Ui are three musicians from Manhattan led by rock critic Sasha Frere-Jones. They've been around since 1992, and they perform progressive, rock-oriented instrumental music. Dwelling on drowsy, deliberate compositions that utilize sampling and hard-disc editing as well as an oblique/unique sound aesthetic, Ui stand apart from many other post-rock ensembles in their capacity to maintain a compelling groove. Painstakingly constructed, Lifelike reflects the serious hard work of a cerebral band. Bassist Wilbo Wright, drummer Clem Walmann, and engineer/co-producer Greg Frey all contribute to the finished sounds while Frere-Jones plays some downright elemental guitar licks. The trio utilize uncommon time signatures and lean heavily towards collective improvisation. This is very good post-rock. --Mitch Myers

Dropping horn swells into a postpunk idiom and blending genres via samplers and sequencers, Ui's sonics diversify--proving repetition needn't mean everything sounds the same.
