4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-06-11

I am reading this book and I think that it is an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Choices Are Clear.......2007-06-04

With reference to some other reviews about the two books, here are my two cents: If you are a beginner or not a Java expert, get Sanghera's book (SCJP for J2SE 5), at least to start with. If you are an expert, Sierra's book is fine. But this book is too difficult for the beginners. The authors of this book (Sierra and Bates) are very honest about it and disclose this fact in the Introduction of the book that this book is not for the beginners.
That said both books are execellent.

Book Description

You're not alone.

At any given moment, somewhere in the world someone struggles with the same software design problems you have. You know you don't want to reinvent the wheel (or worse, a flat tire), so you look to Design Patterns--the lessons learned by those who've faced the same problems. With Design Patterns, you get to take advantage of the best practices and experience of others, so that you can spend your time on...something else. Something more challenging. Something more complex. Something more fun.

You want to learn about the patterns that matter--why to use them, when to use them, how to use them (and when NOT to use them). But you don't just want to see how patterns look in a book, you want to know how they look "in the wild". In their native environment. In other words, in real world applications. You also want to learn how patterns are used in the Java API, and how to exploit Java's built-in pattern support in your own code.

You want to learn the real OO design principles and why everything your boss told you about inheritance might be wrong (and what to do instead). You want to learn how those principles will help the next time you're up a creek without a design pattern.

Most importantly, you want to learn the "secret language" of Design Patterns so that you can hold your own with your co-worker (and impress cocktail party guests) when he casually mentions his stunningly clever use of Command, Facade, Proxy, and Factory in between sips of a martini. You'll easily counter with your deep understanding of why Singleton isn't as simple as it sounds, how the Factory is so often misunderstood, or on the real relationship between Decorator, Facade and Adapter.

With Head First Design Patterns, you'll avoid the embarrassment of thinking Decorator is something from the "Trading Spaces" show. Best of all, in a way that won't put you to sleep! We think your time is too important (and too short) to spend it struggling with academic texts.

If you've read a Head First book, you know what to expect--a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works. Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science, and learning theory, Head First Design Patterns will load patterns into your brain in a way that sticks. In a way that lets you put them to work immediately. In a way that makes you better at solving software design problems, and better at speaking the language of patterns with others on your team.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-06-24

This book is an extremely clear and readable introduction to design patterns. It has serious contents and is not too goofy so that it becomes distracting.

While the sample code is in Java (and will help you gain more appreciation for the language) the concepts will apply to other languages equally well.

Definetly one of the best and most approachable books on this subject. Highly recommended if you want to learn about design patterns.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2007-06-12

If you haven't read a pattern book before, this is the one to start with. It not only teaches patterns in an approachable manner, it also teaches sound object oriented design. It's so good I've bought one for every person on my team. Each time we hire a new developer we hand them a copy of Head First Design Patterns. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-06-12

I had never read a Head First book but everybody talks about them!
Having read the SCJP book by Katty Sierra and Bert Bates, I decided to try the Design Pattern book (authored by the Freeman couple, with help from Katty & Bert).

My impression... wow!
VERY clearly explained, lot of examples, lot of graphics! After 8 hours of work I find myself arriving at home and just reading chapter or two to relax! What amazes me is that for each chapter they present a requirement and create a first solution that is VERY similar to what we, in our fast spaced, timeline based IT world are used to do: something that will be done quickly and will solve the business needs... for now.
But then they show what can happen when CHANGES are requested to our initial solution (software developers KNOW what we are talking about here!) so that the reader truly apreciates how the initial quick-solution is totally un-scalable and lot of code rewriting must be dedicated over again to implement the changes.
A pattern is then introduced, showing how, by dedicating just a little bit of effort in the early stages of development, can save hours and hours of work in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-06-09

If you plan on ever going into a programming/computer science related field, this book is a must. Great reference book, and easy to understand and retain information. This book will help a programmer transform into a software engineer. I never understood the full power of abstract / interface classes until reading this book (one of my college professors reccommended it for his software engineering 2 class). In my four years of college, the best book I purchased.... by far.

