Book Description

The formerly plump girl turned Thin Woman may now be happily married and a mother, but she hasnt lost her wit, her weakness for romance, or her knack for landing herself in trouble. With her irreverent sidekick and charwoman, Mrs. Roxie Molloy, at her side, Ellie has not only solved a crime or two, but has read every Gothic romance she can find and has begun introducing a young cousin, Ariel, to the finer points of the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Ghosts and romance.......2007-05-30

First introduced to readers in 1984's THE THIN WOMAN, Ellie Haskell has since --- over the course of 11 delightfully cozy mysteries --- gained a husband, three children, a career and a real penchant for crime solving. But in WITHERING HEIGHTS, her 12th adventure, Ellie's old demons come back to haunt her in what could be her toughest case yet.

Ellie and her outrageously flamboyant housekeeper, Mrs. Roxie Malloy, share more than just the love of solving mysteries. They both love old-fashioned Victorian Gothic novels, the kind with "a young woman who leaps at the chance to become a governess in a decaying mansion where Something Unspeakable is shut away in the north tower and melancholy music drifts up from the crypt." Ellie also recently has begun sharing her love of Gothic romances with her husband Ben's young relative Ariel, a troubled girl who seems to find solace in the escapist fantasies. That is, until Ariel's own family wins the lottery and disappears, presumably to hide away from money-grubbing relatives.

One rainy night, though, Ariel herself shows up at Ellie's home, begging for relief from her stepmother Betty, who has grown obsessed with the idea that the ghost of their newly purchased manor house still haunts his old property. Ariel encourages Ellie and Ben to intervene, and they agree, especially when Ellie learns that the manor is located in the Yorkshire moors, a short drive from the Brontës' legendary home. By a great coincidence, it just happens that Mrs. Malloy's younger sister Melody, with whom she hasn't spoken in 40 years, also lives in the same Yorkshire village. Figuring that it's high time for a reconciliation, Roxie decides to tag along as well.

Of course, a road trip to a new village means introductions to all sorts of quirky characters, from the displaced dowager, Lady Fiona, to the aptly-named cook, Mrs. Cake. Pretty soon, Ellie finds herself knee-deep in all their secrets and in more than one mystery.

But one secret in particular is eating Ellie up inside and causing all her old self-doubts and self-loathing to rear their ugly heads. Who is Valeria, the lovely and accomplished woman who seems to know Ben? Was she the real love of Ben's life, lost long before he met Ellie? And could Val's reappearance and Ben's sneaky behavior have anything to do with the menacing prophecy that Mrs. Malloy receives? "[A] woman of my acquaintance whose first name begins with E should stop living in a dream world, seeing as her hubby's old girlfriend is going to show up and this time around she'll stop at nothing to get him."

Dorothy Cannell's mysteries always have been enjoyable to read, but they have had a tendency to become formulaic after a while, particularly with regards to Ellie's somewhat chaotic home life. Removing Ellie from her home base --- and from her children, who are out of the picture for the entire novel --- revitalizes the plot considerably, giving this 12th adventure a new freshness. It also has a legion of new characters for readers to learn, a feat that can be a bit daunting for those accustomed to the regular denizens of Chitterton Fells.

Cannell adeptly plays with Gothic conventions and expectations, and particularly with Ellie's tendencies to fall into those somewhat overblown romantic notions. Ellie's character development is also notable, as her growing insecurities with regard to Val lead her to question everything about herself and her comfortable life. Cannell's many readers needn't fret too much, though --- it's clear that nothing really bad is going to happen to Ellie, and liberal foreshadowing and clue-dropping early on in the novel will lead many to guess (some of) the secrets even before the literary sleuths do. But there's nothing wrong with that --- Cannell's mysteries appeal primarily due to their humor (particularly the at-times wickedly funny dialogue) and their reassurances that, at the end of the day, all's right in Ellie's world.

5 out of 5 stars well worth the wait.......2007-05-22

After a long and much missed absence, Dorothy Cannell once again enthralls with her latest Ellie Haskell installment, "Withering Heights." This time around, Dorothy Cannell takes on the gothic romance genre in this bitingly entertaining new mystery novel.

