Customer Reviews:
Very good .......2007-01-24
As a long time Delphi programmer from v1 through v7, C++ Builder programmer from v1 through v3, and Kylix programmer from v1 through v3, I found this book to be a very useful "nutshell" type book which provides both Delphi and C++ examples throughout.
As others have noted though, this is not the book you want if you expect more than cursory treatment [...]- I didn't so I wasn't disappointed.
Well written to boot.
Rosetta Book.......2007-01-08
I know Assembly, C, and C++, and until I read this book, did not know any Pascal. I got the book mainly to help me with Borland Developer Studio 2006. The last version I purchased from Borland was C++ Builder 4.0 and I wanted (in hard copy so I could read away from the computer) to understand the differences between the compilers. The book is written mostly for Pascal programmers, but it does a decent job covering C++.
A lot of the programs, utilities, and examples I see from various sources are in Pascal. I decided now was as good a time to learn a new language as any. For my situation, this book was the perfect choice. I could read the C++ code then use that understanding to help me learn Pascal, all while becoming familiar with Borland's new environment.
The book itself is fairly well written, though many parts are difficult to follow. It is not the right book for a new programmer - but compared to other programming books, it is a gem. If you buy this book, expect to spend time tweaking some of the examples to make them work, and don't expect to be told everything you need to complete the lessons. With that said, there was nothing I could not make work or figure out with a little thinking - which actually turned out to be a good thing because I learned quite a bit. There are also many good Windows programming techniques and ideas, which are quite valuable themselves.
My overall impression? All serious Borland BSD users should have this book on their shelf.
A very good book for Delphi beginners.......2007-01-08
I have several years of experience with C/C++ using MFC and Borland C++ Builder, and I have long been planning to expand my knowledge to Delphi. To this end, I found this book extremely well written with plain, well orgnized and easy to understand English. Albeit English is not my native language but it took me just 3 hours to finish reading almost half of the book (near 300 pages) with much enjoyment and I feel I already have a good jump start with Delphi. Of course, I guess the presented material might appear too fundamental to Delphi masters, but it is definetly a good book for someone who already have some experience with C/C++ but want to learn Delphi.
Some have complained .NET is only covered at the miminum. But to me this is acceptable since I can find information from other books once I get a hold of Delphi in general. In short, this is a very good book and I would happily rate it with 5 starts.
If your learning from scratch...get THI S book!.......2007-01-04
Having been familiar with Pascal in the past but not programming for a few years i decided to get back into the swing. But OOP and Delphi seemed like a whole new language to me. This book refreshed me on the basics and guided me through the rest. Now i look forward to writing in Delphi ... without breaking a sweat!
A very well done book.......2006-03-09
This is a splendid book. It systematically reviews the BDS/Delphi programming framework, and is written in excellent English. In contrast to the flood of books available to get new and migrating programmers up to speed with Microsoft's languages, Borland has lacked anything equivalent until now. As the owner/reader of about 100 Delphi books, some of which include more detail on much narrower topics and most of which are less well written, I was pleased to get and read this book. I learned things from it, even though I've been using Delphi since version 1. If you are looking for a first book on Delphi, this is clearly the best, although its target audience includes not just neophytes but also those considering a language/platform transition (via its coverage of C# differences). We need more such books. The fact that this immensely readable book cannot be all things to all people and (coming out within a few months of the latest release) cannot comprehensively cover all the latest langauge developments, does not detract from its intrinsic value.