5 out of 5 stars Fun way to learn about design patterns.......2007-06-08

This is a fun way to learn a serious topic. I can't personally imagine a more entertaining method to write a book about a "mundane" topic such as design patterns. The book promises that the concepts and topics would 'reside' in the reader's brain long after the reader is done reading the book. That I found to be a true statement for myself. I am sure you will find that true too.

Remember that the authors expect you to known the fundamental concepts about OO design (UML) and Java (C# knowledge might be supplementary). But of course, you wouldn't be reading a book about design patterns without knowing the concepts before hand. Would you?

Larry Wall wrote Perl and he wrote Programming Perl. Better yet, he writes amusingly and well--all of which comes across in this latest edition of the definitive guide to the language.

Like Topsy, Perl just grew, and as a result the need for a third edition came about. It's now over 1,000 pages, which it needs to be, as it performs several different duties. First, it's an introduction to the Perl language for those who are new to programming; also, it's a guide for those who are coming from other languages; and, finally, it's a Perl language reference.

Among Larry Wall's other pursuits is being a linguist, and it's perhaps for this reason that Perl is a peculiarly flexible language with many routes to achieving the same ends, as the authors ably demonstrate. It's also extensible in several ways, designed to work with many other languages. Also, as it's largely interpreted, programs written in Perl tend to run unmodified on a variety of platforms--although platform-specific Perl modules and programming practices are also discussed.

A major strength of Programming Perl is the way subject areas are approached from several directions. This constant shift of viewpoint eliminates blind spots in the reader's understanding and provides a pleasing echo of the way Perl itself can take many routes from here to there.

Because the Perl community is both knowledgeable and active, the language covers much more ground here than in the previous edition. Even if you have both previous editions, you'll want this latest version--if only for the new jokes. --Steve Patient, amazon.co.uk

Book Description

Perl is a powerful programming language that has grown in popularity since it first appeared in 1988. The first edition of this book, Programming Perl, hit the shelves in 1990, and was quickly adopted as the undisputed bible of the language. Since then, Perl has grown with the times, and so has this book. Programming Perl is not just a book about Perl. It is also a unique introduction to the language and its culture, as one might expect only from its authors. Larry Wall is the inventor of Perl, and provides a unique perspective on the evolution of Perl and its future direction. Tom Christiansen was one of the first champions of the language, and lives and breathes the complexities of Perl internals as few other mortals do. Jon Orwant is the editor of The Perl Journal, which has brought together the Perl community as a common forum for new developments in Perl. Any Perl book can show the syntax of Perl's functions, but only this one is a comprehensive guide to all the nooks and crannies of the language. Any Perl book can explain typeglobs, pseudohashes, and closures, but only this one shows how they really work. Any Perl book can say that my is faster than local, but only this one explains why. Any Perl book can have a title, but only this book is affectionately known by all Perl programmers as "The Camel." This third edition of Programming Perl has been expanded to cover version 5.6 of this maturing language. New topics include threading, the compiler, Unicode, and other new features that have been added since the previous edition.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It really isn't that good.......2007-05-14

The book is written by the creators of Perl, but the truth is that the book is not nearly as good as it's cracked up to be. It suffers from the "fish describing water" syndrome, where the authors find it hard to know what to talk about and what not to talk about.

The book definitely is useful, but it's not as useful as a book written by more skillful technical writers would have been. It's very "ivory towers" and it badly needs more simple example scripts rather than "head in the clouds" discussions.

Unfortunately a lot of people who want to be "macho" about computers will say that this book is much easier to understand and useable than it really is - they'd probably tell you about how wonderful the emperor's new clothes are too.

It's not a bad book, and it's definitely useful, but I'd recommend borrowing a copy of this book to have a good look at it before buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Good book to have.......2007-02-20

I haven't actually used this book in some time, but never got the last copy back from the person who borrowed it off my bookshelf. When it did see use, it was mostly to quickly look up things in the back.

