence is even excited about the bus ride.
Things look pretty gloomy when Clarence arrives at the ranch. He's too late for dinner, he's forgotten his favorite pillow, and there isn't a familiar face in sight.
Life is brighter when the next morning Clarence meets Smoky, a large purple horse. They become fast friends and partake in simple adventures together. But when Smoky is no longer needed at the ranch, Clarence fears he'll never see his friend again. Clarence must figure out a way to keep his friend with him. Will he?
Clarence has pluck! And his sense of adventure is wonderfully refreshing. The delightful illustrations add so much to this lovely story of friendship and "going the extra mile" to stay together.
I found myself chuckling numerous times when I looked at the pictures of Clarence packing, having snacks on the bus and line dancing with Smoky. But my favorite is the last illustration in the book as it represents love and friendship.
Armchair Interviews says: Children will enjoy Clarence and Smoky's adventures and we suspect their parents and grandparents will also.
Darling book about friendship!.......2002-10-15
One of our teaching assistants came to me and begged for this title to be added to the library collection. After checking the book out online, I ordered it. To my delight, it arrived in my book order, and I immediately read it to my 2nd graders in library. We all fell in love with Clarence and Smoky. Both characters are well written and delighfully drawn. The simplistic storyline can easily be read by beginning readers. This is a must for every personal collection!
A Special Tale of Love and Friendship............2001-12-12
Clarence, a city dwelling little pig, sets out on his first big vacation to a dude ranch, out west. After a long and interesting bus ride, he arrives and meets Smoky, a very large and friendly purple horse who introduces him to all the pleasures of western ways. Smoky takes him on long rides through the mountains and canyons, teaches Clarence to play cards with the boys, line dance, and perform on the washtub in a cowboy band. They eat, nap, and even read stories together. It's a wonderful week. But as his vacation comes to an end, Smoky tells Clarence he's getting too old to work on the ranch anymore, and is going to be sold. Best friends are hard to come by, and Clarence can't stand the thought of never seeing his favorite horse again. So he uses all his bus money to buy Smoky, and together they begin the long ride back to the city. It may take years, but as long as they're together, they have all the time in the world..... Jean Ekman Adams has written a delightful story with a gentle message about loyalty, compassion, and friendship, that won't be lost on young readers. Her simple and engaging text, with its satisfying, happily ever after ending, is beautifully enhanced by her charming, bold, and vibrant illustrations, full of endearing ranch characters, and subtle, humorous detail. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Clarence Goes Out West And Meets A Purple Horse, is a sweet and entertaining, feel good story, that is sure to put a smile on everyone's face. This soon-to-be classic, is a picture book youngsters will beg to read again and again.
Fun life lessons.......2001-05-08
Not only does my daughter thoroughly enjoy Clarence & Smoky & the colorful illustrations, but I like the idea that she's getting fun lessons on compassion, friendship & priorities. Having lived in the big city & now finding myself in "the West," I truly enjoy this book myself. (Or perhaps it's my similar tendencies to pack my favorite snacks & not enough clothes when I travel...)This is one of the few books I don't mind reading 4 times before bed!
Loved it, Loved it, Loved it.......2001-01-19
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed Gene Adams book. After working on dude ranches for 10 years and I can relate. I think children will will love Clarence and Smokey, and have fun going on adventures with them. I hope there will be more to come from Gene, Clarence and Smokey.

Book Description
A mouse counting on a snack
A peckish mouse on the hunt for a light snack - something like a piece of cheese - climbs up the table and finds a feast fit for a king. He prepares an enormous platter filled with everything from chicken legs to tacos to cupcakes - and of course there's cheese, too. However, the cat is onto him, and a chase ensues as the mouse desperately shoulders his smorgasbord back to his hole - but it's too small! All the food flies up, up, up, landing on the unfortunate feline. All except the cheese, that is, which bounces safely into the mousehole.
In addition to being a happy adventure with the simplest of texts and hilarious pictures, there is the bonus of counting the items of food the mouse piles on - and later loses - from the single cheese portion up to the ten slices of chocolate cake.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for pre-schoolers - and the rest of us!.......2006-04-09
This is a clever, fun counting book with a hungry mouse gathering delicious goodies for a snack. He ends up with way too much on his plate and forgets about the cat which results in mouse losing almost everything he is carrying back to his mouse hole. The illustrations are especially good in this book which adds to the fun.
If You Give A Mouse a Banquet.......2005-11-30
It's one thing to draw a cute little mouse with which kids can identify, but it's even better when you see things from the mouse's point of view. The McFarland spousal team presents a perfect marriage of text and illustration in a delightful cat and mouse story that doubles as a counting book.
The small mouse has small goals-just a little snack ("Something like a piece of cheese") for his hungry tummy. However, as we follow the mouse up the dining room table leg, we share a delectable surprise: There's a feast on that table (perhaps for Christmas); a spread so large and colorful that it elicits a "WOW!" and a "YUM," from the mouse, who, in a recurring motif, begins to "flex those muscles," and "crack those knuckles." As he slides all the different treats off the tables, the reader can count them from one piece of cheese up through six "tasty tacos," and finally (and excitedly!) ten slices of chocolate cake.
There's a wonderful picture of the bottom of a tabby cat's feet as MOUSE returns home with his plate of food ("UH OH!"). There's a collision, flying food, and an unhurt cat lying underneath the spilled platter contents. There's also a "happy mouse" who, though he doesn't get the banquet, does munches happily (in his rocking chair) on the little snack he wanted initially. This is an amazingly fun book, packing its own banquet of color, emotion, and excitement in it 30 pages. The McFarlands take a prosaic tale and turn it into a riotous adventure and counting book, featuring a very appealing mouse with loads of personality. Printed on very high quality, glossy paper (the kind you love to touch and look at), "Mouse Went Out to Get a Snack" and its hero will win your heart over--I hope this team has more Mouse books planned!
Great Mouse Adventure.......2005-10-07
In the tradition of great mouse-adventure stories where the quest is to eat LOTS of food while avoiding detection from either cats or humans, MOUSE WENT OUT TO GET A SNACK by Lyn Rossiter McFarland is a gem. I would say MOUSE WENT OUT TO GET A SNACK is a combination of your typical mouse book such as MOUSE MESS and a counting book such as Eric Carle's THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR. The essential plot is that very sensibly "Mouse went out to get a snack. Something like a piece of cheese." However, overwhelmed by the table's bounty he ends up with "1 piece of cheese, 2 plump plums, 3 baby carrots, 4 fried chicken legs, 5 ears of corn, 6 tasty tacos, 7 assorted jelly beans, 8 colorful cupcakes, 9 jolly gingerbread men, [and] 10 slices of chocolate cake." However in his greediness, he failed to take into consideration two things: the cat AND the size of his mouse hole! He ends up after all with a sensible snack of a single piece of cheese.

