This delightful book leads you through the basic elements of programming in Scheme (a Lisp dialect) via a series of dialogues with well-chosen questions and exercises. Besides teaching Scheme, The Little Schemer teaches the reader how to think about computation. The authors focus on ten essential concepts of thinking about how to compute and demonstrate how to apply these concepts in inventive ways. The Little Schemer is an excellent book both for the beginner and for the seasoned programmer.

Book Description

<B>drawings by Duane Bibby</B>

foreword by Gerald J. Sussman

The notion that "thinking about computing is one of the most exciting things the human mind can do" sets both The Little Schemer (formerly known as The Little LISPer) and its new companion volume, The Seasoned Schemer, apart from other books on LISP. The authors' enthusiasm for their subject is compelling as they present abstract concepts in a humorous and easy-to-grasp fashion. Together, these books will open new doors of thought to anyone who wants to find out what computing is really about.

The Little Schemer introduces computing as an extension of arithmetic and algebra -- things that everyone studies in grade school and high school. It introduces programs as recursive functions and briefly discusses the limits of what computers can do. The authors use the programming language Scheme, and interesting foods to illustrate these abstract ideas. The Seasoned Schemer informs the reader about additional dimensions of computing: functions as values, change of state, and exceptional cases.

The Little LISPer has been a popular introduction to LISP for many years. It had appeared in French and Japanese. The Little Schemer and The Seasoned Schemer are worthy successors and will prove equally popular as textbooks for Scheme courses as well as companion texts for any complete introductory course in Computer Science.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - You'll learn a lot more than Scheme.......2007-02-26

I am amazed that an introductory book can teach so much. Scheme is so simple, and this method so effective, that by the end of the book you'll have written a proof of the halting problem, derived the Y Combinator, written a Scheme interpreter and be very comfortable with recursion.

To get there, be prepared to do a lot of excercises in your scheme interpreter. Occaisionally, the questions the dialog style are asking aren't the ones you'll have in mind, in which case a little re-reading is in order. The payoff is well worth it though.

4 out of 5 stars Not a reference manual.......2007-02-07

If you are looking for a language reference, you will be sorely disappointed with this book. It's not designed for quickly looking things up. However, if you are looking to an easy, painless introduction to functional programming, this is the book you want. The exercises are simple, build carefully on one another, and the theory behind them is explained at every step of the book. The presentation is charming, from the peanut butter and jelly theme throughout the examples, to the cavorting elephants on the cover. Pick this book up as a supplement to the mandatory, dry, exhaustive language reference, and work through the examples a few at a time. You'll find yourself understanding the language much better.

5 out of 5 stars Great programming book.......2007-01-04

This book will change the way you think about programming and recursion.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Primer, But Not a Reference.......2006-11-15

The Little Schemer is most emphatically not a reference to the Scheme programming language. Nor will it tell you how to get your Scheme Interpreter to print "Hello World!" These are not flaws, though, any more than my TV's inability to cook a TV dinner is a flaw.

The Little Schemer is written to teach you how to think about programming using recursion, which is the natural way to program in Scheme. And at this, it succeeds brilliantly. It starts with the simplest ideas and then proceeds inductively from those elements to develop programming patterns.

Few people find it natural to think in terms of recursive functions. Scheme's programming style may seem even more foreign to those who have done all their coding in procedural languages, such as C, Java, and Visual Basic. The value of The Little Schemer is in the way it transforms the unnatural into the natural.

4 out of 5 stars Nice approach to learn Scheme.......2006-11-06

This is an easy intro to Scheme. I like the simple, repeated examples. It could, however, benefit from a little discussion at the beginning of each chapter.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration.......2007-06-14

This book has a lot of ideas and inspiration about colours. Some schemes are daring, but all of them seems an professional work!

3 out of 5 stars Colour combination chart in spiral book form with hard cover.......2007-06-08

A book that is more for carrying around when colour schemes are being planned. It is small in size. Each page has an imaginative and inspiring title that distinguishes one combination of colour from another. It does not have many interior design photographic examples of the combinations suggested. It is like a palette with suggestions.