Life, for Ariel Hopkins, is imitating art a little too much for the young thirteen year old. Her father has recently bought an old manor in Yorkshire with his lottery winnings -- that in itself wouldn't be quite so bad, after all, like Ellie, Ariel does share a love for Gothic romances -- but when Ariel's stepmother, Betty, gets the notion that the previous owner of the manor, Lady Fiona, had murdered her mysteriously missing husband and that the body of said absent husband was buried somewhere on the property, and takes it upon herself to prove her case, Ariel turns to Ellie for help. Some rather strange things are occurring at the manor and this is affecting the Hopkins family alarmingly. Can Ellie (along with her wonderful husband Ben, and trusty housekeeper, Mrs. Malloy) get to the bottom of things? Ellie is sure she can. But when an ex-girlfriend of Ben's makes an appearance, Ellie finds herself torn between the strange happenings at the manor and worrying if her marriage is in jeopardy...

It is always a joy to read a new mystery novel from one of my favourite authors, and it is a double joy to note that this latest Ellie Haskell installment rates alongside my other favourties in the series as well (like "How to Murder Your Mother-in-Law" & "How to Murder the Man of Your Dreams."). "Withering Heights" was a joy to read from beginning to end. For readers who demand a dead body on page one and by the numbers kind of investigation, this may not be the book for you. For readers who enjoy quirky and eccentric characters, tongue-in-cheek humour, lots of ambiance and a storyline that's worth its circuitous path, unplug your 'phones and snuggle up in your favourite comfy chair -- this is a read to be savoured and enjoyed along with your favourite biscuits and glass of sherry. Thank you Dorothy Cannell for an afternoon well spent.

(P.S. Anyone else notice how "Withering Heights" seemed to echo du Maurier's "Rebecca?")

4 out of 5 stars A super fun read.......2007-05-10

I love an author who can convey a strong sense of presence with her words. Just listen to the first page from Withering Heights, "The storm hurled itself against the blurred contours of the house like an angry sea...fit only for human beasts of prey and the shadowy vigils of unholy spirits denied respite beneath a sanctified churchyard earth."

I must confess I began reading this book on a similarly stormy night while on vacation, tucked in the attic of an ancient Irish manor. It was an irresistible combination. With a bit of romance, mystery, humor, psychology, a pinch of the supernatural, and a dollop of murder thrown in for good measure, Withering Heights has all the necessary ingredients for an evening's enjoyment.

Dorothy Cannell's style is delightful and properly spiced with wonderful English sayings that while common to the Brits, sound quaint and utterly charming to my American ear. Not too scary, graphic, or morbid, Withering Heights is a comforting, yet contemporary reminder of simpler times and simpler crimes.

Told in the first person, the protagonist, Ellie Haskell, is a finely drawn character who is easily to love. Her unabashed adoration for her husband Ben, and her all-too-human insecurities where he is concerned, makes her a sympathetic and compelling figure.

Add a compassionate nature, a strong maternal instinct and a partner-in-crime whose droll humor and fashion sense (or lack thereof) make for entertaining conversations and lively adventures--and you have the perfect recipe for an infinitely sustainable mystery series along the lines of Agatha Christie.

My only complaint with Withering Heights is a minor one--there are so many characters. I readily admit it could have been jet lag, the frequent thunderous claps or my advancing years, but I did have difficulty keeping them all straight. That being said, I'm looking forward to reading more of Ellie Haskell and Mrs. Roxie Malloy, the next time I'm looking for something to pass the wee hours.

Armchair Interviews says: Wonderful read for the wee hours or the beach or in front of the fireplace.

5 out of 5 stars delightful and charming amateur sleuth .......2007-04-21

With her three children spending some time at their grandparent's home, Ellie Haskell is looking forward to spending quality romantic time with her husband Ben without the interruptions that kids often bring. Alas, her idea of a romantic week is not to be because thirteen year old Ariel, the daughter of Ben's second cousin Tom Hopkins arrives on their doorstep. Her parents won the lottery and moved to Yorkshire in the town of Milton Moore where they bought Cragstone from a lady who didn't have the many to afford living there.

