From the Label
DIRTBALL, "Turn Up the Barn" (Planetary) For their third CD, the Dirtball guys -- Wes Freed, Neal Furgurson, Jeff Liverman, Josh Camp, Jyl Freed and Mark Snyder -- chose to record in a former dairy barn on the edge of Goochland County. Talk about a perfect aura for the band's rustic, rootsy sound. Songs such as "The Best I Can Do" and the dobro-tinged "I Don't Feel This Way" clip-clop with melancholic, high lonesome words about the muddy James and working in Rutherford County -- the type of everyman, blue collar scenarios that continue to attract Richmond fans. But the band is also capable of roof-raising, as the Celtic-brushed do-si-dos of "Whiskey and Wild Women" and jagged opening guitar riffs of "Call Me Charity" attest. Likewise, the Bible-quoting "Over and Over," buoyed by Charles Arthur's lap steel guitar, will make a perfect live sing-along.
