Customer Reviews:
adorable!.......2007-06-25
We love this book at our house. There is no plot, just a series of examples using cookies about what different words mean. A gentle lesson in ethics and vocabulary.
Delicious "Cookies".......2007-03-31
This is a delightful book that is beautifully illustrated and teaches wonderful character traits in a very special and entertaining way. I have already given out 5 books and have ordered 3 more. A must for every mother and grandmother. Great shower gift - along with cookie cutters and recipes.
A sweet way to teach complex ideas.......2007-03-27
I originally purchased an autographed copy of this book at the "Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art" while on vacation in Massachusetts last summer. I decided to purchase copies for some of my "mom" friends who love great illustrations, as well as thoughtful messages in the books they read to their children. This is a lovely book in every way, and explains some difficult concepts such as optimistic versus pessimistic, loyalty, pride, and modesty, all in relatable ways for young children. Jane Dyer's illustrations are perfect complements to Amy Rosenthal's words. A unique children's book that will remain in my library long after my own children are grown.
Best Gift.......2007-03-22
This book perfectly illustrates many charater traits that we hope young children will learn. It's a great gift idea...coupled with some chocolate chip cookies!
Adorable.......2007-03-18
My four year old loves this book, and so do I. Since we love to bake on special occassions, the book seems a lot more comprehendable to my child. She compares her own experiences with the lessons in the book, and loves it. Great book, and makes a great gift!

Book Description
When a world-famous shoe designer walked into his
surprise birthday party and saw the cake that was waiting
for him--a Manolo stiletto perched alluringly next to a
tissue-filled shoebox--it was his turn to ogle someone else's
talent. The cake, created by Elisa Strauss of Confetti Cakes
in New York City, was a sensation. Not only did everyone at
the party want to know how it was made, they wanted to
know how to create something as dazzling themselves.
This unique book contains projects for every skill level: from
gorgeous, sugar-dusted heart cookies to delightful billiard-ball
cupcakes, to sculpted cakes in the shape of wine bottles and
Chinese takeout boxes, to the extravagantly beautiful, threetiered
embroidery cake showcased on Sex and the City.
With delicious recipes, stunning creations for every occasion,
suggestions for time-saving shortcuts, and hot tips for fabulous
results, all illustrated with gorgeous photographs and easy-tofollow
diagrams, THE CONFETTI CAKES COOKBOOK is
a must-have for the outrageously chic baker in all of us.
Customer Reviews:
Very Cute Book.......2007-06-17
I have just begun taking cake decorating classes and thought to buy a couple of books to expand what I have learned in class. Although I am not a big fan of how fondant tastes I can't wait to try some of the cakes in this book. I like the fact that there are templates and recipies in the book and not just pictures.
Note: The Sugar cookie recipie on pg 53 on the flour amount, change the 4...cups as written to 2 1/4...cups. (It says it on her website also)
Great ideas.......2007-06-13
I found the Confetti Cake book to be full of wonderful ideas and recipes. It is not, however, for the new to cake decorating. But, after some practice, I think I will be able to make some of the cakes included in this book.
It has a great section on supplies needed and why. That was very helpful.
Absolutely Beautiful!.......2007-06-12
I am a foodie and baker, so I was looking for a cookbook that would show doable techniques to create standout cakes.
I've always been a bit intimidated by decorating with fondant and gum paste; chef/author Elisa Strauss gives perfect tips and guidance on how to work with fondant to create the perfect design.
For those who aren't everyday bakers, the cookbook starts with basic techniques and rules. It includes multiple foundational recipes for cakes and cookies. From there, the cookbook leads to several creative designs ranging from a cake that looks like a handbag (very cool!) to a cake that looks like classic baby blocks to a wedding cake that looks like it is embroidered with chocolate. (It's the wedding cake in Sex in the City when Charlotte marries Harry).
The real art is in the design and execution of these varied cakes. The designs are both elegant and whimsical. All of the designs are incredibly creative. This is a terrific cookbook and a must have for any baker.
The rubber duckie cupcakes are next on my list to try out!
Worst cake decorating book I ever bought.......2007-06-05
I ordered Confetti Cakes expecting exciting and wonderfu ideas for decorating my cakes and cupcakes. I waited with bated breathe until it arrived. I was so disappointed I nearly threw it away! There is not one cake or cupcake in this book that remotely looks appetizing. Who in the world would eat this stuff? All of the projects look as if they were made with Play Dough. There is a difference between cake decorating and arts and crafts. The yellow duck cupcakes made with broiche pans are simlpy disgusting. This is not food.
Beautiful !!!.......2007-06-01
A beautiful book.........very well written with clear instructions and photographs.
Gorgeous, elegant designs and lots of pictures to guide you.
One of my favourite books ....

