Dwight Twilley has been hailed as the Godfather of New Wave for putting hook- and riff-fueled rock & roll back on the radio in the mid-1970s with his shimmering debut single, "I'm On Fire." He then scored another big chart success a decade later with the infectious "Girls." And despite hitting the sort of jarring, midcareer record-biz potholes that have flattened lesser artists, the Tulsan motored on, often without the mixed blessings of a record contract. Twilley has earnestly claimed that all he was trying to do was write songs worthy of Lennon-McCartney and sing them like Elvis. Heady rhetoric be damned--he backs his claim with this solid collection of outtakes, demos, and studio oddities, and the songs' consistent quality makes you wonder what was going on between the ears of the A&R execs who rejected some of them.