Great Book a must have!.......2007-03-27
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! This is a great book to get you involved in this subject. Plenty of examples for all skill levels and are both detailed and useful. Much of this information can't be found in other books. The chapters are well written and in-depth. I recommend this book for anyone that is trying to become an expert on the subject.
disappointing.......2002-12-11
I found this book disappointing; it lacks essential ADO error handling details. Never having used ADO before, I had to deliver an ADO delphi application in a thight schedule and unfortenately this book didn't help me much.
Not only about ADO.......2002-06-06
Based on the title of this Delphi and ADO book: Advanced Delphi Developer's Guide to ADO, I expected "only" coverage of ADOExpress in Delphi. However, that's only a part of this book. The book consists of 23 chapters, starting with the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), OLE DB Providers, ADO and its role in the Delphi Database Architecture. ADOExpress components like TADOCOnnection, TADOCommand, TADODataSet etc. are covered in a lot of detail - as expected. However, apart from these "basics", the book also contains chapters that explain how to actually build ADO Applications, and how to do Business Graphics and Reporting with ADO. Even after those chapter, we're only still halfway the book.
Further topics include OLAP and ADO, ADOX in Delphi, JRO Objects, and a very helpful chapter on deploying ADO applications. Chapter 19 and later introduce Distributed Computing; Windows DNA (Distributed interNet Applications), including RDS and MTS with ADO. There's even a chapter on MIDAS ADO Applications.
There are also a number of appendices; and the most interesting one covers BDE to ADO migration issues!
Ignore the bad reviews, this book is worth buying.......2002-04-06
Well, to begin with I'm don't understand why the book got so many bad reviews. While it may not an advanced text, it does cover the Delphi side of ADO very well. I have an almost complete Delphi reference library (haven't added the D6 stuff yet). I can absolutely say that this book covers more ADO than the other books I've bought (D6 Developer's Guide devotes 6 pages to the topic, D4 Unleashed devotes NO pages, and Mastering D5 devotes less than 10 pages).
I don't think the bad reviewers did read the book at all. This book covers Delphi ADO use and not ADO technology basics. If you are looking for an "Inside ADO Nuts-And-Bolts" type of book, buy another book, like the Microsoft Press series since ADO is a Microsoft technology. But if you want to learn how to use the ADO Express component suite for Delphi, then this is the book for you. I've been doing Delphi for 6 years now and I am no novice, and I certainly found the book helpful.
On a side note, I would add that while the grammar in the book may not be perfect (it definitely needed better proofing before press time), the Authors unquestionably know the material. It's worth an A+ in my opinion, and I am thankful to have gotten ahold of solid material for a change. I do find that using Newgroups isn't helpful since the people tend to rant and rave about things completed unrelated to the posted topics. This book delivers focused material, and it has practical examples that you can apply and test right away. A companion CD is included, which I find to be a nice touch.
Great book, great topic, and useful information. The bottom line is try it for yourself. I did.
Use it as a door stop.......2002-02-26
Absolutely dreadful!! This is probably the worst computer book I've ever bought. The authors must have been "on" something when they wrote it, and I can confidently say it'll be getting pulped by the publishers soon.
Gives nothing the regular Borland documentation doesn't already cover. The code examples do not fill me with confidence that the authors actually understand Delphi programming basics either.
You are better buying Understanding ADO from Microsoft press - I had to after reading this drivel.

Book Description
It’s A.D. 76 during the reign of Vespasian, and Marcus Didius Falco, a Roman “informer,” has achieved much in his life. He’s joined the equestrian rank, allowing him to marry Helena Justina, the Senator’s beloved daughter. But now he’s just been hired to undergo a dangerous mission: to pry his brother-in-law Aulus, a scholar on the way to study in Athens, away from a murder investigation involving two dead women at the ancient site of the Olympic Games. Traveling to Greece under the guise of being tourists, Falco and Helena visit the country’s classic sites in order to investigate the suspicious goings-on and shady dealings of Seven Sights, a fly-by-night travel agency. What begins as a risky expedition becomes sinister when Aulus, too, goes missing in what becomes Falco’s most complex and high-stakes case yet.

Audio Version of a Fun Road Trip Mystery .......2007-06-22
It always makes me happy to see a new Falco mystery. In fact I was somewhat surprised to realize that although this is the 17th case for Falco only about five or six years had passed in the Roman Empire.
Anyway, this one is definitely one of Davis' better efforts. While Falco had previously traveled outside of Rome on a number of adventures, this book is a great satire of travel tours-- both ancient and modern. I sympathized with Falco beating off guides at various historical sites and dealing with the odd assortment of people who seem to end up together in tour groups.
As for the narrator, Christian Rodska, he does a very believable Falco, a little coarse and tough, with a cynical outlook. However he is a sentimental pushover when it comes to those he loves.
If you have about 11 hours and 15 minutes of driving time (or house work time for that matter) then give this one a try.
Not historical enough.......2007-05-19
I like a lot of history with my fiction, and the Steven Saylor Gordianus the Finder series is much better at that.
Falco: A Series to Love.......2007-03-09
This is the 17th (!) book in the amazing series about Didius Falco, an "informer" and sometime imperial agent in Rome circa 76AD. As usual, much of the book involves interactions between Falco, his wife, family and friends in the context of imperial Rome. This time we travel through various towns in Greece investigating two murders on two different foreign tours booked from Rome.
Each book can be read separately from the rest of the series, but ideally the reader will start at the beginning, Silver Pigs. It is important to not miss Two for the Lions, which resolves threads from earlier volumes.