Ariel wants Ellie, Ben and their housekeeper Roxie Malloy to come to Cragstone House. Strange things are happening there like lights going on and off and doors found open. Ariel's step-mother Betty believes the former own Lady Fiona wants them out of the place because she killed her husband and buried him on the grounds. When they arrive at Ariel's new home, everyone tells her Betty's imagination is running away from her. Ellie senses evil in the air starting with Mr. Scrimshank, Lady Fiona and her husband's investment consultant who might be embezzling their funds. Mr. Gallagher's nanny dies and another death occurs which on the surface seem like accidents or natural deaths but Ellie feels there is more to it than meets the eye. She must be on the right track because someone tries to kill her, Betty and Ariel.

It has been a long time since Dorothy Cannell has written an Ellie Haskell book but was well worth the wait. WITHERING HEIGHTS is a delightful and charming amateur sleuth tale with a gothic atmosphere that make the house seem spooky. An entertaining sub-plot involves the beautiful Valeria who has come to take care of Nanny but seems more interested in Ben which make the heroine jealous. Readers will love the eccentric and quirky support cast and eagerly await the next Ellie Haskell mystery.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to the Language.......2007-03-31

This is an excellent book for the beginning Haskell student. Haskell is a relatively new programming language that is oriented around functions as the main programming paradigm. (For more information about Haskell look at the Wikipedia entry and/or do a Google search.)

This book is not for the Haskell pro, instead it is oriented to a simple approach that will get you started. I would question the author in his statements that simplicity, clarity, and elegance are the key goals of the language. Eventually perhaps, but getting started in Haskell is not the easiest thing to do.

What Mr. Hutton has done is write a book that gets you started quickly and leaves you in a position to take it further if you wish with more complex books. About half of this book is dedicated to introducing the main features of the language, the other half is examples and case studies of programming in Haskell. It's an excellent approach and will help with the overall acceptance of the language.

2 out of 5 stars Good introduction but the title is misleading.......2007-03-19

This is a very good introduction to the fundamentals concepts of haskell but it doesn't teach you what you need to know to start writing (or reading) non-trivial programs. Topics that are not covered at all are monad rules, monad trasformers and monad functions like mapM. Syntactic sugars not covered at all are "module", "newtype", "case/of", "let/in".

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction.......2007-03-11

If you've been following the the programming language blogs you'll notice haskell has been getting a lot of attention. However haskell is so different from any conventional language out there that your eyes will glaze over and your head may start to hurt when attempting to learn the language.

This book fills in the beginners gap. The book starts off with the very basics of functional programming. Each chapter builds upon the previous chapters and before you know if you're writing haskell programs using monadic concepts.

I feel that after reading this book I'll be able to follow online discussions about haskell and filter hype from substance.

5 out of 5 stars Great Text!.......2007-02-20

Graham Hutton has written a wonderful introduction to functional programming in Haskell. I'm using it as part of an undergraduate level course on programming languages and I'm amazed at how fast my students have understood issues with which previous classes of mine have struggled. In my opinion, this is *the* best introductory text available on functional programming in any language. Thanks Graham!!!

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Haskell.......2007-02-16

Hutton's book is an excellent introduction for programmers approaching Haskell for the first time. Hutton keeps the focus on the core concepts of the language and avoids the advanced topics (of which there are many). The book is fairly light at 171 pages, but for an introductory text I consider this appropriate - a weighty tome might intimidate a reader who just wants a introductory overview. That said, if you are already an intermediate level Haskell hacker, you will likely not find anything of use in this text.

5 out of 5 stars Miriam Haskell-- the QUEEN of Costume Jewelry!.......2000-05-11

She is definately a QUEEN when it comes to costume jewelry. If you are a fan of her Jewels, you won't be sorry buying this book. (Amazon is the best place too!)

3 out of 5 stars Jewels of Miriam Haskell.......2000-04-22

Miriam Haskell is recognized as an important American costume jewelry designer in this wonderful coffee table book. She had a penchant for the unusual with her ostentatious accessories. She was born in 1899 in Tell City, Indiana to immigrant parents (a Russian father and a Prussian mother).

