Since main man David Gedge pulled the plug on the Wedding Present in order to concentrate on his Cinerama project, fans of the long-suffering English band's tales from love's battlefield have relied on compilations and scattered artifacts from the band's catalog to get their "Weddo" fix. This album contains the band's work from their final, confusing days--1995 to '97. While this was not the band's most outstanding period, they did manage to produce some terrifically heart-tugging pop songs. The breathless "Jet Girl" is offered in its regular and acoustic version. The whirling "Drive," the hopelessly glum "Love Machine," the intricately paced (and also glum) "Mercury," and the oh-so-wistful "Montreal" are all proof that even during their waning days they were a band capable of invention, smart turns of phrase, and stepping in front of cupid's arrow at nearly every turn. Added to the end of the disc are live versions of oldies "My Favorite Dress" and "Brassneck." A nice intro for new fans, with interesting add-ons for those already addicted. --S. Duda