Falco on the road again.......2006-12-22
While I don't think that the plot of this Marcus Didius Falco potboiler was the best of the series to date, the vast array of information presented the reader about First Century AD Rome and Greece is simply terrific. For example, here is a rarely presented account of tourism in the classic age as well as much intriguing information about the Olympic Games, albeit in the Roman period. The author, Lindsey Davis, is well acquainted with the subject of early travel, having sent Falco on the road many times before, but this book's setting in Greece is quite enjoyable on its own. Also always enjoyable is the interplay between the members of Falco's family. What's not to like?
See Delphi and Die.......2006-11-28
This book came highly recommended and we were a little disappointed. It was an interesting concept.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Delphi book.......2007-02-26
This is an excellent Delphi learning & reference manual. I am finding it to be a great asset to my programming books.
Very good for reference - light on some details.......2006-12-20
Mr. Cantu has taken on an immense task condensing most of what you need to know about Delphi into a single volume. While he did a tremendous job of giving you a foundation of most aspects of Delphi, inevitably there are some areas in which you are left wanting.
I purchased this book for use at work, and for the most part - even if I have not found the exact answers to my questions - I have been able to determine the right "questions to ask" when it comes to formulating my Google queries to track down the answer I need. When it comes to Database Programming, I didn't find everything I needed in regards to ADO and had to get another book "Delphi Developers Guide to Programming with ADO" in order to make up for the sadly - very short section that Mr. Cantu devoted to the topic in this book.
Overall - this is an excellent companion for anyone who develops in Delphi. I must however offer one caveat - you will not find all of your answers here without the aid of Delphi developer websites, forums, Google, and other third party resources. I recommend this as a purchase if you understand that it is just a good reference. If you have a specialized need - I suggest trying to find your answers via the Delphi section on About.com or via DelphiBasics (download version).
Great.......2006-05-19
yesterday I received the book by international shipping. As I have read the first 14 pages I am really satisfied with the cost that I pay. Thanks to God (to create such a man), thanks to marco and thanks to amazon of course.
Good guide..........2005-07-22
In order to understand some issues related with delphi 7, the book is very helpful. But is not a step by step book. In that case I advice to look for something more especific.
This book is reality very good, an excellent work of the writer, you should buy it as a bible.
Great book, a little exhausting........2005-07-20
This book is more of the reference type, not one you should try reading page by page as a tutorial. If that is what you are looking for, I recommend any beginner to check out 'Delphi in a Nutshell' , by O'reilly. Mastering Delphi 7 seemed to perfectly explain the IDE(Integrated Devlopment Enviornment), but over a course of about 800 pages. I dont think that the Delphi programming language was discussed enough in this book, it was more like a in depth way of explaining every feature of Delphi 7, the program.

Customer Reviews:
If you are a Delphi programmer wanting to learn .NET, this is the book.......2006-07-17
As someone who used to use Delphi almost all the time, I hate to admit that in order to stay employable today, I'm having to know and use .NET. If you find yourself in the same situation, and you want a fast-track to .NET 2.0, then this book is at the top of the list.
It's the single most used book in my collection today when it comes to .NET.
At first, I read it cover to cover. It's not hard reading like some books can be, and it made sense to me since I know Delphi.
But with Jon's writing style, it's organized in a way that I reach for it when I need a quick reference as well.
It comes with special tidbits about the inner workings of the CLR, which I always find fascinating.
I keep it at the front of my bookshelf. I've had other programmers that C++ guys come by and ask to use it. So you don't need to know Delphi to make good use of it. Borland C++ Builder users will find it an easy read as well since Builder is built on Delphi.
Five thumbs up for this one. Well done Jon!

