Yellow Light is one of those albums that rewards patience. This low-key, rootsy collection from Seattle singer-songwriter Jon Hyde resonates with a subtle, alt-country soulfulness that recalls the likes of Paul Burch, the Jayhawks, Wilco, and Neil Young in one of his pastoral moods. In Hyde's case, as with the aforementioned artists, low-key shouldn't be mistaken with laidback. Indeed, there are thistles mixed into Hyde's bouquet of flowering melodies. "The world that's opening up is really like a broken window," he declares in "Let It Come," the album's penultimate song and a suitable summary of the flashes of bliss and dejection that have preceded it. With nothing left to add, Hyde and company sign off with an incongruously jaunty but oddly apt instrumental. And then you might find yourself simply returning to the first track. It's that kind of album. --Steven Stolder

Product Description
Yellow Light is a rock CD with strong attention given to melody. The arrangements of the songs run the gamut from acoustic guitar/voice (throw in a little pedal steel...), to full band augmented by pedal steel, accordion, B3 organ, violin, dobro and more. Rather than create a collection of all one sound, the songs are stylistically diverse from track to track and held together by Hyde's voice and songwriting. Here you will find an excellent supporting cast who rise to the occasion, coloring each sonic landscape from a different palate as dictated by the song. It is a Cd laden with memorable hooks and oblique lyrics and begs repeated listenings.