    4 out of 5 stars just one little thing I didn't like.......2007-04-13

The color combinations are nice, but the photographs do not represent
all different kinds of design styles, only one, simple and sparse. Most people don't live in homes that are so plain, so it is impossible to know how these colors would look in more expensive "designer" spaces.

    5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!.......2007-03-01

I love color and I was always working to try to find color schemes for rooms in our home and often ended up finding that I'd picked something that felt lifeless or didn't fit us. This book is just exactly what I was looking for! I stumbled across it in the library when we moved to our most recent residence. What a find! The authors include dozens of potential palettes along with information about the mood, potential executions and inspirations behind the choices they offer. This is now my secret decorating weapon. For the first time, I feel like a grown-up when I set up a home!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool.......2007-02-08

The Color Scheme Bible has helped my wife and me tremendously with developing the color schemes for our new home in Mexico. It offers the ability to side-by-side colors and visualize accent color combinations that would not seem obvious.

Helps envision the various moods/emotions of the rooms.

We like the book so well that we gave our Mexican builder a copy and purchased a second copy for our use. We can now communicate across the distance.

    Highly recommended.

<B>The “top journalist in America and the funniest” (Randi Rhodes, Air America), takes his previous New York Times bestseller a step further with hot undercover dispatches— hanging out the dirty underpants of the “armed and dangerous clowns that rule us.”</B> <BR><BR> A White House spokesman said, “We hate that sonovabitch.” They're not alone: From corporate suites to Osama's cave, they fear what Britain's Guardian calls “investigations up there with Woodward and Bernstein—and a lot funnier.” But Greg Palast's fanatic following (nearly two million readers of his Web column) has made him “a cult fave among progressives” (Village Voice) who can't wait for his next release.

Palast's old-style gum-shoe detective work to dig out the info on the War on Terror, greed- dripping schemes to seize little nations with lots of oil, the hidden program to steal the 2008 election, and the media biases that keep it unreported are the meat and bones of this BBC television reporter's new book. Armed Madhouse is illustrated with dozens of documents marked “secret” and “confidential” that have walked out of file cabinets and fallen into Palast's hands.

You won't find Palast in The New York Times (except its bestseller list), but you will read his reports on the hottest Web sites worldwide, hear him regularly on Air America and the Pacifica radio networks, and see his stories reappearing as the basis for Eminem's hit video “Mosh,” Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, and sampled by a dozen of today's top platinum rock artists. Greg Palast got Tim Grifths fired as the US Attorney for Arkansas. Now how did that happen? That a guy who reports for The Guardian, a British Newspaper manages to out scoop the US media?

Want to know how the fix for 2008 is already in? Caging.. a process by which minority voters are first purged, then scrubbed, ID's, provisional balloted, then denied their right to vote. And why? Because they are likely to vote Democratic so off they go. And it's not just Republicans who are doing the scrubbing.. Welcome to the high tech version of Jim Crow laws. Now admittedly denying the right to vote to the lower class has been going on since the Jamestown settlement where if you weren't white, land holding, male, and presbyterian you didn't vote either. So there really is nothing new under the sun but in this case it's time to send some of these felons off to jail.

Read it and weep, and then go out and vote.

The author has great investigative instincts and ability. Why his findings have not come out in the mainstream press in a timely fashion is the mystery that cries for explanation.

The United States is in debt to this author!

    5 out of 5 stars PAY ATTENTION!.......2007-06-17

I had put off reading "Armed Madhouse" because I knew enough of this stuff, but I couldn't bury my head in the sand forever, and I have just read it.

Greg Palast is wonderful at ferreting out information and stunningly good as an investigative reporter. And, of course, the more he learns, the more whistle blowers choose him to make public their concerns. Despite the fact he is a reporter, Mr Palast doesn't write like a reporter. He makes snide comments as well as using more adjectives and adverbs than a proper sort of reporter would. I hope this entertaining and passionate style of writing causes people who "aren't interested in politics" to read the book and sit up and take notice of what is going on around them. If you do nothing else, stand in the bookstore and read the three and a half page chapter entitled "The End: The house I live in." It made me cry.

