About the Artist
Far from the blushing, sensitive 'singer-songwriter boy' image that seems to clog nightclubs and guitar stores all over the country, New York City's Mike Errico takes a stance that is influenced by punk-folkies like Ani DiFranco and Dashboard Confessional, while imbuing it with his own innate sense of Stevie Wonder-era soul music. Mike offers pop music as both party favor and healing tonic.
Since the release of his 1999 debut, Pictures of the Big Vacation, Errico has spent his time touring, playing on many independent records with emerging artists, releasing his live CD Tonight I Drink You All (Engine Company), scoring music for theater and TV, and reevaluating his relationship with the turbulent business of music. "Between Pictures and Skimming, a revolution occurred in the music industry, says Errico. I turned down several 'traditional' deals, and worked on creating an artistic environment that allowed me, quite simply, to make a living making music during chaotic times."
Drawing upon new artistic inspiration and a new business plan, Errico hit the road, used the proceeds to make Skimming on his own terms, and then looked around for a release partner. In early 2003, Velour and Errico came together and worked out a management and label deal.
Errico was an emerging artist at Woodstock '99, and has opened for artists as diverse as Rusted Root, Semisonic, North Mississippi Allstars, Ari Hest, Dido, Vertical Horizon, Soulive, Our Lady Peace, Run DMC, Bob Weir and Ratdog, Bif Naked, Freedy Johnston, The Silos, Guster, Dar Williams, and many, many others.
Product Description
Skimming is the successful culmination of a three year struggle. After a difficult label experience, Mike turned his back on the biz and embarked on the classic American journey of rediscovery - he hit the road. Touring incessantly (and alone) for two years, he rediscovered what he was: a songwriter, a wry social observer, and above all, an entertainer. He wrote the eleven songs that make up this album, built a grassroots fan base, and used his touring proceeds to make this record. Simultaneously paying tribute to and defying the singer/songwriter model, Mike Errico is the 21st century troubadour.
Enhanced CD includes photos from the road (all taken by Mike), a studio diary, 4 bonus tracks and a rotating bonus MP3.
