Get past the pure-pop sounds of Crowded House and the Chills, and you realize that the New Zealand indie-rock sound has always been an experimental lot--artists like Chris Knox, David Kilgour, and Peter Jefferies have made careers of mixing offbeat quirks with harmonies, a garage-rock sensibility, the occasional sample, and their oh-so-unique Kiwi humor. All this while, of course, Barbara Manning has been doing basically the same thing on the Northern Hemisphere--in bands like World of Pooh and SF Seals, in addition to her vast solo work. In New Zealand features Manning down under, recording with Kilgour, Knox, and other Dunedin (New Zealand's Liverpool) scenesters. The results are breathtaking--minimal production, a smooth vocal delivery from Manning, and the simple yet effective instrumentation that made bands like the Clean, Tall Dwarfs, and Renderers the cult favorites that they are. Sublime. --Jason Verlinde