5 out of 5 stars Larry Wall is a genius........2006-11-17

Larry Wall (the father of Perl) is a genius. This book is essential for anyone who loves PERL. You might also want to consider "PERL: Essential Programs for Your Survival at Work" by Larry L. Smith.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Perl Book.......2006-08-23

This book is _the_ book to get when you want to get serious about Perl.
If you want to simply get to know Perl and write a few scripts, get "Learning Perl" and that'll teach you what you need to know, plus a few interesting tips here and there that you wouldn't catch yourself.
When you want to actually program in Perl and do the serious work, it's worth it to have access to this book. All the idiosyncrasies are given and you will develop a very indepth understanding of Perl... and once you have that, you can get a huge load done with Perl.

3 out of 5 stars Not my style of learning.......2006-07-30

The book is well edited and has obviously evloved since its first edition to meet the needs of its readers, based on their feedback.

Unfortunately, it teaches you things inside out (and to be fair, the authors do actually tell you this about two chapters in).

They briefly mention/cite concepts in the early chapters which they then don't delve into until later chapters (e.g. they discuss symbol references early on, in regard to operators available in the language, without any introduction as to what a symbol reference is -- and I was left pretty confused sat 30k feet in the sky. I had to hop around the book to find out what was going on).

I am someone that likes to know what's going on every step of the way, where plausible, but I find it very difficult not to stop when I encounter a situation like this and hit Google to work out what they're referring to.

If you like a more methodical approach to learning a new language, try Learning Perl by Schwart et al.

Having said that, everything they do decide to drill down into is well described and becomes absorbed into your memory a lot quicker than most other texts.

-- Brendan Eich, creator of JavaScript</p>

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2007-05-25

This book is an absolutely excellent reference for what Douglas Crockford rightfully calls "the world's most misunderstood language". It contains useful examples with plenty of source, in-depth and accessible explanations, and great coverage of Javascript's core features.

Unless you are developing a javascript framework like ExtJS, YUI, JQuery, or something equally complex, it seems most likely that you will be using this book as a reference. There is no better reference that I've seen, so you can't go wrong there.

If you are in fact writing a framework like one of the ones mentioned above, this book is an indispensable resource. It contains excellent examples of how to write an extensible object-oriented framework that is not only powerful, but easily extended and maintained.

If you are just looking for a quick introduction to the javascript language, this may not be the book for you. If your current job position requires an in-depth knowledge of javascript, you cannot go wrong buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Definitive But..........2007-05-18

The information in the book is absolutely solid, but WOW is the information mundanefully unappealing. There was ZERO thought into keeping the reader interested with content layout, bordering, graphic design, illustration, examples, etc. It is a good resource to have handy. I hate to be the superficial simpleton in the bunch but I'm rather BIG on ascetically appealing text... (it helps with my acute A.D.D. ... j/k ;) this is not that. It's like reading the paper version (vs. online version) of the wall street journal... dampened by the rain and chewed up by the neighbors chihuahua. For those like me try, 1. "JavaScript in easy steps" 2."JavaScript for the world wide web" and 3."Pro JavaScript Techniques"... in that order.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have resource for the serious web developer.......2007-04-11

Comprehensive reference, not overly technical yet not wanting for detail. I've checked out numerous books from numerous local libraries and even bought some only to sell or give them away after a few weeks. After studying this book i can say this is a resource i will wear out.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but too informal.......2007-04-10

A good overview of JavaScript and an in depth coverage of libraries, 'native functions' etc. Some descriptions are not as formal as I expected, the exact semantics of the language is left to interpretation. For the compiler writers out there, go to the ECMA specification directly!

    5 out of 5 stars Definitive Guide.......2007-04-09

Worthy of its title, this book is very well organized and covers everything you need to know about JavaScript and it does so concisely.

