This sophomore release by former Dieselhed mainstay Virgil Shaw is as accomplished as it is typically idiosyncratic, its potent, quirky twang an ironic reminder that the label "alternative country" more rightly applies to contemporary Nashville's soulless pop than the heartfelt songs herein. With the graceful support of his band, the Killer Views, and guest vocal turns by troubadour Mark Eitzel, Shaw's deceptively folksy songs bound between aching heartbreaks and moments of downright ebullience. "Clock on the Wall" crackles with effusive jealousy at a tardy lover, while "Imaginary Guitars" floats along on pure, languorous charm. But as with most great singer-songwriters, viewpoint is everything, and Shaw's earthy, anxious voice often belies an art-school-bred sophistication that immediately surfaces on the metaphorical impressionism of "The Drawing" and "Wet Splashes," in which the singer finds a perfect allegory for life's and love's foibles in the hidden dangers of roadside puddles--in that respect, call him the Elvis Costello of the heartland. --Jerry McCulley
Product Description
"Virgil's songs fracture images, turn them sideways, and hold them up to the ultraviolet, letting us lucky ones see not just a snapshot, but the beautiful, warped depth of it all. He's damn near the best we got." - Jim Fairchild / Grandaddy