At the dawn of the Roaring Twenties, she moved to New York City with $500 in her pocket, opening a small boutique. Named Le Bijou de L'Heure, there she sold costume jewelry that she designed. In the early 1920's, Haskell advertised that "colored glass necklaces, one for each outfit, are considered a necessity this year."

Not only was Haskell riding the wave of the Roaring Twenties, she was creating a wave of her own. The Twenties were the years that all of the fashion rules were broken. Haskell's unbounded creativity met with enormous popularity. The prices for her costume jewelry were much lower than the cost of precious metals and stones, so anyone could afford to look fashionable.

The popularity of her costume jewelry continued, even after the stock market crash. Her sales did not drop significantly until 1931. Another difficulty Haskell encountered was the lack of material available for jewelry during WWII when glass from Bohemia and white metal was scarce.

Haskell never registered her designs, although she began to sign her pieces in 1950. The Miriam Haskell trademark was not received until 1988, 64 years after she began designing. Because there were no marks to identify her work prior to 1950, it took a great deal of research on author Cera's part to verify pieces of costume jewelry as Haskell's. Cera relied upon advertisements in magazines and newspapers, and photographs of movie stars shown wearing jewelry attributed to Haskell.

Haskell drew inspiration for her designs from many cultures - South America, China, Greece and the US southwest Indian designs. Her designs mimicked or consisted of any and all materials, including flotsam, stones, seeds, berries and beans.

For the collector of costume jewelry, this book is a keeper.

2 out of 5 stars The Jewels of Miriam Haskell.......2000-02-08

I had so much looked forward to reading this book that when it arrived I was disappointed. The text was rather disorganised in places and so it was hard to follow the points the author was making about the early life and various influences upon Miriam Haskell. Most of the book was focused on one designer and most of the pictures, although they are very nice pictures, came from the same few sources. I was hoping for a carefully researched piece which told me a lot more about Haskell and gave a much wider assortment of the pieces she designed. The book left you asking more questions than it answered and wanting more variety then it presented.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, beautiful pictures, interesting history........1998-05-10

I felt this book was worth the price. For the person interested in Miriam Haskell, her history, and the history of her company, it is quite good. I wanted some practical information, however, and that was not quite there. For instance, what kind of findings were used? How to tell a fake hang tag from a true one? These are some of the things that would make this book super useful. Additionally, only the top-of-the-line pieces were pictured. I would have liked to see some of the lower-end production for identification purposes. All in all, however, it was a very good book and well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars History that's great reading, and interesting .......2006-07-04

This captures the sense of "being there", and pulls the reader into Appalachia history, like reading a good novel.

Concisely edited for maximum impact, without loss of content.(a fine balancing act by the editors, that took over a decade to compile!)

This is so engaging, tha I have bought several as gifts.

Outstanding documentation, and great storytelling abound.

Reference, coffetable, and personal library uses are a must.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Overview of Appalachian Culture, Music, Literature & Religion.......2006-06-21

As a undergrad who is finishing up my studies in History with a minor in Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State-I will go on and get my master's in Appalachian & Bluegrass studies .
This is a well-written resource that is full of any information of the Appalachia's. From literature, religion, mountain music, conservation, culture, movies, Foxfire,-more than you can digest in one reading.

The author breaks each catagory down in sections that deal with a specific topic. This is a must for your library. This is a thick volume that should have been broken down into 4 volumes. the book is very bulky and heavy. I guess all the education and reading does weigh a lot!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pair: Two Books That Change The Way We See Appalachia.......2006-05-15

Like Amazon's pairing, and featured on National Public Radio, The Encyclopedia of Appalachia and The United States of Appalachia: How Southern Mountaineers Brought Independence, Culture and Enlightenment to America, are two excellent and landmark books in understanding the history, cultures and social importance of the Southern Mountains to our country. The Encyclopedia is divided into several sections: land, people, economy, culture, and institutions (such as schools, media). Like any encyclopedia, the entries are short but concise, and provide just enough information to inform but not bore you and give a long list of resources for more scholarship. The experts and authors that contributed to the book come from colleges around the South and nation. Just leafing through this opus is rewarding. The richness and diversity of the region come through in every section. The United States of Appalachia is similar in its theme -- that Appalachia has been overlooked and undervalued -- but it provides more in-depth and inspiring portraits of Appalachian Americans who have been on the cutting edge of American innovations and social movements. It is divided into several parts: music, American Revolution, abolitionist movement, labor movements, literature, civil rights movement, and the environment.

