The Clears

Editorial Reviews
From the Label
In 1996 this band of three peeled themselves off the cover of some comic book somewhere and found themselves standing guileless and clear in the city of Memphis, TN. After raiding the city's pawn shops, stockpiling an arsenal of analog keyboards, angular guitars, vertical drums, and cheap, transistored, battery-op sound gear, they hastened into a nearby basement, where they began cranking out pop music as contagious as a virus and as hot as the petals of the opium poppy. Close your eyes and the music bubbles over you like a warm bath, as they steer you through a land of blue diamonds in moss-covered airwaves, cemented in a glorious neopolitan signature. They vibrate complete.

What wrought the Clears? Draw a mental dot-to-dot; the lost realms of Stax and Sun transgressed in a no-prisoners purloining of Beale St for Camp-as-catharsis. Except but c'mon it's not mere Camp simply b/c our friends bear the true rare gifts b/k/a tunes and a drummer! (And christ what a drum - custom built cocktail-model, standing required...) Armed with more Sat'day AM cartoon potential than a squadron of Pee-Wees/Weird Als, these three Memphis automata - Alicja Trout (g,v,k) Chris Clarity (k,v) Brad Pounders (d,v,k) - in just over a year, have emerged to record the great 80s pop synth-ony album, flipping large birds to any/all cries of "retro!" hurled and quietly brainwashing legions to conversion via their painfully infrequent but always overwhelming take on live music-theatricks, analogue + eyeliner-style. In '97 redoubtable bands such as the Geraldine Fibbers, Fuck and Two Dollar Guitar were unfortunate enough to have to follow the Clears on bills in clubs throughout the Eastern US.