This fifth edition is up-to-date enough to stand very useful for quite some time to come - a wealth of interrelated information all in one place.

This book is a must-have reference for any web developer interested in adding interactivity to their web content.

It has taken four years, but with Head First Java the introductory Java book category has finally come of age. This is an excellent book, far more capable than any of the scores of Java-for-novices books that have come before it. Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates deserve rich kudos--and big sales--for developing this book's new way of teaching the Java programming language, because any reader with even a little bit of discipline will come away with true understanding of how the language works. Perhaps best of all, this is no protracted "Hello, World" introductory guide. Readers get substantial exposure to object-oriented design and implementation, serialization, neatwork programming, threads, and Remote Method Invocation (RMI).

Key to the authors' teaching style are carefully designed graphics. Rather than explain class inheritance (to cite one example) primarily with text, the authors use a series of tree diagrams that clarify the mechanism far more succinctly. The diagrams are carefully annotated with arrows and notes. Also characteristic of the unique teaching strategy is heavy reliance on exercises, in which the reader is asked to complete partial classes, write whole new code segments and do design work. Though there's little discussion of why the exercises' correct answers are what they are, it's clear that the practice work was carefully designed to reinforce the lesson at hand. If you've waited this long to give Java a try, this book is a great choice. --David Wall

<B>Topics covered</B>: The Java programming language for people with no Java experience, and even people with no programming experience at all. Key concepts read like a list of Java features: Object oriented design, variable type and scope, object properties and methods, inheritance and polymorphism, exceptions, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), network connectivity, Java archives (JAR files), and Remote Method Invocation (RMI).

    Book Description

Learning a complex new language is no easy task especially when it s an object-oriented computer programming language like Java. You might think the problem is your brain. It seems to have a mind of its own, a mind that doesn't always want to take in the dry, technical stuff you're forced to study.

The fact is your brain craves novelty. It's constantly searching, scanning, waiting for something unusual to happen. After all, that's the way it was built to help you stay alive. It takes all the routine, ordinary, dull stuff and filters it to the background so it won't interfere with your brain's real work--recording things that matter. How does your brain know what matters? It's like the creators of the Head First approach say, suppose you're out for a hike and a tiger jumps in front of you, what happens in your brain? Neurons fire. Emotions crank up. Chemicals surge.

    That's how your brain knows.

And that's how your brain will learn Java. Head First Java combines puzzles, strong visuals, mysteries, and soul-searching interviews with famous Java objects to engage you in many different ways. It's fast, it's fun, and it's effective. And, despite its playful appearance, Head First Java is serious stuff: a complete introduction to object-oriented programming and Java. You'll learn everything from the fundamentals to advanced topics, including threads, network sockets, and distributed programming with RMI. And the new. second edition focuses on Java 5.0, the latest version of the Java language and development platform. Because Java 5.0 is a major update to the platform, with deep, code-level changes, even more careful study and implementation is required. So learning the Head First way is more important than ever.

If you've read a Head First book, you know what to expect--a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works. If you haven't, you're in for a treat. You'll see why people say it's unlike any other Java book you've ever read.

By exploiting how your brain works, Head First Java compresses the time it takes to learn and retain--complex information. Its unique approach not only shows you what you need to know about Java syntax, it teaches you to think like a Java programmer. If you want to be bored, buy some other book. But if you want to understand Java, this book's for you.

If you already know programming, or you're happy with being given vague hints of what things do rather than an organized explanation, this might a fine text for learning Java. This book throws language features at you, without following any of them up with discussion when or why you might want to use certain features. So if you don't want the book's first programs to include all of: variables, loops, method calls, and boolean values all one one page (with only sporadic re-visitations to the topic), then another text might be better for you.

To its credit, this book does manage to present the material in a way unlike any other, which can appeal to certain learning styles.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-05-31

If you cant learn java from this book you are not fit for IT.