Both of the these books are indispensable and highly recommended for all readers interested in history and life from one of our country's most misunderstood regions.

5 out of 5 stars The Reference for the Region.......2006-03-25

I was priviledged to be at the Appalachian Studies conference where this mammoth work was unveiled, and it achieves it's purpose: it is a tremenous reference for all things Appalachian. I first knew about the encyclopedia when my father was contacted a few years ago to author a few articles for inclusion in the agriculture section. The editors have worked hard to find the most qualified people to write in every section- my dad grew up in Buchanan County, Virginia on a sustenance farm, and is now an agronomist who works for the University of Kentucky. Every contributor is this qualified!

One note: if you are looking for an "introduction" to the Appalachian Region, this is not it. This is more of a reference, reading this cover to cover would be somewhat comparable to reading the dictionary through, I would imagine. If you want an introduction, go for "A Handbook to Appalachia", by University of Tennessee Press, or, for a less scholarly but quite interesting take, the Foxfire series.

When I got my copy of the Encyclopedia, I was very impressed. I can't wait until I have time to sit down with it for a long while and simply browse through its pages and see how many new things I learn. As an undergraduate researcher in Appalachian Religion, I look forward especially to reading the religion section as edited by Howard Dorgan (whom I luckily had the chance to meet at the conference), the premier authority on religion in Appalachia.

For all scholars of Appalachia, this reference is invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2006-03-15

Comprehensive tome on every aspect of life in the Appalachian region. Some 1800 pages, 30 sections. 170 articles on music alone. Appalachia is not your grandfather's mountain anymore!
If you thought the hills were about hoedowns and yee-haws, this volume will make you think again. Consider, for example, that just in the musical sphere, Jimmy Blanton, Bessie Smith, George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, and Edgar Meyer were all born and raised in Appalachia.

4 out of 5 stars Original classic, theoretical.......2004-11-27

Bird and Wadler got me started on functional programming. Before that, I'd only seen discussions of C++/STL functors and functions like for, map etcetera.

B&W was dense, and magic. It reminded me of the first time I read the K&R C book, you're following along fine, and all of a sudden you're off the deep end!

The syntax, sort of ML-like adds to the 'magic' feel of it all. Overall I think it's a good book. But like with K&R, make this your second or third book, to ground you in the fundamentals after you've become somewhat familiar with the syntax and application of a particular fnal language.

That said, it covers a wide breadth of topics, and does justice to them as well. But this opinion comes from a newbie at functional programming, so caveat lector!

For me, it made me realise that there was a whole 'new' way of programming, vastly bigger than the few functions C++ had in its STL, and that C++ syntax mostly got in the way. However, perhaps because of this book, I never quite grokked Haskell/ML syntax either, though LISP I find easy (easier).

3 out of 5 stars Nice book on functional programming.......2002-11-17

This is a good introduction to functional programming.
It is less language specific than some of the other books.

5 out of 5 stars MIRIAM HASKELL JEWELRY (SCHIFFER BOOK).......2007-03-31

This is a fantastic resource book for the Vintage Jewelry Collector or Seller. It is wonderfully organized & beautifully illustrated with many large color pictures. The descriptions are concise & precise. Values are given after each description.
There is also a wonderful & informative section on Identifying & Dating Haskell Jewelry~vintage to present~including clasps & materials. This section also has clear close-up photographs.
I feel it is an invaluable tool for the serious collector. And well worth the investment!

