Sin Ropas "Three Cherries" Perishable The brilliance of Sin Ropas can be explained very simply: Tim Hurley. Having left Red Red Meat in the dust long ago and helping our forgetfulness with appearances in Loftus and Califone, he's decided to once again submerge himself, this time in the form of Sin Ropas. With Danni Iosello (Califone) on drums/percussion, Noel Kupersmith (Brokeback) and a big slice of Hurley's own stoney production, Sin Ropas captures the plains of the Midwest in the same way Calexico captures the barren desert of the West. Using stripped down arrangements with a leaning towards the unusual --melodicas, homemade percussion, tweaker synthesizers-- the songs never move past the downtrodden. Yet the tension created is wound so tight you swear the music is faster. Make sense? Experimentation sometimes causes stumbles so don't expect to be mesmerized for every second of this release, but the sheer impact of a song like "snakes in shoes" certainly helps erase the lapses.