Even I, who tries to keep up with all the real news (rather than the sanitized TV stuff) learned some things in this book. For instance, did you know that William Rehnquist once headed a harassment team called "Operation Eagle Eye" in the 1960's designed to discourage Hispanic voters in Arizona from voting? No wonder, once he was on the Supreme Court he thought it was all right to appoint a president in the 2000 election. And no wonder, despite strong evidence that thousands of votes in Ohio and New Mexico weren't counted in the 2004 election, Democrats figured taking it to court wouldn't help.

Greg Palast also explains exactly how oil influenced the US decision to go to war against Iraq. Here's a clue: it wasn't what we thought.

The last chapter tells us how to avoid the theft of the next election (and what is planned to steal it). However, as long as 59 million Americans are willing to stand four square against the Constitution (and are even surprised and disapproving of what it says), it is probably too late to save the US.

4 out of 5 stars Armed (and Dangerous) Madhouse.......2007-06-13

Be ready to have your eyes open. He was preaching to the choir as I read about the trashing of the constitution by the Bush administration but it was the inside information about the oil industry that raised my cackles.

Written in a very conversational style that I enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2007-06-11

Excellent for anyone that wants to be able to tell the facts to the neocons that are in denial.

    Book Description

The special feature of the book is the in depth treatment of both the electro-optic effects and the addressing schemes of liquid crystal displays elucidating their interdependence. After basic explanations readily understandable for students and stimulating for engineers, physicists and chemists, the reader is gradually led to the latest developments such as vertically aligned and mixed mode TN-displays, compensation foils, multiple line and low power addressing, transistor driven LCOS-devices with DRAM and SRAM addressing and TFT-addressing of transmissive displays with a 92% aperture ratio.
The results are analytically derived and not merely stated to enhance insight and the capability to tailor displays to individual needs or to perform novel designs. Towards this aim the propagation of light with the help of Jones vectors, four different characterizations of the state of polarization and the operation as well as the passive and active matrix addressing of all LCDs, like nematic, polymer dispersed, guest host and bistable devices is explained. Besides the mainstream twisted and supertwisted nematic LCDs attention is drawn to bistable ferroelectric, chiral nematic and modified nematic LCDs as they are most promising for future portable low power systems.
Tables on display formats and units for the measurement of displays finally render the book suitable as a reference for experts working in the field and as a textbook for universities or display courses.
The forefront of research is reached by the treatment of plastic substrates, the replacement of vacuum processes by less expensive printing and low temperature fabrication of a-Si- and poly-Si-TFTS.

I DO NOT AGREE that Dr. Leuder's book is "difficult to read. Style and composition are poor." The reviewer does not consider that English is a second language for Dr. Leuder.

I have read many of Dr. Leuder's English language papers, and I believe him to be one of the most innovative pioneers of lcds, and recently of flexible lcds. He has trained a small army of P.H.D.'s about flexible display technologies, and his papers were lauded by dozens and dozens of commercial companies at the annual SID shows.

I very carefully read this entire book, and I found it to be a good primer for the bachelor level student, and full of lots of innovative ideas for the experienced lcd practitioners.

I especially enjoyed his chapters about flexible display technologies, and reread them over and over again.

I strongly encourage you to consider this book.

5 out of 5 stars Such an inspiration.......2007-06-23

This book is such an inspiration. I find that I refer to it constantly. The thing that makes this book unique from all other color theory books is the "color recipes". The author takes several projects, all in the same color scheme and then analyzes the percentages of each color represented in the finished piece. She does this for more than 150 pieces of beadwork in several dozen color schemes. This has opened up a new, wonderful, world to me. It's not just the colors, it's also the proportions of those colors! My only wish is that there were instructions for all of these gorgeous pieces.

    5 out of 5 stars Super Book.......2007-05-31

I have been looking for something which would help me in designing with beads, and now I have it. It was the easiest book I have found to have the use of colors, to be pleasing to the eye. When I get into theory, I don't under stand it, or at least I guess I don't want to take the time to understand. Now I get it. Easier then ever. Great Book.

    5 out of 5 stars Totally unique.......2007-03-31

This is the most unique color book I have ever seen. And I have almost all of them...from Itten through Deeb, and I love them all. I am obsessed with color, and find that it is the first thing I consider in any of the art that I make. What Sandra has done for beaders is to go far beyond the basic info (which *is* included)and discuss moods and themes. I already know that I'm a sucker for an analogous scheme...but she shows me how to use what I already love to create pieces that evoke a mood.