5 out of 5 stars Costume Jewelry at its best.......2006-09-09

Dealing with jewelry is both to me, profession and hobby. So I also like reading books about the stuff I love, and this one really got past my expectations. It helps getting insight not only in a really interesting branch of the jewelry business, but tells also about the people behind the design. At the same time, the author manages to give a helpful guide to the ambitioned collector of that kind. The book reminds one how much fun it is to create and wear exceptional pieces and tells some stories that are connected with those. The pictures are magnificent. This book is motivation for new ideas and simply fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Miriam Haskell Jewelry (Schiffer Book for Collectors(Hardcover)).......2005-07-12

This book is one of the finest that I have seen. The illustrations are beautifully done. You almost want to frame
the water colors. There is an interesting history of the
Miriam Haskell jewelry, and the descriptions of the jewelry are
well done. I highly recommend this book to any vintage jewelry collector, especially those of you who like the Haskell line.

2 out of 5 stars some weird choices.......2006-11-03

It's always easy to criticize somebody's personal choises when it comes to the movies and the stars, but this book is dedicated to the most unforgettable ACTRESSES and not STARS of the studio era. So it comes pretty natural to ask : Is Esther Williams such an unforgettable actress that the author had to overlook Margaret Sullavan? Was Grace Kelly's talent so overwhelming to forget that Miriam Hopkins had such an individuality in the acting process that she kept on working with such directors as Lubitsch, Wyler, Mamoulian, Hawks and Vidor to stunning results? What was wrong with Mary Astor's acting and what is right with Kim Novak's ?
Actress to me means Patricia Neal or Shelley Winters - Norma Shearer or Natalie Wood were stars....think about it.

5 out of 5 stars "Oldies" but still "goodies".......2006-10-30

I recently read this volume as well as its companion, Leading Men: The 50 Most Unforgettable Actors of the Studio Era, and thoroughly enjoyed both while agreeing with others that the selections may have been biased if executives within the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) organization were involved in the decision as to whom to include and whom to omit. For example, Ann Sheridan (who appears in films shown on TCM) but not Shirley Temple (who doesn't). That said, both volumes offer a Foreword by Robert Osborne and an Introduction by Molly Haskell and have the same reader-friendly format which consists of a brief but adequate bio of the given actress followed by "Style Notes" and "Behind the Scenes" sections. Here are a few brief excerpts.

From the brief bio of Katharine Hepburn: "Her film work kept her a star despite frequent breaks to pursue theatrical projects and care for [Spencer Tracy] as his health declined. She put her salary on the line so he could play opposite her in his last film, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967). He died 17 days after filming was complete. Katharine won an Oscar for the film, but she said she could never watch it because the memories were too painful."

From the brief bio of Vivien Leigh: "Filming Gone with the Wind was a terrible experience for Vivien. She connected well with the film's first director George Cukor, but he was fired after a few weeks. Victor Fleming, a good friend of Clark Gable's, took over, and Vivien felt like a second-class citizen. Fleming's only direction to her was `Ham it up!' She secretly went to Cukor each Sunday to work on the next week's scenes. One week she accidentally ran into Olivia De Havilland, who was playing Melanie. She was doing the same thing."

From the "Style Notes" of Lauren Bacall: "When she became pregnant in the late 1940s, she designed a maternity wardrobe that was decades ahead of its time: suits and skirts that capitalized on her changing figure rather than concealing it."

From the "Style Notes" of Ava Gardner: "The sultry, appraising gaze that [she] often gives on camera is really a squint - she needed glasses but could not wear them in her pictures."

From the "Style Notes" of Marilyn Monroe: She "didn't wear anything to distract from her curves, so she wore no underwear. Often she was sown into her tight-fitting gowns."

From "Behind the Scenes" of Joan Crawford: She "would go head-to-head with anyone to keep her star status, but she met her match in Bette Davis when the longtime rivals were cast as abusive sisters in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) Bette kicked Joan in the head so hard during a fight scene that she required stitches. When Bette had to drag Joan across a room, Joan loaded her pockets with weights, causing an injury to Bette's back that lasted for days. Baby Jane was a hit and the two were paired again for Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), but after three weeks of the rematch, Joan threw in the towel and quit the film." Olivia De Havilland replaced her.

From "Behind the Scenes" of Audrey Hepburn: "Initially, Gregory Peck turned down the male lead in Roman Holiday (1953) because he didn't want to play second fiddle to an unknown actress. Director William Wyler persuaded him to take the role, yet when Peck realized how wonderful Audrey was going to be in the part, he insisted that the studio give her billing equal to his. They became lifelong friends."