Amazing book! Beautifully photographed, unique cookie designs inspires one to delve into the art of cookie creation. Excellent professional tips on how to be successful regardless of your skill level.
Not Your Grandmother's Cookie Book.......2007-01-19
This book is not for a beginner. Could have been written clearer with more explicit step by step directions. I wanted something a little more everyday with simple but quaint cookies that could be easily made by the busy novice with a job and children. The high end cookies in this book are more suited for decoration than they are for noshing on.

Customer Reviews:
Best book for cookies! .......2007-06-27
My mother-in-law is famous for her holiday cookie baking. For years, she's baked more than 120 dozen cookies around Christmas and this is the book she used. She gave me a copy three years ago and I've used it religiously to bake cookies ever since - not just at the holidays - but for school events, parties, hostess gifts and other functions (fortunately, my mother-in-law does not expect me to bake 120 dozen). :-)
This book is an invaluable resource for the most basic (chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, etc.) cookies, to the less common (egyptian rose leaves, cherry coconut bars, etc.) and will appeal to beginners and experts alike. Enjoy!
Daughter's pleasure.......2007-06-09

500 Cupcakes book.......2007-04-06
This is the best little cupcake book. Very easy recipes, with great success. Great for a gift.
This is the best collection of cupcake recipes there is........2007-02-07
This book contains great cupcake recipes and decorating ideas for kids. But it also has very adult cupcakes as well and they taste fabulous. This book is great.
Not quite cupcakes.......2006-10-26
Yesterday I received my long awaited copy of 500 Cupcakes (billed as "The Only Cupcake Compendium You'll Ever Need") from Amazon. Now, 500 cupcakes is a lot, and I figured a fair amount of them would be variations on each other (ie. base recipes with several variations) but what I didn't expect was that many of the "cupcakes" would be in fact, muffins.
This is not a "what makes a cupcake a cupcake and not a muffin" issue but there were actually a few chapters devoted to muffin recipes. Dozens of them. Which is well and good, I enjoy a good muffin but I was expecting a cupcake book.
Another bit of oddness was how many of the actual cupcake recipes were savory. To me, this makes several of them, in actuality, muffins. These were in addition to all of the actual muffin recipes.
There were also few icing recipes and many of the cupcakes were not supposed to be iced. Which raises the question: when a cupcake is a flavor like rhubarb and you are not icing it, is it a cupcake or a muffin?
Now, there were some good points, all of the recipes are fairly easy and contain few unusual or hard to find ingredients. There were also a few cupcake recipes for those with dietary concerns, for example, vegan or gluten free.
All in all, it is an affordable book ($10) with lots of ideas for cupcakes and muffins. Just don't buy it thinking you will end up with 500 different cupcake recipes.
USE CAKE FLOUR!.......2006-09-28
My husband bought this as a gift for me since I LOVE CUPCAKES! I have never baked anything that didn't come from a box, so I was excited to try it. We have tried a few of the recipes and the only suggestion I have is to use cake flour instead of the flours they recommend. When we followed the recipes exactly, the cupcakes didn't seem to be as fluffy as boxed cakes. However, once someone told me to try the cake flour, it made a huge difference. I recommend this book because of the varieties and its is cute too :) PS: I don't like the 500 Cookies book as much.
Misleading title -- but good recipes.......2006-09-17
There really aren't "500 recipes" in this book -- a lot of recipes they say "take the base and change it slightly" to get a new flavor, which is fine. But then there's an entire chapter on "special occasion" cupcakes for birthdays, Christmas, etc. that all use the same base cupcake recipe, but uses different color frostings and somehow that makes it a "different" cupcake to add to the total.
I also take issue with "the only cupcake compendium you'll ever need" bit. The recipes are good, but they are also geared toward the beginning baker -- simple but dummyproof. Other cookbooks I own have a lot more work and sometimes unsuccesful, but there's a huge difference in taste.
Still, it's recommended -- you can't go wrong with the Chocolate Mud cupakes, and dozens of the recipes are surefire winners. This book is definitely more about making quick and beautiful cupcakes than getting the perfect recipe. I'm glad I own it, but I think most cake lovers will graduate on to bigger and better recipes kind of quickly.