More Than Just Delphi.......2006-07-12
This is a fantastic book for newcomers to Delphi, but with a shortcoming for some potential readers:
1. Kerman teaches not only Object Pascal/Delphi in a clear, concise progression, but also the basics in efficient design while solving real world implementation problems.
2. Object Oriented Programming is integrated by the very nature of using Delphi objects, and later in the book, Kerman introduces additional Object Oriented Programming (OOP) fundamentals.
3. Unlike nearly every other Delphi text I've read aimed at Delphi newcomers, this book ensures the reader learns, understands, and integrates efficient problem solving along the way.
4. Finally, Kerman includes excellent exercises and quizzes to verify and challenge your learning in each chapter.
5. My only negative critique (and the reason I only give the book four stars) is that the book does not include solutions to the end-of-chapter exercises and quizzes. (The solutions are located online for instructors only, which makes it difficult if you are teaching yourself). You also will not have access to the book's errata unless you complete online student registration with Addison/Wesley/Pearson Tech/(etc.). The reason this book is so expensive is because it's been adopted as a teaching text, and all textbooks are expensive because they can be. Sad but true.
Having said that, I do not believe you'll find a better introduction to Delphi/Object Pascal anywhere.
Excellent book.......2003-10-15
Very well laid out and explained. The high price is probably because delphi 5 is included.
Would recommend to everyone.
East US.......2003-05-22
I agree with the previous reviewers. The book is helpful with developing a basic understanding of Delphi, but it is overpriced compared to other Delphi books on the market.
Great Book.......2002-02-09
This book [was expensive to me] because it is a textbook, and as we all know, there's no getting around the price of a textbook. I'm not currently attending class, but purchased this book anyway. I found it extremely well laid out, very descriptive, and informative. I went from knowing very little about Delphi, to knowing quite a bit. This book has all the little bits of information the less formal books leave out. A great book! If I had one complaint, it was of the lack of attention to some of the higher programming skills, chapters like DDE were very short indeed, but gave you enough to know what they did. This is a beginners book, make no mistake. If you're just learning Delphi, it's great. I believe this was made with Delphi 5, but there are so few differences, you'll never notice.
Very Good for the novice, but [pricey].......2001-09-14
Programming and Problem Solving with Delphi is clearly laid out and provides good information for people new to Delphi. As a self-trained programmer migrating from Visual Basic to Delphi I found it quite useful, but I question its value to experienced Delphi campaigners. I also cannot work out why it's so [pricey].

Great place to start.......1997-06-24
This book is an excellent place to start creating Delphi components. If you are new to component creation (like I was) and need an intelligent place to start, this is the book that will best serve your needs. Some of the material is a bit difficult to understand (due to lack of depth), but careful study of the techniques will prove useful. I would recommend this book to anyone new or slightly seasoned to component creation, but I must admit that I outgrew it in about 4-5 months. Some of the "meatier" details are not there for advanced component building. For example, I had a difficult time figuring out how to surface the properties of "sub-components." The book makes only a slight reference to the subject and is not very clear about what is happening. As it happens, it is a very simple task, but I wish the book had helped me to better understand it. Overall I liked this book. It moved me from being dependent on other programmers' custom components and allowed me to start making Delphi work according to my specific needs
Nice level of detail!.......1997-04-11
Konopka has done a good job of getting into the finer aspects of component development, and provides some useful additions to your VCL component library
Good coverage of component creation in general.......1997-01-10
Good coverage of most beginning to advanced component creation topics.
Falls short in discussing advanced data-aware component creation (grids, treeviews, etc.).
Does not discuss in depth design time interfaces.
Overall, a good reference for component creation.