    I love this book.

Disclaimer ~ I have two pieces included in the book, and I couldn't be prouder!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of inspiration, pleasantly surprised.......2007-02-15

When I received the book, the cover is different than pictured. If I had seen only the new cover and nothing else, I might have hesitated about buying the book. I already have the 'Beader's Guide to Color' by Margie Deeb which focuses more on seed beads (including citing the Delica bead number). I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is organized differently. It has a good basic introduction (Chapter 1) to color theory, explaining the different color wheels, tonal values, tints, intensity, shades, finishes, etc. I expected this and Sandra Wallace did a good job of it, with lots of color photos of beads (not just flat color swatch) to illustrate. There are over 150 absolutely GORGEOUS beaded items in various color schemes/groupings in Chapter 2. Most of these items are done with seed beads. There are a handful of stringed designs with larger glass beads. I really like how it gives the proportion of colors using 20 color bars with each representing 5%. I can't wait to try some of these out. I was surprised to find that it has 10 projects at the end of the book with 6 different color schemes for each. Awesome. These are not for beginners expect for maybe 4 projects. You are expected to know how to do herringbone stitch, brick stitch, right angle weave, etc. There is NO general how to sections on the various beading technique but the instructions for the projects are well written and have good diagrams for those experienced with the stitch technique. I consider this book to be a MUST HAVE in all beaders' library. Although the book leaned heavier towards seedbead weavers, the color schemes in the book can definitely be used for larger glass beads as well as beads from organic material.

Friedman and Felleisen's The Seasoned Schemer picks up where their book, The Little Schemer, left off and focuses on the myriad uses of functions in Scheme. Using the same dialogue format as The Little Schemer, the authors demonstrate how Scheme's flexible facilities for handling functions give the program so much variety and power. Along the way, the authors also present a variety of other more sophisticated language constructs.

    Book Description

<B>drawings by Duane Bibby</B> foreword and afterword by Guy L. Steele Jr.

5 out of 5 stars introduces the rest of scheme (almost).......2006-09-04

The Seasoned Schemer continues where the Little Schemer left off introducing local variables via let and it's variations including letrec. Set!, the syntax for changing a variables value is introduced. Continuations, as used for escaping from an computation and for going back to previous position in code are also introduced. There are less references to the accomplishments of famous computer scientists in this book than in the Little Schemer which I found to be disappointing. However, I greatly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone wanting to increase their understanding of the Scheme programming language. Although scheme's vector data type is not introduced, I think you will have enough of an understanding of Scheme after reading this book to make substantial programs.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on thinking recursively.......2000-07-27

This book is the second half of "The Little Schemer". It expects you to have mastered the previous volume, so it starts fast and picks up speed from there.

It covers a lot of ground in a slim volume (just as in "The Little Schemer"). This book introduces the concepts of closures and call-with-current-continuation (among other things).

As with "The Little Schemer", this book's strength is in its socratic instruction method. Lessons are written and illustrated as conversations between the reader and the instructor (in question/answer format). While this sounds strange, it is actually surprisingly effective as a means of learning the material. It might seem somewhat like rote instruction, but it can often frame foreign concepts in a rememberable fashion.

Neither of these books require much in the way of background or familiarity with the material. They were created as a means of teaching non-programmers to program in Scheme. However, I think they hold value for trained programmers as well.

4 out of 5 stars solid material - interesting format.......1998-02-24

Dialogue style makes this book fun to read. Leitmotif of food examples keeps the tone light and the reader hungry. Have the number for pizza handy before you sit down for this book.

Focuses on the use of functions in scheme, in an easy reading, enjoyable style. My only minor criticism is that the typographic conventions make the code hard to read. I realize that they serve a purpose, but it made the typesetting ugly.

An admirable work, suitable for reading even if you already "know it all", just because of its approach to teaching.

    5 out of 5 stars A good reference book.......2007-06-08

Learning from experience takes too long. It is better to read this book so that designing with the right combination of colours is more cost effective and less hassle.