5 out of 5 stars A book that actually teaches Java?!.......2007-05-14

I purchased a few other books on Java and have found this one to be the best by far. Unlike most texts on Java, it actually goes through and teaches the subject rather than just serving as a reference material. Another great feature of this book is that it does not assume you already know C++ like most other Java books I purchased and subsequently put down after reading a few chapters. This is a great book if you are new to object oriented programming and would like to learn Java without having to first learn C++ and/or object oriented programming principles as a prerequisite.

5 out of 5 stars great book on learning java.......2007-05-14

I needed to learn some Java fundamentals for the SCJA exam. I picked up this book, and it taught me what I needed to know for the syntax part, and then some.

This is the best book around for learning Java syntax and the language. Certainly covers more syntax than you need to know for SCJA, but more is better than not enough!

    Great book.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally! A non-baby intro book.......2007-04-07

I've tried three other Java intro books, and they either aren't well-organized or they take such a dim view of the reader's abilities that it's like reading Programming for Pre-schoolers. Absolute Java is well-structured with both breadth & depth: it doesn't ignore programming basics, but covers a much larger scope of material than other books I've tried, while still including detail about intricacies of more sophisticated aspects of the language. Uses lots of good, robust examples. Love it.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-02-23

It took me a couple months of my own time reading this book to prepare myself for a second round back to school. I have not programmed in almost 8 years and it was in C. I have to say that as an introductory programming book, Savitch did a superb job. You cannot get any more clear on the topics of the basics and foundations of the Java language than this. If you're just a passerby that just wants to get yourself started in Java, I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The book was good, and it came very fast.......2007-02-10

The book was recommended by my professor and it is extremely useful and came to me in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2006-03-21

I'm a beginning programmer and found this book immensely helpful. Other titles I sampled included Java Head-on, Big Java, and Ivor Horton's Java, and they just weren't as clear and straightforward as this book. The order of topics is the best I've seen, and the chapter on classes covers everything you need to know to get started.

    Book Description

"Head First Object Oriented Analysis and Design is a refreshing look at subject of OOAD. What sets this book apart is its focus on learning. The authors have made the content of OOAD accessible, usable for the practitioner."

    Ivar Jacobson, Ivar Jacobson Consulting

"I just finished reading HF OOA&D and I loved it! The thing I liked most about this book was its focus on why we do OOA&D-to write great software!"

    Kyle Brown, Distinguished Engineer, IBM</p>

"Hidden behind the funny pictures and crazy fonts is a serious, intelligent, extremely well-crafted presentation of OO Analysis and Design. As I read the book, I felt like I was looking over the shoulder of an expert designer who was explaining to me what issues were important at each step, and why."

Edward Sciore, Associate Professor, Computer Science Department, Boston College</p>

Tired of reading Object Oriented Analysis and Design books that only makes sense after you're an expert? You've heard OOA&D can help you write great software every time-software that makes your boss happy, your customers satisfied and gives you more time to do what makes you happy.</p>

    But how?</p>

Head First Object-Oriented Analysis & Design shows you how to analyze, design, and write serious object-oriented software: software that's easy to reuse, maintain, and extend; software that doesn't hurt your head; software that lets you add new features without breaking the old ones. Inside you will learn how to:</p> <ul>

  • Use OO principles like encapsulation and delegation to build applications that are flexible</li>
  • Apply the Open-Closed Principle (OCP) and the Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) to promote reuse of your code</li>
  • Leverage the power of design patterns to solve your problems more efficiently</li>
  • Use UML, use cases, and diagrams to ensure that all stakeholders are communicating clearly to help you deliver the right software that meets everyone's needs.</li> </ul>

By exploiting how your brain works, Head First Object-Oriented Analysis & Design compresses the time it takes to learn and retain complex information. Expect to have fun, expect to learn, expect to be writing great software consistently by the time you're finished reading this!</p>

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-06-08

I decided to buy this book based on the reputation of the 'head first' series regarding ease of 'consumption'. The main goal was to find new ideas about how to transmit object oriented analysis to newcomers.