Great for beginners and fun to do with kids.......2007-04-04
This book is GREAT, AWESOME, FABULOUS, FANTASTIC!!! I just can't say enough!!
I am a stay at home mom always looking for some new activities to do. I have never baked anything but choclate chip cookies and cupcakes from a box, and I wanted to try something new even though I am a bit challenged in the kitchen. :-)
This book outlines everything you need to get started and even tells you where you can find your "equipment". At no time did I feel overwhelmed in getting started.
My 4 year old son and I, plus my neighbor and her kids (6yrs & 14yrs) had the best time decorating our Easter cookies. The kids especially enjoyed eating the last of the icing from the icing bags!! This is a great activity to pass a rainy day or cold afternoon stuck inside. My cookies didn't look like the author's, but I could see I was getting better at decorating with each cookie I did. I can't wait to bake some more!!
Looking for a cookie book? You MUST get this one..........2007-02-28
I have never experienced a cookbook such as this. Incredible, informative, and ingenious.
BEST instructional cookie book EVER.......2007-02-12
This is the best instructional baking/decorating book that I have ever read. It is interesting and helpful, and the pictures are beautiful! I would recommend this book for anyone from beginner to pro.
Cookie Sensations lives up to its name........2007-02-08
This is a great book about decorated cookies. It is easily read and understood and the technique can be completed by a beginner to intermediate cake/cookie decorator. The book includes a nice history of cookies and cutters and includes alot of illustrations through out. She lists a nice selection of suppliers and several delicious receipes for cookies and icings. There is a full page listing of color combinations, helping even a beginner decorator make lots of lovely shades of icings. She also includes a graduated color guide to help newbies and has a color chart page that gives you an idea of which colors look best together including a break down of when using a certain color for the outlines, what colors work best for the fill-in. The book also includes many cookie styles for birthdays to wedding, holidays to baby showers along with detailed instructions, photos and templates in case you don't have the cutter used or don't want to purchase one. The fill in method is not the color flow method as you can still see the lines where the icing was piped in, but if you chose to using the color flow method it would work well with these designs. I usually use the flow method myself but after seeing this more textured look, I have been incorporating it into my decorating and am finding the customers really like the look of them. It adds alot of visual interest to the cookie instead of it being just flat. I have also mixed the flow method and the textured method of this book together and it really works well together (ie.. flow method face and textured method clothing). All in all a great book for lot of fun ideas and a great deal for the price. I recommend this to any cake/cookie decorating library.
Cookies . . . not just for breakfast anymore!.......2007-01-22
I've ordered cookies from the author and they were absolutely amazing! I've already started to purchase the necessary supplies as explained in the book. I can't wait to get into the kitchen! A great book even for someone who can't bake!!