4 out of 5 stars Good color combos.......2007-03-09

This is a good book on color for your home.
The first part of the book covers the color wheel and basic color theory. It's nothing new, and not really detailed, but a nice overview.
Then each chapter focuses on a different main color. The pictures of the rooms are beautiful - very much like you might see in Better Homes, Country Home, or Country Living magazines - and usually show a good use of the color scheme they are portraying. It is not too trendy, most seem like you could live with them for many years.
I would have liked to see deeper and brighter oranges though. Leaned heavily toward apricots and corals.
    Also needed more warm-toned browns.
The end of the book has all the color schemes used in the book, for matching to paint chips or fabric samples. Also a nice way to match color schemes if you were planning a whole house, since the main color in a plan turns up as an accent in other plans.
This book could also be useful to crafters looking for new colors to try together. I'm thinking of using some of the color schemes in knitting.

    4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-01-09

This is a great reference book. Having just built our home, I needed some professional help in the coordination of the colours I wished to use and it gave me some fresh great ideas I would never have thought of on my own. Highly recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Helpful & Inspiring!.......2007-01-05

This book offers some rare inspiration that I've been hard pressed to find elsewhere. What it does especially well is lay out multitudes of color combinations that one would not normally think of as harmonious...then provides great photographs of actual rooms tastefully done in these purposed color schemes.

I'm a Garden Designer by profession ...not an interior decorator...but there are very few color guide books relating to plants thathave anything new to say. I often rely on the tools of Interior Designers & their books for help. I've bought several books on the this topic & this book is by far one of the best....& it's not only helpful indoors but has been useful in giving me ideas for outdoor groupings of furniture & planters, house colors etc too....

I highly recommend it & suggest anyone looking for new & innovative color schemes check into getting this book!

5 out of 5 stars Unique and helpful.......2006-05-18

Excellent book to provide inspiration and ideas for selecting and mixing color schemes. Information is divided by color families. Each room has a sample color palette. In addition there is a complete section at the back of all the color palettes used so you can bring them with you when you select your paint. I refer to this book often.

    5. How to Design Programs: An Introduction to Programming and Computing

    ASIN: 0262541483

    Book Description

This thoroughly updated edition of The Scheme Programming Language provides an introduction to Scheme and a definitive reference for standard Scheme, presented in a clear and concise manner. Written for professionals and students with some prior programming experience, it begins by leading the programmer gently through the basics of Scheme and continues with an introduction to some of the more advanced features of the language. Many exercises are presented to help reinforce the lessons learned, and answers to the exercises are given in a new appendix. Most of the remaining chapters are dedicated to the reference material, which describes in detail the standard features of Scheme included in the Revised Report on Scheme and the ANSI/IEEE standard for Scheme.

Numerous examples are presented throughout the introductory and reference portions of the text, and a unique set of extended example programs and applications, with additional exercises, are presented in the final chapter. Reinforcing the book's utility as a reference text are appendixes that present the formal syntax of Scheme, a summary of standard forms and procedures, and a bibliography of Scheme resources. The Scheme Programming Language stands alone as an introduction to and essential reference for Scheme programmers. It is also useful as a supplementary text for any course that uses Scheme.

The Scheme Programming Language is illustrated by artist Jean-Pierre Hebert, who writes Scheme programs to extend his ability to create sophisticated works of digital art.

    5 out of 5 stars GOOD STUFF.......2006-01-15

Good book. To the point. Doesn't waste time with fluffy words. Excellent. I learned Scheme in a few days from this book. Scheme is like C on steroids. I like C, I hate C++ and Java. Calculus is entirely about functions, not objects. And I don't see people saying oh, Calculus is weak because it isn't object oriented. BLECH. Teach me to fish, don't give me one.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" and a "must read". Excellent book........2005-06-10

As I said in a past review to the second edition, this book is wonderful. This book has convinced me to migrate from Common Lisp to Scheme. This is a serious book for the one that really wants to learn about Scheme and require careful study and a strong motivation. Please note: if you are really interested to learn Scheme, then this book is for you; if you are not really interested and/or you like to joke, this book is absolutely not for you. The book is accurate, complete, well written and cover all you need about the modern Scheme. I use Scheme for personal study about bioinformatics. Thanks to the Autor.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference.......2005-05-09

This is an excellent book on Scheme, that covers R5RS thoroughly. The first part is a succint tutorial, most useful for those of us with no previous knowledge of functional programming: manipulation of lists, continuations, macros, etc. It is very clear, with plenty of solved examples and exercises. The second part is a thorough reference on every keyword and function of R5RS. There is nary a reference to particular implementations of Scheme, so it should be useful to everybody.