Overall this book is very easy to read from cover to cover. The jokes, examples and exercises do force you to think and assimilate the concepts shown.

In the end I had just one 'complaint': I wish the authors could have extended the coverage with more complex scenarios and more day-to-day situations.

3 out of 5 stars Great idea, but quality may be slipping.......2007-05-31

I love the Head First (HF) Series, and as I am neither a programmer or a software person the HF books have proved a great entry into the discipline.

The HF idea works for my learning style, and I think the suitability is independent of age as I am a middle-age male.

It also difficult to know how good the HF books are because the information they present is new, and effectiveness is judged by how much you learn. I have found that after completing the HF OOAD I have been able to go from novice to following with ease the more formal books of Grady Booch (OOAD 2nd Ed) and Graig Larman (applying UML and patterns). I am serious about learning this stuff.

HF OOAD gently takes you through the full OOAD journey in which you are an active participant.

While the HF books seem 'informal and funky' they have a high level of design, are well thought out, are serious, and are produced by TEAMS of gifted and talented people. The quality control is generally good. But, these kind of books need to be well thought out as the style only works when everything fits together (so beware of imitations). Like good teachers, they take your hand, give you clues that are later amplified, and take you to places you never imagined. You miss the characters after you finish each book.

The requirement for talented writers and the demand for more lines of HF style books I think is becoming problem. As I write this review, the HF OOAD book is not fully supported by its website as promised in the book with half the chapters not supported by code. While I got by successfully without this support (and wrote the code myself as you are meant to but I used eclipse which you are not meant to according to HF authors - so I cheated), the later chapters did cover some pretty demanding work from my point of view.

It is because the supporting code is not on the web that I have given this HF OOAD book three stars. I am writing this review so that I can rate it with three stars, and hopefully add pressure for the HF series to get its act together.

5 out of 5 stars Very Thorough Textbook.......2007-06-01

I used this book to begin my studies in Java. I finished all chapters and then bought an SCJP preparation book. I completed the exam with a score of 75% (59% is passing). I constantly use this book for reference. Well layed out and has everything.

4 out of 5 stars Java How to Program 7th edition.......2007-05-26

The text assumes no prior programming experience. The style is clear, if somewhat oversimplified, examples are easy to follow. There are appendices for reference on questions such as operator precedence. Problems at the end of chapters reflect the material presented.
New terms are defined precisely and clearly, and relevant examples are given. CD's with many example programs are included.
The authors, however, have a tendency to repeat themselves, possibly in an attempt to make the material more accessible. Self-evident concepts, such as that pseudocode is not real code are repeated unnecessarily. Also, sections of example Java code are reprinted in full repeatedly with code additions or variations. This repetition and oversimplified approach has resulted in a 1596 page text. Don't drop it on your foot!
Yes, I recommend this text, but you may have to exercise some patience with occasional overly drawn out exposition.

    5 out of 5 stars Java Programming.......2007-05-13

This book is awesome. As with most Computer Science students, I need to focus on problem solving and writing fast and efficient algorithms. When programming, I find myself all too often debugging and searching for syntax errors in my code. This completely distracts from solving the actual problem and causes more time to be wasted. This book has so many code examples and covers so many topics, that it almost eliminates my time wandering through the API documentation and searching google for code. I wish I would have had this book when I first started programming in Java. It would have made the language much easier.

It is not a theory book and never implies that it should be, hence the title "Java How to Program". But if your looking for a Java programming guide/reference, I have never seen better.

    5 out of 5 stars JAVA Book.......2007-03-13

This book has everything my professor was talking about in my online programming class.
I have two books for my class, but didn't even need to read the other one because this book has everything.
Very good examples of codes. I like a book that has a lot of code examples. It has a long list of index too for great searching.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-02-06

It is both detailed and easy to understand. Covers pretty much every aspect of Java with lots of examples but doesn't spoon feed you with overly simplified examples even in the early chapters. I haven't finished reading all of it yet (its a massive 1500 pages and packed) but so far I feel it has definitely been worth the money. I am looking forward to reading what seems to be an in depth coverage of Web Applications and Web Services in this book. And at the time of my writing of this review, this book is as up to date as it gets.

