About the Artist
The history of Three and a Quarter is somewhat complicated but I think this is accurate-- The three boys met at the respective ages of 15, 15, and 14 while attending high school at the I.E.L. (Instituto Espanol de Lisboa) in Lisbon, Portugal. Having recently begun picking up the guitar and bass, the three would skip class to jam and figure out how to play their favorite songs. After various impromptu acoustic performances (the most memorable of these was the "Ricky's Bathroom Concert") the three played their first few gigs in 1995 with singer Paul Freitas (who at the time was playing with Sebastiano in a band called Apoca'lips) and the already infamous drummer and "green thumb" Pedro Gorman (known by some as "the Gorefest"). Although their band, Backwash, gained a considerable amount of fame in at least three different secondary schools, both Paul and Pedro decided to leave Portugal for University, and so the band broke up. ---Paul and Pedro currently reside in Lisbon. Paul has become an avid skater/surfer/photographer and now plays guitar for the exceptionally talented Portuguese hard-core band More Than Hate (link to their site). Pedro has given up his agricultural ambitions and now dedicates time to his writing and his work for National Portuguese television.---
After Backwash Guillermo, Seb and Alex continued to mess around, each taking turns at playing bass, guitar, drums and screaming (they still swap instruments for different songs to this very day). After various gigs under different monikers they eventually settled on name Three and a Quarter after being instructed to do so by the ghost of the late Sammy Davis Jr. (they complied with his wishes because he was a great tap dancer). In 1997 Three and a Quarter was nominated as one of the four most promising Portuguese bands for the next year (Blitz Magazine) and they went on to win Song of the Year (Antena 3 - Premios Maquete) for their song Skunk, and Best Live Performance (Raio-X Magazine). They played with some of Portugal's best and most legendary hard-core and underground bands (Skamioneta do Lixo, X-Acto, Tedio Boys, Crise Total, and Primitive Reason amongst others), as well as performing in many of Portugal's annual Music festivals alongside cool international bands like Sonic Youth, Portishead, The Cure and Morphine. As Three and a Quarter's fan base grew, they also became known for having developed an entourage of guest musicians and friends who would hang out on stage during shows and accidentally unplug cables and step on distortion pedals. This, along with their love of crowd surfing and an odd tendency to invite mass amounts of their audience up onto the stage with them, helped created a unique live experience that has been described by fans, and the media, as everything from "fucking awesome!! " to "kinda stooped." In 1998 the band recorded a 7 song EP which they called Quality Times (in honor of all the quality times that they had spent together) and released themselves, however, later that year Sebastiano and Alex both left Portugal to attend College in England and the USA, while Guillermo remained in Portugal. For the next two years the boys could only re-unite to play during summer and X-mas holidays but in 2000 the three took a year off of school and signed with the American independent label Jahnotion. After a brief trip to Morrocco the band moved to New York City where for 6 cold months they wrote songs, played shows and worked on incredibly spendthrift recipes for their upcoming Punk Cookbook (they are still waiting for a publishing company to pick this book up). The result of this cold, foodless winter was Chubby Dubby, the band's soon to be released debut album, recorded and produced by Jason Corsaro (Iggy Pop, Soundgarden) along with the band. Currently the band is skateboarding, snowboarding, playing Capoeira and preparing to tour in the USA this summer (as well as building this website).