This is a dry book. I say this to its advantage. There are no extraneous comments nor attempts at being funny, yet the text is perfectly readable.

Typography is the truly standard TeX fare, and it looks very nice and 'functional'. Format is a bit wide, which helps the book to stay open where one leaves it open.

Many useful quasi-standard features outside R5RS (ie the SRFI's) are not covered. But for learning and practicing the language itself, I doubt there is a better choice. On the other hand, the full text of the book (and a handful of errata) is available online, should you not believe me (...)

    Book Description

Sexy. Diva. Boy-crazy. Shopper. The image of girls and girlhood that is being packaged and sold to your daughter isnt pretty in pink. Its stereotypical, demeaning, limiting, and alarming. Girl Power has been co-opted by marketers of music, fashion, books, and television to mean the power to shop and attract boys. Girls are besieged by images in the media that encourage accessorizing over academics; sex appeal over sports; fashion over friends. Packaging Girlhood exposes these stereotypes and the very limited choices presented of who girls are and what they can be. Lamb and Brown give parents guidance on how to talk with their daughters about these negative images and aid them with tools on how to help girls make more positive choices about the way they are in the world. In the tradition of books like Reviving Ophelia, Odd Girl Out, and Queen Bees and Wannabees that examine the world of girls, this book promises to not only spark debate but help parents to empower their daughters.

5 out of 5 stars Packaging Girlhood Enlightened Me.......2007-05-17

My copy of Packaging Girlhood has more yellow highlights than all of my college textbooks -- combined! I found each chapter extremely relevent, eye opening and provocative. Before reading the book, a five-year old that dressed up like Hannah Montana wouldn't have phased me in the least. Thanks to this book, I am much more attuned to the effects media and pop culture have on extremely young girls. I can't watch a movie, read a magazine or listen to a song the same way again without being conscious of messages directed to females. I am glad I got my hands on this book early on, so I have been able to help my young daughter be more critical of what is being "fed" to her through various media outlets before her pre-teen years. Not only that, I have been on crusade to educate others about demeaning stereotypes and downright bad messages that are being conveyed to young girls. I have encountered many who say "It's out of my hands...My daugher's going to see what they're going to see." But that's just not true. There are many things a parent can do that are spelled out in the book. Instead of turning off "That's So Raven" or cancelling that subscription to Seventeen magazine, just be aware of the content your daughter is being exposed to whenever you can. Then sit down with her and discuss it. As the book clearly states, "you can't shut off the world" but you can help your daughter be more critical of what she is seeing and hearing. I was a bit skeptical about being able to do this, but, to my amazement, my 7-year old daughter has developed some of the critical thinking necessary to recognize negative female sterotypes and messages. In a culture that encourages little girls to attract boys, go shopping and wear "French Maid" Halloween costumes, the book is a valuable resource that I refer to often. But I must warn anyone about to read it: Once you do, you'll never go back. Thank you Sharon Lamb and Lyn Mikel Brown!

5 out of 5 stars The Commercial Is Now Ended, Reality Has Begun - Selling Girlhood in the Marketplace (and What Parents Can Do About It).......2007-05-11

To point out, as "Morgan" does, the five errors that exist in a 300 page book that aims to address the constantly-mutating monster called popular culture is disingenuous at best. Granted the authors, had they not also been multi-dimensional women conducting serious lives of service, could have paid an army of fact-checkers to purge these errors, but I doubt that the Morgans of the world would have been willing to face the truth. The fact remains that they have done the walking so we can do the talking and we should be honoring their work, not excoriating them for doing the heavy lifting for us!

If you are unconvinced that all is not right in the emerald city, flip the pages of any parenting magazine and you will find girls dressed in finery that locks them out of the games just as completely as if their little American feet were being bound into lotus shapes. Today, every activity, from ballet to basketball, is re-interpreted to encourage girls to become pod-people who accessorize well, mind their sex appeal and snag boyfriends.