    Book Description

Persistence-the ability of data to outlive an instance of a program-is central to modern applications. Hibernate, the most popular Java persistence tool, provides automatic and transparent object/relational mapping making it a snap to work with SQL databases in Java applications. Hibernate applications are cheaper, more portable, and more resilient to change. Because it conforms to the new EJB 3.0 and Java Persistence 1.0 standard, Hibernate allows the developer to seamlessly create efficient, scalable Java EE applications.

Java Persistence with Hibernate explores Hibernate by developing an application that ties together hundreds of individual examples. You'll immediately dig into the rich programming model of Hibernate 3.2 and Java Persistence, working through queries, fetching strategies, caching, transactions, conversations, and more. You'll also appreciate the well-illustrated discussion of best practices in database design, object/relational mapping, and optimization techniques.

In this revised edition of the bestselling Hibernate in Action, authors Christian Bauer and Gavin King-the founder of the Hibernate project-cover Hibernate 3.2 in detail along with the EJB 3.0 and Java Persistence standard.

Delivered the item as mentioned in the item description. Very happy.

1 out of 5 stars An utter waste.......2007-06-07

The book is one of the most painful experiences I've had in recent time. I'm doing a Ph.D. right now. I know about pain.

Every chapter and section gives every minute detail of the APIs discussed, all the time. It's tough to describe how bad this makes it --- it feels like they're reading the code line by line and discussing every design decision made, in journal format. Paragraphs of side notes and gotchas are integrated right in the text, right in the normal text stream --- making it incredibly painful to filter out the important parts from the irrelevant. It's impossible to tell which parts are irrelevant until you're reading halfway into them, wasting the reader's time, patience, and memory. Then when you try to skip around, half the details you do need are just listed 'as discussed earlier.'

The examples cover little more than using single methods at a time. With the text being unreadable, it also lacks any coherent examples of even a basic application, putting anything they discuss together.

Fundamentally the text assumes that you're going to read and memorize every part of it before doing anything -- for over 800 pages, it's mindblowingly bad.

As a reference, the lack of organization guarantees you'll be digging through dozens of pages to get even basic answers. There is no reference material per se, it's all just reading through what you hope are relevant sections of the book. The index is only 16 pages, and completely worthless in helping you navigate.

3 stars for containing everything you need in there, somewhere. -1 star for being so sadistic about it. -1 star for being worthless as a reference.

    2 out of 5 stars Beginners... Beware!.......2007-05-26

I must say that I completely agree with Scott P. Stewart's review. The authors should have kept the book "pure hibernate" oriented. Constant references to JPA, interspersing xml mappings and annotations (again there is hibernate-specific & JPA standard here), causes the reader to loose focus on the subject. Otherwise, the authors have done a good job of explaining the concepts better than other hibernate books. I could find no better alternative on the subject.

If you are a beginner, you may want to first read the previous edition of this book - Hibernate in Action or grab a copy of Beginning Hibernate by Jeff Linwood & Dave Minter which I find less intimidating.

5 out of 5 stars Complete reference for Hibernate.......2007-05-25

This book not only covers standard Hibernate persistence, but also JPA persistence. It covers all topics from simple to advanced. It's a complete reference manual for using Hibernate. The only thing it's lacking is coverage of how to set up Hibernate/JPA with Spring, but that's probably not in the scope of this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally, a useful book!.......2007-05-21

This is one of the few books I have bought which actually has useful information. And, it provides the information in a clear, concise way. If you want to understand how Hibernate works, this is the book for you!

