Product Description
Flare's LD Beghtol was a featured vocalist on The Magnetic Fields' critically acclaimed magnum opus, 69 LOVE SONGS, on which he sang "All My Little Words," "For We Are the King of the Boudoir" and "The Way You Say Goodnight," among others.
HUNG, on the venerable Le Grand Magistery label, is Flare's second full-length album, and the band's most cohesive and accessible effort yet. Lovers of literate, swirling pop psychedelia and experimental mayhem will delight in HUNG's epic songcraft, which will have you singing along to the giddy choruses even as you're sobbing into your absinthe. A veritable song cycle of Love and Sex and, of course, Death in The City. HUNG is a virtual tour of New York's darkly romantic, often traumatic underground, with excursions along the way to the Met (both), the Strand (ditto) and divers dives, bedrooms and gutters throughout the land. HUNG is also fine showcase for Flare leader LD Beghtol's most intense songwriting and passionate vocals to date.
The usual malange of massive strings, ukes, wheezy keyboards and other obscure instruments from the Flare arsenal are tastily complimented here by toy pianos, glockenspiels, handclaps, banjos and other aural surprises including Tibetan bells and singing saws. In addition to the sixty-something instruments used on HUNG, Beghtol and co-leader Charles Newman have created some of their richest arrangements ever with influences ranging from classic mid-period Beach Boys and Byrds to the more arcane harmonic realms of Gesualdo, Milhaud, Wire and Harry Partch. But as always, the songs themselves are the real stars.
