From the Label
In 1975 Nils Lofgren was a critical favorite who hadn't made the crossover to popular appeal just yet. His supercharged live shows in the '70s would change that. And so would this album, a power-pop landmark first issued by A&M. After stints with Neil Young and Crazy Horse, this marked the first time that Lofgren retired the band name Grin and recorded under his own name.
NILS LOFGREN features the talented trio of Lofgren on guitar and vocals, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, and Wornell Jones on bass. The result is a lean but powerful sound geared equally to soaring melodies and high-velocity guitars. Two songs in particular would be associated with Lofgren over the years: The Goffin/King tune "Goin' Back" remains one of his best cover versions, surpassing the Byrds version of a few years earlier. And "Keith Don't Go" was an ode to the then-quiet Rolling Stone Keith Richards; it remains one of the most passionate songs ever written about rock'n'roll fandom. Other highlights include the bluesy "If I Say It, It's So" and "Can't Buy a Break".