    Product Description

What is WebSphere? is the reference you need to start understanding, managing, and capitalizing on an IBM based, WebSphere infrastructure..... As a developer, mentor and technical trainer, the author, Cameron McKenzie, has been preaching the virtues of WebSphere for years. However, in his sermons, the same questions keep coming up, over and over again..... What is WebSphere? tackles those questions in a funny, informative and easy to understand manner. This book is the best tool around for demystifying IBM's middle-tier technology..... What is WebSphere? tackles those 'need to know' questions to which both WebSphere soldiers and J2EE neophytes need to have the answers..... If you want to learn about WebSphere in a hurry, but you don't want to read a 700 page textbook that is littered with unreadable code, this is the book for you. In fact, the author promises right off the bat to demystify WebSphere without throwing all sorts of HTML and Java code in your face. Of course, the author breaks that promise on about half a dozen pages, but the sentiment remains..... Whether you're a DBA, a senior systems analyst, a project manager, or a Java developer, there is knowledge in this book that you absolutely need to have..... The sections on demystifying J2EE and the WebSphere runtime environment will empower project managers to make more effective management decisions..... The section on connection pooling and JDBC management will enlighten DBAs..... The advanced sections on WebSphere classloaders, Java Naming (JNDI) and session management will enable developers to better leverage the services afforded to them by the WebSphere Application Server..... And the sections on the WebSphere runtime will help J2EE architects make more enlightened infrastructure decisions..... It doesn't matter who you are - if you are using WebSphere, you need the knowledge contained in this book! Order your copy now!

4 out of 5 stars A decent little read, but ..........2007-06-25

Let me say at the outset that I like the book very much. The author writes in an amusing but informative style, and a lot of the buzzword topics of J2EE are covered nicely.

    I was disappointed though with:

    (a) the marketing of the book: demystification, yes, but to a point. Few examples, and some topics (like EJBs and JMS) are very "light-on".
    (b) the price of the book: $73 is expensive for any textbook.

I think if the prospective buyer understands that this book is totally non-technical, very short, and is virtually a "Websphere for Dummies" book then they'll rate it 5 stars. If you want something to explain Websphere and J2EE concepts with greater significance then look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Glue for the puzzle.......2007-06-13

I have found this text to be outstanding in consolidating the many technologies which Websphere brings to the table. I am fairly new to these technologies, and the author explains the topics very well.

This is one of the rare times where reading a technical text book resulted right away in an ephiphany. The text explains the information so well, and the read is so easy that I feel my confidence growing as I read. Just a really great book for explaining WebSphere in a practical manner.

    ~Luke

5 out of 5 stars what you need to know, told in a way that makes you understand it.......2007-02-21

I picked up this book after reading the Java certification study guides by the same author. Like the others, this books was funny, entertaining, and dare I say it, enlightening.

I agree with other reviewers that the book is a bit more expensive than other books, but IBM related books always are. But the thing is, there is so much value in this book. The author doesn't waste the book with filler and illogical screenshots to fill up pages, like so many other books do. This book is concise, to the point, and because of that, its easy to read, and easy to understand. I'd much rather read 20 pages that explain a concept clearly, than 200 pages that are scattered and all over the place.

This is a great book, and a valuable read if you're going to get into the WebSphere or J2EE world. It's not filled with code, so if you want a code book, you're out of luck. But if you need to understand what WebSphere is, what it does, and how to use it, this definitely the book for you.

    A+

    3 out of 5 stars Overpriced.......2007-02-18

I think the book is easily overpriced by at least $30. The contents in the book serve as just introduction to all the J2EE topics and they sound like a brief canteen chat we have with our fellow programmers. After reading the book you can simply 'talk' about the all the ingredients in J2EE and learn nothing practical.
So if you are programmer and want some in depth knowledge in Websphere usage and it's practical applications, this is not for you.

4 out of 5 stars Great WebSphere and J2EE overview book.......2007-01-11

The book offers J2EE beginers and managers a great overview of the WebSphere family of products as well as a high level road map of all important J2EE technologies that are a available/supported. If you're already using WebSphere then you won't find anything specific/usefull in it - perhaps a complete general overview of WebSphere.