Artistic.......2007-06-08
This is another of those step-by-step cake guides that was very well worth the money. This particular book kept selling out at Michaels so I had to go online and purchase. Definitely not disappointed
Great resource!.......2007-05-20
I just got into cake making and sugar craft and this book is the first I ordered. It is great and I've had a lot of success following Porschens' advice. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that not all temperatures and cake pan times needed are included. For example, I made a cake from two square 8x8 pans and the only baking directions I could find were for either cupcakes or a sheetcake. Instead of baking at 400 degrees as suggested I lowered the temp to 350 and just kept checking until done. Still came out great, thank goodness. The basic cake recipe tastes wonderful with the soaking syrup (I'd never tried that before)but the sugar cookie recipe was a little bland. Beautiful cookies though! I REALLY like this book and will be happy to take credit for Porschens beautiful dessert designs for years to come!
Really pretty party cakes.......2007-05-08
One of the best. I own a lot of cake decorating books and this is one of my bibles. As somebody said, it's looks as good inside as looks outside. Porshen work is so fresh, clean and neat that you can not stop checking it over and over. I do not like make recommendations, but either if you are a beginner or a professional, you will love this book
recycled ideas.......2007-03-31
I flipped through this book at our local library. I started out being pretty impressed because the book is nicely done, but then I started seeing a lot of recycled ideas from various American cake and cookie artists . . . even a couple that I had originated. That was rather disappointing.
Good Ideas, Taste Super Sweet, Tricks Missing.......2007-01-11
There's no doubt that Pretty Party Cakes is filled with innovations: edible butterflies, marzipan roses made with edible glitter, petit fours out of Bollywood.
BUT there is a heavy emphasis on fondant, an extremely sweet sugar dough that many find inedible, and royal icing, which is basically confectioner's sugar and egg white. In the European tradition, the cake portion tends to be dry.
I find some info missing: instructions on how to make mazipan roses leave out stuff like using the edge of a spoon to thin out the edge -- a well-known technique that is necessary to get the results in the photograph. I really find it unacceptable when cookbook authors omit these steps -- the ones them separate their finished results from yours. You're paying big bucks for the book -- they should part with all the secrets.
So, buy the book, be dazzled, pick up a few ideas, but go elsewhere for recipes -- and buy other books to expand your knowledge.

Wonderful and easy!.......2007-02-11
I bought this book based on the other reviews, and because over the years I have enjoyed baking with the holiday season baking magazines put out by Better Homes & Gardens. I have had this book about two weeks and have made the Pecan Bars and the Banana Bars. I took the Pecan Bars to a party and within 2 minutes of putting the cookie platter down I had three people ask for the recipe. I made the banana bars yesterday, and thought that I had died and gone to heaven. They are so rich and wonderful especially with the browned butter frosting. I know that I am going to find all kinds of favorites in this book, and that I will have lots of fun baking new things!
Great and Original Recipes.......2006-09-01
The Snickerdoodle Pinwheels recipe (p. 174) is one of our favorites. It's better than the traditional Snickerdoodles.
There's something for everyone. Nut lovers, nut haters. Chocolate lovers. etc.
Good Cookies.......2005-07-06
I like this book very much, and recommend it highly. It is a rare combination of 2 things that I enjoy every much: rich and fattening cookies, and recipes that work.
This book has 475 cookie recipes that have all been thoroughly tested by the test kitchens at Better Homes and Gardens. As such, every recipe I have ever done from this book has worked the first time through. With this many cookies, you are sure to find a recipe that fills the bill, and you will find rarities such as rosettes, cookie gun recipes, and pizzelle. There were some that I did not like, but that is not because the recipe was faulty, but because I just didn't like the cookie (this is especially true of the some of the bar cookies). This is also a handy book if you have youngsters who want to help you make cookies: the recipes won't fail you, and there are several "smiley face" sort of cookies that will appeal to children, and also many bars that are easy to do, even for children.
Also commendable is the format. The book is plastic spiral bound, which means that the book lies flat on the table when you are trying to do a recipe from it. Each recipe has a full page devoted to it, meaning that the text is nice and large and easy to read, and the recipe is nicely spread out over the printed page and not just jammed into a corner of it.
There are a few problems:
1) the most aggravating of which is side-bar mania, that is the placing of important information about techniques, ingredients, and equipment in random places throughout the book where you will never find them when you need them.
2) The actual introductory material on how to bake cookies in general in the first chapter is rather scanty. If all the above mentioned side-bars where collected and put into the first chapter, it might make for a decent primer on cookie making.
3) at one point, the authors suggest that you boil dried fruits in brandy on the stove. This sounds like a good recipe for a kitchen fire.
4) the chapter on bar cookies, in a side bar, admonishes you to always use the correct size pan. By my count, however, the chapter uses 5 different pan sizes, and you are unlikely to have all of them. Would it have been that much trouble to standardize all the bar recipes to one or two pan sizes?
5) this book had its share of marginal recipes: those that used mixes or store-bought cookie doughs, plus all those that have oats and/or dried fruit in them.
6) The flour measurement is spoon-and-sweep, but this important information is buried in a section titled "What makes cookies too dry?"
It has the following chapters (the chapter titles were too cute by half): Cookie Basics, Sweet Spoonfuls, Heavenly Hand-Shaped Cookies, Mold and Pressed Shapes, Slices of Delight, Rolling Pin Favorites, Fabulous Filled Cookies, Simple Shortcuts, Best Bars and Brownies.
Eighty tips for making homemade cookies better.......2004-05-06
Enhanced with more than one hundred mouth-watering color photographs; a comprehensive index and an separate index listing cooky recipes especially appropriate for the holidays; eighty tips for making homemade cookies better than any that can be bought in even the more upscale bakeries; and easy-to-follow methods for making, baking, and decorating cookies, bars, and brownies; the Better Homes & Gardens' Biggest Book Of Cookies is a spiral bound compendium of cookies that will make you hungry just to browse through! From Pecan Crispies; Spiced Apple Drops; Chocolate-Covered Cherry Cookies; and Peppermint Candy Cookies; to Scandinavian Almond Bars; Watermelon Cookies; Gingerbread Cookies; and Mascarpone Creams, every recipe comprising the Biggest Book Of Cookies will turn even the most novice kitchen cook into a world class cookie baking chef!
No other book neded.......2004-04-02
This is THE book, you will need no other. I have been buying the grocery checkout seasonal cookie books for years and now I can give them away. All of my tried and true favorites are in one place now. I bake a lot of cookies and I have been pleased with every recipe I have tried. I look forward to new discoveries. I especially like the separate indexes; holiday suggestions are featured separately. The index also features listings by ingredient, so if you are looking for apricot, or pecan, or oatmeal, you can bake a treat based on what you have at hand. I have bought three of these as gifts already--bridal shower season is here. I collect cookie cookbooks and lately this is the one that I reach for most often. It is underpriced for the value. If it is not in here, there is probably not a recipe for it. I highly recommend this as an investment purchase... You deserve it.