It would be unfair to expect more of this volume than what it was intended to be: An entertaining, often informative discussion of 50 actresses of the studio era, most of whom are "unforgettable." More a quibble than a complaint, I wish those who organized the material in this volume had also identified (preferably in an annotated bibliography) the biography of each actress which is generally regarded as most accurate and comprehensive.

2 out of 5 stars FAR TOO MANY EXCLUSIONS.......2006-10-29

Books of this type are very irritating. To list the "fifty MOST unforgettable actresses" from the golden age of Hollywood is a daunting undertaking. In this case, far too many wonderful actresses from that era have been left out, and a younger person looking at the book will not get an accurate impression of old Hollywood.

What makes an actress unforgettable? Many reasons. Some have won Academy Awards. Most didn't. Some were box-office champions. Many weren't. It all adds up to the charm, talent, and personality of the actress and the public's warm acceptance of her.

The following list of unforgettable leading actresses omitted from the book should make the author realize an error in judgment in releasing it as it is - - - - Alice Faye, Joan Fontaine, Jeanette MacDonald, Shirley Temple, Dorothy Lamour, Margaret Sullavan, Merle Oberon, Deanna Durbin, Ida Lupino, Paulette Goddard, Janet Gaynor, Dorothy McGuire, Betty Hutton, Linda Darnell, Jane Wyman, Sonja Henie, Jennifer Jones, Mary Martin, Veronica Lake, Laraine Day, June Allyson, Joan Bennett, Kathyrn Grayson, Jean Simmons, Patricia Neal, Joan Blondell, Jeanne Crain, Constance Bennett, Betty Grable, Eleanor Parker, Ruby Keeler, and Anne Baxter, among others.

It would have been better to have titled the book "LEADING LADIES: Fifty Unforgettable Actresses." Then a Volume 2 could follow with another fifty.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift Item!!!.......2006-10-07

I recently purchased this book to give to a family friend who was turning 80 years old. What do you buy for someone who already has everything? Well, she just loved this book. I'm sure it brought back memories from years ago. I also looked through the book before giving it to her and found it very interesting and readable. This is the kind of book you can pick up and browse through it for a few minutes or a few hours of entertainment. It's also nice for guests to look at when they visit your home. Nice photos as well. I'm buying more copies to give as gifts and looking forward to the next book on Leading Men to be published.

Book Description

The proliferation of wireless networks and small portable computing devices has led to the emergence of the mobile computing paradigm. Mobile and nomadic users carrying laptops or hand-held computers are able to connect to the Internet through publicly available wireline or wireless networks. In the near future, this trend can only grow as exciting new services and infrastructures delivering wireless voice and multimedia data are deployed. <br/> <em>Any Time, Anywhere Computing: Mobile Computing Concepts and Technology</em> is intended for technical and non-technical readers. It includes substantial coverage of the technologies that are shaping mobile computing. Current and future portables technology is covered and explained. Similarly, current and future wireless telecommunication networks technology is covered and reviewed. By presenting commercial solutions and middleware, this book will also help IT professionals who are looking for mobile solutions to their enterprise computing needs. Finally, this book surveys a vast body of recent research in the area of mobile computing. The research coverage is likely to benefit researchers and students from academia as well as industry.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Inadequate technical content.......2001-02-21

Since the first author of this book offers graduate courses in mobile computing, and the table of contents looked good, I bought this book at great expense. (The price is quite outrageous for developing countries). I was shocked to find that the book has very little technical details on any of the topics covered. The book's seven chapters constitute only 135 pages, which also includes about 25 photos of various mobile devices! At best, this book provides a preliminary overview of the area.

5 out of 5 stars Well crafted industry overview.......2001-01-23

While this volume is dated in terms of market data and product references, the engineering concepts that it covers are highly applicable to the evolving realm of wireless communications and portable computing. This is an excelent primer in the basic concepts of a rapidly evolving industry, and many of the standards and architectures that are discussed have been implemented since the release of the book. I would highly recommend this book for individuals that want insight into the underlying infrastructure that supports mobile information appliances.