Customer Reviews:
Good reference.......2006-02-14
If you're into, or getting into, .NET programming with Delphi, this is a good reference. I am a professional programmer, and Delphi is one of 4 languages I use on a regular basis. I bought this book, and Cantu's book, about two months ago to ease into ASP.NET from 12 years of VCL programming. Both books are very helpful, but my Pacheco book is way more dog-eared than the Cantu book, so that says something right there.
Beautiful!.......2005-12-30
Beautiful introduction to .NET and Delphi language / environment. Especially enjoyed the
sections on GDI programming, assemblies, and cross platform demos. Great job.
Excellent, lots of advanced topics.......2004-12-06
Though this book aimed primarilly at .NET rather than Delphi it self, but I think its approach is correct, for the readers that already familiar Delphi 5/6/7. I would call this book '.NET for Delphi programmers'.
This book contains advanced topics I didn't feel useful first time. But lately I migrate some old Delphi 5 compoment packages
to VCL.NET, I found there're many useful topics in this book.
In a word, I like this book and it worth the money.
Good .NET instruction, but not very Delphi-centric.......2004-08-08
I was initially disappointed by this book, though now I am only slightly negative. In the book, the author provides a good overview of how you can use Delphi for .NET and ASP.NET. I did learn a lot about .NET and am better prepared for the migration.
However, this looks and reads like an editted C# book. Except for a few pages (literally one chapter), there is very little about Delphi. The examples are in Delphi, which helps with the understanding, but the author uses the Microsoft .NET libraries and DOES NOT USE EVEN ONE of the Borland specific libraries like VCL.NET, etc. in his examples.
Overall, an educational book, but not what I was looking for.
Essential for Delphi .Net developer.......2004-07-21
The book covers an excellent range of topics. As both Delphi and .Net are large subjects I think Xavier has managed the content very well.
The book is easy to read and the examples are very easy to follow.
The Delphi 6 Developers Guide on CD is also a nice bonus if you are still developing for Win32 in Delphi 6/7.
What I expect out of this type of book is to reduce my learning curve and allow me to start writing programs, Delphi for .NET Developer's Guide has certainly done that for me.
If you are going to write .NET programs in Delphi than you want this book on your shelf.

Customer Reviews:
A great project that wasn't finished.......2002-03-23
I have spent a lot of time studying this book. The early chapters are the best. The book needs work. It has a lot of valuable information, especially for a programming student who does not have much database experience. Unfortunately, it has a few glaring errors and omissions. The book has graphics that are labeled wrong. It refers to files on the accompanying CD that do not exist. I couldn't find an errata page on the Internet for the book. If the book were taken through a very serious editing process and re-published as a second edition, I might buy the new version.
However, the quality of the writing, the overall poor quality of the binding, and the annoyances of being mis-directed make this book a poor comparison to "Delphi 4 Unleashed" and the Tomes of Delphi "Algorithms and Data Structures." Buy this book, only if you gave up trying to read database chapters in the Delphi 4 Unleashed. Also, be prepared to make a few mental jumps when you try to follow the projects.
Text Is Slow, Sparse, Introductory; Save Your Money.......2000-12-25
If you do not know database, or you need a very slow introduction to both databases and how to use them in Delphi, this may be the book for you. The book touts itself as Advanced on its back cover level rating. I don't know what marketing manager came up with Advanced, but this book is not even Intermediate -- it is Introductory. Do you know relational databse design? Well, the table of contents divides this book into three parts, and Part One is relational database design. If you already know the basics, this is just a rehash of everything you already know. None of the examples in parts two and three could be called Advanced -- they are Introductory. This is a book for beginners. The only thing that might be a redeeming quality of this book is that the Appendix has an exhaustive list of BDE API calls, but if you don't need this text (sans examples, etc.), this book won't do you any good. I was very disappointed. CONCLUSION: LOOK ELSEWHERE.
I found it useful.......2000-05-26
This book is probably not for the advanced Delphi programmer as it states, but I found it useful.
I come from an engineering background. Most of my prior programs are number crunching Fortran programs. I've switched to Delphi to do Windows programming. I had no database background.
This book got me started with database theory, and database practice with Delphi. I must admit if I was a Delphi database expert and bought this book I would probably be dissapointed. But it fit my needs with good discussion and examples for my level of database experience.
This book is great.......2000-04-01
Contrary to the opinions of most of the other people who have written reviews on this book, I thought it was great. I have been developing applications in C++Builder for about a year or so (and in Delphi for a few years before that), but never had to do anything too complicated with databases. I especially found Part II of the book extremely valueable and easy to understand.
Even though this is a Delphi book it was invaluable to me in completing a C++Builder database application that I was required to write.
In my opinion, if you aren't advanced enough to know how to do database programming in Delphi (or C++Builder), but would like to be, this book is for you. If you are already an accomplished database programmer, then you probably wouldn't look for a book like this in the first place.
Beginners Only.......1999-10-26
I got this because it was listed as for Advanced programmers. But it does little more the walk through some very simple examples of the basic database issues of Delphi. If you are a beginner and need some hand holding to get you started on topics you already have a detailed explanation on. Then this book might help. But don't expect to learn much from it by itself. I would get a copy cheap from someone experienced that got suckered in to buying it.