As a mother of three daughters, I'm up-to-date on my shots with regard to pop culture. But dealing with the hydra-headed charge of negative consumerism aimed at girls requires special ordnance. Packaging Girlhood gives me the tools. Brown and Lamb, both mothers, educators and authors, pack a powerful punch when it comes to expertise on the subject of girls. A renowned expert on the status of girls in America, Brown's credits include Girlfighting, and Meeting at the Crossroads: Women's Psychology and Girls' Development (co-authored with Carol Gilligan) and Lamb's, The Secret Lives of Girls, What Good Girls Really Do - Sex, Aggression and their Guilt.

Packaging Girls is replete with examples of girls being bombarded with the message that they should live their lives on the sidelines, preferably as sex symbols in fierce competition with each other for the favor of boys. At Halloween, boys are supermen while girls titter as pink fairies, sexy devils or fluffy animals; girls' bicycles range from "sweetie" to "glitter express" while the boys "thrust," forward on "barebones" and "spitfire."
Girls in the movies (with long eyelashes and big - often naked - lungs), routinely need rescuing, and never by their girl friends or mothers. The one inner-beauty heroine allowed us by DreamWorks, Princess Fiona in Shrek, is erased from all the post-movie commercial fare: packages of M&Ms, Burgher King, Go-Gurt, and even the USPS stamps!

From magazines that channel a girl's self-exploration into questions about body shape and hair color, to books about rich, bulimic girls who have sexual escapades without consequence in the dressing rooms of expensive department stores, there are two types of pre-packaged girls: "pink and girly" or "red and feisty," both defined by their appeal to boys/men.
With girls being encouraged from dawn to dusk to choose a shallow lifestyle over the conduct of independent life, we should be glad that Lamb and Brown stepped up to the plate to bat on their behalf.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent "Handbook" for Anyone Responsible for Raising Kids Today.......2007-05-07

This is an excellent and compelling read. Anyone raising a young child in these times should read this; it really does act as a 'handbook' to sorting out marketing schemes that plague our childrens' world. While the subject matter is intense, there are positive messages throughout that provide tools to handle the influx of media in our lives. Wonderful!

    3 out of 5 stars Pervasive errors.......2007-05-04

I completely agree with the above review by Morgan. This book has useful information but, in the long run, I can't help but think you might actually be harmed by it when you try to talk to your daughter about Britney Spears's hit song, "Hit Me Baby One More Time." Your daughter will inevitably roll her eyes about how pathologically uncool you are and say, "MOM, it's just called '...Baby One More Time.'" That is just one of the many, many errors (many of which are outlined by Morgan, although that is not even all of them) that are scattered throughout the book. You would think that, after all that research, they would at least bother to find out the real storylines of the books they are disparaging, among them the American Girl series, on which I grew up. (By the way--the three original American Girls were white, but the fourth, Addy, was black. They get this wrong, too.)

It is difficult for me to see through the errors in books like this, and it was all the more glaring in this book because it is trying to help you bridge the cultural divide between you and your daughter. I don't have any children yet--when I do, I may use some of the suggestions put forth in the book, but I will make sure I know the "real" facts before I open my mouth. I'm sure not one of us readers is so far removed from the preteen/teenage years that we forget how quickly a misquoted song lyric or an incomplete understanding of a popular book, movie, or television show can ruin all credibility a parent has.

In short: while the book has good ideas and great suggestions, it falls short when it comes to the details, especially when those details are used to support or back up some of the claims. Do your own fact-checking, since, apparently, the editors of this book didn't.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading.......2007-04-15

I read this book when it was immediately available and ended up making photocopies of about a good chapter and sent said sections to several friends. I also encouraged these friends to read this book.

The most useful part of the book were the talking points with your daughter about movies, items, commercials, etc.

Overall, the book will be incredibly useful to parents, teachers, and others who work with youth. I think the book is insightful and it's written for a lay audience.

I'd probably suggest that you check it out from the library (like I did) and then read it to decide if you think you should own a copy.

It's a great book, but not as strong as _Odd Girl Out_, for instance. And, I made sure to buy that book.