1 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings - low quality.......1999-11-27

The book tries to cover too many aspects of mobile computing in an unstructured and inconsistent way. While the title sounds promising, the quality of the book is low. Most of the figures are bitmaps, even the text in many figures is bitmap and, thus, quite often unreadable. While the authors try to give up-to-date examples of mobile devices, pictures with, e.g., three identical camcorders are superfluous. However, for the price of the book the inconsistencies and errors are really annoying. Just some examples: At the time of writing the book (June 99), GSM did not have 20+ million subscibers as the authors write but almost 200 Million! Examples like WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) are based on the very first drafts, since 1998 new reference models have been published that differ much from the one shown in the book. Furthermore, many little wrong details will confuse readers: ETSI is not a successor for CCITT standards, many tables are wrong (GSM cells can cover more than 10km etc.), DECT has been renamed to Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications long time ago, concepts of different systems are mixed (e.g., Mobile IP, CDPD and GPRS) in one chapter etc. It is unclear for a reader which topics are standards, which are new results from research, and what is already available for customers. A reader who knows something about mobile communications gets the impression that the authors simply collected information to some topics wherever available but did not write a consistent, up-to-date book. New information about hardware is mixed with graphs from 1994 showing average prices of cellular phones, new results from research are mixed with outdated specifications of cellular phone networks - overall a book I cannot recommend, particularly not for this price.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully elusive garden images.......2002-04-20

While the text essays in this book are a bit dry, the photographic reproductions are of top notch quality. Kenna's photographs are beautifully elusive, sometimes printed quite dark, yet remain salient throughout. I found myself wondering how the images looked on the contact sheets, straight, with no darkroom manipulations. This book serves as a great example of what you can do in the darkroom to bring out a more poignant image than you actually shot at the location. It should be required for anyone who works with black and white photography in the darkroom; not because you will gleen any certain tips or techiques but because you will study the final results and perhaps wonder how they were achieved.

As a photographer, this book will remain in my photo book collection and it is Kenna's strongest work to date.

5 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT MAGIC.......2001-02-02

I am very lucky indeed to have been able to see many of Michael Kenna's photographs at live exhibitions, both in Washington, D.C. and in New York City. Any art book is a "poor" substitution for the real thing, but there are some books that can give you true, beautiful examples of specific art works that then, hopefully, can someday be seen live. Kenna is a British photographer, in his 50's, who now lives in San Francisco....and seems to concentrate, in large part, on landscapes as his subjects. His images in this book are of the gardens created by Andre Le Notre, "the most important garden designer of the court of Louis XIV." In approximately 6o plates on 80 pages, we are taken to 10 different locations in France including the Tuileries in Paris and Versailles and Fontainebleau. The photographs are nothing short of breathtaking, obviously taken at dawn or dusk when the natural light is almost unreal. These images evoke mysterious, art movie settings---one almost expects a stranger to appear from one of the designed paths or pools or from behind one of the symmetrical trees or shrubs. All of it: the photographs, the accompanying essay, the way the book is put together with obvious care and love is magnificent magic.

5 out of 5 stars excellent images.......2000-10-12

A beautiful book that is full of some of Michael Kenna's finest images. Truely beautiful black and white printing. Michael Kenna is a master in his own time. Some of the fimest landscape I have ever seen. A must have for photography lovers!!

Book Description

When and why did large-scale exhibitions of Old Master paintings begin, and how have they evolved? In this book an eminent art historian examines the intriguing history and significance of international art exhibitions, from the first "Old Master" shows in Rome and Florence in the seventeenth century to the twentieth-century exhibits that became vehicles of foreign and cultural policy.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A little lacking.......2001-02-22

I bought this book because I was particularly interested in how old master exhibitions have evolved to the present date. This book does a great job of tracing the history of old master exhibitions but fails to even mention the old master blockbuster exhibitions in the second half of the 20th century. The cover image features the National Gallery's recent Vermeer exhibition but it's not even mentioned in the book. I know Mr. Haskell passed away in Jan 2000 so perhaps he may not have been able to complete the chronology prior to the book's publication.