We got this book for our 5 year old that always wants to help in the kitchen. She loves to help make the choice and then cook it up. So far, so good!
My kids LOVE this book.......2007-01-09
I bought this for my step kids for our weekly "kids cook night". There are lots of fun things for them to make but there aren't a ton of dinner dishes in here.
For kids only, not the adults.......2007-01-06
This is a good basic, and I mean basic cookbook to get the kids involved, but I wouldnt use it daily. Its too simple for the average cook. I would not pay more than what Amazon wants though.

Mouse-a-rific.......2007-05-10
I love this collection of books! And it comes with a CD! It is a great value and a great gift for friends with small children. I bought one for everyone I know that is starting a family. I highly recommend it.
Wonderful Collection.......2007-03-27
My 4 year old daughter loves this series. In this book are four of the titles (If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, If You Give A Pig A Pancake, If You Give A Moose A Muffin and If You Take A Mouse To SChool)plus songs, activities and recipes to accompany each story. The CD reads through all of the stories and sings the songs. The stories are easy to follow along and the illustrations are wonderful. They start with the title of the book and progress from there. For example, If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk and so on. The stories are engaging and my daughter's reading skills are progressing rapidly. I have fun changing the stories up. I'll say the mouse will ask for a glass of water and my daughter will correct me. They are great for early reading skills and memory. If You Give A Pig A Party is her other favorite after mouse cookie which we purchased separately. This is the one my daughter usually asks for before bed. She'll snuggle up with the book, we put the CD on and it winds her down. The Cd lasts approximately 30 minutes. Ihighly reccomend this series for beginning readers.
Wish I'd had this as a kid!.......2007-02-07
I came across this book while looking for a gift for my neice. I've heard the "Give a mouse..." saying a thousand times, but had never read the book. What a treat.
I didn't get to check out the CD, but the book alone is worth the price. The recipies and activities are simple and would be something fun to do with your kid.
This is a book you can enjoy reading to them as much as they enjoy hearing it -- the illustrations are cute and have lots of hidden details to notice.
Excellent!!.......2007-01-10
