About the Artist
Over the past several years, the Pedal Steel Transmission have quietly carved their own niche in the Chicago underground music scene. Forged from bits and pieces of classic rock, indie, jazz and folk, the upstart foursome craft a witchs brew of passionate, heart-felt rock that owes as much to Buffalo Springfield as it does the Velvet Underground. Each with years of individual experience, the members bring their love of playing together with an aim of making the whole truly more than the sum of the parts. Their blending tonalities of sun-drenched improvisation and experimentation quickly puts one in mind of the sounds of late sixties psychedelia and rock, ala Woodstock or Monterey Pop. But when you think youve sensed their direction, the sound again changes, and you imagine yourself sitting quietly in your bedroom, swaying to the sighing melodies and harmonies in their concise songwriting, reminiscent of early seventies Neil Young, or the Allman Brothers, or the Stones. They are delicate and defined, manic and chaotic, all while remaining unified and focused. 2002 saw the release of their critically acclaimed In the Winter, It Makes the Dead Grass Look Green, taking listeners to uncharted territory on a roller coaster of dynamic cliffhangers, shimmering soundscapes and bombastic interludes. The release signaled a shift from their early rural roots, defying easy definition and shirking off the country images long associated with the pedal steel. The new full-length album, The Angel of the Squared Circle, is to be accompanied by extensive radio and touring support.
Product Description
With the release of "The Angel of the Squared Circle", the Pedal Steel Transmission emerges with its most commanding performance to date. Songwriters Dan Schneider and Gary Pyskacek have reached a new level of maturity and intensity, and both seem to have found their own distinct voices. Blending and weaving a cohesive story and experience throughout the record, the Pedal Steel Transmission has forged a memoir of lonely nights and harrowing demons, a cinematic experience of sexual and emotional self-destruction seen through the eyes of everyday confusion and anxiety.
From the tattered, apocryphal caravan sound of the albums opener "Waiting" to the quiet awake/asleep sounds of "Amy" and "Maritime Glare", the album unfolds into a beautiful story that ends all too soon. The albums diversity is soon felt in the razor-wielding cry of "Gilman Report", where the band pushes the limitations and boundaries of standard post-rock. The starvation of "I Saved the Last High Style for You", and the quiet sonnet of "In Mourning:Reprise" find the listener staring blankly out the window on a pale rainy Chicago afternoon.
"The Angel of the Squared Circle" achieves and exceeds the promise of "In the Winter it Makes the Dead Grass Look Green" (Cardboard Sangria, 2002), the breakthrough lp that gave the first indication of the capabilities of this ensemble. "Angel" documents their continuing evolution, capturing the sound of a band whose vision extends infinitely skyward.