Mama and Papa are firm: lights out at eight o'clock. But their little piglet is afraid of the dark. They say, "If you can figure something out, go ahead." So the piglet devises an ingenious series of contraptions that allow him to obey his parents while still keeping the light on long enough to fall asleep. Dominoes, tricycles, bowling balls, and baseball bats play a part as each action and reaction leads gradually to the final tug on the lamp's switch. Follow Arthur Geisert's detailed etchings as they reveal each step of kinetic wonder leading gradually to lights out.

I like these books. I read them to my preschoolers and through the use of the pictures they're building their vocabulary and they get excited, because they can help "read" the story. The stories are cute too!
good for teaching ESL.......2003-05-26
I just finished teaching one of my English classes about food, and I forgot I had this book. That's a shame.
This delightful book is about a porcine family which loads so many food items that the picnic basket becomes too heavy to lift, so they have their meal indoors.
Gets young readers excited that they can do it themselves!.......1999-06-03
This book is alot of fun for beginner readers!! My 5 yr old loves to read it over and over because he can!!! Would love to have more books like it in our family library !!!

The books are easy to read. They offer suggestions for parents to help their child read and things to talk about. My 4-year-old can read each of these books ... on his own. A weird babysitter.......2002-10-02
Just imagine if a pig hired a wolf to take care of her children. What would happen? The mother pig was so out of it that she didn't see that the babysitter had a long furry tail and sharp teeth. Children from the ages of 5 to 10 would like this book. The pictures are funny and detailed. I give this book 5 stars!
A little icky.......2002-03-16
The first time I saw this book I thought nothing of it other than - it's a cute story about pigs victorious over the big bad wolf. A classic folktale theme. But then I read the book to a group of children in a storytime and got some suprising reactions. A few of the children were pretty disturbed by this story. I have to admit, it is troubling. The pigs vs big bad wolf theme works fine in a folklore context, but when you take the wolf and make her into a babysitter...
This book is about parents unknowingly hiring a bad person as a babysitter. They know nothing about her. "I don't like babysitters," said Benjamin. "Oh," said Mrs Pig, looking vague, "well, she's coming from the agency so I'm not sure what her name is, but you're sure to like her."
The babysitter turns out to have bad intentions towards the children. After Mr. and Mrs Pig leave the house she creeps up to the children's bedroom and snatches one of the children from the bed.
This story has very quickly lost its innocence. If you can see past its modern connotations, that's fine. It is a good adventure. But it is just a little too icky for me.
One of my children's all-time favorite books.......2001-11-16
I was looking for some of my favorite picture books of all time, and I was SO saddened to see that this book is "out of print - limited availability"! My children are in their late teens and early 20's and this is probably one of the books they enjoyed the most when they were little! I really hope all the books in this series get reprinted!

Mr. and Mrs. Pig have their hands full with 10 young piglets and they decide to go out for the evening. They get a sitter from "the agency" and leave the house. The sitter is dressed up like a woman, but your children will see that she is indeed a WOLF! Yes, a wolf babysitting for the piglets! After she gets them to bed, she preheats the oven and decides to try to catch Garth, the youngest pig.
While this may sound like a very frightening book, your kids will love it! The antics of the pigs as they save their brother Garth and send the babysitter packing will keep you laughing.
Please also look for Garth Pig and the Ice Cream Lady where the pigs send Garth out to get ice cream from the ice cream vendor who - you guessed it - turns out to be a wolf! The story ends happily ever after, but not before Garth goes for a terrifying ride in the ice cream truck and the other pigs use their ingenuity to outsmart the Ice Cream Lady.
