There are lots of big names in the postrock world playing all over this unheralded classic of experimental music: Henry Kaiser, Christoph Heemann, Jim O'Rourke, Thymme Jones, Dylan Possa. And they play exceptionally well, laying down fractured grooves, then subtly dropping delightfully abrasive noise all over the place like some secret jam session between Faust and Shellac. But the production is the real star, as O'Rourke and Steve Albini play dub doctors at the mixing board, recording half the instruments at extreme, Digital Hardcore levels of distortion. The other half of the sounds are recorded at low volume, dropping different elements into the mix and tweaking things in the course of a piece. Recorded in 1994, When in Vanitas is an out-there rock record with the soul of brilliant, forward-thinking electronic music. --Mike McGonigal
